The police's commercial crime investigation unitconducted search and seizure operations on Thursday morning as part of an ongoinginvestigation involving aformer contractor of the City of Cape Town, Triple CMaintenance and Services.
Actingonsearchand seizure warrants, according to police spokesman Col Andrè Traut, investigators executed operations at multiple residentialproperties, as well as aCity of Cape Town office.
"During theoperation, 21 cellular telephonesand nine laptopswere seized for forensic investigation,together with otherpotentialevidential material relevanttothe case," said Traut.
The addresses of three Cityofficials andMayco memberfor finance, Siseko Mbandezi, were searched, as well as that of private individuals linked to the investigation
However, theCity indicated that the Mayorhas not receivedany indication from thepolice that thesearch and seizure relatestowrongdoing of the Mayco member directly, ratherthan ongoing evidence building for the trial of the contractor andothers.

Rex’saunt, Cathleen vander Merwe, echoed thesentiment, saying that while they celebrated the end of the case, it would never heal their wounds.“Iamstill emotional about everything that we had to go through; their families can still go and visit theminjail, butitwon’t bring our child back,” she said.
(NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said thedelays in the casewere inexcusable and notcaused by the State.
“We hope thefamily andthe community will findsolace in knowing that the accused whocaused them unbearable pain will spend avery long time in prison paying aheavy price for the heinous crimestheycommitted,”hesaid.
The National ProsecutingAuthority (NPA) welcomedthe sentence and applauded the investigation and prosecution team who stuck with the caseoverthe number of years despite frustrations caused by the long delays to ensurejusticefor thevictim, her family andthe community thathas supported them over the years.
“The delays in this caseare inexcusable, and it is blatantly obviousthat they were not caused by the State,” NPA spokespersonEric Ntabazalila told TygerBurger.

According to the City of Cape Town, the City manager worked with the police in the sting operation that resulted in the arrest of the owner of the business.
"During the staged encounter, the suspect allegedly handed the City Manager R1,4 million in cash. Thepayment was purportedly offered as abribe in exchange for assistance in retaining the vendor’s contracts with the City," says aCity spokesperson.
Theongoing investigation is being conducted jointly by police and the City of Cape Town’sethics and forensics department.

This case is another demonstration of our never-give-up attitude for justice especially for victims of gender-based violence and femicide. We hope the family and the community will find solace in knowing that the accused who cause them unbearable pain will spend averylong time in prison paying aheavy price for the heinous crimes they committed,”he said.

“Almost seventeen years later, her family remains trapped in acycle of delay and uncertainty, forced to endurerepeated postponements while the men responsible for thisextreme violence continue to avoid final sentencing. Cytheria Rex was murdered after being raped and subjected to asustained and frenzied knife attack. The severityofher injuries reflected alevel of violence that shocked the community and should have placed the case among the highest priorities of the criminal justice system. From pavement soup kitchens to thriving market stalls, community food gardens across the Western Cape are becoming enginesoflocal economic growth.
Western CapeMEC of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, Dr Ivan Meyer, last week lent his support to two Market Day activations in Cape Town —atShoprite Westgate Mall in Mitchells Plain and Checkers Protea Heights in Brackenfell —where community gardeners showcased their produce and sold fresh vegetables directly to the public The Market Day initiative sits at the heart of the Shoprite Group’s Act For Change communityfoodgarden programme,aplatform designed to uplift local growers by opening doors to income generation, while at the same time confronting food security.
During hisvisits, Meyer engaged with community gardeners, commended their efforts, and highlighted theimportance of partnershipsbetween theprivatesector, non-profit organisations, faith-based initiatives, and governmentinaddressing food insecurity.
“These initiatives demonstratehow collaborationcan createmeaningful opportunities for local communities.By supporting community food gardens,we are not only improving food security but also enabling economic participation,” said Meyer.
CHURCHUNDERATREE
One such community food garden is the Jesus in Action (JiA) Our Garden at Brackenfell TrainStation, which is making ameaningful difference inits local community. The garden provides fresh produce while also creating opportunities for skills development and community upliftment forthe homeless people living next to the railway.

The team at OurGardenconsists of volunteer gardeners from the community anda group of homeless people.
On Sunday afternoons, lunches are prepared using produce from the garden and servedtothe homeless after achurch service, while crops from the garden sustained gardeners andwere distributed to beneficiary organisationsand needy families
Our Garden consists of 100 organic vegetable beds amongthe railway lines, anddepending on theseasongrows cultivars such as spinach,cauliflower, cabbage, beetroot, celery, potatoes, spring onions,radish,tomatoesand beans.

