he community of Bonteheuwel has been urged to come forward with information that can lead to the arrest of suspects who shot an Uber driver on Friday. The driver had responded to a pick-up request in Karree Avenue, Bonteheuwel,
where he was ambushed. On arriving he was robbed at gunpoint and shot, and his vehicle stolen. Fortunately he survived the shooting. Sgt Wesley Twigg said Bishop Lavis police had registered hijacking and attempted-murder cases for investigation

PHD student wins chess tourney B
alancing a PhD in pharmaceutical sciences with competitive chess is no small feat, but try doing so and winning a division in a national chess championship. University of the Western Cape (UWC) PhD student, 25-year-old Harrison Abrahams from Parow, succeeded in achieving exactly that. Harrison won the South African Open Chess Championships Intermediate Section, hosted from 27 June to 5 July 2026, scoring an impressive eight points from nine rounds. The Intermediate Section was fiercely contested, with the top five finishers separated by razor-thin margins. Abrahams secured first place outright, while his four competitors, Kopa Lesetedi, Andile Siyali, Christian Maxwell, and Karl Freeks, rounded out the second through fifth spots after a tense tiebreak.
BALANCE For Abrahams, the victory is a testament to his ability to balance two demanding worlds. While he is known as a formidable chess player who competes regularly, he is also deep into his PhD studies in pharmaceutical sciences, focusing on nanomedicine and tuberculosis treatment. Reflecting on his tournament success, Abrahams described his mindset as calm yet focused. “I had a strategy, but I also reminded myself to enjoy the game. That balance made all the difference. My mindset was simply to play good chess and ensure I was well-rested and focused. I did not try going for tricks and played solidly and I honestly did not expect to win. I kept that fantasy of winning out of my mind completely, and focused on one game at a time. And it all worked out,” he said. “In chess, you calculate different possibilities and evaluate critically what the right plan

I have to question my thought processes and research to ensure they are robust enough to help treat tuberculosis.” CURIOSITY FACTOR Curiosity is another factor in Abrahams’s success: “Chess and nanomedicine both explore new avenues to solve the problems at hand, and being open to new ideas is key to nanomedicine and chess.” When asked about his routine, Abrahams said chess is a way to recharge. But stopping at the campus outdoor chess boards is never a temptation for him. He much prefers his break from the intensity of research, playing online, mostly as a brief 10-minute distraction and connecting with others through chess tournaments. “I started my chess journey when I was about seven years old. My uncle played against me and beat me. He taught me the basics and I remember losing almost every game at first, but I was hooked. That inspired me to improve my chess skills until I could beat him,” he joked. “Later, I played casually in primary and high school, and I, strangely enough, stopped playing chess during the pandemic and restarted it when I returned to UWC for my master’s degree in 2024, this time taking it very seriously.” And just like that, the result becomes clear: a single move can transform the game. Patience, foresight, and adaptability unlock a decisive checkmate.

Kite Festival to brighten the sky The Cape Town International Kite Festival returns for its 32nd year, bringing together thousands of visitors to celebrate hope, resilience and mental health awareness. leinvlei police need the public’s help to track down the killers of two shooters in Eerste River on Tuesday 21 July. According to Captain FC van Wyk, the shooting took place at approximately 08:50 at a premises in Feynenoord Street, Dennemeer. Two men, aged 17 and 18, were shot dead and a 16-year-old injured. “Kleinvlei police have registered two counts of murder and one of attempted murder. Both deceased sustained multiple gunshot wounds to their bodies, and died on the scene as a result of their injuries.

