Die polisie ondersoek vier moorde en een poging tot moordná'n skietery in Wesbank Saterdagaand (16Mei).

André Traut,'nprovinsiale polisiewoordvoerder, het gesê die polisie is omstreeks 20:00 na Strandveldstraat ontbied, waar die beamptes op drie vroue en een man met skietwondeafgekom het. Dieslagoffers was tussen 32 en 39 jaar oud.

Paramedici het die slagoffers op die toneel dood verklaar.

Volgens die polisie is 'n sewejarige kind, wat in die voorval gewond is, is na 'n nabygeleë mediese fasiliteitgeneem.

Traut hetgesêdie voorlopige ondersoek dui daarop dat die voorval moontlik bendeverwantis. Dieomstandighede rakende die skietery word deur die polisie se eenheidvir ernstigeengeweldsmisdaad ondersoek.

INWONERSSOEKANTWOORDE

Ebrahim Sawant, wyksraadslid, het Maandag gesê hy is, net soos die gemeenskap, deur die veelvuldige moorde geskok.Sawanthet dit as 'n "sinnelose slagting" beskryf.

"Dit is amper drie maande sedert die weermag ontplooi is en ons het hulle nog nie hier gesien nie."

VERGADERING

Sawant het gesê 'n gemeenskapsvergadering word vir Donderdag 16:00 by dieveeldoeligesentrum in Wesbank beplan.

"Eenvan die grootste vrae wat die inwoners het,isoor hoekom die weermag nog nie in Wesbank ontplooi is nie. Die mense in Wesbank voel vergete," het hy gesê. "Die inwoners wil hê dat die weermag sou gou as moontlik hier ontplooi moet word."

Die inwoners eis verantwoordbaarheid van die regstelsel en wil weet hoekom vermeende bendelede borgtog kryen dikwels kort nadat hulle vasgetrek is, weer vrygelaat word.

Sawant hoop om verskeie rolspelersby die vergadering te kry. "Onswil hê die polisie, aanklaers, regeringsamptenare en selfs die Menseregtekommissie moet aan die gemeenskap verantwoording kom gee." Heavyrain tops up dam levels

Cape Town’s recent heavy rainfall has broughtwelcome relief to the city’s watersupply, with dam levels increasing significantly overthe last two weeks.

According to theCity of Cape Town, dam levels climbedby12.4% by Tuesday 12 May, reaching61.2% following persistent rainfall between Sunday 10 May and Monday 11 May. Officialssay levels are expected to continue rising over the coming days as runoff water flows into catchmentareas andstorage dams

Despite theimprovement, residentsare beingurged not to become complacent and to continue usingwater sparingly.

The City said waterconservation remains critical as dam water needs to last until thesame timenext year.

Maycomember for water and sanitation, ZahidBadroodien, said while the rainfall hasbroughtmuch-needed relief, Cape Town cannot rely entirely on unpredictable winter weather patterns.

“While rainfall is vital, it also has to rain

in the right place, in our dam catchments for dam levels to increase,”hesaid. Alongside the rise in dam levels, the City also recorded adecrease in water consumption. Daily water usage dropped from 874 million litres per day last week to 831 million litres per day —29million litres below the city’swinter usage target of 860 million litres per day.

TheCitysaid thisreduction shows that residentsare responding positively to ongoing calls for responsible water use.

Officials stressed that Cape Townis not currently facing adrought and is not nearing a“Day Zero” scenario.

However, the City warned that water restrictions could still be considered later this year depending on future rainfall patterns, dam levels and consumption trends.

Inwoners, personeel en 'n paar familielede het saam met tannie Marie Bester haar 100steverjaarsdag kom vier. Tannie Marie woon reeds sedert 1998 daar en oor die laaste 28 jaarhet syaste ware die "Eden" in Eden Park help sit. Al het die wêreld sedert haar grootwordjare in diePaarl drasties verander, het haar liefde virtuinmaak konstant gebly.

Tot onlangs het tannie Marie nog in'n huisie by die oord gewoon. Nadatsy 'n paar keer geval het, moes sy twee maande gelede na die versorgingseenheid skuif.

