BOYS CHALLENGED TO BE BEST VERSIONS OF THEMSELVES

Shaping future men CARINA ROUX sychologists of the Metro East Education District (MEED) hosted a Boy Learner Indaba at Kuils River Technical High School on Saturday 12 September. The initiative, from the Western Cape Education Department's (WCED) Inclusive

and Specialised Education Support (ISLES) directorate, is aimed at supporting boys in their development, to foster healthy, balanced and responsible young men who can contribute positively to their families, schools and communities. Around 360 boys, from grade 6 to 9, from 90 schools, attended the event.

The emphasis was on the role of males in South African society: young men are future fathers, partners, leaders and members of their communities who need positive role models, guidance and opportunities to develop a strong sense of identity, purpose, responsibility and respect. TO PAGE 2

The theme is "Blue is the new cool" and runners are encouraged to wear something blue to create awareness for people with disabilities. Prizes will be awarded for the top three in the wear blue competition, with vouchers up for grabs. In a panel discussion, some psychologists shared their backgrounds to show learners that circumstances did not hold them back.

THE ABSENCE OF ROLE MODELS Hein Vorster, an educational psychologist at MEED, shared statistics showing that most societal problems are perpetrated by men. He said it is crucial that boys are taught from a young age to become the healthy, well-balanced men, husbands and fathers they are supposed to be. Vorster noted that almost half of children grow up either without their biological fathers or without a positive relationship with them, and asked: who will teach the boys, who will demonstrate for them the model of what it means to be a real man? He used the metaphor of a house: men are designed to be the roof, the protectors, and women the walls that hold the roof up, the supporters. When men do not do the protecting, women are left defenceless and must do the protecting themselves, leaving men feeling unimportant and obsolete. With women doing men's work and fathers absent, boys gravitate towards wrong role models such as gang leaders, he said. Vorster said the team of educational psychologists at MEED is addressing this problem, not only through presentations to create awareness among teachers, but by male psychologists intentionally setting an example of the characteristics required of men in a society where roles have become distorted. Boys were invited to commit to becoming real men, good husbands and fathers. He added that boys need to be intentionally taught, not only about the values of real and good men, but also about girls. “These things cannot all be learnt in just one day, but somewhere and someday a start needs to be made. We sincerely believe that a Boy Learner Indaba like today is a good start,” he said. Vorster engaged the boys in exploring common themes shared by all males, emphasising the importance of taking ownership of their futures by choosing worthy role models.

BE YOUR BEST Dr Gillian Arendse, of the National Research Foundation's iThemba Labs, said in his keynote address, the boys' role in shaping the future is crucial. “If you want development and growth, you need focus.” Arendse said every person is born a genius, but life and peer pressure convince people otherwise. He urged the boys not to follow the crowd, but to commit to building themselves and discovering who they are. He compared people to icebergs, with only 10 percent visible, and said the hidden 90 percent shows through behaviour. He challenged them to be victors rather than victims, who blame, accuse and complain. Citing Jim Rohn's observation that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with, he urged them to surround themselves with people who allow them to grow. “Your circumstances do not determine where you go, they only determine where you start.” Quoting Steve Jobs, he said you cannot connect the dots looking forward, only looking back, and encouraged them to trust the process, take stock of past decisions and learn from their mistakes. “You are the sum of your actions, not your intentions,” he told them. Several boys responded to the request to share what they have learned. Two boys noted that they want to do and be better than their fathers. “I have learned to differentiate choices and decisions. As someone who grew up most years without a father, I also learned to do better than him. Seeing the mistakes that he has made, I want to make sure I become the best father that my father never was.” A primary school learner said he learned about making choices, and a few noted that the past does not have to define their future and that bad things can be overcome if you keep your eye on the goal. “I learned we need to grow into respectful men who do not use violence,” said another. Others noted: “Whatever we do, we must know there are consequences for our actions” and “Be the best version of your true self.”

Duane Horn from Jan Kriel School said he was not sure what to expect ahead of the event but enjoyed the interaction with other boys. “As a man, I should not be a hard shell. I should also be sensitive.”

