t was an extraordinarily special day for Gladys Mostert (84) and her grandson Andy (20) – a day when dreams long cherished finally took flight.
As a young boy, Andy, who hails from Kraaifontein, had two wishes; to become a pilot and to take his beloved Ouma on a flight It was a dream that Gladys, despite her lifelong fear of flying, treasured deeply
Andy’s passion for aviation took root in early childhood As a toddler, he would spend hours playing with toy planes In fact, almost as soon as he began to speak, he declared his ambition to become a pilot, a dream that never wavered as he grew older
“My dad, Pierre, had a passion for aviation and took me to airshows when I was growing up,” Andy recalls “It fascinated me By the time I was 13, a friend from church took me up for a flight While in the air, I got to take the controls for a few minutes and I was hooked ”
On his 16th birthday, Pierre surprised his son with an introductory flying lesson at a local flight school
“From that day onwards, we began to work out how to make it happen,” says Andy “Flight school is very expensive, so we started brainstorming ideas ”
At 18, Andy finally got his chance He began training and earned his private pilot’s licence shortly before Christmas

OUMA’S 84TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED SKY-HIGH OVER WEST COAST
last year Now, he is steadily logging flight hours and pursuing his ambition of becoming a bush pilot
ADREAMTRANSCENDSGENERATION
Throughout his journey, his grandmother remained one of his greatest supporters As a little boy, Andy had solemnly promised her that one day, when he was “grown up”, he would take her flying
“It was my dream, and hers,” he says
“He drew me countless pictures of aeroplanes, which I faithfully stuck to my fridge,” recalls Gladys with a smile “He always told me, ‘One day, Ouma, we’re going to fly’ ”

That long-promised day arrived just after Gladys’s 84th birthday Pierre drove her to the airstrip under the pretense of visiting Andy, who had taken his sister up for a flight “When we got there, Andy walked up to her and said, ‘Come Ouma, today is the day’!” says dad Pierre
“She was a bit nervous,” Andy admits “Right from the start, she told me not to do anything crazy I promised her I’d take it easy

Cape Winelands Airport has received environmental authorisation (EA) from the provincial department of environmental affairs and development planning (DEADP), marking a key step forward in the planned airport expansion.
The authorisation was officially issued last Monday 27 October despite fears of noise pollution, traffic congestion and others The planned expansion of Cape Winelands Airport is expected to be an investment of approximately R8 billion into the economy of the Western Cape, according to a media release by the airport One of the biggest infrastructure projects in the City of Cape Town, it is anticipated to open in 2028
MAJORMILESTONE
This approval marks a major milestone in the progression of the project and authorises the applicant, Capewinelands Aero, to proceed with a phased expansion across 883ha that will transform the existing facility into a major aviation hub complete with terminal buildings, general aviation facilities and extensive supporting infrastructure such as new sewage systems, electricity infrastructure, access roads, stormwater management structures and solar photovoltaic installations
The approval follows an extensive environmental assessment and consultation process undertaken in full compliance with the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA)
The authorisation is the culmination of more than two years of dedicated environmental planning and public participation, including four rounds of public consultation, two open days, and over 40 specialist studies assessing environmental, social, and technical factors With this authorisation now in place, the environmental practitioners have 14 days to formally notify all registered interested and affected parties
“The granting of environmental authorisation is an important validation of the extensive work and consultation that has gone into ensuring this project meets the highest environmental and community standards,” says Deon Cloete, managing director of Cape Winelands Airport
NEXTPHASE
The next phase will focus on developing the detailed plans and implementation measures as stipulated by DEADP before any construction-related activities begin
The Cape Winelands Airport expansion project aims to establish a modern, multipurpose regional airport that enhances connectivity, supports economic growth and unlocks new opportunities for trade, tourism, and industry across the Western Cape, according to the media release
The proposed project entails the expansion of the existing Cape Winelands Airport in a phased development approach

