he City of Cape Town and the South African Police Service disagree over the true state of convictions for illegal firearm possession. The City claims only 5% of cases over four years involving firearms seized by municipal officers have led to guilty verdicts. The police have strongly

rejected this. The difference lies in how conviction rates are calculated. While the police reports conviction rates of up to 89% in recent years for cases that proceed to trial, the City argues most firearm arrests never make it to court, rendering the police’s figures misleading. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said the City’s law-enforcement

s crime levels in Cape Town become untenable, the need to devolve certain national policing powers to the City's metro police has become more urgent that ever before. Having not had any meaningful reply on this topic from the National Police Commissioner in a previous letter from Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, the City last week said that its safety and security portfolio committee will now table a resolution at the next council meeting calling on the national government to devolve certain policing powers to the City in terms of the intergovernmental dispute framework. These legislative powers would include investigative authority over specific crime categories such as gang-related violence, firearm offences, extortion, and drug trafficking. Additionally, the responsibility for crime intelligence should be devolved to the City, and the City should also be assigned the function of managing forensic laboratory testing centres related to firearms. "This means our officers will be able to investigate criminal cases. When a crime is committed they will open/file a case docket and present it to the National Prosecuting Authority for prosecution and present the evidence in court with the prosecutor in front of a presiding judge or magistrate," chair of the safety and security portfolio committee, Mzwakhe

Smith explained when a firearm arrest is executed by City enforcement officers the firearm and docket is handed over to detectives who are mandated to see these matters through court. “Our data shows that 49,5% of the (1 670) cases were deemed by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) as having either insufficient evidence or no realistic prospects of prosecution, a stark indication of the lack of detective resources to conclude a comprehensive investigation.” CALL FOR GREATER POWERS The City is pushing for criminal investigative powers to be devolved to its officers under the South African Police Act, enabling them to build their own dockets and support prosecution more directly. A draft set of regulations already workshopped with police and other stakeholders will soon be submitted to the national police minister for consideration. The City has bolstered its crime-fighting capacity by deploying more than 1100 new officers since 2021 and investing R800 million in advanced policing technology such as gunshot detection, drones, and automated number-plate recognition systems. A special training module has been rolled out to equip officers with the skills needed for docket-building and statementtaking in preparation for the hoped-for expanded powers. POLICE Police have rejected the City’s 5% figure, describing it as misleading and potentially undermining public trust in the police. In a statement issued on 4 June, provincial police spokesperson Col André Traut stated that conviction rates for illegal firearm possession had consistently remained high – 86% in both the 2021-’22 and 2022-’23 financial years, and 89% in 2023-’24. These figures, he said, represent all successful prosecutions across the province, involving firearms confiscated by the police and other law enforcement agencies.

“Our communities are plagued by crime at all levels ... more is needed from the police and the City.” - Mzwakhe Nqvashe Nqvashe, told TygerBurger. "Currently we do not have access to crime intelligence data. We are not shown by the South African Police Service where crime is likely to happen the next day or weekend. What we get to see with everyone else is the unhelpful threemonths-old quarterly crime stats which tells us what has already happened. Contrary to this, we want to know through crime intelligence what criminals are planning to do in future so that we can prevent, disrupt and arrest perpetrators especial in the category of gang violence, murder and extortion." COURT DELAYS Insofar as ballistic testing by metro police goes, Nqvashe said laboratory evidence would be admissible as evidence in court as it is currently happening. "The problem currently is national government is unable to run these labs optimally and efficiently. It is known that labs have a backlog on cases like firearm ballistics and DNA tests, with waiting periods of six months and more. He explains that these delays cause criminal cases to be struck off the court

