Humans and four-legged friends are invited to strut their stuffatthe eighth annual Paws on thePromenade —adog walk fundraiser by the Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter, Khayelitsha, in partnership with Vondi’s Holistic PetNutrition.

The dog walk is taking place on Sunday 12 April at 09:00. Startingatthe Mouille Point lighthouse, the 5kmroute will extend to the SeaPointswimming pool and back. Shorter turnaround points for old, tired and injured pets (or humans) will alsobeavailable.

“Our 2025 Pawsonthe Promenade was agreat success with an attendance of 295 dogs,” says Marcelle du Plessis, spokespersonand event organiser.

URGENTFUNDINGNEEDED

The Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter is an NPO animal clinic in Khayelitsha servinganaverage of 22 000 animals per year through consultations, hospitalisation, general and orthopaedic surgeries, continuoussterilisations, mobile clinics,ananimal ambulance and homeless pet shelter. “Sadly we recently received the news that our main funder will notberenewing any grants in South Africa next year. This means a loss of R250 000 per month. We need to findreplacementfunding and encourage everyone to join Paws on the Promenade to helpwith this,” says Du Plessis.

COSTUMESANDCREATIVITY

Expect to see dogs of all shapes and sizes. “People get very creative, dressingthemselves andtheir dogs up in costumes,” says Du Plessis. There will be dalmatians in tutus, dachshunds in hot dog outfitsand pomeranians with bow ties.

THE FIRST 100 DOGSWILL RECEIVE AFREEGOODIE BAG

All pet owners are encouraged to dress up in adog outfit or to wear something orange, the Mdzananda Animal Clinic brand colour.

“For the pastseven years Vondi’s has partnered with Mdzananda in making this event possible. It is one of our highlights of the year,” says Cindy Jacobson, manager of Vondi’s Holistic PetNutrition.

The Tygerberg HospiceSunshine Shop has reopened itsdoors at 16 Maree Street, Bellville, following asuccessful renovation made possible through community support.

The iconic shop, which has served as acommunity cornerstonesince 1997,provides essential funding for the hospice’s free palliativecare services to those in need.

“We are thrilled to see the shop looking better than ever,” saidRobinlee Mitchell, community development manager of Tygerberg Hospice. “This renovationis not just afacelift; it’s asymbol of the community’s commitment to our cause. We’reproud to serve the community and provide essential services to those who need it most.”

The renovation has created amore welcoming andaccessible space, featuring improved displays anda wider range of quality second-handitems including clothing, furnitureand household goods.

The City may become the first municipality in South Africa to procure electricity at scale from licenced energy traders and aggregators at below Eskom rates. Anew Energy TraderTender aims to procure 500 MW through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) spanning one to 10 years from avariety of power generation technologies, including solar. According to the City, it spends approximately 70% of its tariff income to buy bulkenergy from Eskom

“As by far the greatest input cost, itis vital to find means to reduce the impactof Eskom on electricitycosts and subsequent consumer tariffs. This is thelatest pioneering step we aretaking to procure clean and affordable energy from the open market and to reduce our reliance on Eskom’s very expensive power,” says Mayco member forEnergy, Xanthea Limberg.

Tender details say one or multiple bidders will be selected as part of apanel, where asecondary process will be followed for submissionoffinancial offers by the panel, subject to operational requirements.

Work order requestswill be sent to the panel, and offers will be ranked from highest to lowest.

Each PPA will be up to 10 years, with the first power delivery to be madeno more than 36 months afterthe signing. Bidders will then provideprices lower than the equivalentEskomTime-of-Use tariff, including all relevant charges.

Only electricity traders registered with the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa), or undergoing registration, shall be admitted to the panel to ensure regulatory compliance.

The tenderer may also notprocure energy or powerfrom the City’sexisting contracts.

Tenderers have until13May to respond.

OnWorld Autism Awareness Day

on Thursday 2April the Western Cape Department of Healthand Wellness encouraged communities to move beyond traditional perceptions of autism and instead celebratethe unique strengths and abilitiesthatautistic children bring to society.

Rather than viewing autism as adeficit, health professionals arepromoting understanding of it as adifferent wayof experiencing and engaging with the world, one that often comes with remarkable abilities including deep insight, creative problem-solving skills, exceptional attention to detail andstrong logical thinking.

“Autism invites us to look beyond traditional expectations of development and to appreciate different ways of thinking,learning and engaging withthe world,” explains Dr Zakira MukuddemSablay, head of adolescent services at Groote Schuur Hospital. “When children aresupported in environments that understand and respect thesedifferences they aremore likely to build confidence andparticipatemeaningfully in their communities.”

AMOTHER'SJOURNEYOFDISCOVERY

ForValerieMaarman, amotherfrom Kuils River, thepath to understanding began with subtle observations abouther sonRobert's responses, playpatterns and sensitivity to his environment.

