“During previous engagements, Sassa made commitments that they claimed would alleviate certain pressures. We need to get clarity on rollout of those commitments, especially with the cold winter months just around the corner.
While Sassa is anational entity and does not report to provincial DSD, through regular engagements, the sharing of challenges and data, but importantly the implementation of commitments made, what unfolded on Monday can and should be prevented,” he told TygerBurger. Sassa did not respond to amediainquiry by the time of publication.

The installation of along-promised traffic lightatthe perilous Helling Street and BrackenfellBoulevard intersection has brought immense relief to residentsof Protea Heights and Sonkring, who have waited years for this vitalsafety measure.
After budget was finally made available, work started last week with road lines being painted. Installationisprojected to be completed this week.
This traffic light was requested back in 2017 as traffic increased on Brackenfell Boulevard as aresult of extending the boulevardinbothdirections making it increasingly difficult andeven treacherous to turn right out of HellingStreet in BrackenfellBoulevard. Additionally, vehicles exiting Sonkring faced similar challenges.
Residentscalledthe intersection “the mostfrustratingcross in the Cape”, especially during peak-hour traffic when carsbacked up for several street blocks while waitingtoturn.
Following thehit-and-run incident at theintersection in 2018, in which ayoung girl was knockedoff her scooter,the calls
for the traffic light became moreurgent and City officials revisited the request, noting “the changing traffic patterns in the vicinity”. An investigation followed of which afeedback report was submitted to Subcouncil 2for subsequent approval. “We are pleased with the installation of the traffic lights as the community have been requesting thisfor some time. We hope the traffic light intersectionwill provide the necessary control of traffic and will make it easier and safer for residentsofboth Sonkring and Protea Heights to access Brackenfell Boulevard,” said Ward 8councillor Johann Loots.

JacquesKannemeyer's work emerged as the public favourite among 25 shortlisted artists from afieldof201 competitors representing five continents.The awards were announced on 7February2026 at the Wittockiana Museum in Brussels, where the exhibition continues until8 March 2026
Kannemeyer'swinning entry employed an innovative approach thatmerged artificial intelligence with traditional printmaking techniques. He used AIgenerated images, which were then reworked digitally before being handtransferred to linoleum for carving and printing.

“What interested me was the role reversal,” Kannemeyer explained.

Atotal of 450cattle were vaccinated against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in FisantekraalonSunday as part of amassive drive by the provincial government to safeguard the province’s R13,5 billionlivestock sector, whichemploys thousands of people.
“This vaccination drive is aproactive step to protect cattleinthis area. No cases of FMD have been detected inthis Fisantekraalherd, but we are taking every precaution because we want to protect jobs and livelihoods,” said Western Cape premier Alan Winde in ajoint media release.
The vaccination drive wasoverseen by Winde, as wellasJohn Steenhuisen (national Minister of Agriculture), Dr Ivan Meyer (Western CapeMEC of Agriculture, Economic Developmentand Tourism) and Anton Bredell (Western Cape MECof Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning).
“We will be receiving 200 000 vaccine doses over the coming weeks and will push to vaccinate all high-riskherds. This measure,along with the vaccinations,forms part of the 21-point response plan theWestern Cape Government, together with its partnersin the agriculturalsector, have implemented to containthe nationalFMD outbreak in the province.
The 21-point planincludes:

Steenhuisenadded: “Thisisanational emergency; we are fighting to save the livelihoods of thousands of farmers and thefuture of our agricultural exports. We need every single livestockowner to stand with us.Biosecurity is not asuggestion; it is our only line of defense. If you move animals without permits or ignore basic hygiene, you are putting the entire country at risk.

To protect livestock and the economy, livestock farmers and the public are strongly urged to adhere to thesesimple rules:
. Stop all illegal movements: Never move cattle, sheep, goats, or pigs without a signed healthcertificate and valid permits;
. Limit visitors to your farm: Anyone entering must use disinfectant footbaths and vehicle sprays to ensure they arenot carrying the virus on theirshoes or tyres;
. If you buy new stock, keep them completely separatefrom your main herd for at least 28 days to ensure they arenot carrying hidden diseases;
. If you see animals drooling, limping, or showing sores on theirmouths or feet, call your local state veterinarian immediately; . Ensure fences are in good repairto prevent your animals from mixing with roaming herds or wildlife.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announcedathis 2026 Stateofthe
Nation Address that the R370 monthly Social ReliefofDistress (SRD) grant supportingeight million South Africanswill continue indefinitely with complete employment-focused redesign.
Originally introduced as atemporary measure during the Covid-19 pandemic, the grant has cost R40 billion annually and has been renewed each year sinceits introduction.
In this year'sSona, Ramaphosa confirmed the grant would continue indefinitely and undergo complete redesign.
Thismarks another iteration of promises made at multiple previous Sonas regarding anew income support grant.
"Since it was introduced during Covid-19, the Social Relief of Distress Grant has

"The redesigned grantwill incorporate employment-seeking criteria andlink toskillsprogrammes. This reflects NationalTreasury's desire to tie support to employment andskills development, moving away from previous universal basic income proposals.”
Government terminology hasshifted from "basic income grant" to "income support grant", specifically targetingthe
unemployed rather than all qualifying persons. This represents atrend away from universal income grantconcepts
towards more focused approaches. Ramaphosa previously described the SRD grant as an "essential mechanism for alleviating extreme poverty", despite itstemporary origins. The grant's steep annual cost of R40billion necessitates limiting conditions, as making it universal or increasing itsvalue would exceed the country's fiscal capacity.
Treasury has funded the grant until March 2027 following the latest extension granted in 2025. Whilst no clear continuation signals existed beyond that date, Ramaphosa has now indicated renewals will continue.
Further details about the grant's future are expected in the 2026 Budget Speech, to be delivered by finance minister Enoch Godongwana later thismonth.
