The team was led to an open field on the dunes between Monwabisi Beach and Macassar, where one of the accused pointed out a shallow grave where the victim was killed and buried. Civic organisation Action Society is appalled by the news that Marius van der Westhuizen, the former police officer who murdered his three children, is once again trying to get out on parole. On 28 July 2006, he fatally shot his children Marius (8), Antoinette (21 months), and Bianca (16, who was disabled) at their Brackenfell home. The killings were carried out in front of his then-wife, Charlotte, also a police officer at the time during a confrontation. He was convicted in the same year and sentenced to 24 years in prison. "This renewed attempt to regain his freedom is not only a grave insult to justice but also a traumatic reopening of wounds for the children’s mother and a deeply disturbed public still haunted by the brutality of his crimes," Kaylynn Palm, head of Action Society’s Action Centre, said last week when learning of the parole application. "Despite claims of work-related stress and depression, the court found his actions to be deliberate and calculated," says Palm. A MATTER OF MORALITY After serving just 13 years, Van der Westhuizen applied for parole three times. His third attempt was approved in June 2024. The parole board claimed he had "accepted responsibility" and participated in rehabilitation programmes. But following a public outrage, the Correctional Supervision and Parole Review Board stepped in and overturned

Nie net is die omgewing belangrik vir ons wat betref natuurlike hulpbronne soos kos, water, medikasie en boumateriaal nie, maar ook vir ontspanning om aan die besige stadslewe te ontsnap. Elke plant en dier in die ekosisteem maak staat op mekaar en die omgewing in voedselkettings wat soos `n legkaart onvolledig sal wees indien een deel weggeneem word," sê hy. Die reservaat bestaan hoofsaaklik uit Swartlandgraniet-renosterveld en Kaapse Vlakte-sandfynbos, plantegroeisoorte wat oor die algemeen swak bewaar word. Vermeulen sê meer as 300 plantspesies en talle klein diersoorte word in die reservaat gehuisves. "Natuurliefhebbers kan uitkyk vir grysbokke, muishonde, vlakhase en kleinkolmuskeljaatkatte. En as jy mooi kyk, sien jy dalk `n Kaapse dwergverkleurmannetjie of `n rooipensskilpad," sê hy. Ook die voëllewe floreer met spesies soos die blouvalk, swerfvalk, Kaapse fisant, suikerbekkies en muisvoëls. die land in 1901 "Bracken" (varing) "fell" (heuwel) gedoop het. Honderde jare tevore, in die 1700's, was daar `n kanon op die heuwel wat vir militêre doeleindes gebruik is om boere te waarsku. Die kanon is in 1806 vir die laaste keer afgevuur met die Slag van Blaauberg toe die Britte die Kaap vir die tweede keer ingeval het, vertel hy. `n Granietsteengroef is tussen 1950 en die vroeë 1970's op die heuwel bedryf, waarna dit in `n stortingsterrein omgeskep is. Die Bracken-natuurreservaat is in die laat jare 70 as `n kern botaniese terrein geoormerk. Die Vriende van Bracken is in

2006 gestig en in 2013 is `n "sesponder"-kanon aan Bracken deur die Tygerberg-natuurreservaat geskenk vir historiese doeleindes. Aangrensend is Perdekop, 'n 2,2 ha satelliet-natuurreservaat wat deel vorm van die groter reservaat. Teen volgende jaar, sê Vermeulen, sal die nuwe volhoubare ongewingsentrum, waaraan nou gebou word en dan ook sy deure in die reservaat open. "Die sentrum, wat jare al beplan word, sal gebruik word vir byeenkomste om natuurbewaring te bevorder," sê hy. Hy moedig inwoners aan om elk hul deel te doen om die omgewing te bewaar.

Een van die skatte in die Bracken-natuurreservaat is die Kraaifontein-spinnekopbos. Die plant is kritiek bedreig aangesien dit net in die Bracken-natuurreservaat en by ‘n skool in Northpine voorkom. Daarom speel die reservaat ‘n groot rol in die oorlewing van die spesie.