This includes the realignment of the A masterplan perspective by

Cape Town City Council has approved the R61 million sale of prime industrial land in Kraaifontein, marking a significant step towards attracting private investment and creating jobs in the metro.
The 9,23-hectare property, located in Wynland Industrial Park, was sold to the winning bidder following a competitive public auction in May
The site represents the last large Cityowned tract in a high-demand logistics corridor with direct access to the N1 and R300 highways
The sale, which excludes VAT, will see proceeds invested in city-wide service delivery while transferring development responsibility to the private sector
"The Wynland Industrial Park site's strategic positioning made it highly attractive to investors seeking logistics and industrial development opportunities
Its proximity to major transport routes positions it as a key node for business operations requiring efficient distribution networks," stated Mayco member for economic growth, James Vos
The transaction, he says, aligns with the City's broader strategy to unlock economic value from municipal land holdings
TRANSPARENTAUCTIONPROCESS
According to Vos, the property was sold through a live and online public auction administered by High Street Auctions on 29 May this year, ensuring transparency
FCD needs furniture for new building
FCD Skills Centre in Durbanville has recently moved to its news premise at Durbanville Town Centre and is in need of some items to make their new space welcoming and inspiring
The centre is now situated on the top floor of the building previously known as Queen s Corner
The centre had to move in December last year for extensive upgrading of the Durbanville Town Centre, which reopened about two weeks ago
They are specifically looking for outdoor furniture for student break times, a large TV screen for the additional classroom, and indoor and outdoor plants to beautify the new centre
INCREASEDCAPACITY
Over the past year, 440 beneficiaries participated in training, with 85% of graduates becoming economically active, says Jane Gelderman, chief executive officer
The move to the new training centre provides increased capacity and infrastructure to impact more lives, Gelderman says
"The centre can now host up to 50 students at any given time through three spacious training rooms instead of only two previously, offering a positive and welcoming space not only for students but also for staff and volunteers," she says "The new space represents more than just growth in size
“It is a hub of opportunity and hope," Gelderman says

Canal Walk Shopping Centre was abuzz recently as Compact Food Solutions (CFS) launched its “Raise a Life Raise a Nation ” awareness campaign part of a national effort to combat child stunting in South Africa
The event, which ran from Wednesday 29 October to Sunday 2 November, brought families, shoppers, and community members together to learn about the critical role of child nutrition in shaping the country’s future
In a nation celebrated for its generosity and ubuntu, the reality remains stark: one in four South African children is growing up stunted a condition caused by chronic undernutrition that permanently limits growth and brain development
Determined to change that, Jenny Martin, Managing Director of Compact Food Solutions, is leading the charge from her Cape Town base
“When we nourish a child, we fuel a future,” says Martin “We raise healthier, happier children who will one day raise families, communities, and our nation ” UNDERSTANDINGTHECHALLENGE
According to the SADHS 2016/2024 UNICEF report, 29% of South African children under five are stunted often up to 15cm shorter than expected for their age, and with as much as 40% of brain development lost during their first 1 000 days of life
While irreversible, stunting is entirely preventable CFS produces lipid-based nutrient supplements (LNS-MQ) that meet WHO and UNICEF standards and distributes them through accredited NGOs to early childhood centres These small sachets, added to a child’s food, fill vital

“The winds were strong that day – around 60 to 70 km/h – and we certainly felt them as we climbed, but ouma was incredibly brave
“She didn’t scream once; she simply closed her eyes and stayed calm ” “The hardest part,” laughs Gladys, “was clambering very ungracefully into the plane
“I was nervous at first, but once I was settled in and Andy began talking me through everything, I started to relax As we took off, he explained each step It grew quiet, we gathered speed, and then came Andy’s words: ‘Ouma, we’re up in the air’!”
ADAYTOREMEMBER
Andy turned the nose of the Sling 2, powered by its Rotax 912 engine, towards the West Coast For the next hour and a half, they soared along the coastline to Saldanha and back
“I don’t know who was happier – Ouma

“These sachets might look small, but their impact is enormous,” says Martin “They help children grow, learn, and
or me,” says Andy
“Having her in that plane with me was magical It felt incredible to fulfil the promise I made as a child The first thing I wanted to see was Robben Island, and as we flew over the ocean, I reminded Andy a few times that I couldn’t swim,” she chuckles
“Seeing the coastline from such a low altitude was unforgettable ”
For Gladys, it was the birthday surprise of a lifetime
"Scared and all, it was a surprise of a lifetime I’ve only flown once before, on a Boeing, to visit my children in Australia,” she says
“But all said and done, I reveled in it It was hard to believe I’d actually done it, and so did my friends, until they saw the photos
“An hour and a half flew by like minutes,” says Gladys
“I am so very proud of him He’s a brilliant pilot – and yes, I would absolutely do it again, in an instant ”

VOICESFROMCANALWALK
At the Canal Walk activation, shoppers were encouraged to interact with displays, learn about early nutrition, and pledge support through micro-donations The event drew strong community engagement and heartfelt responses
“I had no idea stunting was this widespread,” said Leigh-Anne Jacobs from Durbanville “It’s eye-opening and I’m proud to see a local company taking the lead ”
“As a dad, this really struck a chord,” added Sibusiso Dlamini from Claremont “It reminded me that proper nutrition is not a luxury it’s a basic right ”
Retired nurse Mary Humphreys from Milnerton said: “Seeing people stop, listen, and care gives me hope This is how real change begins with awareness ”
LEADERSHIPWITHPURPOSE
With over 25 years’ experience in pharmaceuticals and consumer healthcare, Martin has always combined business expertise with a deep sense of purpose Under her leadership, CFS has strengthened its local manufacturing footprint and built lasting partnerships with NGOs and community organisations
“As a mother, I’ve seen how nutrition shapes a child’s potential,” she says “As a leader, I know how collective action shapes a nation It’s time to bring those
truths together ” The “Raise a Life Raise a Nation ” campaign will continue beyond National Children’s Day, with CFS planning more community activations in 2025

