CTeconomyhits newheights

As the final quarter of 2025 begins, Cape Town is marking a high point in its economic trajectory, with record-breaking levels of investment and job creation reinforcing its position as one of South Africa’s most dynamic urban economies, according to James Vos, Mayco member for economic growth

Speaking to business leaders in the wake of Heritage Day celebrations, Vos said the City is not only honouring its rich cultural heritage, but also celebrating an economy that has proven resilient in the face of global and domestic headwinds

“Cape Town’s economy is withstanding shocks because it is built on collaboration, sound governance, and the determination of Capetonians,” Vos told an audience of business leaders “These achievements are proof that when local government and the private sector work together, we can create jobs, attract investment, and drive innovation ”

THOUSANDSOFJOBSCREATED

Between July 2024 and June 2025, the City’s high-growth sector programmes, run through Special Purpose Vehicles, facilitated R4,6 billion in investment, well above the R3,8 billion target

"Job creation also far exceeded expectations, with 10 214 new jobs against a target of 2 200 A further 2 674 people were trained, more than doubling the annual target," he said Vos noted that this represented a significant return on the City’s R51 million funding contribution for the financial year

Among the highlights were CapeBPO who created more than 9 185 new callcentre jobs and attracted R3,2 billion in investment

UVU Africa hosted 37 events reaching 5 500 people, trained township entrepreneurs, and co-launched the Biotech Growth Coalition, positioning Cape Town as a hub for health innovation

GreenCape facilitated R331,8 million in green investment, created 252 jobs,

Cape Town celebrates a record investment milestone

supported nearly 80 SMMEs, and spearheaded projects in e-waste and urban waste management

CUTTINGREDTAPE

“Alongside attracting investment, we are committed to cutting red tape so businesses can grow faster,” Vos said

Wesgro enabled 64 trade declarations and 1 639 jobs, while the Made in the Cape programme connected 245 exporters with 37 buyers across 16 countries

Vos also highlighted progress in making it easier to do business in Cape Town Through the City’s Ease of Doing Business initiative, turnaround times for water connections were reduced from 17 days to 11 days, while wayleave applications for infrastructure works now average just two to eight days

ENGAGINGDIRECTLYWITHBUSINESS Vos added that his hands-on approach was vital in ensuring the City’s strategies translated into real opportunities

“I especially value engaging directly with businesses, whether on their factory floors or in their boardrooms, to see firsthand the innovation and craftsmanship driving this city forward,” he said “This also ensures that we are reaching into more sectors, unlocking further opportunities, and growing more jobs for Capetonians ” Vos said the City was confident that Cape Town’s economy would continue to set the benchmark nationally

“By uniting local government and the private sector, we are setting the benchmark for building an economy that can withstand shocks and stresses, and more importantly, create prosperity that reaches every community ” R4.6BN

“Collaboration, innovation, and a passion for people lie at the heart of Cape Town’s economic story,” he said

In a very unfortunate turn of events, the Denny’s Fresh Mushrooms Cape Town facility near Fisantekraal will close its doors before the end of January next year after being in business for 40 years

The closure of the business, which was established in 1986, will affect 376 employees, of whom 70% is from Fisantekraal and Durbanville, says Natasha Evason, communications and investor relations manager on enquiry by TygerBurger

CHALLENGES

Libstar, of which Denny’s Fresh Mushrooms Cape Town is part of, announced the decision of the closure on 16 September at the announcement of its first-half year results

"The facility has unfortunately been operating at a sustained loss due to structural production challenges, including rising input costs, resource constraints and biosecurity pressures

"Wherever possible, Libstar is working to absorb staff into other business units and is engaging transparently with stakeholders to support employees and the surrounding farming community

Given the current labour consultations and processes underway, no further details can be shared at this stage," she says Charl de Villiers, chief executive officer of Libstar, says closing the facility has been an incredibly difficult, but necessary decision given the site’s ongoing losses and the structural pressures that have made its recovery unviable

"Our priority is to support our people through this transition, while ensuring continuity of mushroom supply for our customers," De Villiers says Their fresh mushroom facility

A local security company in Brackenfell, C-MAX Armed Security Services, last week issued a stark warning to the public following a surge in scam phone calls from fraudsters falsely claiming to represent the company in an attempt to obtain personal information such as banking details, safety and security details as well as addresses

Callers have been reported as acting aggressively and attempt

According to reports, individuals across the country, including in Cape Town, Pretoria, and surrounding suburbs have been targeted by callers using private or withheld numbers