“Firearm-related crime remains a top priority for police in the Western Cape,” Traut said. “Our officers are relentlessly pursuing armed criminals, aiming not only to remove illegal firearms from our communities but also to ensure successful prosecution.” Traut claimed the City’s figures are inaccurate. “An analysis of our conviction record paints a far more accurate and encouraging picture. Our detectives have consistently achieved strong conviction rates.” COOPERATION GAP As gun violence continues to plague many Cape Town communities both the City and the police agree on the need for stronger enforcement. The City maintains it is ready to play a larger role. The City has expressed frustration at a lack of access to real-time updates from the police on firearm cases and the whereabouts of confiscated weapons. Despite a Memorandum of Cooperation signed in 2024 between the police, the City, and the Western Cape Government, datasharing seems limited. Following a high-level meeting in March the police invited district commanders to work more closely with the City to improve information flow on pending cases. The City has also submitted a Promotion of Access to Information Act (Paia) request to gain deeper insights into the reasons for stagnation in specific cases. “The City of Cape Town is committing to assisting the police to address the gun violence. We believe our track record has shown that despite the limited resources and policing powers, we have made a massive impact in the fight against crime and we are ready to do more. It would be helpful if we could all agree on the broader definition of conviction rate which would aid the public in better understanding the issues," said Smith. Smith added the City also maintained an open-door policy for any police investigating officers who need to follow up on specific case dockets with City arresting officers.

The police do not have the manpower and the City’s uniformed staff do not have the power to undertake investigations into firearm confiscations, and other crimes," he says. He emphasises that in recent years the City has established specialised units such as the metro police gang and drug task team, increased visible policing through the Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP), and invested in advanced technology including CCTV, gunshot detection systems, drones, and more. "Yet the situation remains untenable," he states. "Our residents continue to live in fear, children are unable to play safely outdoors, and criminals still control our streets."

he theme of this year’s National Child Protection Week, “Working together in ending violence against children”, served as a call to action to break the silence around abuse and promote collaborative responsibility. The Metro East Education District (MEED) launched National Child Protection Week, that was observed from 29 May to 5 June, with an event at the district office on Friday 30 May. Opening the event, Hurschele Carolissen, head of Institutional Management and Governance at MEED, welcomed attendees with stirring words. “Every child deserves to feel safe, seen, and loved. Not just sometimes. Always,” he said, calling on all stakeholders - teachers, officials, and community members - to play an active role in protecting children. Keynote speakers included Dr Genine Josias and Dr Rhene de Villiers from the Thuthuzela Care Centres (TCCs) at Karl Bremer and Victoria Hospitals respectively. The TCC network is a national initiative aimed at providing comprehensive support to survivors of sexual violence. These services include forensic examinations, counselling, HIV prevention, and legal support, all aimed at reducing secondary trauma and improving access to justice. Their presentations highlighted the scale of sexual and gender-based violence affecting minors and emphasised the crucial role that education officials play in prevention and response.

“As kids we have the right to be safe from harm and abuse, the right to have a voice and be heard.” - Zukhanye Sipamla said. Zukhanye Sipamla, a Gr 6 learner of Irista Primary School, gave a heartfelt speech at the event. "As kids we have the right to be safe from harm and abuse, the right to have a voice and be heard," he said. "Let’s look out for each other and tell a trusted adult if we see someone being bullied or hurt.” The launch is being followed by districtwide activities including teacher training, parent engagement sessions, and learner awareness initiatives. With only nine school social workers across Metro East and each serving around 20 schools, officials are urging broader involvement. Carolissen said Child Protection Week is as reminder of collaborative power. “It’s not about ticking boxes or putting up posters. It’s about real children with real stories—and about our responsibility to stand up, speak out, and act when it matters most. Child protection is not a one-person job. It takes all of us, working from the heart.”

Sweet, sweet victory: The 2025 edition of the Bayhill Premier Cup for under-19 soccer teams, hosted in Cape Town in April, saw 32 teams compete – 18 from the Western Cape, and 14 from other South African provinces and abroad. Local team Ubuntu Football Academy from Masiphumelele was crowned as champions after beating Randburg AFC 2–0 at the ﬁnal held at Athlone stadium. As of March, the City had reached nearly 65% of its targets for both water and sewer pipe replacements citywide in 2024/25 as part of a bold push to upgrade critical infrastructure.

