Imagine the joy on achild’s face when they receive acolourful shoeboxfilled withhand-picked treasuresfrom a stranger who cares.
Thisyear, the Santa ShoeboxProject is gearedtochannel such moments ofmagic from loving community members to more than 75 000 children in need.
As the organisation marks its milestone 20th anniversary, the Santa Shoebox Project is officiallyinviting schools and Early Childhood Development centres across South Africa to apply to become beneficiaries of their 2026 campaign.
The project focuses specifically on pre-school, Grade R, Grade 7and Grade 11 learnersatpivotal educationalstages whenchildren need supporttosucceed in the next phase of their education.
Educational facilities in both urbanand rural areas may apply, but priority will be given to rural facilities serving vulnerable children who havenot previously received shoeboxes.

Deb Zelezniak, CEO of theSanta Shoebox Project, said the work remains urgent given thatsix outof10children live below the povertyline in South Africa.
“The G20 Global Inequality Report highlightsastark divide in educational opportunity.While achild from awealthy family hasa one-in-two chance of studying beyond secondary school, those odds drop to one-in-40for boys in poverty and a startling one-in-100 forgirls,” Zelezniak said.
REACHINGCOMMUNITIES
Zelezniak says their work reaches communities acrossSouth Africa. “We’re seeing avery stark chasmofopportunity in SouthAfrica. What is particularly
concerningisthat we have 8,8 million children in rural communities where ECD centres often operate in survival mode withoutbasic infrastructure or educational materials.”
Since its foundingin2006, the Santa Shoebox Project has delivered more than 1,35 million personalised shoeboxes filled with sanitary items, stationery, treats and toys to underprivileged children. The organisation alsouses donor funding to build and refurbish ECDs in rural areas and install reading cornersinschools.
“The shoeboxes provide practical necessitiesmanyfamiliescannot afford, ensuring children feel seen and valued,” says Zelezniak.
“We look forward to partnering with facilitiesthatshare ourcommitment to uplifting South Africa’s youth in 2026. We also invite members of the community in everycorner of SA to join us and volunteer.”

Incomplete applications will not be considered, and no changes can be made once submitted. Applications will open on Tuesday 7April and close on Thursday 23 April with successful applicants to be notified by mid-June via SMS.

Several City swimming pools areclosedfor planned repairs, maintenance and upgrades. These include the Langa pool in Area North. Final timelineswill be communicated as work progresses.

Faced with below-average rainfall and increased water demand during summer, theCity hasbeen doingall it can to reducewater losses from burst pipes andleaks.
The City proactively detects and fixesleaks, replaces waterpipes and manages pressuretominimise water lossesand ensureCapetonians’ water security
Yetpipebursts and water leaksdonot always stick to the City’s schedule. In the second half of 2025, the City respondedto anaverage of 346 pipe bursts permonth. Althoughthe targetedrepairtime is two business days,teams immediately isolate the water supply once aburst is reported, to minimise losses. Most bursts during this periodwereresolvedin less than half the expected turnaroundtime.
In certain instances,repairsdotake longer. This can occur when burstshappen inhigh-risk areas, wherework depends on the availability of Law Enforcement, or whencomplextechnical repairs arerequired.

Anslin Gysman, from Kuils River and aUniversity of the Western Cape human resourcesprofessionalhas become the voice behind the Springboks’ new anthem “TheyDon’t Know What We Know,” transforming a viral AI-generated song into an emotionalanthem for South African rugby. Gysman,a30-year-old singer who grew up in Philippi but residesinKuils River now, works full-time in UWC’spayroll department,was selected by SA Rugby after an audition process that followed the viral success of an AI-created version of the song.
Gysman is awell-known South African singer, songwriter, and radio hostknown for his emotive, faith-based music and soul-stirring performances. Based inCape Town,hehas risen to prominence through The Voice South Africa and his workwith TheVocal Associates. He recently won the “Inspirasie-mens met Kuier” award at the Netwerk24 Smaakmaker-toekennings
“I didn’t even curate an expectation that I’d get the job considering all the incredible people who were invited to audition. Ihad to sing formylife,” Gysman said in an interview withUWC The journey began when content creator Skiwi used artificial intelligence to generate the original version, which gained significant traction online. SA Rugby then invited singers to auditionfor ahuman-performed version.
“I received acall from SA Rugby inviting me to an audition for the song. They shared the link to the AI version, andI fell in love with it immediately,”Gysman explained.
Despite his musical success,Gysman remainscommitted to his academic aspirations. He holds an undergraduate degree in linguistics and multiple

At UWC, colleaguesdescribe him as
quietand reserved. “I’m actually very quiet,” he admits.“Peoplethink what they seeonline is my full personality, but I’m quite shy.”
His role in the university’s HR division focusesonpayroll administration. “My role is to makesure people get paid,” he said simply.