“At first Ireassured myselfthatevery child developsdifferently,” she recalls. “But deep down, Iknew something was different.”

Easter Sunday usually promises apeaceful morning, chocolatey treats, and perhaps a few family traditions. This year, Idecided to take aleisurely walk along the beach with my three-year-old, expecting to enjoy the cool weather and maybe spotsome earlysigns of spring.What Ididn’t expect was thelittered landscapethat greeted us. Chocolate wrappers, foil fromEaster treats,and colourful plasticpackaging were scatteredacross the sand, remnants of Easter celebrations gone awry. My little one, blissfully unaware of the environmental implications, sawa treasure troveofshiny wrappers and declared it an Easter egg hunt ofhis own. With joy and curiosity, he picked up wrapper after wrapper, giggling at the colourful “finds” along the shoreline. I, on the other hand, was confronted with the stark reality: what should havebeen abeautiful walk along aclean beach had turned into amini clean-up mission. Theirony is striking. Easter chocolates and treats are far from cheapthesedays, yetpeople seem to treat their packaging as disposable. Foil, plastic, and paper wrappers—materials thatcould be recycled or at least disposedofresponsibly —end up scattered across public spaces.

Iamwriting to express my deep frustration at the trafficchaos that unfolded acrossthe city overthe recent Easter weekend. Whilethe holidayperiod is always busy, this year’s gridlock wasnothingshort of alarming.

From theN1 and R300 to smaller arterial roads, drivers facedhours of unnecessarydelays, confusion,and in some cases, dangerous conditions.

It is clearthat the combination of increasedholiday travel,wet weather,and impatientdrivers created aperfect storm. Yet, much of this couldhavebeen mitigated withbetterplanning andcoordination from trafficauthorities. Road users were left stranded in long queues, with emergencyvehicles struggling to navigate congested routes.Instancesofreckless overtaking, speeding, andlane-hoppingadded to the anxiety, putting everyone at risk.

Iwitnessedfirsthandthe sheer frustration of familiestrying to reach their destinations. Parents with young children, elderlypassengers, andeventhose on publictransportwereforcedtoendure long, stressful

delays. It wasparticularlyconcerning to seedrivers ignoringbasic road rules,asthoughtheir personal schedulesjustified putting others in danger

WhileIappreciatethe efforts of ourtrafficofficers androadsafetyteams, it is evident that more proactivemeasuresare needed. Bettertrafficflow management,clearer signage,and timelypublic announcements couldprevent such gridlockinthe future. Furthermore, public education campaigns on safe driving during peak holidayperiods arecrucial

“The sun is your petrol?” Theseare the words of astunned Botswanan man as he gaped open-mouthed at asolar-powered electric bike.

“You don’t need oil, you don’t need petrol,” he says when asked if he would like thebike to be availableinhis country.

“Make aplan, Sir Stephan,” he pleads in episode six of an online documentaryseries titled Recharging Hope.

“Hopefully, we will,” replies Dr Stephan Lacock, aresearcher specialising in electric mobility at Stellenbosch University. Lacock was one of ateam of researchers who drove a groundbreaking 6200-kilometre journeyfrom Kenya to South Africa,using only solar power, creating an online documentary series and breaking an unofficial world recordalong the way.The Kenyan-manufactured Roam Air motorcycles made the entire trip without asingle breakdown or grid charge.

GREENELECTRICMOBILITY

Long beforethe heftypetrol price increase was on all South African’s minds, Lacock’s journey started when he andProf Marthinus Booysen,director of the Electric MobilityLab at Stellenbosch Universityhad a funny idea.

“I’m specialisinginelectric mobility for thepublic transportation system of subSaharan Africa. We were doing research on taxis and Ipresented my work in Kenya. Imet a company called Roam. Theyare thelargest electric motorcycle manufacturer on the African continent. And Iwas absolutely blown away with what they’re

doing and thought to myself, ‘why aren’t we doing this in South Africa?’” Lacock said. “I came back and we started forming aresearch agreement withRoam.”

Roam donated twoRoam Air bikes, to the university for its research but the teamhit a snag trying toget them to South Africa

“It gotdown to apointwhere we just couldn’tshipthe bikes to South Africa. It was very difficult,” Lacock said. “Wewere sitting in awimpy in Pretoria oneday,he (Booysen) said, ‘there has to be away’ andI toldhim,‘Well, thereisthis onecrazy idea andit’stodrive down the motorcycles. He just started laughing andIstarted laughing and in amonth’stime we basically organised the entire trip.”

Once underwaythe project took on newproportions

Booysensaid: “While we were doing this, we realised that the project isgiving us an opportunity to demonstrate something that we’ve been talkingabout foravery long time. It gaveusthe opportunity to show that micromobilityin Africa canbeelectric,itcan be localand it canbegreen.”

He adds thatthere are still too manybarriers toSouth Africa embracing greener transport.

