Melkbosstrand resident Lee-ann de Vries said theincreasefeels like apunishment for people who depend on public transport every day.
“A R500 increasemight not seem like much to decision-makers, but for an ordinary working family it is enormous. We already budget every cent for groceries, school fees, electricityand fuel.Now we are expected to simply find another R500 every month just to get to work. MyCiTi hasalways been promoted as an affordable, reliable service, but this increasecompletely changesthat. It feels unfairthatresidents who have supported theservicefor years are now expected to carry suchaheavyfinancial burden.”
Table View resident AnoHendricks said commutersare being forced to pay more withoutreceiving any additional benefits.
“What frustratesmethe most is that nothing aboutthe serviceisimproving, yet thepricehas goneupdramatically overnight. Most of us use MyCiTibecause we don't have another affordable option. We leave home before sunrise, spend longhours travelling andwork hard just to makeends meet. A50% increase is simply unrealistic. It sends themessage that ordinary commuters must continue absorbingrisingcosts while our salaries remain thesame.”
Milnertonresident Lauren Andrews said many households have reached breaking pointfinancially.
“Everythingisbecomingmore expensive at thesame time. Rent hasincreased, food pricesare climbing, electricity is more expensive and nowtransport too. Families cannot continue stretching already tight budgets. For many of us, MyCiTi isn't a convenience —it'show we get to work, take our childrentoschooland attend medical appointments. This increase makes everyday life even harder and risks pushingpeople into financial distress.”
Melkbosstrand resident David Willemse said theCity should have consulted residents before implementing such a significantincrease.
“If the City is facing higher operating costs, commuters understand that costs sometimes need to change. What people are asking foristransparency and proper consultation. Adecisionthat affects thousands of workingpeople shouldn't happenwithoutmeaningful engagement.
Residents deserve to understand exactly whysuchalarge increase is necessary and whetherevery alternative was
considered before placing the burden on commuters.”
PUBLICPARTICIPATION
Those behind the campaign are calling on the City of Cape Town to suspend the R500 monthly pass increase and to review the fare structure through meaningful public participation.
They are further demanding the introduction of commuter relief for workers, learners, and low-income passengers, the publication of aclear breakdown of cost calculations, subsidies, and diesel-related increases, as well as urgent public engagement sessions in affected communities.
Thepetition is directed at Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, Mayco member for urban mobility Rob Quintas, and the City of Cape Town Council.
In reply to amedia enquiry, the City of Cape Towndefended its decision to increase public transport fares by 50%, saying the hike is necessary to keep the service financially sustainable.
When asked why the increase is so steep, Quintas said the City had been absorbing rising fuel costs for months.
“The City has absorbed the rising costs of fuel for many months at an additional cost of R9,1 million per month. We have to keep the service sustainable in order to avoid cutting routes or narrowing down the service,”hesaid.
Asked how the City arrived at the 50% figure, Quintas did not provide adetailed breakdown of the cost calculations but pointed to diesel price increases as akey driver.
On thequestion of how low-income residentsare expected to afford the increase, and what the City's message is to poor commuters who can no longer afford to travel to work, Quintas acknowledged the burden on vulnerable households.
“We have lowered tariffs in the past when therehave been consecutive months of fuel cost reductions, and should the diesel price continue to decrease we will definitely revisit the fares, as we are well aware of the impact that transport costs have on low-income households in particular,” he said.
TheCitydid not directly respond to calls for apublished breakdown of cost calculations, subsidies, and diesel-related increases, or for urgent public engagement sessions in affected communities, both of which form part of the community petition submitted to the City.

The Western Cape EducationDepartment has expanded its holiday security supportfrom 424 schools lastwinter to 453 high-risk schools ahead of the 2026 June-July holidays, allocating R11,99 million for holiday securityinthe 2026/27 financialyear.