Project 021 wins cultural award

ocal non-profit performing arts organisation Project 021 has been awarded the Western Cape Cultural Award for “Most Innovative Contribution in the Dance Discipline”. The awards, hosted by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) at the Artscape Theatre on Wednesday 9 September, recognise cultural, linguistic and heritage excellence in the province. Project 021, founded by David Cornelson, was one of two nominees in the category, alongside Philippi Art Centre. “The various achievements and milestones of Project 021, which contributed to us winning the award, is as a result of the collective efforts of our committed coaches, supportive parents and hard-working students,” said Cornelson. “Nothing of significance can be achieved without hard work and sacrifice. We are grateful to everyone who has contributed towards supporting our efforts to build stronger communities by creating opportunities for young people to thrive in their creative skills. What makes

Campus School celebrates senior citizens Kiddo honours

CARINA ROUX rolike Vinkies Educare in Sarepta celebrated their Grandparents’ Day on Wednesday 9 September, held this year in conjunction with Book Week. On arrival the grandparents had the chance to place their hand prints on a large tree poster, with their grandchildren’s names written alongside each print. Reverend Clive Rademeyer entertained young and old with his tricks and a message, using his puppet Dawie. The Cape Community Rhythms Band provided some soulful music and Shireen Brand read a story. Snacks were served to the grandparents. A group of boys performed a short act, with principal Veronica van de Linde reading the text and the children acting it out. The morning ended with some dancing. Guests were encouraged to bring a children’s reading book as their entry contribution, to help build a richer reading environment for the young learners.

Die rolprent is ’n verwerking van die eerste professionele verhoogstuk deur Hartzenberg, wat in Sarepta, Kuilsrivier, grootgeword het. Die stuk was in 2018 by die Stellenbosch Woordfees op die planke en het hom ’n feesbenoeming vir Beste opkomende kunstenaar besorg. Hartzenberg het die skermweergawe onafhanklik geﬁnansier en deur sy produksiemaatskappy Hartzenberg Films vervaardig. “Liefde is Rooi is so persoonlik vir my,” het Hartzenberg gesê. “Die storie het na my toe gekom toe ek op die rand van my ouma se bed gesit en saam met haar tee gedrink het. Audience has a say in whether Chester’s Got Talent Ventriloquist Conrad Koch is bringing his new show Chester’s Got Talent to Die Boer theatre in Durbanville on Thursday 24 September at 20:30. At the centre of the show is a live puppet talent competition where audiences get to decide what they think of Chester and his fellow performers. They can react, judge and have their say as each puppet takes to the stage. South Africa’s most outspoken puppet has never been particularly good at following instructions, and he certainly isn’t about to start now. Joining Chester are a cast of hilariously deranged dummies, including: Gunter the German Mosquito, showing off his questionable xylophone skills; Hilton the Ostrich, a dramatic bird attempting to make his mark as a singer; DJ Hoodie, the puppet who actually DJs; Mr Dixon, a high school teacher who thinks he can outdo Koch at ventriloquism; and Paul die Krokodil. “Chester’s Got Talent is basically what happens when your puppets stop listening to you,” says Koch. “The audience gets to be the judges, so they’re not just sitting back and watching the show, they’re part of it. Baroque Festival brings periodinstrument music town The 2026 Cape Town Baroque Festival runs from 19 to 27 September, featuring concerts, masterclasses and a study day on historical instruments across four Cape Town venues. Presented by the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra (CTBO), the festival spans repertoire from the Middle Ages through the early Classical era, performed on period instruments or copies of them. ie Alta du Toit-skool het verlede week ’n splinternuwe minibus van die Stad Kaapstad in ontvangs geneem. Marius Erasmus, die skoolhoof, het met die oorhandiging ’n prentjie geskets van die skool vir intellektueel gestremde leerders se uitdagings, maar ook insig gegee in hul werksaamhede en inisiatiewe soos ’n herwinningsprojek, ’n werkskaduprogram en die skool se gewilde marimbaorkes. Die skool se busse ry elke weeksdag 1 275 km om leerders op te laai en die voertuie moet gereeld vervang word wanneer dit vir permitdoeleindes te veel kilometers afgelê het. “Ons brandstofrekening is ongeveer R80 000 per maand,” het Erasmus gesê. Soos ander spesiale skole kry die skool ’n jaarlikse subsidie, maar dit skiet ver te kort. Die skool moet dus jaarliks miljoene self insamel om hul begroting te laat klop. “Hierdie geskenk is amper R1 miljoen werd. Ons het ’n busplan en het vir een bussie begroot, maar nou kan ons nog een koop, wat ons eers eintlik volgende jaar sou vervang. Hirra to celebrate 10th anniversary The Highbury Ratepayers and Residents Association (Hirra), founded on 14 July 2016, will celebrate its 10th anniversary on Heritage Day, Thursday 24 September, with a community event at Kuils River Technical High School. The celebration is themed “Smile Highbury Smile”. “It will be a simple celebration where Hirra will give away prizes ranging from R1 000 shopping vouchers, appliances such as air fryers, kettles, irons and toasters, all kindly sponsored by Elto Towers,” said Edmund du Plooy, chair of Hirra. Highbury hosts Heritage Day soccer tournament The second annual Heritage Day Soccer Tournament will take place at Excelsior Park in Highbury on Thursday 24 September from 08:00 to 16:00. Municipalities adding 16% proﬁt to your electricity bill Recently at the office, I received a message on my phone from my Fungi application — it’s time to load money for electricity again. From the conversation that followed with colleagues, it appears everyone has suddenly become several hundred rands worse off within a year. Some as much as R1 000 on their electricity bills. Then there are those who still receive a traditional electricity bill, on which astronomical amounts are simply loaded out of the blue. And to sort it out is nearly impossible. Meanwhile, you just have to pay, or the municipality will simply cut you off. The annual tug-of-war between Eskom and the price regulator, Nersa, leaves consumers increasingly cold. This, usually accompanied by talk that our electricity is actually still cheap. That’s why it remains sensible for those who can afford it to increasingly replace electricity consumption with self-sufficiency, for example through solar panels. The big snake in the grass, however, is profit-taking by metro councils and municipalities. On average, they load about 16% profit onto the consumer’s electricity bill. Some of the councils, which are notorious for poor management, wasteful spending and corruption, make up to a third of their income from electricity. It is time that serious questions are asked about this. The campaign for the local election is the ideal opportunity for voters to place this