The intention is for Adopt a Tree to assist in expanding the urban canopy and offering more sustainable, greener spaces for all communities to enjoy. With its Adopt a Tree initiative, the City hopes to mobilise community organisations and residents to plant at least 500 trees across town during planting season, which starts with the ﬁrst winter rains. Residents can submit applications for general tree planting to their local ward councillor. Obtain the necessary form by entering ‘Tree planting’ in the search box on the City’s website. The City’s Newlands nursery will help select appropriate species for various sites based on space availability, environmental impact, and maintenance requirements. Especially for Adopt a Tree, the nursery will have trees available in smaller bag sizes of up to 100 litres, ensuring easier handling and planting. Planting of the resilient, indigenous white milkwood tree (Sideroxylon inerme) will be encouraged as far as possible, being South Africa’s national tree of 2025.

Since 2023, the City has invested R131 million in replacing and relocating 42 949 water meters at business and residential properties to ensure easier reading and more accurate billing. The final stages of this project for 2024/25 are rolling out in Gugulethu, Nyanga East, New Crossroads, Delft (Voorbrug, Eindhoven and The Hague), Belhar, Hanover Park, Manenberg, Pinati Estate, Newfields, Athlone, Rylands, Surrey Estate, Heideveld, Bonteheuwel, Kalksteenfontein, Bishop Lavis, Elsies River, Clarkes Estate, Leonsdale and Ravensmead. Spending where it matters will see Cape Town ﬂourish

t the end of March, we tabled the fourth – and secondlast – budget of this term of ofﬁce. We will soon conclude public participation on the budget and then vote in Council to adopt it. Looking back on the past three and a half years, it is encouraging to see so many of our biggest infrastructure investments and milestones being realised and reached. Initially, the ever-increasing targets of pipe replacements, road repairs, power procurement and affordable housing seemed daunting. But we have stuck to our promise of increasing our infrastructure spending on each new budget, and we are 100% on track to deliver what we pledged. This record investment in Cape Town’s infrastructure is not a luxury or mere nice-to-have. You only need to look at every other South African metro, where timeous investments have not been made, to know that our budget priorities are critical and urgent. Spending on infrastructure is non-negotiable if Cape Town is to avoid the fate of those other cities. We’re ramping up our water and sanitation investments, particularly in lower-income communities, where

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE MAYOR proper sanitation is the biggest enabler of a life of dignity. In addition to our multi-billion-rand upgrades of wastewater treatment works, the Cape Flats bulk sewer upgrade is the biggest project of its kind in South Africa. Likewise, our MyCiTi expansion into the metro southeast, connecting Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain and other communities with Wynberg and Claremont, is the biggest such project ever undertaken in our country. As part of the penultimate phase of this MyCiTi expansion, we have just broken ground in Claremont, and

we are seeing wonderful progress on our “Sky Circle” in Lansdowne. Once completed, this route will be a true gamechanger for many Capetonians. Perhaps the biggest news from the 2025/26 budget, however, is the R6,7 billion spend on safety and security, which will see 700 new municipal police ofﬁcers deployed across town. These are in addition to the 400 ofﬁcers we’ve added since the start of the term. We continue to lobby for more policing powers from National Government so that we can effectively investigate crimes and get criminals locked up. Yet we’re also investing heavily in our own boots on the ground to take back our communities from gangsters, drug dealers and other criminals. These are some of the budget highlights that will future-proof our city and prepare it for the population and economic growth that is headed our way. Against a backdrop of municipal collapse elsewhere, we are bucking the trend in South Africa and showing that decline and failure is preventable. It is indeed possible to build a city of hope. R2,8 bn secured to gear up our electricity grid

Up until June 2027, the City will be spending R39,5 billion on infrastructure in the country’s largest ever three-year infrastructure investment by a metro. This includes investing over R4 billion in electricity grid upgrades and maintenance, which will be partly funded by a R2,8 billion concessional loan recently obtained from German development bank KfW. Other external ﬁnance secured in recent years include R3,5 billion from Nedbank and R2,8 billion from the International Finance Corporation (both in June 2024), as well as €100 million from the Agence Française de Développement (in April 2023).