In haar verwelkoming het Attie Loots, wat die viering help reël het, gesê tannie Marie was die eersteinwoner in die oord se siersteenhuisies. "Sy het ingespringen tuingemaak, soos sy maar altyd gemaak het.Haar tuin bestaan steeds. As jy haar gesien het, dan het sy 'n gieter, 'n graaf of vurk in die hand gehad."

Haar man,Jacobus (Kosie) Bester het op die spoorweggewerk. Hy is Worcester toe verplaas,waar hulle sowat 10 jaar lank gewoon het.

Metsydood "so30jaar gelede" het sy Kaap toegekom, waar sy by 'n familielid gewoon hetvoordat sy in Oktober1998 by EdenPark ingetrek het. "Sy het ook 'n seun gehad, André, maar hy is op 15 oorlede. Hy het 'n hartkwaal gehad." Viljoen het ook vertel tannie Marie hetkankergehadtoe sy in "haar twintigs" was. "Sy is daardeur en tot vandag, op 100, kankervry."

Maureen Flint (broerskind) van Brackenfell, wat hul familiegeskiedenis in 'n boek saamgestel het, het gesê tannie Marie (gebore Byleveld) is een van ses

TygerBurger kon net so kortliks met tannieMarie gesels. Sy het bevestigdat sy nog tot "op laaste" tuingemaak het. "Ek kon met 'n graaf werk, grassny; daar was nie 'n ding wat ek nie (in die tuin) gedoen het nie."

Sy het vertel dat sy in standerd sewe uit die skool gehaal is omdat sy haar ma moes oppas. "Sywas 'n invalide; ek moes haar oppas. Ek het haar baie jareopgepas; eintlik my hele jong lewe."

Sy het geglo aan besig bly, maar met die ouderdom kom diekwale, het sy toegegee. "Ek het een nag geval daar in my huis en toe my hand seergemaak." Sy besef dat sy nou nie meer in die tuin kan werk nie en hulp benodig, maar "ekkan aangaan". Met die groetslag laat hoor sy: "Ek wil nog altyd werk," en voeg dan by dat haar verjaarsdagviering aangenaam was.

We could feel as Capetonians that there wasimmense stress on ourcity’s infrastructure.

“The sewer system was notsomuch an issue here, but if you go to poorer parts of the city where enormous numbers of people have moved over the years, you will see that our sewer system is absolutely creaking and it was even worse five years ago.

“All of our major sewer plants in the city were over capacity, and ourpipes were in poor form.Also the freshwater pipe system was under pressure, with lots of water bursts.Even though the City had been investing in infrastructure steadily over time, we have not been doing that at apace that kept up with thegrowthofour city,” he said.

“So while we could see it was not like what we were seeing in Johannesburg, Durban or Tshwane or elsewhere where thingswere actually startingtocollapse,I felt very strongly that unless we changed the direction, we were on adangerous path

Infrastructure has gone down, and the result is clear to see,” he said.

“We are currently replacing more than four times the total number of pipes of all theother seven major citiesinthe country combined —includingJohannesburg, Pretoria, Ekurhuleni, Durban, Port Elizabeth, East London and Bloemfontein.

“I would like to replacemuch more because our number of pipe bursts is not yet where we want it to be. It breaks my heartand frustrates me immensely when Ivisit poorer communities in CapeTown andIstill see people living with daily sewer overflows, because thepipes were builtfor 10 000people and now thereare 50 000 people living in that area. “Westarted implementing the N2 Cape Flats MyCiTi expansion, whichisa very large publictransport investment.When it is finished sometime in the middle of next yearwe’ll see 300 buses runningall daylongalong that corridor —all the waydownthroughPhilippi, Gugulethu, Hanover Park, Mitchells Plainand ending in Khayelitsha. It will makea major difference to commuter transport,” he said.

MASSIVESEMIGRATION

“What hashappened as Cape Town has continued to succeed andasothercities have continued to deteriorate, is we have hadmassive semigration. If you thought semigration was strong before covid, we have data that shows 100000 families not people, but families —have moved from GautengtoCape Town in the last four years —mostly to Somerset West, Durbanville,the Atlantic Seaboard and Table View.