New mobile libraries ignite love for reading I

n a township where dreams often compete with daily hardships, a spark of hope has arrived on wheels. Wallacedene Primary School in Kraaifontein is one of 1 000 schools and NGOs across South Africa to receive a mobile trolley library through AVBOB’s transformative Road to Literacy campaign. More than just a gift of books, this initiative run in partnership with Oxford University Press South Africa (Oupsa) is a lifeline for children who have long been denied access to quality learning resources in their home languages. Packed into the trolleys are 500 carefully selected books to support literacy and numeracy skills in alignment with the CAPS curriculum. The campaign is a nationwide initiative to improve access to books in communities across South Africa. "It addresses the ongoing challenges of low literacy and numeracy levels at foundation phase by providing young learners with culturally and linguistically relevant materials in all 11 official written languages. Other speakers were Adv Phyllis Vorster of AfriForum, who discussed gender-based violence, and Daniel Snyman, an occupational therapist who talked about how to help children with sensory and emotional regulation in difficult situations. "During my years in practice, I've come to understand that divorce is not simply a legal ending. It is a relational rupture that leaves lasting imprints - not just on the separating couple, but on the child, the extended family and even the community around them. It reaches into the classroom, the clinic, the court and even the workplace. And when not handled with care, it can affect the next generation too," she said. According to the latest divorce statistics in South Africa, between 2021 and 2022 there was a 10,9% increase in the number of divorces, rising to 20 196 divorce

orders, according to Bredekamp. "This represents a notable upward shift pointing to the ongoing fragility of marital unions in our country. A significant gender disparity was observed in divorce initiation - 55,8% of divorces were filed by women, while 32,2% were initiated by men. Among the population groups, women of colour had the highest proportion of female plaintiffs, standing at 63,2. In terms of age, the median age at divorce was 46 years for men and 42 years for women. The peak age range for divorce across all population groups was 35 to 49 years for men and 35 to 39 years for women," she said. "This aligns with midlife transitions where family, work and personal strain often converge. In examining marriage duration, 42,2% of divorces occurred within the first 10 years of marriage, highlighting that the early years remain the most vulnerable period for marital dissolution. The impact of children is considerable - 55,3% of divorces involved children under the age of 18, affecting a reported 18 850 children," she said. ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCE "It is an adverse childhood experience contributing to trauma symptoms, hypervigilance, emotional numbing and intrusive memories of parental conflict. During these years, children need consistency and emotional security to form stable attachments with their parents. Young children struggling to make sense of their parents' divorce often internalise blame, develop abandonment fears and later struggle with trust and relational stability," she said. "Children fare best when protected by consistent caregiving, reduced conflict and emotional support. It is not the divorce itself but the surrounding instability, unresolved parental conflict and emotional neglect that cause the long-term harm. Early hearing tests can change lives E

ach year in South Africa, many newborns go untested for hearing loss. The Carel du Toit Centre, located on the grounds of the Tygerberg Hospital in Parow, is working to change this with screening initiatives already making a difference at this hospital. In a statement issued recently, the centre said newborn hearing screening can change the life of a deaf baby. It said babies born deaf can learn to listen and talk just like typically hearing children, if their hearing loss is diagnosed and treated early. This starts with a simple, quick and safe hearing test done shortly after birth, called a newborn hearing screening, the centre said. The centre said testing early matters. HEARING TESTS In South Africa, newborn hearing tests are not routinely carried out at all hospitals and maternity units. However, the Carel du Toit Trust who is the fundraising arm of Carel du Toit Centre where children who are deaf learn to listen and speak, has two dedicated staff members at Tygerberg Hospital who perform these screenings with plans to expand the team, it said. It is important for all parentsto-be to know that your baby’s hearing should be tested soon after birth and if your baby does not pass the test, they should be