Major sewer infrastructure upgrades take shape

Two sanitation projects under way in Area East should relieve pressure on infrastructure in the area and improve sanitation services.

T First meeting for catchment management forum The Eerste/Kuils River Catchment Management Forum (EKR CMF) had its inaugural meeting in March. The purpose of the forum is to promote community-driven initiatives aimed at breathing new life into the catchment’s polluted rivers and the areas around them. Some of the sources of pollution include informal settlements, runoff from vehicle wash areas and farming activities, treated efﬂuent from wastewater treatment works, sewer spills, polluted industrial efﬂuent, sewer pump station failures, solid waste, and illegal dumping. Capetonians who reside, work or operate businesses in the area or conduct industrial or agricultural activities in and around the catchment are invited to join the forum and help make the catchment’s rivers and watercourses more liveable.

station until the proposed campsite is approved. The project has been divided into four staggered work packages, the ﬁrst of which – along De Villiers Street – is set to be completed by the end of January 2026. A window of two to three months between each package start date will allow for over-pumping.

o help rid Strand and Gordon’s Bay residents of frequent sewer overflows, the critical upgrade of the Trappies bulk sewer and construction of the Gordon’s Bay pump station and rising main are in full swing. Trappies gets cured By restoring the 900 mm-diameter section of this bulk sewer line in Strand, the City hopes to restore optimal functioning and reduce failures and overflows, particularly during heavy winter rains. Work extends over 2,3 km from the Main Road and De Villiers Street intersection to the Lourens river sewer pump station. The City will be using cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) technology, a trenchless method that inserts and cures a liner inside the existing pipe, effectively restoring it to a near-new condition. The contractor started on-site in early April, with the site camp temporarily set up at the Lourens river pump

About the catchment One of the largest in Cape Town, the Eerste/Kuils river catchment comprises not only the Eerste and Kuils rivers, but also another ﬁve tributary rivers and watercourses, including Bottelary river, Kleinvlei canal and Helderspruit river. The catchment extends over 37 wards and eight subcouncils, covering 652 km² in total. The Eerste and Kuils rivers pass through suburbs such as Macassar, Sandvlei, Kuils River, Brackenfell, Driftsands, Faure, Forest Village, Mfuleni, Blue Downs, Rotterdam, Wesbank, Kalkfontein, Brackenfell, Durbanville and many more.

Building sanitation capacity: The Trappies bulk sewer rehab and Gordon’s Bay pump station construction are key infrastructure upgrades that will help tackle sewer overﬂows in Strand and Gordon’s Bay. The ﬁrst to be delivered will be the Gordon’s Bay pump station project, with construction over halfway (pictured top left) and about a third of the rising main installed (top right).

Bursary boost to build scarce skills: Ald Theresa Uys, Mayco member for Corporate Services, with some of the 26 young Capetonians from across town who have been awarded City bursaries to pursue studies in the fields of Accounting, Computer Science, Information Technology and Systems, Engineering, Law, and Urban Planning – all areas with scarce-skills gaps. Beneficiaries are expected to work back their bursaries after graduating. The competitive selection process took into account financial need, academic results, interview performance, and the City’s own strategic workforce plans. This new cohort raises the total number of City bursars to 43.

Mending Macassar rentals: The City’s maintenance blitz campaign reached community residential units (CRUs) in Macassar in April. On these maintenance days, dedicated City teams carry out a broad spectrum of repairs and upgrades at specific complexes to improve safety and deliver dignity to Council’s tenants. Over the next few years, R1,2 billion will be spent on the upkeep of the City’s CRUs metrowide. Work typically includes repairs to gutters, stairs, refuse huts and staircase rails, the installation of new cupboards, the addition of washing lines, removing graffiti, replacing window panes, fixing area lighting, plug sockets and light switches, jetting sewer lines, and attending to domestic plumbing issues.

