he Cape Winelands Airport is no longer just a plan, it is now a national priority. The development has been awarded a significant status placing it on a fast-tracked regulatory pathway and signalling a significant shift from planning into execution. The development has been formally awarded Strategic Integrated Project status, as designated SIP 17 by Infrastructure South Africa, signed on 4 June. James Vos, Mayco member for economic growth in the City of Cape Town, welcomed the announcement. "This is an important milestone for the project. It places it on a fasttracked regulatory pathway under the Infrastructure Development Act (Act 23 of 2014), with all relevant organs of state requested to prioritise the necessary approvals, licences, authorisations and exemptions," said Vos. MOVE TO EXECUTION The designation recognises the national strategic importance of the development and supports a more coordinated delivery process. Vos noted that construction and financing partners are now in place, signalling a shift from planning into execution. The economic stakes are significant. According to Wesgro's analysis, international air arrivals contribute approximately R24,3 billion annually to

the Western Cape economy, supporting thousands of jobs with spillovers into tourism, trade, and cargo. Vos said aviation remains central to the City's economic growth mission, with a major focus on securing new direct routes into Cape Town. "These routes are not connectivity for its own sake. They directly translate into more visitors, stronger business links, and real economic activity across the city. It adds to the broader aviation ecosystem and strengthens our position as a globally competitive destination." He added that the development reflects strong investor confidence in the region and will play a meaningful role in supporting long-term growth. "I’ve had several engagements with them over time, and what stands out is the depth of aviation and infrastructure expertise, as well as a clear and practical understanding of how to take a project of this scale forward effectively," he says. In the latest developments regarding the airport, the appeals against the Environmental Authorisation (EA) for the development of Cape Winelands Airport, which was granted on 27 October last year, have been dismissed by the

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations. Bredell stated in his decision that he was further satisfied that the key environmental, social, and economic impacts had been adequately identified, assessed, and considered. He added that the public participation process had been adequate in the circumstances, and that no matter material to the environmental decision had been impermissibly deferred.
