About nine months after four South Africans were lured to Southeast Asia by fake employment opportunities, Western Cape authorities have arrested the two people allegedly responsiblefor recruiting them.
The man and woman aged 51 and 44 were arrested in Kraaifontein on Saturday by the
Hawks’ WesternCapeeconomic protected resources team in connection withatrafficking scheme that lured victims to Cambodia under false pretences.
The arrestsstem from a May 2025 casewherethe four victimswererescued afterbeing recruited and promised work opportunities at acall centre in Thailand.

These jobs were extensively advertised on socialmedia in 2025.
After theirapplications were successful, thevictims were takentoCambodia instead of Thailand upon arrival. Their
passports were confiscated by traffickers and theirfreedom of movement was restricted, according to Hawks spokesperson WO ZinziHani.
“Thevictims were employed in acall centre where they were instructed to make calls to targeted individuals, falsely claiming cases were opened againstthem and demanding
payment to avoid arrest. They were forced to work long hours without payment,” says Hani. “The victims launched aprotest demanding their wages. Three had theirpassports returned, but afourth victim could not retrieve hers. Through interventions by families and NGOs,arrangements were made for the victims to return home.”

Brackenfell High School hasannounced the arrival of shipping containersthat will be converted into astate-of-the-artbroadcast and podcast studio.
The two containers havebeen delivered to the school’s premises lastweek and represent asignificant milestone, which is being made possible through corporate sponsorship.
School spokesperson Reinhardt Hamman says thestudio will provide aunique “living lab” for students in an era where digital literacy is fundamental.
“The facility will address career readiness as the media landscape has shifted. By mastering live streaming, audioengineering, and digital hosting, students gainmarketable skills in production, journalism, and public relations before they graduate,” he says.
“The Brakkies Podcast will give students aplatform to discuss issues that matter to them, while fostering public speaking skills, and providing avoice forthe youth.”
In addition, through high-quality live streaming of sports including rugby, netball, hockey, and athletics, the studio will ensure that parents, andthe broader community, never miss amomentof school life.
The vision is to createaself-sustaining ecosystem of school media, where a

“media squad” of learners will be trained to handle everything from camera operations to post-production editing.
“We want to showcasethe incredible talentand wisdom within our local community,” says Hamman,“by bringing locallegends, teachers, andachievers onto ourpodcasts.”
The project hasreceived support from multiple sponsors. Infra Impact hasprovidedthe primary sponsorship forthe containers themselves, whilst Goscor EarthmovingEquipment and QuickSILVAGroup have contributed heavy machineryfor site preparation work.
Additional support hascome from Fenceman, whichinstalled safety fencing aroundthe upper level to protectcamera operators, and Buzybuy, whichhas sponsoredthe fibre network infrastructure to enable high-quality streaming capabilities.
“This massive leap forward wouldn’t be possible withoutour incredible sponsors,” Hamman added, expressing gratitudetoall contributingcompanies.
The school indicated thatthe project remainsinprogress, with oneoutstanding requirement still to be fulfilled.
“We are still lookingfor apartnertohelp us with astaircase to provide access to the

broadcast studio. If you or your business would like to be part of thislegacy project, pleasereach out to us.”
BrackenfellHigh School is officially steppingintothe forefront of modern media with thelaunchofits dedicated Broadcastand Podcast Studio.

“Ditstrek verder as net uitvoer.

Since 2018 the private higher education sector has grown the most —from 10% to 22% of the market, said Prof Stan du Plessis, chief executive officer of Stadio University during avisit of Durbanville Business to the university campus.
“Thisyear we are going to grow sharply in market share, because of the record large number of matriculants. We have exactly the same spaces available in public universities, so we are going to take amuch bigger share of the market thisyearand indeed every year from now on This is an exciting opportunity for the country, if we do it well.
“It is also an exciting opportunity forthose students that we are giving opportunities for. The reason is not just because of the value of education in your life, but it’s also because we have asociety in which
the return to higher education is uniquely large. The reward youget in the labour market, the impact on your salary for completing higher education, is uniquely largeinSouth Africa. For every year of higher educationthatyou complete, you canexpect your average wage to goup by morethan20%. That’s an astonishingly high return on successful higher education,” DuPlessis said tothe business people of Durbanville.
“The fact thatthe return to school education has gone downbut higher education has gone up over the last 10 years tellsyou that collectively the higher education sectorisnot delivering enoughsufficiently