Another community garden supported by theprogramme is the NewWorld Foundation (NWF),based in Vrygrond, which plays acritical role in equipping local communities with the knowledge and skills to produceorganically grown vegetables. Through training programmes and hands-on support, NWF empowers community gardeners to adopt sustainable agricultural practices.
EricaJacobs,director at the NewWorld Foundation, said, “Weare committed to
equipping communities with the skills to grow organic, nutritious food in a sustainable way. Programmes like Market Day create real opportunities for our growers to earn an income, while also strengthening food securityand selfreliance within their communities.”
TheMEC interacted with participating gardeners, learning more about their produce that includes fresh vegetables and herbs, and how the combined support from partners such as Shopritehas contributed to household incomes and community resilience.
TheAct For Change programme provides essential support such as training, resources, and access to retail platforms, helping small-scale growers transition intoviable micro-enterprises. Market Day serves as acrucial platform for these gardeners to reach customers and showcase the quality of locally grown produce.
Sanjeev Raghubir, Chief Sustainability Officer at Shoprite, says the Act for Change community food gardens programme currently supports319 gardens countrywide by providing agricultural resources and enabling market access.
“Through initiatives such as Market Day, participants are also exposed to key aspects of commercial retail, including pricing, quality standards, merchandising, customer engagement, volume planning, and operational discipline. This holistic approach helps equip community growers with the skills needed to succeed in formal retail environments.”

Together with the support ofthe broader community, the school raised a remarkable R210 000 in aidofthe National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) and Paarl School itself.
“Casual Day means an incredible amount to Paarl School and our learners with disabilities. For more than 20 years, this initiative has remained one of the school’s most important annual fundraising and awareness campaigns,” saysElizbè van der Colff of the Paarl SchoolDevelopment Foundation (PSDF).
Spearheaded by the NCPD,CasualDay is SouthAfrica's foremost annualfundraising andawareness campaign forpersons with disabilities, held everyyear on the first Friday of September.Itinvites South Africans to dress up or down according to an annual theme and wear an official sticker, bought for all of R20, to show solidarity
The campaign advocates for accessibility, equal rights, and thefull inclusion of the more than 3,3 million South Africans living with disabilities,withproceeds directedtowards special schools and non-profit organisations. Since its launch in 1994, the initiative has raised well over half abillion rand, funding essential services, assistive devices such as wheelchairs and hearing aids, skills development programmes, and accessible housing for those who need it most.

The achievement was recognised at a recent SARChI recognition event hosted by UWC,bringing researchers,academic leaders and institutional partnerstogether to celebratethe collective contributionof the university’s research community
Supported by the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation and administered through the National Research Foundation (NRF),the SARChI programme is one of SouthAfrica’s flagship investments in research excellence.
It aimstoattract and retainleading researchers, expand postgraduate opportunities, strengthen institutional capacity and develop future generations of scientific leadership.
According to UWC the milestone reflects more than institutional growth. It signals the university’s expanding role in shaping South Africa’s research agenda and advancing African-led innovation that responds to pressing societal challenges
The achievement also aligns with the university’s Institutional Operating Plan for 2026–2030, which places research excellence, innovation and international collaboration at the centre of its academic project.
RESEARCHEXCELLENCEANDNATIONALIMPACT
Speaking at the event, UWC Rector and Vice-Chancellor Prof Robert Balfour said the university’s strength laynot only in academic growth andresearch output, but also in itsculture, values and collaboration.
He emphasised that research should extend beyond the university and contribute to societal transformation, creating meaningful change within communities while producing knowledge and opportunity for futuregenerations.
Guests also heard from Dr Nana Boaduo, Director of Research Chairsand Centres of Excellence at the NRF, who reaffirmed the importance of the SARChIprogramme in strengthening South Africa’sresearch system and developing future scholars. He commended UWC for becoming a leading universityinSouth Africa in hosting SARChI Chairsand describedthe institution as amodel from which other universities could learn.
Boaduo highlighted UWC’s contributions across disciplines including publichealth, bioinformatics, education and the social sciences. He noted that research conducted at the university addresses both global scientific questions and localsocietal challenges whilestrengthening policyand healthcare systems.
The programme also featured akeynote reflection from Dr Chance Chagunda, South African Country Manager of the Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative. He praised UWC’sSARChI Chairholders for theircontributions to scholarship,innovation and societal transformation, and highlighted the role of research in addressing challenges such as poverty,inequality, unemployment, climate change and governance issues

