Theorganisation cited aprecedent from March 2022, when Godongwana, in cooperation with the minister of mineral resources and energy, announced a temporary reduction in the general fuel levy of R1,50 per litre to provide relief following the Russia-Ukraine conflict. That relief measure was funded through the liquidation of aportion of the country's strategic crude oil reserves, which AfriForum believes would be an appropriate approach to address the current crisis.

He further called for additional police resources, stating that the police must call up and deploy the thousands of trained police reservistsincrime prevention operations with the army.

“It’s time for radical change and actions rather than heart-warming announcements to ease the mind of residentsliving in fear due to violence.”

Rob Bisset,chair of the Tygerberg Cluster Community Police Forum, confirmed the army deployment to Kraaifontein and welcomed it,saying order needs to be restored in areas such as Bloekombos and Wallacedene, where violent crime is constantly rising. “Apart from gangsterism, other major crime elements such as extortion and xenophobia need to be rooted out,”he says.

Cash-in-transit plot thwarted

Ajoint operation between various police units in the Western Cape has resulted in the arrest of five suspects and the recovery of four firearms, including an AK-47, preventing a planned cash-in-transit robbery.

The arrests occurred on Friday 13 Marchfollowing intelligence gathered by the crime intelligence unit about individuals from different provinces who had travelled to the Western Capetoexecutethe robbery. Police had placed the suspects under surveillance since Wednesday, after identifying them in Kraaifontein.

"On Friday, members of the Winelands highway patrol and Maitland flying squad intercepted the suspects' white Toyota Fortuner as they drove towards Paarl CBD. During asearch of the vehicle, officers recovered

one9mm pistolwithout a serialnumber and 14 rounds of ammunition," says Western Cape police spokespersonConst Ndakhe Gwala.

"Acting oninformation that additionalfirearmswere stored at one suspect's residencein Wallacedene, Kraaifontein, police proceeded tothe address where officers discovered two 9mm pistolseach loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition, an AK 47, 79 rounds of rifle ammunition, 25rounds of 9mm ammunition, a mobile telephone, and R8 750 in cash."

The five menaged between 30 and39originatefromMqanduli, Klerksdorp, Rustenburg, Paarl, andWallacedene. They face charges of possessionofa prohibited firearm,unlicensed firearms, and ammunition.

KraaifonteinclericgivenHonoraryDoctorate

Having served vulnerable communities in Cape Town since 2007,the Reverend Tanelle Welff-Dixon has been conferred withan Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters by the Emmanuel Christian University, Bloemfontein, in recognition of her humanitarian and community development work in Kraaifontein.

The doctorate followed an ecclesiasticalevaluation during which apanel assessed her publications, ministry leadership, community initiatives, and societal impact. The processwas supervised by Reverend Dr Ivor Erasmus, the general secretary of the Evangelical Fellowship of Christian Churches SouthAfrica (EFCCSA).

“Thisconferral to Welff-Dixon is historic, marking the first honorary doctorate awarded by the EFCCSA Bible Institute under theauspices of Emmanuel Christian University, establishing aprecedent forrecognising leaders whose work combines scholarship,ethical leadership, and transformative ministry,” saidErasmus.

Welff-Dixon heads the Kraaifontein-based non-profit TWM Foundation, which was established in 2007. The organisationhas become an active platform for humanitarian outreach, faith-based programmes, and community development initiatives. It will

Her ministry reflects adeep commitment to addressing gender-based violence, femicide, domestic violence, abuse against older persons, children, andsubstance abuse,critical socialchallenges affecting many indigent communities. Welff-Dixonspent closetofive years in Lafayette, Louisiana, in the USA, serving at the Progressive BaptistChurch (Southern BaptistConference) under the leadershipofDrLloyd Joiner Junior. During this period she gainedexperience in international community development andfaith-based socialprogrammes, bringing best-practicemodels backto SouthAfrica to strengthen local community initiatives.

In 2025, Reverend Welff-Dixon participated in the G20 Women’s Conference at Parliament and theG20 CivilSociety Summit in Ekurhuleni.

She also engagedwith G20 platformsincluding Women-20 and Interfaith-20, contributing to discussions onfaith collaboration, social justice, and community empowerment

As amilitaryveteran,she used these platformstohighlight the lack of adequate support

and structuredassistanceand advocated for stronger policy attention and improved support systems for military veterans.

These timeless words seem so prescient and ominous in the uncertain times we find ourselves today, in thewakeofthe bloody war in the Middle-East, inflation, the Ukraine invasion, Trump's presidency and Artificial Intelligence (AI) modifying and "streamlining" the way we work. Sadly, the skills more people are developing lately are related to howto "perfect" their AI prompts to visualise aconcept instead of struggling to understand photography or learn an instrument and use critical thinking. Idread the long-term effects on our brain processing power after decadesof relying on producing prompts instead of pondering and solving some of the problems ourselves.

It is often said that each generation assumes they are living in the "end times", while the one preceding it feels that today's youth are "doomed, spoilt, entitled" and frying theirbrains with TikTokand Instagram.

Whether it's thebaby boomers emerging from World War 2, millennials witnessing changes in music, movies and computers reshaping our daily lives.

Today we find Gen-Z caught in the throes of social media, political turmoil between the left and theright andsurviving a pandemic that shackled the world to slow down.

Thus Iremain optimistic that the youth can lead us out of the darkness thatbreeds division, hatred, warfare and deliverus to amoment in time where we canspeak to each other around atable insteadof shouting and justifying our opinions

Amidst the social upheaval of the 60s another inspiring tune by TheBeatles echoed on the airwaves and still soothes to this daywith the simple message which said, "all you need is love".

This simple mantracan healthe world for those who wish to listen and thosewho choose to care.
