Thousandsofjobs areexpected to be created as the Western Cape accelerates delivery of majorinfrastructure projects worth an estimated R131 billion, following ameetingofthe Infrastructure Ministerial Committee (IMC)lastweek.

The IMCmet on Friday 6February with adirective to fast-track priority infrastructure by improving coordination, unlockingpartnerships and ensuring funding is aligned with projects that are ready for construction.

Progresswas reviewed across health, education andcore provincial infrastructure.Inthe healthsector enablement work is continuing on the New Tygerberg CentralHospital publicprivate partnership to ensure the project meetsprocurement requirements.

Planningisalso moving forward on two regional hospitals in the metro, with fundingsecured to continue planning for onefacility, while professional teams have been appointed for the second. In education several projects implemented by the WesternCape Department of Infrastructurewere already under construction. TheManenberg School of Skills was progressing following site handover, while construction of SunningdalePrimary Schoolisunderway to accommodate rapid learner growth. Dal Josaphat Primary School was also advancingasa replacementschool that will significantly expand learner capacity once completed.

Dis'nrol waarvoor sy egter ten volle voorbereiis.

Hartzenberg hetvertel dathaar loopbaan op 1Maart 1986 by die Conradie-hospitaal in Pinelands begin het.

"In 1989 is ek as stafverpleegster opgelei.

Van daar hetmypad my na Bishop Lavis geneem, waar ek vir 19 jaar gewerk het. "Wondversorging was my passie; niemand kondit beter doen nie. Ek was altyd nuuskierig,altyd gretig om meer te leer, en mettertyd het ek besef dat ek verderwou studeer,"vertel sy. Sy het haar studiesin2003 voortgesit "Daardie jaar hetekas'n oorbruggingstudent by die Universiteit van KwaZulu-Natal begin studeer, en in 2005 hetekas‘nprofessionele verpleegster gekwalifiseer. Suster Hartzenberg was my nuwe titel, en ek het dié rol met alles binne my uitgeleef. My pasiënte was my alles," sê sy. Hartzenberg hetdaarnaindie traumeafdeling begin werk.

"Een van die mooiste oomblikke was toe 'n ma geboortegeskenk het aan haar baba, al was onstoe nognie 'n aangewese hospitaal nie. Alleshet daar in die noodkamergebeur. reported that hundreds of public works projects were under construction or nearing completion across health facilities, schools and general infrastructure.

TheIMC also reviewed the province’s Single Integrated Infrastructure Pipeline, which includes 52 priorityprojects valued at approximately R131 billion. These projects span transport, health, education, human settlements,water, energy and catalytic economic infrastructure, and have been prioritised for readiness and accelerated implementation.

Progress was also noted on integrated infrastructure investment initiatives aimed at packaging priority projects for blended finance, private sector participation and development finance support. This work was being reinforced through collaboration with the Water and Energy Council to align bulk water securityand energy resilience projects with broader infrastructure delivery. Provincial Minister of Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers said accelerating delivery requires focus and discipline.

“Acceleration is about discipline and focus,” he said. “It means choosing the right projects, funding them properly and removing the friction that slows delivery. What we are seeing is real progress. Projects are moving through planning, intoconstruction, and towards delivery whereitmatters most.”

“As verpleegster by die Goodwoodkliniek moes ek nie net mediese sorg lewer nie, maar ook sosiale, emosionele en praktiese probleme hanteer,"vertel sy. Baie keer moes sy as bestuurder instaan.

"Die werk was nooit vir my te veel nie. Ek het ingespring waar daar 'n behoefte was. Onshet hard gewerk, maar ook saamgestaan om deur elke dag te kom."

Toedie Covid-19-pandemie tref, was dit een van die moeilikste tye in haar loopbaan. "Die onsekerheid, die vrees, die verliese, maar ons het aangehou. Onshet opgedaag —dag ná dag met moed, geloof en deursettingsvermoë, want ons pasiënte het ons nodig gehad."

Hartzenberg erken dat sy die beroep gaan mis, maar nog meer, haar pasiënte gaan mis. "Party van hulle wil nieeens meer die kliniek besoek nie omdat ek nie meer daar is nie. Hulle bel my steeds elke dag."

Sy meen sy sal altyd 'n verpleegster bly.

"Al tree ek nou af, bly dit my passie. Ek gee steeds sop en kos uit, help mense om hul medikasie te verstaan, doen bloeddruk- en suikertoetse.

"Wanneer 'n mens vir 'n beroep gebore is en deur God geroep word, is ditnooit net 'n werk nie. Ná bykans 40 jaar se diens het ek alles gegee, lewens gered en 'n blywende impak gemaak.

"Nou sien ek uit na my welverdiende rus, my rol as ouma en om uiteindelikdie lewe te geniet," sê Hartzenberg.

Anon-profit company (NPC) that operates acrossSouth Africa hassupported hospital patients spiritually and through counselling for almost 30 years.

