Asgeopolitical tensions in the Middle East drive up fuel costs, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) warns thatwhile emergency rescueswill always continue, the systems that support those missions are coming under increasing pressure.

Fuel is at the heart of every NSRI operation —from rescue vessels andresponse vehicles to training exercises and community outreach Annualboat runningcosts already exceed R5.5million,and further increases areexpected to stretchbudgets even tighter.

Despite these challenges, the NSRI has made it clear:

emergency response will never be compromised. CEO Mike Vonk said lifesavingmissionsremain theorganisation’s top priority.

“We will never stopresponding to emergencies. But if fuel costs rise this sharply, thepressure moves into thesystems that keep our crewsready andour prevention work active.”

The Mother Cityhas claimed sixth place in Time Out’s 2026 rankings, keeping it firmly among the world’s elite destinations.

In termsofthisyear's rankings it no longerholds thetop spotitclaimed the previousyear; itscontinued presence in thetop 10 reinforces its status as one of themostdesirable cities on the planet.

Cape Town finds itself in strong company this year, with Melbourne taking thenumber oneposition, followed by Shanghai, Edinburgh, London and New York.

Despite droppingafew places Cape Town still ranks aheadofmajor global destinations suchasMexico City, Bangkok, Seouland Tokyo.

Notably, it remains the only African city to feature in the top10.

Anew partnership betweenthe National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and Scouts South Africa’s Western Cape Region is giving young people a chance to turn training into real-life lifesaving skills —while opening doors to meaningful community serviceand future careers.

Since February, the programme has introduced 335volunteer Scout Leaders to water safety, survival swimming, and lifesaving skillsduring the Western Cape’s Scouting-in-Schools leadership training at the Hawequas ScoutAdventure Centre. From thisgroup, 192 participants committed to further NSRI training —a step that transforms exposure into action. Keith Burchell,NSRI Honorary Life Governor, reflects on the programme’s

TheCity in partnership with Province has launched anew ExpandedPublic WorksProgramme (EPWP) and communitydevelopmentworker (CDW) hub in Mamre. Located at thecorner of Adam and Liedeman streets, the hub makes government services moreaccessible to residents of thearea,eliminatingthe needto travel toAtlantis.

All under one roof

Residents can visit the Mamrehub on weekdays from 08:00 to 16:00 (except publicholidays). Here, theywill be able to registeron the jobseekers (EPWP) database and obtain assistance from CDWs, including guidance on social welfare and familysupport services,referrals to relevant departments, andthe reporting of service issues. Faced with below-average rainfall and increased water demand during summer, the Cityhas been doingall it can to reduce waterlossesfromburstpipes andleaks.

Yetpipebursts and water leaksdonot always stick to the City’sschedule. In the second half of 2025, the City respondedto an averageof346 pipe bursts permonth. Althoughthe targeted repair time is two businessdays, teams immediately isolate the watersupply once aburstisreported, to minimise losses.Mostbursts during this periodwereresolvedinlessthan half the expectedturnaround time.

In certain instances, repairsdotake longer. This can occur when burstshappen in high-riskareas, wherework depends on the availability of Law Enforcement, or whencomplextechnicalrepairs arerequired.

What’s worse –leakorburst? Pipe bursts and waterleaks differin impact. Bursts causea suddenand uncontrolled lossofwater,often resulting in flooding and pressure drops that requireimmediate intervention. LKavanagh claims first Spar Grand Prix win

Tayla Kavanagh delivered astunning performance on Sunday 29 March, earning her first victoryina Spar GrandPrix race at theopening leg of this year's 10km women's road running series in the MotherCity.

Kavanagh, representing Hollywood Athletics Club, held on to the back of defending series champion Glenrose Xaba (Boxer AthleticsClub) for mostofthe race before launchingafurious kicktosnatch the win.

The 24-year-old athlete completed the contestin31:33, chopping eight secondsoff her personal best (31:41) set in Cape Town in October last year.

She wasjust21seconds outside the national10kmrecord(31:12)held by Xaba.

Xabawas five seconds off the pace, crossing the finish line in 31:38, while her Boxer teammateKyla Jacobs took a

big stepforward in her comeback to elite competition by taking third place in a careerbest 32:16.

Kavanagh was all smiles after handing Xaba arare defeat andtaking the early lead in the Spar series.

"We had agood battle out there. The race went well and I'm happy to walk away with apersonalbest today," Kavanagh said afterwards.

"I've putina lot of work in training, so I'mreally proud of myself and the team, and I'm very blessed andgrateful to walk away with thewin."

Xaba admitted she hadhoped Kavanagh would help push the pace.

"I thought Tayla would come on board and we couldhelp each other, but she didn't take the lead, so Itried my best to push the pace," Xaba said.

"If shepushedthe pace withme, Ithink

we were going to run even better times, but I'm very happy with the result and it shows the standard in SouthAfrica is improving."

Caster Semenya also competed in Sunday's 10km race finishing acredible 12th place in 35:44.

"I came to Cape Towntogive my team support and decided to race as well. Iam abig fan of the Spar Grand Prix series. Firstly, it's awomen's only series which us women love and secondly the series has contributed so much to the promotion and development of women's road running in all age groups.