Pump station rising from the ground The Gordon’s Bay pump station project, in turn, will reduce pressure on the Trappies bulk sewer by diverting sewage from Gordon’s Bay to the Sir Lowry’s Pass outfall sewer via a 7,5 km rising main. Construction of the pump station, comprising a wet well, dry well, motor control room, generator and ablutions, is over halfway done. Installation of 2,6 km of the rising main is complete, and three of the 13 air valve chambers have been built. Moreover, ﬁve of the seven microtunnelling crossings are done, with the sixth one nearly halfway. The anticipated completion date is December 2025.

Resurfacing of Ntlazane Road between Ntsikizi and Lindela streets in Khayelitsha is done. Existing stormwater catchpits and manholes have also been repaired, sections of the pavements reinstated, and kerbs and channels replaced. More resurfacing took place in Sarepta (Cornelissen and Sonneblom crescents, Kannemeyer, Heath, Petunia, Kappertjie, Aandblom, Clarica, Violet, Wes and Dahlia streets), Kalkfontein (Magrieta, Verenigde, Chris Hani,

Sikelela, Reuter and Elmarie streets), Fairdale (Parliament, Incora and Umbhashe streets), Eerste River South (Beaulieu and Gorgon roads), Mfuleni (Nkhola Crescent) and Driftsands (Valangentabo, Xwayi, Duif and Tiwani streets). In addition, the City is proposing trafﬁc calming measures in Somerset West, Khayelitsha, Blue Downs, Mitchells Plain, Eerste River, Philippi, Kuils River, Blackheath, Mandalay and Mfuleni City to enhance pedestrian safety. The focus would be on areas surrounding schools. The City is awaiting residents’ comments.

4 CITYNEWS Stakeholders weigh in on LUM update

At a City-hosted Planning Indaba in March, ofﬁcials, private-sector professionals, academics, NGOs, neighbouring municipalities and state-owned entities brainstormed key factors to be considered in the City’s 2025 update of its land use model (LUM). Stakeholders deliberated on new spatial and urbanisation trends, estimates and assumptions that have emerged since 2020, when the current LUM was generated in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. They also discussed the possible impact of Cape Town’s long-term population growth on engineering infrastructure and community facilities. No room for error … Getting the LUM update right is important. The model not only guides the City’s spatial policies, but also informs its long-term planning for engineering services. Engineering services relate to the infrastructure required to provide essential basic services such as roads, water and sanitation, electricity, public housing, community facilities, schools and health facilities. Soon, Cape Town will have a population of over ﬁve million, with growth to seven million anticipated by 2050. The City must plan as best it can for this increase in people and their needs. At the same time, the administration must ensure that precious natural and heritage resources are protected, and that the right type of development occurs in the right place and is supported by adequate services infrastructure.

Deeds delivered to Macassar doors

The Deed-to-Door campaign continues to roll out title deeds to qualifying beneﬁciaries, providing them with formal proof of ownership and security of tenure.

everal Macassar families recently received the title deeds to their homes as part of the City’s metro-wide Deed-to-Door campaign. A City services roadshow, held at the same time, offered residents an opportunity to speak to metro ofﬁcials right there on their doorstep.

Due for a deed? If you or a relative are a beneficiary of a City unit, but haven’t received the title deed, visit a City services roadshow in your area, or go to the Human Settlements kiosk on the second floor of the Cape Town Civic on weekdays, 09:00–12:00. Take along the ID of the owner and spouse (if applicable), the marriage certificate (if applicable), and in the event of a deceased owner, the death certificate and a letter of authority. Alternatively, send a request to housing.db@capetown.gov.za or title.deeds@capetown.gov.za. Put the erf number and area in the subject line, and the registered deed holder’s name and surname, ID number and address in the body of the email.

To see whether the title deed for your property is on the list of available deeds, do visit a City roadshow when in your area. Claiming your deed will offer you security of tenure as well as formalise your ownership. The City’s roadshows are an opportunity for you to interact directly with Human Settlements ofﬁcials and have your questions answered. All other City services departments are also available at these events to provide information and assistance.