HospiVision has, since 2009, supported more than 201 392 peopleacross South Africa, 45 605 of these reached in 2025 alone. Western Capeoperations are headquartered at Tygerberg Hospital in Parow.

HospiVision manages alarge anddiverse team of volunteers who provide spiritual care and emotional support to patients across the hospital’s many wards. It has partnered with the TygerbergPastoral Forum, which the hospital recognises as the official body for spiritual

care. The NPC also serves as a training hub forfuture ministers.

HospiVisionalsoprovides paediatric support,using playbased emotional support,with donations of softtoys, blankets andpuzzles frompartners such as Kenridge Dutch Reformed church.

Tygerberg Hospitalisone of the largest hospitals in the Southern Hemisphere and provides an idealsetting for anintegrated approach thatalso involves spiritualcare,counselling and volunteer training, said Christél Kloppers, marketing manager.

The non-profit also operates at KarlBremer Hospital, where itoffers pastoralsupport and

counselling.

HospiVision alsooffers skillsdevelopmentprogrammes, which include digital-skills, baking and sewingtraining, andasoup kitchen.

The programmes, which131 people completed last year, are currently offeredinGauteng Founded in 1997 by faith-based organisationsand churches in theMoot area of Pretoria to support patients at the Tshwane DistrictHospital (formerly Pretoria Academic Hospital), theNPC was in need of soft toys, blankets and puzzles for paediatric patients andtoiletries such as soap, toothpaste and sanitary products. Road users and businesses have been advised of roadworks currently underway on Giel BassonDrive (M12)

The section between the N1 bridge and Rothschild Boulevard in theMonte Vistaand Kaapzicht areas are being resurfaced, theCity of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate said last week

The work started on Monday 2February and will take placebetween 19:00 and 05:30 to avoid peak traffic times. If allgoes according to plan the project should be complete by Wednesday 19 February, the directoratesays. Onelane, however, will remain open to traffic during thesehours.

Road resurfacing is also being doneonRothschild Boulevard between Giel Basson Drive and theMonte VistaBoulevard Circle.

“Residents and business owners in Monte Vistacan expect some noise while workisunderway over thenext few weeks. Our teams will do their best to complete theroad resurfacing as efficiently as possible. Residents can look forward to the newlyresurfaced Giel Basson Drive and Rothschild Boulevard very soon.

“The City’s road-infrastructure management teams are working hardtoget to as much of this important road-maintenance work while the weather conditions remain favourable for

theseroadworks.

“We ask that the publicremain patient while these projects are under way as we have alimited period during the year in which we can push to complete as much of thiswork as possible,” said Rob Quintas, Mayco member for Urban Mobility.

Irecently found myself in asituation where life hung in the balance. Someone Icared about needed immediate medical attention. In amoment, driven by fear and desperation, we rushed to the nearest hospital,aprivate institution

We had no medical aid. We knew the odds were against us. Still, when death feels close, logic takes aback seat. Walkinginto thereceptionarea, Iexplained that this was amedical emergency.

In that moment, Ibecame acutely aware of an invisibleline that divides peoplein medical crises: those whose medicalaid opensdoors, and those whose suffering must first be assessed against abalance sheet.

The receptionist calmlyexplained thataconsultation with adoctor andanelectrocardiogram, anoninvasive,painless testtomeasure the heart's electrical activity, would cost approximately R10000. This amount, Iwas told,had to be paid upfront,before anyone would even assess thepatient.

We left and went to aprivategeneral practitioner (GP), who then assessed and referred us to astate hospital.

But the divide becomes even clearer in astate hospital. Time stretches endlessly Hours pass while pain deepens. Wards aresoovercrowded that patients lieon floors, bodies against walls and hardened benches.

Here, "non–code red" patients wait more than twelve hours, sometimeslonger, learning thehard waythat urgency is relative when resources are scarce.

Security guards, hardened by constant chaos, enforce order with little patience or compassion, as though authority is the only thing keeping the system from collapse.

This is not astory about individual failure. It is about systemic inequality

In theory, healthcare is ahumanright. In practice, it is aprivilege.One that mirrors our economic divides.

Private hospitals boast efficiency, comfort, and immediacy, but only for those who can afford it

Public hospitals carrythe weight ofthe majority, underfunded and overwhelmed, relying on overworked stafftohold together asystemthat is quietly failing

The most disturbingtruth ishow normalised this has become. We expect state hospitals to be chaotic.Weexcuse the long waits.

We acceptthat suffering will be prolonged if you cannot afford it.

Until we confront the reality that access to timely, dignified medical care depends largely on financial status, these divides will continue to widen.

The sad truth is that in moments of emergencies and desperation, survival in our healthcare system often comes down to what you can afford, not how urgently you need help.

On weekends especially,the crowds become disruptive.Brokenbottles, shouting, public urination,and even defecation have become common. Pavements areoften littered with glass, andmanyshoppers have experienced harassment from intoxicated individuals.

Durbanville already hasseveral bottlestoresin secure shopping centres where loitering andpublic drinking arenot tolerated.