He said the victims were standing at the address when four men walked up and opened fire. “The motive is believed to be gangrelated. Community comes together The Matroosfontein Neighbourhood Watch, together with dedicated community volunteers, pruned trees and cleaned up the pedestrian walkway next to a local school. The project, undertaken with the permission and support of the school, was to improve visibility, enhance safety, and create a cleaner environment. Thurston Cooper, chair of the neighbourhood watch, said the walkway has been the scene of a number of robberies. "Residents walking to work, churchgoers, schoolchildren, and children playing at Wembley Park have all used this route, while suspects have taken advantage of the overgrown vegetation and nearby buses to conceal themselves," said Cooper. He said they also took the opportunity to
commemorate Mandela Day by encouraging members of the community to volunteer. "It was inspiring to see residents come together to give back to their community and make a lasting difference.” He added: "We would like to thank the school management for their cooperation and support. Our sincere appreciation also goes to all the sponsors who generously donated refreshments and equipment, and to every volunteer who gave up their time and energy to make this project a success. The Bishop Lavis Crime Prevention Forum (BLCPF) and the community have expressed disappointment that those arrested for extortion and murder following the killing of a Somali shop keeper in Bonteheuwel just over a week ago, have been released on bail. TygerBurger reported last week on three incidents in which foreign shop owners were targeted by extortionists, and one, known as Umar, was shot and killed. In the latest incident suspects were caught on CCTV cameras shooting at a shopkeeper, after which a woman is seen taking the gun from the shooter. Her image was published online, which led to the arrest of four people.
RUSH TO ARREST Graham Lindhorst of the BLCPF said the community’s disappointment arose from law enforcement, giving hope and a sense of safety to the community by rushing to arrest suspects, only to release them again. “We call on the police to stop rushing to effect arrests and then investigating, but rather to investigate in order to arrest, as it will ensure successful prosecution.
“We are further of the view that the police in the Western Cape are not winning the battle against extortion and crime as a whole, because communities and local businesses do not feel safe at all. The communities and business owners live in fear, for no breakthrough with regard to extortion and crime in general has been made.”
LACK OF TRUST According to Lindhorst one of the most worrying issues was the reluctance of residents to channel information to the police, as they simply do not trust them. “The community fears that the criminals are being given information by the very officials they should trust, and whistleblowers are risking their lives and those of their families. “We call on police management to put measures in place to deal with the concerns of whistle-blowers, which will ultimately result in information about crime being brought forward. This, in turn, will contribute to solving and reducing crime.” The woman who was arrested for taking the gun from the shooter will be back in court on 27 July.

Economy linked to mobility, research finds I
f you live in South Africa, you are likely to develop walking difficulties earlier than someone living in countries such as Canada or Sweden, according to a major international study conducted across 25 countries. Walking ability is widely regarded as one of the most important indicators of healthy ageing, because it enables people to remain independent, maintain social connections, and enjoy a better quality of life. Until now, little has been known about how walking limitations develop across countries at different income levels. In a new study published in The Lancet, researchers found that people living in middle-income countries, including South Africa, and low-income countries lose their mobility earlier, with those in the poorest countries developing walking limitations up to 12 years earlier.
15 YEARS OF RESEARCH UWC researcher Prof Rina Swart, Head of the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition, was among the international team of researchers who contributed to the study. Prof Thandi Puoane from the School of Public Health started the Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology (PURE) research at UWC in 2009. The research followed more than 122 000 adults over more than 15 years and analysed data from the international PURE study, which tracks how modern environments – such as dietary shifts, changes in physical activity, and environmental factors – affect health outcomes, including the development of chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes across income levels in different countries. South Africa has four participating sites: one urban and one rural site in the North West Province, one urban site in Langa, Western Cape, and one rural site in Mount Frere, Eastern Cape. Participants were asked whether they experienced any difficulty with everyday functions such as walking, grasping objects, bending, seeing up close or at a distance, or hearing. Focusing on walking limitations, researchers found that these were highest in low-income countries (Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe), with 3.34 new cases per 100 person-years. This means about three to four people out of every 100 developed a walking limitation each year. This figure was almost twice the rate seen in middle-