“Ithink we have so many barriers and it’s mostly because oflackofpolitical will. We have leaders who are notreally pushing hard enoughfor us to transformour transport sector As youcan seenow with the price of petrol, we arecompletely dependent onthe importsof fuel.”

The designer of thebike, Masa Kituyi, whoalso went alongfor theride,agrees.

“It’s easiertobuy aGerman car andbringittoSouth Africa than it is to buy aKenyan-made motorcycle,” said Kituyi, who is theMicro Mobility Product OwneratRoam.

“That kindofpolicy needs to change,” he says in the documentary.

Booysenadded: “Wehave leaders whoare notreally pushinghard enoughfor us to transform our transport sector.”

He pointedout that while more countries are movingonto greener fuels, South Africa hasn’t followedsuit.

“We onlyproducepetroland dieselvehicles andweexport all

of those, most of thosemarkets are going to dryup. That is approximately 450 000 jobs that are at risk,” he said. “We desperately need to convert to electric very soon to protect those jobs.”

He cited an electric vehicle project 20 yearsago that was killedbypolitical interference and redtape and called for greater African collaboration to overcome shared challenges, criticising borders“drawn by European hands” that separate countries with common problems and solutions.

“Electric mobility in East Africa is actually exploding,” Lacock adds.“They are by far ahead of South Africa. For instance, Roam alone has over 5000 motorcycles on theroad of Nairobi.”

DOCUMENTARY

During theirSouth African leg, the team broke an unofficial world record by covering 1009,6 kilometres in asingle day on an electric motorcycle.

They captured the journey on camera and stitched it into aseven-part documentary to highlight southern Africa’s electric mobility difficulties and the solutions that can exist.

Talented young baseball players from Cape Town are among South Africa’s rising starsheadingtothe world’s largest girls-onlybaseballtournament, but they need R60000 each to makethe trip possible.

Onabile Gxalaba (14) of Khayelitsha Giants andEden Stellenboom (16) of the VOB team in Lansdowne aremembers of the Junior South African team preparing for the Baseball For All Nationals in Chicago, USA this July.

The tournament represents farmore than just acompetition; it’s being described as one of the biggest platforms to put South African women’s baseball on the world map.“South African women’s baseballhas been growing in the last year andcan become one of the most prolific sports,” said Bruce Benjamin, the team’s spokesperson.

SCOUTINGOPPORTUNITIESAWAIT

The Chicago tournament, which coincides with theWBSC Women’s Baseball WorldCup qualifiers,offers the girls arare chancetocompete internationallyatanevent connected to the launchofa women’s equivalent of major-league baseball in theUnited States.

FAMILIESAPPEAL FORSUPPORT FOR NATIONAL JUNIOR BASEBALLERS’ TRIP

The tournament alsopresents potential scouting opportunities, giving players a chance to be spotted by US major-league baseball women’steams

Benjaminsaid South African baseball had“incredible facilities” and“fantastic club ethos”, but desperately neededmore attention andsupport.

“It just needs alot more eyes on it.The opportunity is so immense for themand to put us on the map, andhopefully it kicks back to the country so we can getmore bodies into thegame.”

CONSTANTFUNDRAISINGBURDEN

But for families from Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain, raising the funds presents amajor challenge.

“We are, like,R40 000 short,”said Karen Stellenboom, Eden’smother.

“We went to Uganda in January and needed to raise R22000. So we are platsak (broke). There is no money, we are bled dry.”

Stellenboom described the ongoing strugglefamiliesface to fund their children’s sportingachievements, not to mentionthe opportunities these throwup.

“The problem Ihave is that one’sfamily andfriends are the ones thatmostly help withthe fundraising, butthere’sjustso muchhelp they can give. Coming from Mitchells Plain, where fundraising is very difficult,becausemostpeople live more or lessthe same way. So one feels bad taking theirmoney.”

Both girls have been playing baseball forthree years and credit the sport with teaching them valuable life lessons.

“Baseball has taught me alot because Iget to experience lots of languagesand races and otherpeople as well,” said Onabile, who plays short-stop, secondbase andpitcher for her team.

Eden said thesport hadtaughther “to be patient and trust the process. If you work hard, it will really work out.”

GROWINGSPORTNEEDSSUPPORT

Sally Gxalaba, Onabile’s mother, highlighted the lackofinstitutional support despite the sport’sgrowth. “There is afederation, but we’re not getting any support. So we are looking for anything that can assist baseball so we can grow the sport.”

The challengeextends beyond individual familiestothe broader development of girls’baseball in South Africa, where talented young athletes are emerging despite limitedresources and funding.

Stellenboom made an emotional plea: “We need support from the government. It is so sad. The government doesn’t give thesechildren anything. Shouldn’tthe province give children from communities such as Mitchells Plainfunding if they are to represent it,particularly abroad?” While the team hopes for government support it is, meanwhile, also looking to secure corporate sponsorship to help bridge the funding gap, said Benjamin. .