ProfMervyn Meyer, Chair in Sustainable Nanotechnology, said theappointment provides greateropportunity for focused research andlong-term development. Eleven widows have turnedgrief intosomething tangible, apublished anthologythat is now on the shelves at ExclusiveBooks at the V&A Waterfront and is making itsway into public libraries across Cape Town.
EchoesofLove: Where Love Once Lived, CourageNow Speaks was written by 11 widows who lost their husbands to Covid-19, cancer, heartfailure, suicide and other causes. It is described as apowerful collection of personal reflections that explore love, loss, healing, and courage “Post-Covid, therehas justbeen a big need for somebody to writeabout loss, love, death and especially grief,” said Rhonda Savage-Julie, one ofthe contributing authors who losther own husband in August 2020 during the first wave of Covid-19
HOWITBEGAN
The project grew from the Sisterhood of Widowhood,asupport community of widows in and around the Western Cape, led by Lezelle Scholtz. She connected with an organisation called DREAMZ, which reaches out to widows and singlemothers. When Scholtz’sown husband died she felt the needtowrite amemoir,and fromthis personal journey her need to reach out to other widows sprang forth.
At the group’s first widows’gathering, held at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Scholtz put out acall to anyone who felt theymay like to write achapteronthe loss of their loved one. Manywomen came forward, butonly amanageable number could be included.
Meetings with apublisher began more than ayear ago. It was initially suggested the book contain 10 chapters, but one participant stepped back during the process while two others came forward, resulting in 11 authors and 11 chapters.
NINEFIRST-TIMEWRITERS
“Of the 11 authors only two had previously written abook,” Savage-Julie pointed out. “The remainingnine had neverput pen to paperbefore, noteven
in ajournal.”Yet allnine succeededin pushing through their anxiety andselfdoubt to share the mostintimatestoriesof theirlives
“They were nervous, anxious andunsure thatthey were worthy of telling astory andputting their story into abook,”saïd Savage-Julie,“and this is whatmakes this book so unique.”
Kinsekeroy Publishers supported every author through the process, holdingtheir hands atevery step.
The widows range in age from their early 50s,having become widows in their 40s. Their husbands diedbetween four and eight years ago. The authors come from allwalksoflife andfrom across the Cape —Athlone, the Cape Flats, the Northern Suburbs, Pinelands, Blackheath andNorthpine.One author, anursing sister whose husband took his own life, currently lives in Durban.

In December 2025 Echoes of Love was launched at avenue in Pinelands to an audience of 200 people, asold-outevent.
The authors havesinceheld intimate coffee events at coffee shops and private gatherings.The book was subsequently stocked at Exclusive Booksatthe V&A Waterfront, where it was prominently displayed on the shelf at the main entrance.
“That, for us,isjust amiracle,” SavageJulie declared, “thatExclusive Books decided tobuy from us andput it on the shelves.”
BRINGINGTHEBOOKTOTHECOMMUNITY
The authors are nowextending their reach topublic libraries. The goal is not only topromotethe book but to encourage libraries topurchasecopies, making it
freelyaccessible to those who cannot affordtobuy it.
The motto of theSisterhood of Widowhood reflectsthe spirit of the project:Wegrieve in community. Nobody has to grieve alone.
Savage-Julie is clearthatthe book speaks to more thanwidows.
“Anybody out there, notnecessarily someone who has lost ahusband, but who has lost achild, apartner, asibling, a parent,alovedone, will find something in this book.Ittalksabout grief. And even though all our stories are different and unique, there is onethread of love, loss, and grief. It is abook for everybody and anybody.
“It is an emotional tool that evokes memories andstories. It is heartbreaking, yetcathartic andhealing, for the writer and the reader.”

With plans to launch in 2027, groundworks on anew premium-grade office park in Brackenfell is set to start within the next few months.
The CapeGate Office Precinct, a50/50 joint venture between Giflo Property Developers and Som Group,will comprise threefive-storey officebuildings and658 parking bays,positioned between the CapeGate Shopping Mall and Builders Warehouse along De Bron Road. The R585 million commercial development, motivated by the suburb's
consistent residential andretail growth over the past decade,isset for completion inmid-to-late2027. Theprojectwas madepossible after shopping mall owner Hyprop Investments Limited granted the twodevelopers exclusive development rights,which is part of theretail property giant's longer-term strategy to strengthen CapeGate's mixed-use profile.
The precinct will feature public courtyards, rooftop terraceswith panoramicviews, structured parking, and pedestrianpathways connecting to nearby shops, restaurants, andamenities.The development hasreceived a4-Star green

Suid-Afrika is nog nie daar nie, wil ek glo. Ons het nog nie diepuntbereikwaar diemeeste mense eerder ’n straatverkoper in ’n ander land gaan wees eerder as omte glo dat dinge in hul eie landgaanverbeter nie.

Cape Town is gearing up to host the world’s top hockey nations after being confirmed as the venue for the 2025–26 FIH Hockey Men’s Nations Cup, taking place from Thursday 11 June, to Saturday 20 June at the Hartleyvale Stadium in Observatory.
The South AfricanHockey Association said in astatement the prestigious tournament forms part of the global competition structure of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and provides the winning nation with the opportunity to be promoted to the 2026–27 FIH Hockey Pro League, the pinnacle of internationalhockey competition.
The event will feature an outstanding lineup of international teams including South Africa, New Zealand, France, Korea, Japan, Wales, Malaysia, Scotland and Ireland.
Scotland earned their place through promotion viathe FIH Hockey Nations Cup 2, while Ireland enter the tournament following their participation in the 2024–25 FIH Hockey Pro League season.
This will mark the return of the FIH Hockey Nations Cup to South Africa,following the country’s successful hosting of the inaugural edition in Potchefstroomin2022.