on the agenda. Local government should in any case not be about party politics, but rather about service delivery. Ask your local candidates what their policy is on the cost of your electricity bill. Tell them that, rather than blue, yellow or green pamphlets with photos and old promises, this will determine your vote. Electricity bills should in principle be for electricity consumption. Other services must be handled according to a clear and accountable cost scale. Transparent and separate. Too large salary bills, too expensive vehicles, excessive entertainment and catering bills, and then the notorious tenders become too tasty a gravy train from our electricity bills. On top of that, we get no value for money — the overall state of service delivery speaks for itself. Most voters don’t get meals at work. They must pack their own sandwich or buy something at the work canteen, or elsewhere. Tshwane and Cape Town have already scrapped meals for general council meetings. They can easily go further and make sure this applies to all committee sittings as well. This is just one example of how a general and undefined profit levy on electricity bills can be abused. The number of councillors and duplicated functions with other government levels are further issues that need attention. The number of officials versus value in outputs is another issue. Candidate who make themselves available to become councillors should be informed about these matters. So, armed with a plan on how to reduce profit-taking on our electricity bills, wait for them with your electricity bill and get their position on record. Candidates who have voters’ interests at heart will show this through meaningful solutions. Animal bylaw ﬂawed and not applied fairly The Draft Animal Bylaw has already sparked widespread and valid public criticism. The reality is that the majority of animal and pet owners maintain their animals to a high standard of care and are not dependent on welfare organisations. In fact, many owners actively support and donate to welfare initiatives. When compared to the broader pet–keeping community, welfare statistics represent only a small fraction of the overall picture. Yet, the

motivations presented by the CoCT suggest that animal welfare organisations have proportionately inﬂuenced the drafting of this bylaw. Breed associations, clubs, and other key stakeholders were not consulted, while welfare groups appear to have been the primary voices engaged. It is also publicly acknowledged that enforcement of existing laws is inconsistent. For example, livestock roaming freely in Kuils River and along the N2 pose a