Thankfully, he was born at Tygerberg Hospital, where his hearing was tested. At one month old (corrected for prematurity), Bunono did not pass his first hearing test. A follow-up test confirmed he had profound hearing loss in both ears. He received hearing aids at five months old, but because his hearing loss was so severe, the aids were not enough. To help him learn to speak - his family’s biggest hope - Bunono now needed cochlear implants, the centre explained. Dream big and be the agent of your own life In a world shaped by systems one's mindset is the one thing that can set one free, and set one apart. It's not your background, your bank account, or even your education that determines your future; it's the way you think. All these things are useless when the mind is blind. When you dare to think differently, to question what's around you and craft your own path you step into your power. That's what truly separates those who succeed from those who settle. I learnt this early, not from textbooks but from watching people accept the life they never chose. Where I come from in the Boland it's common to see young people finish school only to end up in predictable jobs on farms, in restaurants, behind counters. Honest work, yes, but not always born from dreams. Too often it's just what's available. Just what's handed to you. But what if we didn't accept what's handed to us? At the age of 10 I began dreaming of a life beyond what I saw, beyond my colourful essays. I didn't know where exactly I was going, but I knew I couldn't allow my environment to shrink my imagination. I crafted a universe in my mind, one where I could break cycles, define my own success and live with purpose. Even at this age I do that. Life is by no means easy. Life tests you in subtle and serious ways, through finances, health, limited access, just to name a few. It throws you a general dish, a one-size fits all blanket and tells you to be grateful.

You stop chasing appearances and start building substance. You stop measuring your worth by what you wear, where you live or what you drive and start defining success on your own terms. After all, one of the greatest traps of our time is an obsession with looking successful. What sets you apart, really, is how deeply you think, how courageously you act, and how consistently you build, what you're planting when no-one is watching. That's the difference maker. You know, "be the change you want to see." If there's one thing I want young people (like myself) to take from this Youth Month, it's this: Don't be afraid to be different; it's often your greatest strength. Sopkombuis krap inwoner om Ons wil almal graag diegene wat minderbevoorreg is help, veral in die wintertyd waar ons warm en knus binneshuis is en omstandighede dit nie vir almal toelaat nie. Wat is dan nou lekkerder in die koue weer as 'n warm koppie sop en 'n vars stukkie brood, ek stem, maar ten koste van wie en wat? Dit is vroeg Saterdagoggend en die plaaslike kerk is aan die gang met hul restaurantjie, maar ook dan 'n sopkombuis. By all means, maar: 1. Ek kan nie in of uit die straat om by my eie woning te kom nie, want die motors parkeer al wat 'n oprit is toe. 2. Net waar jy kyk is al wat Jan Rap en sy maters voor my voertuig oor die pad - stappend met 'n koppie sop in die een hand en 'n sny brood in die ander, en

stap kwansuis voor my in. Ek kry vuil kyke asof ek iets verkeerd doen, amper waai sop en brood! Nou moet ek vinnig die hek toekry agter my, want so lok ons hulle in ons "veilige" area. Waarom nie na hulle area gaan en dit daar gaan uitdeel nie? 3. Die ding wat my die horriepieps gee en laat uiting gee hieraan, is hoe die hele straat waar die kerk is - tot ver, amper in Voortrekkerweg - jy net wit foamolite koppies die wêreld vol sien lê. Dit lyk soos 'n kombers voor ons erf; ons hele skoon tuin alles daarmee heen. So, ek moet nou agter hulle die gemors ook gaan skoonmaak en gaste oorkry wat dink, "Joh, hoe morsig bly die mense hier!" Who benefits when property prices explode? An absurd budget yes, a home bought in 1990 for R132 000 is now suddenly R4 million worth. Most of us could afford a home of R130 000 in 1990 but not a home of R4 million today. In the meantime most became pensioners too, and some with zero pension. So what have gone up in the last 30 years of bond period? Building, material and labour cost? So my home still is worth R130 000 because we could afford it, not the property, but the monthly bond payback premiums. Also, are the property marketing companies flairing up the value over the years by comparing property values with replacement cost to earn more sales commissions? The difference between a R130 000 property and a R4 million property monthly bond premiums is way out and for most of us unaffordable! Those fixed tariff benefits can't be legal, because why do pay a monthly property tax? For what? We bought the plots to build, according to the municipal rules and regulations, by the developer or private owner and it's registered on our name, so why the property tax?Is their a binding contract between