Cape Town salutes Fugard and Fine In March, the City was saddened to learn of the passing of two stalwarts who were deeply connected to the Mother City. Playwright and director Athol Fugard’s connection to Cape Town was both personal and professional. He attended the University of Cape Town, where he studied Philosophy and Anthropology before dedicating himself entirely to the arts. In 2010, he was honoured with the opening of the Fugard Theatre in historic District Six. He received accolades such as the National Order of Ikhamanga in Silver in 2005 and Civic Honours from the City in 2023, and was strongly committed to justice and equality. He passed away on 8 March at the age of 92. Former Cape Town mayor Patricia Fine’s tenure coincided with South Africa’s transition to democracy, being elected to ofﬁce in late 1993 and serving until the country’s ﬁrst democratic local government elections in 1995. She will be remembered for working tirelessly to bridge political divides during a pivotal time in South Africa’s history. She passed away on 2 March following a courageous battle with cancer.

n recognition of National Menstrual Hygiene Day, the Clicks Helping Hand Trust, together with Gift of the Givers, Always, Libresse and Mina Cup Foundation, helped address period poverty by distributing menstrual hygiene products to girls of Kalkfontein Primary School on Friday 28 May. The initiative supported the global theme, “Together for a Period Friendly World”, which calls for collective efforts to ensure menstruation does not hinder access to education, health, or opportunity. “It is estimated around seven million girls in South Africa do not have access to

Dream big and be the agent of your own life In a world shaped by systems one's mindset is the one thing that can set one free, and set one apart. It's not your background, your bank account, or even your education that determines your future; it's the way you think. All these things are useless when the mind is blind. When you dare to think differently, to question what's around you and craft your own path you step into your power. That's what truly separates those who succeed from those who settle. I learnt this early, not from textbooks but from watching people accept the life they never chose. Where I come from in the Boland it's common to see young people finish school only to end up in predictable jobs on farms, in restaurants, behind counters. Honest work, yes, but not always born from dreams. Too often it's just what's available. Just what's handed to you. But what if we didn't accept what's handed to us? At the age of 10 I began dreaming of a life beyond what I saw, beyond my colourful essays. I didn't know where exactly I was going, but I knew I couldn't allow my environment to shrink my imagination. I crafted a universe in my mind, one where I could break cycles, define my own success and live with purpose. Even at this age I do that. Life is by no means easy. Life tests you in subtle and serious ways, through finances, health, limited access, just to name a few. It throws you a general dish, a one-size fits all blanket and tells you to be grateful.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO BE DIFFERENT; IT’S OFTEN YOUR GREATEST STRENGTH. But I refused to accept the idea that this was all there was. And that refusal became my strength. My father once told me "smooth seas never made skilled sailors, and when you are born into a system your first act of freedom is to question it." That quote has never left me. It's guided the way I move through the world. Systems, political, economic, educational, the media don't just shape what's possible for us, but how we think what is possible. And if you don't break free of the script you were handed you'll play a role you never auditioned for. June is Youth Month and this year's theme, "Skills for the Changing World, Empowering Youth for Meaningful Economic Participation", points us towards the future. Mindset is the hidden engine driving our choices, fuelling our creativity and expanding our vision. It's that small spark that says "there must be more than this." Thoughts are powerful. They come from what we consume in our conversations, our culture, our environment. But when you start thinking independently everything changes. You stop chasing appearances and start building substance. You stop measuring your worth by what you wear, where you live or what you drive and start defining success on your own terms. After all, one of the greatest traps of our time is an obsession with looking successful. What sets you apart, really, is how deeply you think, how courageously you act, and how consistently you build, what you're planting when no-one is watching. That's the difference maker. You know, "be the change you want to see." If there's one thing I want young people (like myself) to take from this Youth Month, it's this: Don't be afraid to be different; it's often your greatest strength. Who benefits when property prices explode? An absurd budget yes, a home bought in 1990 for R132 000 is now suddenly R4 million worth. Most of us could afford a home of R130 000 in 1990 but not a home of R4 million today. In the meantime most became pensioners too, and some with zero pension. So what have gone up in the last 30 years of bond period? Building, material and labour cost? So my home still is worth R130 000 because we could afford it, not the property, but the monthly bond payback premiums. Also, are the property marketing companies flairing up the value over the years by comparing property values with replacement cost to earn more sales commissions? The difference between a R130 000 property and a R4 million property monthly bond premiums is way out and for most of us unaffordable! Those fixed tariff benefits can't be legal, because why do pay a monthly property tax? For what? We bought the plots to build, according to the municipal rules and regulations, by the developer or private owner and it's registered on our name, so why the property tax?Is their a binding contract between