"The scam, which has raised alarm bells due to its aggressive and persistent nature, is completely unaffiliated with the

To date, over 600 cameras have been installed across the region

“With the integration of AI, the cameras are now capable of distinguishing human movement, activating only when a person is detected and sending real-time footage directly to the control room,” explains owner of Buzybuy Dale Bredenkamp

Each camera captures human activity and transmits snapshots to the central hub, where neighbourhood watch members monitor activity around the clock

Suspicious incidents are flagged and reported to security stakeholders via dedicated Telegram groups

“Live monitoring plays a vital role in proactive crime prevention, and our goal is to foster strong cooperation between all parties involved in safeguarding these communities,” he said

Speaking to TygerBurger at the official opening, Cape Town Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, commended the initiative as a strong example of public-private collaboration

Celebrating90yearsofhope

St Joseph’s Intermediate Paediatric Care in Cape Town has just celebrated a remarkable milestone – 90 years of pioneering care for some of South Africa’s most medically fragile children.

Established in 1935 by five German Pallottine Missionary Sisters, St Joseph’s continues to offer a unique and irreplaceable service bridging the dangerous gap between hospital and home for children who are too ill to return home yet no longer need acute hospital care

The anniversary was marked last week with a Thanksgiving Mass in St Joseph’s chapel, attended by patients, families, staff, partners, donors, and the wider Catholic community

Bishop Sylvester David reminded guests that “the spirit of this facility rests not in its walls, but in the God who works through all who work here”

INSTITUTION’SROLE

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, who visited ahead of the celebration, praised the institution’s critical role

“Your pioneering work aligns with our provincial goals of fostering innovation, inclusivity, and excellence in healthcare service The dedication of your team exemplifies the spirit of community and resilience that we cherish ”

Former patient Qaqamba Cuba – fondly known as Angel by everyone at St Joseph’s – was

one of the guests who joined the celebration Born with congenital scoliosis, a severe spinal deformity that led to breathing complications, Angel later required a tracheostomy to help her breathe with the aid of a ventilator

She spent eight years at St Joseph’s, where she not only received this specialised, roundthe-clock care but also attended the onsite school from Grade 3 to Grade 7 during her recovery

Now 26 and pursuing her master’s degree, Angel reflected:

“The care I received here was very good I also benefited from the on-site school It’s so nice to come back and see that it’s still the same caring place ”

When 10-year-old Zachary was hit by a car, the accident left him

brain-damaged and in a coma

Doctors stabilised him, but due to bed capacity at public hospitals, referred him to St Joseph’s Intermediate Paediatric Care for restorative and rehabilitative care

His anxious parents, overwhelmed with the acuity of his condition, had no idea how to care for him at home and were relieved that there was a place for their son to receive the care he required

At St Joseph’s, Zachary spent six months receiving daily therapy, and his parents learned to manage his complex needs Slowly, he began to swallow, then move, then speak Today, Zachary is back at school and living the childhood that almost slipped away

LIMITEDSERVICES

Every year, hospitals across the Western Cape face overwhelming demand and limited bed capacity

While they provide immediate, life-saving intervention and stabilise young patients, they cannot keep children long enough to deliver the extended rehabilitative and restorative care they still require As a result, many children are referred to St Joseph’s Intermediate Paediatric Care rather than being discharged home prematurely or sent to community healthcare facilities that offer limited ongoing support

Without this crucial step of care, vulnerable children risk complications, repeated hospital readmissions, or even

preventable deaths

A comment from Raymond Foster, a grandparent of one of the young patients at St Joseph’s, emphasises its supportive role: “Our grandchild benefited from professional support and therapy that played an indispensable role in his development We ourselves also benefited from the profound guidance and care provided to us as his carers during working hours Congratulations on your 90 years and thank you for your love and endurance to see to the needs of children in need ”

It remains the only dedicated paediatric intermediate care facility in South Africa, offering 24/7 medical, nursing, and therapy support free of charge

With 175 beds and an average stay of 112 days, St Joseph’s serves around 300 children each year

Patients receive daily rehabilitation, on-site schooling, nutritional support, play and counselling therapy, while parents are trained to manage care at home when their child is discharged St Joseph’s calls on individuals, companies, and faith communities to be part of its 90year legacy of mercy and healing Join the 9 ZERO Challenge, share the story, or leave a legacy gift because every child deserves a safe transition from hospital to home, or, where cure is not possible, compassionate care at the end of life . delight for seasoned operagoers

Celebrated fashion designer Gavin Rajah brings theatrical flair to the stage with daring, contemporary silhouettes and clever bat-inspired motifs (a nod to the title Die Fledermaus means “The Bat” in German), perfectly paired with Allegra Bernacchioni’s fresh and stylish set design

LEWENSKIEKIE

Nee Selfone? Tablette in skole?