home owners and the municipality? Does the contract make room for future additional tarrifs? No, because they think they own us and can do as they feel and get away with it because they think they are every propery owners government. I declare here and publicly that I refuse to pay an extra monthly tariff fee for clean-up. In many property owners's opinion, it's daylight robbery and people are fast asleep (the frog in already boiling water). The City "Masters" must choose: either the property tax go or all the extra tariffs go. I clean my street in front of my paid-up property myself. We are not the waisters. Us property owners are not going to fall for or accept it a communist fools game. We're not here to subsidice the poorly controlled influx of "illegal alien immigrants" or growing squatter camps. That's not our problem. Most of us live on tight budgets and have our own free choice of living standards - surviving on our own leftover savings, not free handouts. Is honde nou slegs vir status? Dit is verstommend hoeveel mense honde aanhou, maar daar word nooit met die diere geloop nie, kry nie eers aandag nie, en mag nie in die huis kom nie. Ek sien daagliks hoe die honde op die koue plaveisel lê en smag na aandag. Wat van die erge koue wat nog kom? Nou vra ek waarvoor 'n hond aanhou of is dit ook status? Rus in vrede, Christa Pligsgetrou en hardwerkend was Christa Cronjé van Parow-Noord haar lewe lank. In die jare sewentig was sy baie lank die saalsekretaresse by Tygerberg-hospitaal se hartsaal A6, waar sy 'n leeftyd se vriende gemaak het. Prof. Helmut Weich was haar hoof. Sy was ook een van die eerste mense wat met prof. Chris Barnard gepraat het nadat hy destyds die wêreld se eerste hart oorgeplant het. Dit was in 1974, toe Barnard direk ná die operasie die hoofkardioloog by die Tygerberg-hospitaal, prof. Helmut Weich, bel met dié groot nuus. Baie lank daarna, toe ek as pasiënt by prof. Weich se privaat praktyk was en hy hoor ons is susters, het hy met groot lof van A6 se mev. Christa Cronje gepraat, met baie groete ook aan haar. Kort daarna is hy oorlede. Nou onlangs met my suster se opname in die Mediclinic Panorama se hoësorgeenheid, het sy seun, ook prof. Helmut Weich, die laaste prosedure op haar uitgevoer. Christa is op 19 Mei oorlede. Sy sou op 9 Julie 90 word. Christa was 'n bekende by die markte in Milnerton, Parow en ook by die oudhedehandelaars daar. Sy was baie gesond, het geen kroniese medikasie gebruik nie, het geen oog- of gehoorprobleme gehad nie, maar het begin ly onder rugpyne, wat haar mobiliteit en kragte verswak het. Cronjé was die ensiklopedie en dagboek van haar hele groot familie ... en 'n staaltjieverteller van formaat! Sy was werklik legendaries in haar kringe. Rus in vrede, Christa! ore van Durbanville boer behoorlik onder die topkore van die ATKV-Applous 2025-kompetisie, wat verlede week bekendgemaak is. Die ATKV-Applous is die oudste skoolkoorkompetisie in Suid-Afrika en vanjaar word die eindstryd van hierdie toonaangewende kompetisie vir die 48ste keer aangebied. Die eindstryd, wat oor vier dae strek, word van 30 Julie tot 2 Augustus in die ZK Matthews-saal by Unisa in Pretoria aangebied. TOPKORE BEKENDGEMAAK 'n Indrukwekkende 292 kore het vanjaar ingeskryf, wat meer as 20 000 hoër- en laerskoolleerders verteenwoordig.