After more than six decades of serving the northern suburbs community, the iconic M-KEM 24 Hour Pharmacy in Bellville is embarking on an exciting new chapter as UniCare 24/7 Trusted Health, while maintaining its commitment to providing uninterrupted health-care services to local families.
The transition, announced by founder Hylton Mallach, fondly known as Mr M, comes as part of M-KEM’s partnership with Clicks Holdings, established in 2023 For Bellville residents who have relied on the pharmacy’s roundthe-clock services for generations the change represents continuity rather than disruption
“When I first opened the doors of M-KEM in 1964 my dream was simple, to create a pharmacy that puts people first,” reflected Mallach, whose vision has served countless northern suburbs families through medical emergencies, late-night needs and everyday health-care requirements
He no longer serves as the owner of M-KEM as the Clicks Group has been the owner since 2023
The pharmacy made history in the Western Cape when it pioneered 24-hour pharmaceutical services “In 1999 M-KEM became one of the first pharmacies in South Africa to be open 24 hours a day, ensuring care was always available, day or night,” Mallach noted, a service that has
M-KEM IS NOW PART OF CLICKS HOLDINGS
become essential for Bellville and surrounding communities
COMMUNITYCORNERSTONE REMAINSUNCHANGED
For loyal customers concerned about changes to their trusted healthcare provider, Mallach offered reassurance: “What does this mean for me as a customer?
The answer is simple: everything you love about M-KEM stays exactly the same ”
The familiar faces behind the counter, the specialised clinics and the gold-standard service that has made M-KEM a community institution will continue unabated
The pharmacy’s location in Bellville remains the same as is the round-the-clock availability that has made it a lifeline for emergency medications and urgent healthcare needs continues without interruption
“Today I am honoured to share some exciting news about our future
“In 2023, M-KEM proudly became part of Clicks Holdings, and with this partnership comes the opportunity to take the very best of M-KEM and expand it further than ever before,”
Mallach explained
The rebranding to UniCare 24/7 Trusted Health represents more than just a name change; it signals the recognition of a
uniquely successful community pharmacy model that is now set to benefit other South African communities
The M-KEM approach, characterised by treating health care as personal rather than transactional, has proven so successful in Bellville that it will now serve as the template for a new network of communityfocused pharmacies nationwide
“This transition is not an ending,” Mallach emphasised, "but the continuation of a legacy, one that I am personally proud to endorse "
LOOKINGAHEADWHILE HONOURINGTHEPAST
As Bellville prepares to welcome the UniCare era the community can take pride in knowing its local pharmacy is the gold standard for community health care in South Africa
The model of care developed in the northern suburbs will now extend its reach to help other communities across the country
For Bellville residents the message is clear: while the name above the door may change the community-centred care that has defined M-KEM for 60 years continues stronger than ever under the UniCare banner
The pharmacy continues to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at its familiar Bellville location, ensuring the northern suburbs community never goes without essential health-care services

New recycling facility planned for Fisantekraal
A community recycling facility in Fisantekraal is in the pipeline to improve access to recycling facilities and reduce illegal dumping for residents in the area
Fisantekraal is one of the few remaining areas in Cape Town where there is no municipal recycling drop-off point within a 7 km range, according to a media release by the City
The City of Cape Town’s directorate for urban waste management is planning to develop the facility on Erf 1985 in Dullah Omar Street
It is being designed to accept recyclable waste materials such as paper, plastics, glass and metals, as well as garage waste or mixed waste, e-waste and builders rubble
"All efforts have been made to ensure that capacity is sufficient for the community However, on rare occasions drop-offs may be subject to available capacity for certain waste streams," according to the media release
DESIGNFINALISED
This initiative forms part of the City’s ongoing investment in local waste management infrastructure to make responsible waste disposal and recycling more convenient and to divert valuable materials away from landfills
The design of the facility is currently being finalised, with the next step being to submit technical and legal documentation to the City's planning and building development management department
“If all goes according to plan, construction is anticipated to be completed in the 2027/'28 financial year”, according to the media release
The design has already received extensive public input, resulting in changes to the initial proposed design
Residents raised concerns about potential traffic disturbance along Dullah Omar Street, which led to the relocation of the site’s main entrance to Boy Briers Drive
to improve traffic flow and minimise disruption to nearby homes
Additional adjustments were also made to address visual and aesthetic considerations
"The new Fisantekraal facility will provide residents with a safe and convenient location to dispose of recyclable materials responsibly By improving access to recycling services, we’re helping to reduce illegal dumping and extend the life of our landfill sites," said Grant Twigg, Mayco member for urban waste management