home owners and the municipality? Does the contract make room for future additional tarrifs? No, because they think they own us and can do as they feel and get away with it because they think they are every propery owners government. I declare here and publicly that I refuse to pay an extra monthly tariff fee for clean-up. The City "Masters" must choose: either the property tax go or all the extra tariffs go. I clean my street in front of my paid-up property myself. We are not the waisters. Rus in vrede, Christa Pligsgetrou en hardwerkend was Christa Cronjé van Parow-Noord haar lewe lank. In die jare sewentig was sy baie lank die saalsekretaresse by Tygerberg-hospitaal se hartsaal A6, waar sy 'n leeftyd se vriende gemaak het. Prof. Helmut Weich was haar hoof. Sy was ook een van die eerste mense wat met prof. Chris Barnard gepraat het nadat hy destyds die wêreld se eerste hart oorgeplant het. Dit was in 1974, toe Barnard direk ná die operasie die hoofkardioloog by die Tygerberg-hospitaal, prof. Helmut Weich, bel met dié groot nuus. Baie lank daarna, toe ek as pasiënt by prof. Weich se privaat praktyk was en hy hoor ons is susters, het hy met groot lof van A6 se mev. Christa Cronje gepraat, met baie groete ook aan haar. Kort daarna is hy oorlede. Nou onlangs met my suster se opname in die Mediclinic Panorama se hoësorgeenheid, het sy seun, ook prof. Helmut Weich, die laaste prosedure op haar uitgevoer. Christa is op 19 Mei oorlede. Sy sou op 9 Julie 90 word. Christa was 'n bekende by die markte in Milnerton, Parow en ook by die oudhedehandelaars daar. Sy was baie gesond, het geen kroniese medikasie gebruik nie, het geen oog- of gehoorprobleme gehad nie, maar het begin ly onder rugpyne, wat haar mobiliteit en kragte verswak het. Cronjé was die ensiklopedie en dagboek van haar hele groot familie ... en 'n staaltjieverteller van formaat! Sy was werklik legendaries in haar kringe. Rus in vrede, Christa! "During my years in practice, I've come to understand that divorce is not simply a legal ending. It is a relational rupture that leaves lasting imprints - not just on the separating couple, but on the child, the extended family and even the community around them. It reaches into the classroom, the clinic, the court and even the workplace. And when not handled with care, it can affect the next generation too," she said. According to the latest divorce statistics in South Africa, between 2021 and 2022 there was a 10,9% increase in the number of divorces, rising to 20 196 divorce

orders, according to Bredekamp. "This represents a notable upward shift pointing to the ongoing fragility of marital unions in our country. A significant gender disparity was observed in divorce initiation - 55,8% of divorces were filed by women, while 32,2% were initiated by men. Among the population groups, women of colour had the highest proportion of female plaintiffs, standing at 63,2. In terms of age, the median age at divorce was 46 years for men and 42 years for women. The peak age range for divorce across all population groups was 35 to 49 years for men and 35 to 39 years for women," she said. "This aligns with midlife transitions where family, work and personal strain often converge. In examining marriage duration, 42,2% of divorces occurred within the first 10 years of marriage, highlighting that the early years remain the most vulnerable period for marital dissolution. The impact of children is considerable - 55,3% of divorces involved children under the age of 18, affecting a reported 18 850 children," she said. "This crisis is particularly acute in divorces that occur within the first 10 years of marriage, when children are at a crucial stage of development. During these years, children need consistency and emotional security to form stable attachments with their parents. Young children struggling to make sense of their parents' divorce often internalise blame, develop abandonment fears and later struggle with trust and relational stability," she said. "Children fare best when protected by consistent caregiving, reduced conflict and emotional support. It is not the divorce itself but the surrounding instability, unresolved parental conflict and emotional neglect that cause the long-term harm. Stability through predictable routines, housing and schooling helps children feel safe,” she said. THERAPEUTIC SUPPORT "Therapeutic support and responsive schools further aid recovery. Divorce is not just the end of a marriage, it requires forming a new parenting alliance