Call on Kuils River business community to step up

A quiet concern is growing among community leaders and parents in Kuils River: a noticeable lack of structured activities and positive outlets for the area’s youth

This observation points to a deeper issue of youth inactivity, which community advocates warn is a fertile ground for increased crime, antisocial behaviour, and long-term social challenges

On any given afternoon groups of young people can be seen with nowhere to go and little to do While not inherently problematic, this idleness, experts say, creates a vacuum that can easily be filled by negative influences

When young people are disengaged, without positive channels for their energy and creativity, they become vulnerable Boredom can quickly turn into mischief, petty crime, or worse, as they seek belonging and excitement elsewhere We are seeing the early signs of this and it is a cycle we must break

The dangers extend beyond crime Inactivity contributes to poor physical health, mental health struggles like depression and anxiety, and a pervasive sense of hopelessness about the future The result is not only a threat to the safety of the community but also a tragic waste of potential talent and ambition

Whose responsibility is it to address this?

While local government and non-profit organisations strive to make an impact, their resources are stretched thin There is a growing consensus that a crucial partner is missing from the equation: local business

Businesses in Kuils River can no longer afford to focus solely on their bottom line while the community around them faces a dire need The health of a business is intrinsically tied to the health of its community A community plagued by crime, hostility,

Spoil grandma and grandpa

The International Day of Older People is observed on 1 October each year On 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly designated 1 October as the International Day of Older Persons This was preceded by initiatives such as the Vienna international Plan of Action on Ageing, which was adopted by the 1982 World Assembly on Ageing and endorsed later that year by the UN General Assembly The holiday was observed for the first time on 1 October 1991 In 1991, the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Principles for Older Persons In 2002, the Second World Assembly on Ageing adopted The Political Declaration and the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing to respond to the opportunities and challenges of population ageing in the 21st century and to promote the development of a society for all ages

The number of older people (defined as those aged 65 years or older) tripled from around 260 million in 1980 to 761 million in 2021 Between 2021 and 2050, the global share of the older population is projected to increase from less than 10% to around 17% In societies with aging populations, it becomes imperative to adjust to the increasing number of elderly individuals who possess a diverse range of functional capacities

The capability to carry out essential functions and partake in everyday activities is influenced not solely by an individual's inherent capacity but also by the social and physical environments in which they reside Supportive environments such as family friends churches and local government play a pivotal role in assisting older persons to maintain their activity levels and independence as they progress in age

Older Persons Week is celebrated from 26 September to 2 October this year

Spoil grandpa and grandma by visiting or phone them If they stay far away video chat with them But what about an “appreciation day”? Celebrate by having dinner together Maybe you can show them something new on the cellphone Most important, tell them regularly that you love them and pray for them every day

‘n Ope brief aan die Stad Kaapstad

and a disengaged youth is bad for business It can deter customers make it difficult to attract and retain employees, and create an environment of instability that stifles economic growth

The notion of corporate social responsibility must move from being a peripheral PR exercise to a core business strategy We are not asking for handouts We are asking for partnership We need businesses to come on board and be genuine partners in community development

This partnership can take many forms: sponsoring local sports teams funding after-school art and music programmes, offering their premises for workshops, providing mentors, or creating dedicated internship and learnership opportunities for school-leavers The investment needed is not solely financial; expertise, time, and infrastructure are equally valuable

The long-term payoff of such investment is immense By helping to create a network of youth centres, sports leagues, and skills-development workshops to mention just a few, local businesses would be investing in a future generation of employees, customers, and community leaders They would help foster a culture of positivity, inclusivity, and pride, directly countering the allure of crime and antisocial behaviour

Transforming Kuils River from a potential hotspot of youth discontent into a hub of opportunity requires a collective effort

The youth need guidance and outlets, the community needs safety and hope Local businesses have a unique power and resources to help provide both The time for waiting is over The call is for Kuils River’s business community to step up and become the architects of a safer, more vibrant, and prosperous future for all FEZEKILE COTANI, Soneike, Kuils River

“Players also appreciate a trophy to remember the achievements during the tournament, as most of them come from a poor background are unemployed or in a low-income job and often depend on social grants

“Tangible prizes like a new bag, bat, gloves or a pair of trainers/spikes would make a significant difference in their ability to play the game