CALLFORSTRONGERPOLICING
While communities have an important role to play in protecting schools during theJune holidays, theDAhas called on thepolice to intensify visible policing around educational facilities and to strengthenefforts to combat criminal elementstargeting places of learning.
“Every school that is vandalised represents adirect attack on achild’s
future. We urge communities to remain vigilant and immediately report suspicious activity to the police or the Safe Schools Hotline on 0800 45 46 47. A watchful community can defeat even the most determined criminals,” saidPeter Johnson, DA provincial spokesperson on education.
Johnson added that he would be writing to the office of the provincial commissioner to obtain aclear understanding of what plans the police has in place to protect schools during the June holidays.
“As places of learning increasingly become targets for vandalism and theft, visible policing and proactive interventions are essential. Communities and schools cannot fight thisbattle alone, and the police must play itsfull role in safeguarding our children’s futures. Criminals and vandals must be caught and successfully prosecuted to ensure the safetyofour schools,”hesaid.

The National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) Station 18 in Melkbosstrand hasexpressed heartfelt thanks to everyone who took partinits recent Solstice Swim, describing the eventas a vibrant celebration of community spirit and support for lifesaving work along the coast.
Organisers said the morning wasfilled withenergy, laughter and determination as braveswimmerstook to the cold winter water while supporters cheered from the shoreline, creating what they describedas atruly memorable community gathering.
“There were chilly toes, big smiles, and plenty of laughs —exactly whata winter swimshould be,” the NSRI Station 18 team said. “Thank you for supporting NSRI Station 18 and for showing once againhow specialour communityis. See you at the next one.”

The 2026 Winter Solstice Swimis scheduled for Sunday 21 June, marking the longest night of the year. Participants across South Africa are encouraged to organise their own plunge events in

NSRIspokesperson Craig Lambinon said previously theinitiative highlightsboth thecommitment of volunteers andthe importance of public support.

Organisers sayevery contribution helps ensurethatNSRI rescue crews remain trained, equipped andready to respond to emergenciesatsea andalong the coastline. Participants are encouraged to set up fundraisingcampaigns and involve friends, family andcolleagues to expand

Protests reflect deeper communityfrustration
Therecentwaveofprotests acrossparts of Cape Town highlights growingfrustration amongresidents overissuessuch as servicedelivery, risinglivingcosts, transport fares, andbroader concernsaroundsafety and governance. Whilethe righttoprotest is afundamental part of ademocratic society, it is important that these demonstrationsremain peaceful,lawful, and constructive.
In recent weeks, severalprotests have drawnpublic attention, particularlyinareas such as Parklands, Claremont, and SeaPoint. Thesegatheringshave sparkedstrong debatewithin communities, with some residents expressing concern about the messagingbehind certainmovements, while others feel that protest action is the onlyway to have their voices heard.
What is becoming increasingly clearisthatmanyof thesedemonstrations arerooted in deeper socio-economic frustrations. Rising electricitytariffs, transport costs, housing shortages, andunemployment continue to placepressure on households already struggling to makeends meet
However, while the concernsmay be legitimate, the manner in which theyare expressed matters Thereisa risk that heightenedtensions andmisinformation can lead to fear,division,and even confrontation within communities. This is whyresponsibleleadership,clear communication from authorities, andcalmengagement with residents areessential during such times. It is also importantthat political andcommunity leaders avoid inflaming situations forpersonalor
political gain. Instead, efforts shouldbefocused on creating platforms formeaningful dialogue between residents anddecision-makers. At the same time,law enforcement agencies have adifficultbut necessaryroletoplayinensuring that public order is maintained whileprotecting the constitutionalright to peaceful assembly. Abalanced approach is needed, onethatneither suppresses legitimateexpression norallowsdisorder to develop. Ultimately, protests areasymptom of broader challenges that requirelong-term solutions rather than short-termresponses. Unless the underlying issues are addressed, communities willcontinue to express their frustrationsinpublic spaces.