High-income countries – such as Canada, Sweden, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia – recorded fewer cases of walking limitations, at approximately 1.31 cases per 100 person-years. China had the lowest incidence, at 0.58 cases per 100 person-years. The study found that lower educational attainment, lower income, hypertension, disabling health events such as stroke, and a greater burden of chronic diseases were all associated with an earlier onset of walking difficulties. In middle- and low-income countries, limited recreational physical activity and poor neighbourhood walkability — such as a lack of pavements, uneven roads, and unsafe environments — were also linked to reduced mobility. By contrast, obesity was the leading contributor to walking difficulties in high-income countries. Many of the same factors that increased the risk of walking limitations also increased the risk of premature death. Researchers estimated that nearly onethird of walking limitations and almost half of premature deaths could potentially be prevented by addressing modifiable risk factors, such as improving education, encouraging physical activity, promoting healthier diets, and better controlling hypertension. They argue that these findings strengthen the case for investing in preventive health measures long before old age. Rather than treating disability and premature death as separate challenges, they suggest integrated strategies promoting healthy lifestyles and better cardiovascular health during mid-life could substantially improve both mobility and survival. “Because walking and other limitations are potentially preventable, targeted global and region-specific strategies can be developed to promote healthy, limitationfree ageing during mid-life and older adulthood,” the researchers concluded.

A
Grade 9 learner from Delft is seeking the public’s help in making her dream of becoming a professional rugby player come true. Naphtali Makengo, a 15-yearold learner at Curro Delft, has recently been selected for the Cape Town All Stars, who are going on a rugby tour to Argentina. Naphtali, who dreams of one day playing professional rugby, says the tour will greatly help her in achieving her goal. “I’m looking forward to experiencing rugby in another country, learning from different players and coaches, and representing my community and South Africa. It will also be my first time travelling overseas and my first time on a plane, so I’m really excited for that. I think the first thing I’ll say when I land is, ‘Alhamdulillah,’ because it will be a dream come true,” says Naphtali. But where does her love for the

I started playing during a difficult time when my parents were separating, and rugby became my escape. It gave me purpose, helped me clear my mind, and taught me discipline, teamwork, and resilience. Ever since then, it’s become a huge part of who I am. I’ve been playing rugby for about three years. I started when I was 12 years old in Grade 6. Since then, I’ve represented my school and different clubs, played in older age groups, and also become a junior rugby referee, which has helped me grow both on and off the field,” she adds. HEROES Given that rugby is such a big part of her life, she does not name a single player as her
biggest hero. “My biggest hero is my mom. She’s worked incredibly hard and has always supported me, even when things have been difficult. In rugby, I also look up to players and referees who lead by example, especially those who stay humble, work hard, and inspire the next generation. “My dream is to become a professional rugby player and represent the Springbok Women’s team. I also want to become an international rugby referee and, outside of rugby, study to become an orthopaedic surgeon so I can continue helping athletes and other people through medicine,” she says. The total cost of the tour is R32 300, excluding flights. “To secure my place on the team, I need to raise R8 000 by the end of July, and then continue fundraising to reach the full amount before the tour. Rotary club calling for wheelchair donations The Rotary Club of Durbanville is calling on the community and local businesses to help provide wheelchairs to those aswho need but cannot afford one, part of its 2026 Wheelchair Drive. The club
is appealing for donations of new or gently used wheelchairs, contributions of spare wheelchairs no longer in use, and connections with suppliers or sponsors. The club presents monthly Bingo nights on the first Thursday of the month
at the Bloemendal trail park from 18:00. The Bingo night in August will be on Thursday 6 August. It will be a fun, relaxed social evening open to the community. A community health day will be
presented on Saturday 1 August in Fisantekraal from 08:30 to 17:00. Free dental and eyecare services, as well as hospice health services, will be provided to Fisantekraal residents who struggle to access healthcare.