Neem ook in ag ek het die Stad Kaapstad ook gebel, ’n verwysingsnommer gekry en tot nou toe niks verder [gehoor] nie. Wat regtig aan my vreet, is dat hierdie nuwe verordeninge net geleentheid vir korrupsie gaan skep. Now is the time to think differently about how you use water resources Premier Alan Winde recently issued what he called a “call to action”, urging Western Cape residents to prepare for a hotter, drier summer driven by a particularly strong El Niño cycle. We would do well to listen. The province has allocated R12 million for the upcoming fire season, which has already started earlier than expected, with a wildfire reported in the Cape Winelands in late August. While dam levels may look acceptable on paper, the Premier rightly cautioned that the severe flooding in May does not mean we received enough rain to secure our water resources through summer. El Niño brings warmer-than-normal temperatures and below-average rainfall. If it lingers for six to nine months, as

experts warn it could, we could find ourselves in a precarious position. This is not a time for complacency. We have been here before. We know what nearing day zero felt like, and we know what it took to pull back from the brink. The Premier's warning should not be filed away as another government press release. It is a heads-up from a man who has seen the modelling and does not like what it shows. Now is the time to start thinking differently about water use, to clear vegetation around properties in fire-risk areas, and to take seriously the simple measures that could make a real difference when the heat arrives. CoCT’s animal bylaw not designed to aid animals I am shocked to see a heavily redacted and slanted version of the proposed animal keeping bylaw published in the media. This is clearly a version of the proposed bylaw put out by the City of Cape Town’s PR department. This proposed bylaw is impossible to implement in the townships as we have seen during the last 20 years where animal welfare is left completely in the hands of public donations and volunteers. The article makes no mention of the proposed bylaw giving the City the right to raid our homes without a warrant, to conﬁscate pets, to charge a permit fee for every pet, to make regular rabies vaccination mandatory. ie Kuilsrivier-rolbalklub wat jaarliks rolbalspelers bymekaar bring vir ’n goeie doel het op Saterdag 12 September 'n toernooi ten bate van die Alta du Toitskool aangebied. Altesaam 56 spelers van klubs, waaronder Langebaan, Old Oak, Strand, Kraaifontein, Yzerfontein en Kuilsrivier, het deelgeneem. Hoewel daar gesonde kompetisie was, het die spelers hul ondersteuning vir ’n verdienstelike saak gewys. Die geleentheid is moontlik gemaak

danksy die borgskap van Rock Properties, Marais, Muller & Hendricks Prokureurs en Steenser-konstruksie. Die dag is op ’n gesellige noot afgesluit met die prysuitdeling, veiling en ’n aandete. Geld is ook met ’n veiling en lootjieverkope ingesamel. Verskeie pryse is vir die veiling geskenk, waaronder ’n dubbelbedmatras van Mattrest en verskeie pryse van individue. Die klub bedank al die spelers, borge, skenkers en ondersteuners wat gehelp het om die dag ’n sukses te maak.

Die toernooi se wenpan van Kuilsrivier-rolbalklub. Van links is Willie Nel (wedstrydsekretaris), Marius Louw, Adel Louw, Elzanne Bensley, Graeme Bensley, Cobus Carstens (Rock Properties) en Marius Erasmus (hoof van Alta du Toitskool).

AFRIL FILLIES occer legends from across the Western Cape showed they can still teach the young ones how it is done at the Walking Community Fun Day on Sunday 13 September in Belgravia. The event, a fundraiser to assist soccer legend Farouk Abraham with his cancer treatment, was organised in collaboration with Farouk Abrahams Goalkeeper Academy, Football Kings and Walking Football Cape Town, amongst others. A total of 16 soccer teams participated in the five-aside event and represented families, businesses, ex-clubs and community organisations. The teams were Santos, Hellenic, Battswood, Cape Town Spurs, Glendene, Wynberg St. Johns, Walking for health, Gladiators, Simply the Best, Davids Family, Adams Family, Walking Football Cape Town Elders, Hammertime, Kuils River, Play sport 4 Life, Astro Paints, Schaapkraal Warriors, Federation Legends, Duncan Crowie Legends and All Star Legends.