- a co-parenting relationship that supports the child during the childhood years. "Parental therapy and psychoeducation are vital. Parents must manage their own emotional responses to avoid passing emotional distress on to their children.," she said. "When they work together with their child's best interests at heart, families can rebuild, not in spite of divorce, but through it. Our responsibility as a society is to build environments where children do more than survive divorce, environments where they grow, thrive and feel emotionally secure as they navigate life's transitions. Let us ensure they are seen, heard and protected every step of the way," she said.

BICYCLE LEAGUE CHAMPS CROWNED AT DEVONBOSCH

highly successful Bicycle League season wrapped up with an exciting Western Cape Regional Final on Saturday 24 May at Devonbosch. Twenty primary schools from four districts competed in a spirited showdown, showcasing strong individual and team performances. Schools competed in gender-based teams, with the top five individual results per school combined to determine overall standings. Gene Louw and Eversdal claimed the boys’ and girls’ titles, scoring 850 and 830 points respectively. In the boys’ division, Mikro placed second with 750 points, followed by Applewood from Elgin (598). The girls’ competition saw a tie for second between Mikro and Bruckner de Villiers of Idas Valley (both on 740 points), with Eversdal taking the win. Independent riders from non-participating schools were also

included. Backed by the EduInnov8 Foundation and run by Cycle2Ride, the Bicycle League is about more than racing. A structured qualification system supports fair growth, with cluster, district and regional events. Categories are capped at 40 riders, and the top five in each earn podium medals. This season, 25 events were held, leading to the finals. Based on the ShortTrack/ XCC format, the League uses short, non-technical courses and quick races to keep cycling accessible. Events are held midweek, making it easier for schools to participate. “Courses are beginner-friendly but exciting, and midweek racing fits into the school calendar,” says programme director Meurant Botha. Bayview Youth Cup kicks off AVRIL FILLIES Excitement is mounting in Mitchell's Plain for the start of the 10th u-16 Bayview Youth Cup which will be launched on Monday 16 June at Mondale High School. A total of 64 teams from all over the Western Cape as far as Beaufort West and Namibia will participate and the current champions are Ubuntu who beat Cape Town Spurs in the final 2-0 last year. "Games will kick off at 09:00 at Strandfontein Sports Field and 336 games per week will be played. The finals will be on Sunday 16 August in Athlone Stadium," says Mark Rodrigues, chair of Bayview Football Club. The 64 teams will be split into 16 groups of four and the first shots of the tournament will be fired on Sunday 29 June until Sunday16 August. For six days teams will battle it out for the honours to be crowned the Bayview Youth Cup Champions. Duncan Crowie a, retired striker and former Bafana Bafana player, will be at the launch. Crowie played for Lightbody Santos in the Federation Professional League before soccer in SA was united to form the current Premier Soccer League. He was the top scorer in the 1989 Federation Professional League season with 19 goals and helped Santos to finish second in the league. He started his senior soccer career at Glendene United and played for the team from 1982 to 1986 and joined Santos in 1987 until 2000. "The entry fee per club is R2 500 and the entry fee at the gate for players the day of the tournament is R5 for players and children u-18, adults pay R10 and you also pay R10 for your car.Entry fees were R6 000 for the six days with a stall in the Athlone Stadium for free," he says.
