AKraaifonteinmother died in adevastating house fire last Tuesday evening, the night before her son’s 20th birthday.

Mary Adams (48) was killed when fire ripped through her home in De Nova on Tuesday evening 21 July.

Kraaifontein police arrived at the scene in Old Paarl Road around 22:40 and she was declared dead on the scene by medical personnel. Police have opened an inquestdocket. Her son, Dihanzo Adams, was at work when afriend called to tell him his home was on fire and he setout immediately

Instead of celebrating his 20th birthday the following day he had to identify his mother’s body. Owing to theseverity of the burns he reportedly had to undergo a DNA test for formal identification.

Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwalaconfirmed the incident. The De Nova community has been left reeling fromthe loss.

“So sad, no-one like mama. May God comfort the son; let her soulrest in peace,” Victoria Olunga wroteonsocial media.

It latercame to light that the convicted man had in 2007 entered into aplea agreementwith the NPAregarding the 2005 crime where the Brackenfell woman, then 22, wasdruggedand sexually assaulted.

A38-year-old mother of three told TygerBurger Daniel’s tragicdeath could havebeen prevented, hadher case not

fallen through the cracks of the justice system 18 yearsago.

During an interview with the newspaper in 2023, the woman recounted being at a gathering where the accused had bought her adrink

She recalled little of the evening beyond flashbacks of dizziness and leaning against awall outside before he offered to drive her home. After another friend was dropped off, she remembered nothing until waking the next morning on acouch in his aunt’shouse, her clothes dishevelled and no memory of the night before.

Disoriented, she spent the day trying to piece events together beforeaconcerned friend persuaded her to go to the police. While she was at the police station, the accused arrived to hand himself over and confessed. He was arrested and released on bail the following Monday. Thecase dragged on for more than two years. In 2007, while pregnant with her first son, she was summoned by the prosecutor. The accused’s lawyer warned her the case would come down to “he says, she says” and that she would be ripped apartin court.

Intimidated, she agreed to withdraw the charges on condition the offence went on his record and he completed a diversion programme for sexual offenders. If he failed to complete the programme, the charges would be reinstated. However, thisnever happened without her knowledge. It later emerged at the bailhearing for Daniel’smurder that the accused had absconded from the programme after only four sessions. Thecase has stirred profound grief far beyond the courtroom walls wherea group called Justice for Daniel Jamneck formed who followed the proceedings, with one simple purpose, to ensurethat his story is never forgotten.

Checkers Sixty60delivery drivers face agrowing security risk as driversare bearing the brunt of brazen criminal attacks,withtwo separate incidentslast week.

In Brackenfell, aSixty60 driver was hijacked outsideahome in Protea Heights on Monday evening, aweek ago. The incident occurred around 20:00 on the corner of Keurboom andMimosa street.Surveillance footage seen by TygerBurger shows the driver stopping near the front door and dismounting. Moments later, acar with four men inside pulls up alongside him. Three men jump out, force the driver to his knees, and one rides off on the motorbike while the other two flee in the getaway vehicle. It cannot be seen on the footagewhether the suspects were armed.

Van derBijl Street. When officers stopped to offer assistance,the suspect fled on foot. Afoot pursuit followed, andthe suspect was apprehended andescorted back to the motorcycle. Kraaifontein Police Station was notifiedand avehicle identification check confirmed the motorcycle was fitted with atrackingdevice. The suspect and motorcycle were handed over to police for further investigation. The motorcycle’s trackingunit was later recovered at a residence in Fourth Avenue,Belmont Park.

Scottsdene Library is among 17 other libraries in the City sharpening up their coding skills during practise rounds to ensure theyare battle ready for the Coding4Africa Tournament later thisyear.

Coding4Africa is acontinent-wide unplugged coding tournament run by Tangible in partnershipwiththe Leva Foundation. Tangible is an engagement project of Nelson Mandela University’s Computing Sciences Department and the Leva Foundation.

The new short-termletting by-law proposed by the City of Cape Town will affect many property investors who have acquiredhomes and apartments specifically to let them out via Airbnb and other booking platforms —but they should think twice before deciding to sell theseproperties.