BULL FLUGTAG SOARS AGAIN: Fun,laughter and high-flying excitement filled
Embrace analog to balance digital life
Regarding the letter published on 29 October, it appears that the world has moved from physical childhood slavery to mental childhood slavery Meditation tai chi hiking many sports and activities away from computers help solve this problem I am a software developer with 40 years experience I hike I meditate I do tai chi I wear a 40-year-old watch that doesn’t count steps or tell me things I really don’t need to know On my bike, I don t use a headset or bluetooth
I don’t play computer games There are loads of great board games and there is my favourite activity, being able to have an old fashioned discussion without resorting to Google to check things I asked an electrical engineer friend a question the other day He said have you asked Google? I then emailed my
question to an electrical engineering professor I know, who I studied with in 1982, and he referred me to an electronic engineer who can solve the problem
We need to have digital and analog worlds I still have an old motorcycle with an analog speedometer I dislike these new digital speedometers which my car has, and which give one zero “distance”, zero reference point I live in Milnerton If people can get groups of 10 or more people (scholars included) together, I am willing to run weekly meditation and tai chi classes
People can email me (david@mypowerstation biz) WhatsApp notifications are switched off on my phone as they distract me too much
My personal view is that these activities increase people s brain power and ability to do more and stay
Weekend events gridlock city
I think it s time to say to the City administration: Wat genoeg is, is genoeg!
There is hardly a weekend going by without some or other huge event Now we just had this "Classic Motor Race” on an extremely busy Kgosana Drive It’s been poorly planned and seriously inconvenienced probably 100 000 residents who use the affected routes to travel between work and home daily The City no doubt made millions, but won't compensate even one of the affected citizens who’s travelling time will have been longer, using more fuel or paying more for taxi fare
If it’s not a marathon, it’s a huge football game in the stadium when thousands come in their cars gridlocking the city centre for hours (Sunday 5 October) I don’t know what the authorities did during the Western Cape in 2010, I wasn’t here, but I read about parking facilities to the east of the city centre and shuttle buses If then, why not now ?
Film crews hanging around everywhere blocking some roads even during the week or there is a fun walk, or the Cape Town Carnival, or beach Pro Volleyball in Camps Bay, as if that suburb isn’t congested enough It’s become almost impossible for large
coaches to drive along Victoria road any time on any day
The cruise ship season is here again when up to a dozen coaches depart from the cruise terminal on the days a ship is docked Driving up and down Kloof Nek road is a nightmare for the drivers, while turning into it coming from the cable way station in Tafelberg road is a lesson in extreme patience
Not to forget about the CTICC, hosting thousands of conference participants regularly, causing traffic along the adjacent roads to creep along at best Cape Town’s traffic control is totally out of sync at any time in the week, the City administration is out of touch with reality and staging such huge events is pleasuring relatively few yet causing thousands of the rate paying citizens much disruption
The time is long overdue when the number of huge events must be kept to a minimum, such as the traditional ones, Tweede Nuwejaar, the Two Oceans and the Argus
Additional ones should be limited to a maximum of maybe one a month, not like now when we have almost one every weekend

ahead of automation which started in 1760 with the first industrial revolution Imagine being able to work with and absorb and do two to 40 times more than you do now Imagine the ability to instantly recall things you learned years or decades ago Imagine learning techniques that allow you to remember things you think you have forgotten All possible Our brains are individually more powerful than every computer on the planet But do we have the user manual to use them efficiently and effectively? Meditation tai chi and other activities help to develop our brains and help to develop our intuition Intuition is knowing things we were never taught I use my intuition to find possible answers which I always research and check

‘Not a mistake’
Your article “Milnerton High parent pleads for mercy on family (TygerBurger 29 October) refers
Where was the “mercy” for the victim of your son’s bullying behaviour?
This is not some alleged activity It was captured on video for all to see!
And to dismiss deliberate behaviour as a “mistake” is ludicrous
A mistake is when you add 2 + 2 and get 5
This deliberate behaviour caused both physical and emotional harm the victim will live with for the rest of his life
While you are scared to leave your house, imagine the horror endured by the victim having to go to school every day and having to face your son's assault, physical or verbal
This is not about you
It’s about the victim, so deal with it like the victim had to deal with being beaten by a gang of cowards and thugs
What will they be getting up to once they leave school?
Jail time is the only appropriate punishment 'NOBULL',Milnerton

Glans Of, as jy verkies, ‘n bordjie verouderde cheddar en ‘n stukkie donker sjokolade