qualified graduatestothe labour market —especially notwith theright skills. It’s no good to just delivergraduates; we need to deliver graduates with the right skills that you need in your companies,”DuPlessis said.
“Our purpose with Stadio is to build thenation by widening access to qualityhigher education. We have asociety that hasa tremendousneed for quality higher education. It is currently beingunderdelivered and it’s beingdelivered in an inefficient model. Thepurpose of our existenceistodosomething aboutthisand if we getitright, it’s going to make atremendous social impact. In our first five years, we graduated 29 990 students. This year we hope to havemore than 41 000 students in total. We wanttohave more than 60 000 by the end of the decade, because we want to provide opportunitiestoSouth Africans,” he said.
“I haveemphasised the word qualitywhenI speakabout widening accesstoeducation, because it isn’t just aboutgetting studentsintoprogrammes. When we speak about quality, it is all about theoutput. It is aboutthe successrateofour students. We wanttotalk aboutthe quality of theprogrammesfrom an industry perspective.Wewant to talk aboutthe job readiness of our studentsand we want to be directly surveyed from business leaders,” he said. Partofthe Stadio campus arethe brand new engineering facilities. “For thetime we are going to offertwo higher

certificates in engineering and from next year we are going to start degree programmes in engineering, so we are continuously expanding and we look at the market. We askourselves where are the opportunities? Where do we see a need for training and for offering opportunities? Those are the programmes that we’regonna develop,” he said.
On aquestion about financial aid to students,DuPlessis said “the NSFASscheme is catastrophically badly designed, unsustainable and the wrong solutionfor the country”.
“University fees have risen 22% faster than average inflation over a15-year period in which theeconomy is stagnating. We need away to maintain access to higher education and we must do so in away that shares the burden between the state and the student.
“I am not opposed to providing support for those students. I am opposed to the idea that the student has no responsibility at all, which is the current model. The taxpayer —most of whom did not have the opportunitytostudy —is fundinganopportunity for a student who will get an enormous private benefit with no shared responsibility.
“I prefer asystem in which we say that the student own an obligation to the state, collected by our revenue service. We use therevenue service that we already have and we say you are going to pay 1% or 2% extra income tax for 15 years.”

Development Corridor is one of the most dynamic and rapidly growing areas in the Western Cape. We see new businesses emerging, new industries taking shape, new opportunities unfolding every year. We want to be part of thisgrowth—not as apassive observer, but as an active contributor to the economy, to the development of the economy and to job creation and skills enhancement.Higher education today cannot operate in isolation. The traditional model where universities existed in separate academic bubbles no longer serves our studentsorour economy.
“Employers are looking not only for qualifications, but for graduates who are adaptable, innovative, work ready and socially responsible. At Stadio we embrace thisreality. Our programmes are designed in close alignment with industry needs, professional standards and real workplace expectations. This is why memberships with organisations such as Durbanville Business are so vital to us. You play acritical role in shaping the business landscape of thisregion,”hesaid.

I'm absolutely fedupwith the number of dog owners inour area who think it's perfectlyfine to lettheir pets run wild without leads.

Iamfrustrated at the ongoing problems at De Oude Spruit dam, which at times is an absolute nightmare forresidents.
What wasonceapeacefulspot hasturned intoa regularhangout forgroupsofyoung peoplewho seem to have no respect whatsoeverfor the community. They gather theretodrink, smoke, anduse the most appalling language youcan imagine As someonewho's livedherefor over15years, I'm genuinelyworried aboutthis. My elderlyneighbour can'tevenwalkher dog thereanymorebecause she's been verbally abusedfor asking them to keep the noisedown.
We'vecalledthe police, but theyshowuphours laterwhen everyone'salready gone. The council seems equally disinterested in sortingthis mess out. This dam belongs to allofus, notjust abunch of rowdy teenagers who think theyown the place. We need proper enforcement, regular patrols, andperhaps some decent lighting andCCTV to deter this antisocial behaviour.Enoughisenough. Ourcommunitydeserves better.

James Vos, Mayco memberfor economicgrowth, is celebratingwhat he calls along-awaited victory for the city’s connectivityand economy as Airports Company SouthAfrica (ACSA) announcedCape Town International Airport (CTIA) is about to getamajor facelift, to the value of R21,7 billion. Renovations and upgradesatCTIA will begin in March, when the airport will start work on upgrading thedomestic arrivalsterminal.
Some of the other renovations that are expected over the coming years include anew runway, expanded domesticand international terminals, andanupgraded security system.
“I warmly welcome ACSA’s announcement of these upgrades,” Vos said. “This has been aproject close to my heart for years. As part of our push to land more flightsand open new international routes, we’ve been advocating tirelessly for expanded capacity, and now, after all our efforts, Cape Town is hosting 228 international flightsevery week and connected to 31 destinationsworldwide It’s proof that our strategies, fromtourism campaignstocity-to-cityagreements,are working,” Vossaid. “With over 10 million travellers processed in 2024 and cargo volumes up 56%,the upgrades couldn’t come at amore critical time.”

