CAPE TOWN CARNIVAL COUNTDOWN

JOHN STEENHUISEN PRAAT MET BOERE BLADSY 3

With just over a month to go, organisers say the Cape Town Carnival is on track to light up the Green Point Fan Walk on 21 March with 10 handcrafted floats and a celebration of Cape Town’s creative talent, including 11 local “Champions.” Performers, designers and seamstresses are working around the clock to complete more than 1 000 costumes and prepare a family-friendly show that celebrates diversity and storytelling through art. Pensioners left stranded DESIRÉE RORKE

ixty pensioners were left standing in the pouring rain outside a Kraaifontein community centre last week after Sassa officials failed to arrive for scheduled appointments, forcing elderly applicants who had queued since the early morning hours to wait for hours without assistance.

ELDERLY SENT FROM PILLAR TO POST WITHOUT GETTING ANY HELP

Many elderly applicants had arrived as early as 05:00 to secure their position in line, but by 08:00 there was still no sign of officials to open the facility. Seeing the desperation of the elderly crowd gathered outside, a security guard at the facility eventually opened the doors,

allowing the pensioners to sit in the foyer where they waited in vain for several more hours. A 76-year-old first-time Sassa applicant from Brackenfell, who requested anonymity, described the distressing scene. “I never expected this. It was an eye-opener to see pensioners

enduring this. The rain was pouring down, and those not having cars were forced to wait outside, not dressed for the elements.” She explained how vulnerable pensioners, inadequately clothed for the weather conditions, scrambled to find nearby shelter. “Some crossing the road to find shelter at another building were drenched in water,” she said.