Tickets on sale for orchestra concert in Stellenbosch The milestones of the 25th anniversary of the non-profit organisation HearUs and the 40th anniversary of the first cochlear implantation performed in South Africa are being celebrated with a concert by the Heydeburg Symphony Orchestra in September in Stellenbosch. On 29 September 2023, Tygerberg Hospital celebrated its 1 000th cochlear implant recipient, and to date more than 1 020 patients have received cochlear implants through this programme. Keep public transport affordable
Several weeks from now, I will no longer see any of the familiar faces of the strangers I’ve become used to traveling with on the bus. I don’t know a single one of their names but their quirks are so familiar to me now, they feel like friends — albeit friends I know only by sight. Introverts like me are not good at making friends, unlike my mom, God rest her soul, who made a dozen new friends on every bus within minutes of boarding. I, however, prefer to observe from afar. So, I will miss seeing which snappy, colourfully patterned suit one particular fellow commuter always dons. I will miss noticing how the man with the bleach blonde afri bears an odd resemblance to the shepherd in Shaun the Sheep. I will miss the deeply personal and one-sided chatter between one young woman — who doesn’t seem to realise that not everyone in the bus is wearing headphones — and her friend. As of 1 September, I’ll be taking a different bus when our offices move and early this week, the biggest pang hit when the samoosa man boarded. I ate my warm, freshly-fried-at-the-taxi-rank samoosas sadly, knowing there wouldn’t be any on my new commute because there’s no eating allowed on MyCiTi buses.

When MyCiTi rolled out more than a dozen years ago, with strictly enforced rules, one of my colleague’s first questions was: "What about the people that sell things on the bus?" Regular public transport commuters know there are some staples that come with every commute. I grew up on trains where an entire carriage was dedicated to praise and worship. Further down the tracks there would usually be another carriage where a group played klawerjas every day. Taxis have their own form of entertainment. Last week when my car was broken, I took a taxi to some of my stories and was surprised when one elderly driver, whom all the passengers greeted by name, rocked a CD of old-school 90s club classics — a playlist I recognised since it had been in rotation since the last time regularly took a taxi to work in 1998. The travelling-by-bus-quirks on the other hand came with the informal vendors, who walked from bus to bus with a box of snacks, and clever rhyme. "Don’t be shy to buy. Tomorrow you’ll cry because you didn’t buy from the right guy." When MyCiTi launched about a dozen or so years ago, it gleamed and it flew, but it lacked the colourful character of traditional commutes. When the municipality started trumpeting its desire to take over the rail system, I clutched my cheap beaded necklace in alarm. In my decades of journalism, I have noticed one consistent trend: the Cape Town Municipality likes to gentrify. Public transport is how millions of the city’s workers get to their jobs — but not by choice. Most would love to work closer to where they live, but commuting long distances has become such a norm for those who had been condemned to the outskirts of the city that most don’t bat an eye at sitting for four hours on a bus in traffic daily or getting up at 04:00 to catch a train at 05:00 to reach work by 09:00. When the City promised easier commutes with fancy buses and dedicated lanes, most people rejoiced, but only a fraction of regular commuters could afford it in the end. The last time I took a MyCiTi bus, about eight years ago, it was considerably more expensive than Golden Arrow. I don’t know how it compares now but I’ll find out soon. Yes, MyCiTi covers routes previously served only sporadically by taxis — or not at all. Yes, it is convenient, quick and safe — but it also charges accordingly. I’m not saying we don’t want or need safe and efficient public transport, but what we definitely don’t need is having those vital services out of our reach due to their cost. If the City is successful in its bid to take over the metro trains, will the cheapest mode of transport be made unaffordable for those who need it most? I sincerely hope not. - LAUREN O’CONNOR-MAY