At the University of the Western Cape(UWC), the academic year begins with hope, ambition and the promise of opportunity. Yet for thousands of students, this period is also marked by hunger —areality that threatens learning, academic success and student wellbeing.
UWCsays that between February and April, students are most vulnerable as the they settle into campus life
The university anticipates that about 10 000 students will requirefood support.
It has therefore launched the Feed the Need campaign, acall forassistance to ensurethat hunger does not undermine students’ chances of success
For Gerhard*, afirst-year student from arural village in the Northern Cape, arrivingat UWC represents both hope and uncertainty. His family made significant sacrifices to send him to university, believing that education would open doors not only for him but also for those back home who depend on him. In the first weeks of the academic year, however, the reality of student life set in. Gerhard will have to attend lectures on an empty stomach for days. He dreads sitting in class, struggling to concentrate while hunger sets in.
He is aware that many of his peers are also facing similar experiences.
SUPPORTPROGRAMME
Through UWC’s food support programme, Gerhard will receive asimple but nourishing meal of rice, beans, and vegetables —sufficient to restore his energy. More
thannourishment, themeal affirmsthatheisseen, valued, andthathis presence at the university truly matters.
Stories like Gerhard’sare notisolated. They reflect the lived experience of thousands of UWCstudents navigating the gap between enrolment and financialaid disbursement.
DONATIONS
To meet this need, the university estimates that approximately R7,4 million in foodisrequired to support affected students forabouttwo months. Contributions may take the form of cash donations or non-perishable groceries, allowing the universityto respond flexibly andatscale.
Importantly, allassistance is delivered in adignified and discreet manner, protecting students’privacy andensuring that supportisexperienced as care rather thancharity.
“UWC recognises that hunger carries stigma, and every effort ismadetouphold students’ dignity while meeting theirbasicneeds. The Feed the Need campaign calls on staff, alumni, corporates, philanthropic organisations andmembers of the public to stand withstudents duringthis vulnerable period.
“Foodcollection boxeswill be placed in facultyoffices, atbuilding entrances such as the library andadministrative buildings, at security officesat the main universityentrances, andatother clearly visible and easily accessible points across campus,” reads astatement fromthe university.

Beaches are being littered withdiscarded disposable nappies, raising alarm among environmental groups and community volunteers.
At arecent clean-up at Lagoon Beach in Milnerton, hosted by Save aFishie, volunteers removed 187disposable nappies in just over an hour.
According to organisers this is notanisolated incident, but part of agrowing anddeeply troubling trend across rivers, estuaries and coastalareas.
Environmental advocacy group

Water Quality Awareness said theproblem reflectsa larger failure in waste management and producer accountability.
Product designer Jamii Hamlin described the situationasone of themostdisheartening aspects of modern consumer culture.
“Theconvenienceofa throwawaylifestyle andthe escalation of waste destined for landfill or flushed into the seahas become my greatest disillusionment.”
Sherecalledacoastal clean-up on RobbenIsland in 1999, where 22 000 pieces of rubbish were collected, amoment she described as her environmental “eureka” that shiftedher focus towards sustainable product design
Disposable nappies are made from complex materials, including plastics, elastic, adhesivesand super-absorbent polymers. They do not biodegrade. Instead, theybreak down into microplasticsthat enter marine ecosystems andpotentially the human food chain.
Environmental groups argue that while consumers must disposeofwaste responsibly, thescaleofnappies entering waterways points to systemic issues, from inadequatewaste services to insufficient producer responsibility.

Following the Lagoon Beach clean-up, Save aFishie issued an open letter to major disposable nappy brands calling for stronger action. The organisation is urging manufacturers to:
. Supportregular beach, river and wetland clean-ups.
. Invest in public education campaignsonproper disposal.
. Explore take-back schemes and lower-impact product alternatives.
. Strengthen Extended Producer Responsibility initiatives with measurable outcomes.
“If your logo is on our beaches it’s time your support is too,” theletter states. Founder Zoë Prinsloo emphasised that the
issue was not about blaming parents and caregivers.
“This is about systems that fail people and the environment,” she said. “What leaves our homes doesn’t disappear; it flows downstream.”
Advocates say City leadership is aware of the strain that nonbiodegradable waste places on sewage systems, landfills and biodiversity. But they argue that stronger enforcement, better infrastructure and greater producer accountability are urgently needed. Cape Town has repeatedly been recognised for its natural beauty and biodiversity. However, activists warn that maintaining that reputation requires decisive action.