Gysman’s musical journey began in
childhood at church, and he later became afinalist on season three of The Voice SA He is also aradio host, content creator and supportsthe DHL Stormers.
Theanthem project became deeply personal for him during the recording process. “I cried real tearsbecause it felt as if Icould sense the healing and restorative properties of thissong for SouthAfrica,” he said.
“I thought about every boy from the Cape Flats who looks like me and dreams like me, Ithought about every mother who would stop at nothing to see their kids succeed, Isaw my grandmother, who was obsessed with rugby, cheer me on and my late uncle who would quietly stand in the crowd feeling proud of me.”
For Gysman, the anthem represents more than rugby enthusiasm. “The song is abeacon of hope, aheart’sposture and abold declaration of hope for us as a country,” he said.
“I realised what agreat moment it is,not only for me but for SouthAfrica, to have something on the airwaves that people can hold onto as asymbol of resilience that’s incredibly powerful.”
Thesinger, who has performed at rugby fan malls during World Cup seasons, described the opportunity as “the greatest honour to serve my country in this capacity.”
Looking ahead, Gysman plans to continue his academic pursuits whilst developing his music career, with new releases planned alongside his PhD studies.
His advice to aspiring artists reflectshis own journey: “The reward for your labour isn’tovernight. Nothing that is meant for you will miss you. It will locate you when the time is right and elevate you in a season that has been set aside for you.”

Kung Fu team rakesinmedals
The South African Chin WooKung Fu team, led by Shifu Muhammad Junaid (MJ Li)Chafeker, managed to rake in atotal of 13 medals at this year's 21stHong Kong InternationalWushu Championship. The event was held in the Far East from 21 to 23 March. The team, #BlitzFus, won atotal of nine gold medals, andfour silver medals
"Theycame, they saw, they conquered," the team management said in astatement on Wednesday.
MJ Li, aLegend of Kung Fu World Champion and World ActionMartial Arts HallofFame inductee, said the team did South Africa proud finishinginthe top 5out of 22 countries who hadcompeted MJ himselfmanaged to win three gold medals competing in theProfessional AdultDivision. He also claimed the highestscores by any foreignathlete at thechampionship

Nog net vier manlike spelers kon dit regkry —Elias Sunny(toets/ T20), Mustafizur Rahman (toets/eendag),Ben Foakes (toets/eendag) en Lungi Ngidi (toets/T20).
In 'n onderhoud ná die wedstryd het Reyneke laat blyk sy wil net haar deel doenomwedstryde vir haar land te wen. "Ja, ek het nogal gestres",het sy gesê, "maar ek was al voorheen in hierdie situasie."

Kavanagh claims first
Spar Grand Prix win
Tayla Kavanagh delivered astunning performance on Sunday 29 March, earning her first victory in aSpar Grand Prix raceatthe opening leg of thisyear's 10km women's road running series in the Mother City.
Kavanagh,representing Hollywood AthleticsClub, held on to the back of defending series champion Glenrose Xaba (BoxerAthleticsClub) for most of the race before launchingafurious kick to snatch thewin.
The24-year-old athlete completed the contestin31:33, chopping eight seconds off her personal best (31:41) set in Cape Town in Octoberlastyear.

MJ is set to hostthe 4th Africa International Youth Kung Fu Championship in Cape Town on Saturday 25 April andSunday 26 April at the Fairbairn College multipurpose hall in Goodwood

Shewas just 21 seconds outside the national 10km record(31:12) held by Xaba.
Xaba was five seconds off the pace, crossingthe finish line in 31:38, while her BoxerteammateKyla Jacobstook a big stepforward in her comeback to elite competition by taking third place in a careerbest 32:16.
Kavanagh was all smiles after handing Xaba arare defeat andtaking the early lead in the Spar series.
"We had agood battle out there. The race went well and I'm happy to walk away with apersonalbest today," Kavanagh said afterwards.
"I've putina lot of work in training, so I'mreally proud of myself and the team, and I'm very blessed andgrateful to walk away with thewin."
Xaba admitted she hadhoped Kavanagh would help push the pace.
"I thought Tayla would come on board and we couldhelp each other, but she didn't take the lead, so Itried my best to push the pace," Xaba said.
"If shepushedthe pace withme, Ithink we were goingtorun even better times,
but I'm very happy with the result and it shows the standard in SouthAfrica is improving."

Caster Semenya also competed in Sunday's 10km race finishing acredible 12th place in 35:44. "I came to Cape Towntogive my team support and decided to race as well. Iam abig fan of the Spar Grand Prixseries. Firstly, it's awomen's only series which us women love and secondly the series has contributed so much to the promotion and development of women's road running in all age groups. My charges, Glenrose Xaba, Karabo More and Karabo Mailula all must give credit to the Spar Grand Prixseries for theirsuccess."