Funds needed for Xmas lunch Outreach Living Hope, a non-profit community organisation in Morningstar, is seeking support and sponsorships for its projects - one of its major needs being gas appliances to prepare food. "Despite ongoing challenges with funding, we have remained steadfast in our mission over the past three years – extending a helping hand to those in need within the Morningstar community and to the homeless in the surrounding Durbanville area. As an organisation we are deeply committed to make a lasting and positive impact in the lives of the needy," says Ellridge van Rath of the organisation. Their vision is to serve as a gateway to improve living conditions and promote sustainable social development within the community. "We aim to achieve this by providing food parcels to people in need, with the long-term goal to establish a soup kitchen that can offer meals on a daily basis. "Currently we are able to distribute food once a week to the needy in Morningstar and once a month to patients at Durbanville Day Hospital. While we are eager to expand our efforts, our ability to do so is limited by budgetary and sponsorship constraints," he says. GROWING DEMAND "The growing demand has made it clear that the need is far greater than our current capacity, and we can no longer fund this initiative alone. External sponsorships and donations are essential for us to continue and grow our impact. Therefore Outreach Living Hope is seeking sponsorships and support of any kind. With additional recourses, we can expand our efforts, reach more people in need and make a meaningful and lasting impact on their lives," he urges. Currently their only external donation comes from Schonette Goosen of Circle of Life Educare in Pinehurst, who has joined the organisation to reach out to communities in need. "One of our major needs is gas appliances to prepare food. We are open and willing to partner with other organisations to share ideas, experiences and strategies to grow our vision. VERSKEIE FINALISTE UIT NOORDELIKE VOORSTEDE Die ATKV-Applous-span, vergesel van ’n afvaardiging van Suid-Afrika se mees kundige en gesaghebbende koorbeoordelaars, het in Mei na 18 bestemmings reg oor Suid-Afrika en Namibië gereis om die topkore te identifiseer. Volgens Renette Bouwer, beoordelaar van die landswye streeksfeeste, verhef ATKV-Applous Suid-Afrikaanse koorsang tot nuwe hoogtes. Sy sê voorts dat ander deelnemers aan internasionale koorkompetisies geïntimideerd is deur Suid-Afrikaanse kore danksy die hoë gehalte van koorsang

wat deur ATKV-Applous aangespoor word. Oudergewoonte is die kore van die laerskole Durbanville, Gene Louw en Eversdal onder die finaliste in die afdeling vir prestige laerskoolkore. Hulle ding vanjaar ook teen die kore van die Laerskool Elarduspark in Pretoria en die Table View Primary School in Kaapstad in dié afdeling mee. Dié eindstryd vind op Donderdag 31 Julie plaas. Die koor van die Laerskool Totius in Bellville is 'n finalis in die merieteafdeling vir Afrikaanse laerskoolkore, wat op Woensdag 30 Julie plaasvind.

PRESTIGE HOËRSKOOLKORE Die meisieskoor van die Hoërskool Stellenberg, ook 'n ou bekende in die eindstryd van dié koorkompetisie, gaan sy slag in die afdeling vir meisieskore in die prestige hoërskole-afdeling teen die kore van die Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool in Pretoria en die Eunice High School in Bloemfontein wys. Die seunskoor van die Hoërskool Tygerberg in Parow het in die merieteafdeling vir hoërskoolkore na die eindstryd deurgedring, maar die koor het intussen aan die kompetisie onttrek. and former Bafana Bafana player, will be at the launch. Crowie played for Lightbody Santos in the Federation Professional League before soccer in SA was united to form the current Premier Soccer League. He was the top scorer in the 1989 Federation Professional League season with 19 goals and helped Santos to finish second in the league. He started his senior soccer career at Glendene United and played for the team from 1982 to 1986 and joined Santos in 1987 until 2000.
