Anew high school in Kuils River has opened its doors for Phase 1operations, accommodating around 240 learners across Grades8 and 9. In mere months, residents of Brantwood witnessed aschool arise on aonce-vacant plot between Valotta and Clivia avenues. When TygerBurger first reported on the new school in October last year (“Nuwe skool in aanbou”, 22/10/2025)—soon after construction commenced—ward councillor Wouter de Vos noted that the erfhad been earmarkedfor educationalpurposes for many years already

At the time the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) said thedateof opening was still under discussion.

Construction was projected to be completed by April2026 with an estimated budget of R70 million.

Education department spokesperson

Bronagh Hammond then saidthe development plan includes 15 classrooms, making provisionfor approximately 550 learners.

The Language of Learning andTeaching (LoLT) is English andAfrikaans,” said Hammond.

Peter Goeiman hasbeen appointed as Brantwood High's curator principal. The restofthe current staff complement consists of onedepartmental head, five post-Level 1teachers, an administrative clerk, ageneral foreman and ageneral assistant.

Hammondconfirmedthatconstruction teams worked throughout the school holidays to ensure Brantwood High was ready toaccept its first learners at the startofthe 2026 school year.

PLACEMENTPRESSURE

According to WCED there are around 1.2 millionlearners in the province's schools thisyear.

Around 73 000 Grade Rs and102 000 Grade 1sstarted “big school” on Wednesday14January. Another 97 000 Grade 8learners entered highschool

While construction is still ongoing on site the WCED recently announced that Brantwood High School is one of two schools that opened in aphased approach for the 2026 school year. Hammond explained that Phase 1consists ofsix classrooms to accommodate Grade 8 and 9learners only. “The schoolwill be expandedinthe second phase to accommodate the learners asthey progress through the system,” she said. “We expect enrolment to reach 120 in Grade 8, and 120 learnersinGrade 9

The province continues to face increasing demandfor places in schools, but the WCED said the Rapid School Build programme continues to expand access to educationinthe province “at an incredible rate” to meet this demand.

Ninenew schools that were opened in aphased approach have been fully completed for the2026 school year. These schools areinLwandle, Wallacedene, Blue Downs, Philippi, Tafelsig, Darling, Fisherhaven, and Plettenberg Bay. Cape’s water supply stable fornow Citysays

DESIRÉERORKE

DESIREE.RORKE@TYGERBURGER.CO.ZA

Cape Town residents can breathe easy this summer as there will be no water restrictions during the coming months

The announcement comes after many people questioned why the city didn't put water limits in place before the busy December holidays whilst there was severe pressure on water supply.

Maycomember forwater and sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, this weekina statement to TygerBurger said the decision isn'tactually made by Cape Town's city council. Instead, the NationalDepartment of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has the power to decidewhen waterrestrictions are needed.

Last November, government experts took aclose look at the city's water situation andconcluded that Cape Town has enough water to get through the 2025/2026 hydrologicalyear without anyrestrictions, says Badroodien.

This decision was based on adetailed analysis that weighed several important factors.

Officials examined how full the dams are right now compared to the same timelast year, lookedatcurrent rainfall patterns, andcalculated how much waterpeople typically use during the hotsummer months when demand peaks.

After crunching all the numbers, DWS gave Cape Town the green light to continue without restrictions.

Looking ahead to the new year, no restrictions are planned for these months either.

STAYWATER-WISE

However, residents are reminded that permanent water by-law regulations do applyand are compulsory even when water restrictions have not been implemented.

"While there is no immediate reasonfor concernaround CapeTown's damlevels, everyone needs to please manage their water use over the coming months to ensure that we will not need to implement water restrictions in future. Water restrictions are the last optionand done to conserve water, but thelikelihoodof implementingthem canbe prevented if we alluse water wisely," says Badroodien.

"The City is monitoring the water useand dam levels very closely, and decisions will depend on this coming winter's rainfall. Restrictions will only be considered if thereisahighlikelihood that thedam levels will fall below80% on 1November 2026. We need to reiterate that early proactive measures are far more effective than emergency restrictions.

He concludes by saying thecity'sdaily usage target of less than 975millionlitres per daywas determined to mitigate the riskassociated with below-average or unpredictable rainfall during 2026, whilst also maintaining areliable water supply.”

—BRENDEN RUITER

The achievement follows an outstanding first-place finish in 2024 and further cementsthe club's reputationas oneofthe region's leading athletics clubs since its founding in 2016.

Club chair Megan Classen said the 2025 WPA Coca-Cola League proved highly competitive, with 108 road running clubs participating across 12 race fixtures between January and December. "Clubs had to field as many athletes aspossible at each predeterminedrace," Classen explained. "Every permanently licensed athlete who finished within the stipulated cut-off time earned one point for their club, making depth, commitment and participationkey to success."

ARD Running Club toppedthe final standings with 1096 points, earning R20 000,while Kuils River Runners Club finished with 1040 points.Pinelands Running Club secured third place andR10 000

The club prides itself on being more than justarunning club, providing a supportive environment for runners, walkers and junior athletes. From seasoned competitors to beginnersand young aspiringrunners, everyonehas aplace to grow, stay active andfeel encouraged.