That’s the wordfrom Adel and Charl Louw, principals of the Chas Everitt Atlantic Seaboard and City Bowl office, who note that from 1July next year, owners of any property that is let on ashort-termbasis for more than 50% of the total annual room nights available can expect to paycommercial rather than residential property rates.

However, rather than making ahasty decision to sell these properties,they say, investors should know that thereisa compelling opportunity now to pivottowards long-term rentals, whichisasector currently experiencing significant undersupply in Cape Town.

“Thereisachronic shortage of long-term rental stock across themetro, particularly in central areas and along the Atlantic Seaboard,” they note. “Demand is exceptionally strong, vacancy rates are extremely low, and wellpriced,well-located properties are being let very quickly.”

STRONGRENTALMARKET FUNDAMENTALS

The latest statistics show that while rentals in the Western Cape grew by almost 7% in 2025 to average between R11000 and R12 000 per month, thosein central Cape Town range from R13 000 to R15000 per month for one-bedroom units and start at around R19000 for twobedroom apartments, with prime properties in sought-afterareas often achieving significantly higherfigures.

“In addition, vacancy rates aregenerally well below 2%, underscoring the strengthof tenant demand, and rental properties in Cape Town also have good capital growth potential. Property values in the city rose by an average of 9% in 2025, and rental supply continues to lagdemand despite ongoing new development.”

Thenew by-law has been proposed as part of the city’s move to enforce existing policy more consistently and ensure fairness across the accommodation sector, where hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs already pay commercial rates. Under the proposed framework, properties will be classified as commercial if they are not primary residences and are used wholly for short-term letting, or if they are available for short-term letting for more than 50% of their total annual room nights. And while the city has emphasised that it continues to support tourism and does not intend to restrict shorttermletting, the Louws believe the policy shift will naturally rebalance portions of the market.

“Short-term letting will remain aviable and important part of Cape Town’stourism economy, but for many investors, especially thoseoperating at scale, the numbers may increasingly favour long-term rentals, and given the current supply-demand dynamics, that will be avery attractive position to be in.”

SCOTTSDENE SCHOOL FINISHES NINTH AFTER FIRST EVER APPEARANCE AT NETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Defying

Parkdene Primary's under-12 netballteam from Scottsdene defied the odds to finish ninth out of 27 schools in their first-ever appearance at the recent South African Netball Schools Championships held in Mpumalanga

It was the first time the no-fee school has competed at national level.

Theteam, captained by 11-yearold Tashnique Barron, competed against the country's top primary schools at the tournament. Barron has served as captain for five years.

“At just 11 years old, she has shown remarkable leadership, always putting her teammates first,” says assistant coach Dianne Roberts Under the guidance of head coach Anthea Samuels, who has led the team for five years, the girls have grown not only as astute athletes but also as young women.

“Coach Samuels has been more than acoach, she has been amentor, role model, and mother figure to these girls.Her dedication havehelped shape their journey.”

ianne Roberts worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the trip possible, handling fundraising,sponsor coordination andlogistics. Hergoal from the outsetwas that nogirl should miss out becauseoffinancial constraints, andthat every player should have the same opportunity to representher schoolwithpride. Shealso supported the girls on andoff the court, helping build their confidence andencouragingthem to believe in themselves.

Team manager Mary-Anne Kruger played an invaluable role throughout the journey, supporting both players and coaches. Hercommitmentand willingness togothe extra mile helped make the team's dream a reality.

The finalstandings placed Parkdene inthe topthird of competing schools.But for the girls,thisjourney was about much more thannetball.

“It wasabout building confidence, creating opportunities, andshowing these young girls thattheir dreams are possible, regardless of their circumstances,” says Roberts.

KiraVoges competed in the Level 2(9to10years) category

and came 12th out of 23 competitors.

Ava Croustook part in the Level3(8years andyounger) division,finishing14th in afield of 19 participants.

“The Academy of Acrobatsand Dance congratulates Kira, Ava

and Kyraontheir dedication, perseverance and excellent performances,” says dance instructor Zelda Tandy, owner of the Academy of Acrobats and Dance. “Representing the Western Cape at anational championship is asignificant achievement, and the academy is proudofthe commitment and sportsmanship shown by all three athletes,”she says.