“We know why they are coming; they also want tolive in acity that works, that offers agood future for their children. Construction of themulti-million-rand GrandWestMall can nowbegin, following therecent formal transfer of land to anew joint venture between Flanagan &Gerard and GrandWest, the property group announcedearlier this month.

Karen Theunissen, bedieningsbestuurder, sê die aand was ’n groot sukses met ongeveer 200 gastewat bymekaar gekom het om saam te kuier en die projekteondersteun.

DieWinterhoop-projekfokus vanjaar op die ondersteuning van weerlose kinders in Rietbron, 'n behoeftigegemeenskapindie Oos-Kaap, sowelasleerders van die Alta du Toitskool.

reeds vroegaand 'n hoogtepunt en het vir ’n besonderse atmosfeer gesorg.

"Verskeie bekende sakeondernemings van in en om Kuilsrivier was verteenwoordig en het hul ondersteuning gewys. Suidkerk, Zifumane en Alta du Toitskool wil elkeen bedank wat die aand bygewoon en ondersteun het,"sêTheunissen."

Die gemeente se Rietbronuitreik sal eers aan die einde van September plaasvind.

Cape Town’sfour seasons in 48 hours

There is something almost theatricalabout the weather in Cape Town. It doesn’t simply change —itperforms, complete with dramatic lighting, sound effects, and just enough chaos to make everyone briefly question their life choices.

For 48 hours, the city is pushed through an entire weathersystem with verylittle warning.

Gale-force winds arrive first, pushing rain sideways across roads and turning visibility intoagrey blur.Then come the floods, the icy bite in the air, andthe constant roar of wind that makes even solid buildings feel slightly less confident than usual. And then there are the trees. Not just swaying —but uprooted. Entire trees are tornout by their roots, collapsing across roads and open spaces like nature briefly losing an argument with gravity People don’t talk about “badweather”so much as they talkabout getting through it —waiting for the next gust, the next downpour, the next reminder that the storm is still very much in charge. Then, just as suddenly as it arrived,it stops performing.

The wind drops itsintensity. The rain slows. Apatch of blue appears in the sky like someone testing the lighting system And then, almost without ceremony,the storm is gone. And this is where things get truly CapeTown. Because Cape Town has avery specific post-storm personality: complete denial.

Within hours, the same city thatwas dealingwith uprooted trees,flooded roads andflying debris begins behaving as if nothing remotely dramaticjust happened

As if the previous 48 hours were just a slightly intense dream everyone agreed not to talk about. It is almostimpressive The storm doesn’t fade away —itgets socially ignored. One moment residents are navigating blocked roads and dodging fallen branches. The next, they are discussing weekend plans infull sunlight, with the confidenceofpeople who did not just survive what can only be describedas nature’s aggressive reminder. Lion's Head suddenly becomes apopular suggestion again, as if it wasn’tjust partially hidden behind horizontal rain a day earlier.The coastline follows the same pattern. Beaches refill quickly, even if the sand is still damp and the oceanhasn’t fullyrecovered from itsown moodswing Jackets disappear. Sunglasses return. Iced drinks are ordered with surprising optimism.

Coffee shops reopen their outdoorseating like nothinghappened. Conversations shift from “Did you see that tree comedown”? to “Whatabeautiful day forawalk”. Andthat is the most Cape Town thing of all —not the storm itself, but the speed at which it is mentally deleted.

And yet, within aday or two, it is treated as adistant inconvenience —something that almost happened in another version of the city. Almost like it triedtodo serious damage… and the city politely decided not to remember it thatway

That is thestrange rhythmoflife in Cape Town:extreme weather followed immediately by extreme optimism No slow recovery. No lingering drama. Just areboot. And by Wednesday morning, the same people who were dodging uprooted trees and sandbagging their driveways were posting sunrise selfies from Bloubergstrand beach, acting like the last 48 hours didn’t try to kill us —just briefly interruptedthe weather forecast.