En die busse en taxi's raak by die dag meer. Helaas is die rangeerwerf onlangs omhein en lyk dit nou nes 'n skaapkamp in die Karoo. En raai wat? Yes, the experts are quick to point out that El Niño’s grip on the Western Cape’s winter rainfall is weaker than its hold on the summer rainfall regions of the country. Our dams sit at a comfortable 79%. But comfort is a dangerous companion. The same scientists who urge caution also acknowledge uncertainty, and uncertainty, when it comes to water security, is not a luxury Cape Town can afford. Day Zero was not caused by a single dry winter. It was the culmination of years of complacency, ignored warnings and sluggish infrastructure investment. We congratulated ourselves on dodging the bullet in 2018, patted each other on the back for cutting consumption, and then quietly slipped back into old habits. Swimming pools were refilled. Lawns were replanted. Car washes resumed. The brief, beautiful discipline of a city under siege was forgotten as quickly as it was born. An El Niño need not deliver a knockout blow to our water supply. It need only deliver a warmer, drier summer than expected, combined with higher evaporation rates and the inevitable surge in demand that comes with heat. We need to remember what we learned the hard way. Every drop saved today is a drop available tomorrow. Rates path down remains on pause

or homeowners hoping July might bring some relief, the wait goes on. The South African Reserve Bank held rates steady, keeping the repo rate at 7% and prime — the rate that sets most home loan repayments — at 10,50%. According to Craig Mott, national sales manager for the Rawson Property Group, a cut was always a long shot with global conditions in turmoil. “For now, a hold is about the best we could realistically hope for,” he says, “and I think we need to prepare ourselves for that to remain the case through to year-end.” While a hold was certainly not what the market hoped for, Mott says it’s not altogether a bad thing. “What hurts the market isn’t a particular rate, it’s uncertainty,” he explains. “When people don’t know what’s coming, they wait. A steady hand from the Reserve Bank, even at a slightly higher level, gives everyone room to make decisions again.” HIGHER INFLATION According to Leonard Kondowe, national finance manager for the group, the cause of the recent pressure is largely beyond the country’s borders. “Inflation has picked up since the start of the year, largely on fuel and global
“The right home at an affordable repayment beats a perfect interest rate” — Leonard Kondowe pressures rather than anything in the local economy,” he explains. “The Bank moved in May to get ahead of it, and holding now buys time to see whether those pressures ease.” That distinction matters for anyone watching for the next move. Because the pressure is coming from fuel and global tension rather than the local economy, the thing to watch isn’t South African growth or spending — it’s whether those outside forces settle. If fuel softens over the coming months, the door to a cut opens later in the year. FOR BUYERS AND SELLERS For buyers, a stable rate is a chance to plan rather than a reason to pause. Kondowe’s advice hasn’t changed with the cycle: get your finances in order, and don’t gamble on the timing of the next move. “Stress-test your bond at today’s rate, not the rate you’re hoping for,” he says. “If the repayment is comfortable now, you’re in a strong position whatever the bank does next. Prequalification is still the best first step — it tells you exactly where you stand.” Mott adds that waiting for cuts that may be months away is
rarely the win buyers imagine. “The right home at an affordable repayment beats a perfect interest rate on a home you missed,” he says. For sellers, on the other hand, a steady rate environment works in their favour, because buyers who can plan are buyers who commit. The fundamentals still apply: price realistically and present the property well, and a stable market does the rest. The rental market has been one of the steadier corners of property through the rate swings, and Jacqui Savage, national rentals manager for the group, expects that to continue. “Higher borrowing costs tend to keep some would-be buyers renting for longer, and that supports demand,” she says. “We’ve seen rentals stay resilient, particularly in well-connected areas where people want to live and work.” That resilience comes with a caveat. Affordability is under pressure for tenants too, and Savage says careful vetting matters more than ever. “Demand is healthy, but so is the need for diligence,” she notes. “Thorough screening protects both the landlord and the tenant, and it’s the single best way to
avoid problems down the line.” LOOKING AHEAD With July settled, attention turns to whether the bank can begin easing again before the year is out — a question that rests largely on fuel and global conditions. Mott’s view is that the next decision shouldn’t dominate anyone’s thinking.
“A single rate decision is rarely the thing that makes or breaks a property move,” he says. “What matters is buying within your means, in the right place, for the right reasons. Get those right and you can weather whatever the bank decides — this month or any other.” It’s a steadying note on which to enter the second half of the year.
