Messages of condolence streamed in online following the death of newly-appointed principal of Apex High School in EersteRiver, Dillon Seals.
Theschool announced on Saturday that Seals, an awardwinning educator, had died. TygerBurger reported in 2024 on Seals’ being awarded the provincial Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (FET) Award, and he was subsequently named principal of Apex, replacing Renate van derWesthuizen.

He is always keentohelp where he canand is determined to foster alovefor mathematics andcritical thinking in our children.”

Die woede vaninwoners van ’n buurt in Eersterivier oor wekelange kragonderbrekings, het verledeweek oorgekook toe hulle die strate ingevaar en brande gestig het. Diebrande het onder meer verkeer ontwrig. Die kraginPinetree-weg, Rosedale in Eersterivier het op 19 Junie net na middernag afgeslaan en is steeds af. PatwinnLinnert, 'n inwoner wat deur die langdurige kragonderbreking geraak word, sê hulle is al van bakboord na stuurboord gestuur, maar steedsisdaar geen hulp vir hulle nie. "Ons het geen ander keuse gehad as om die strate in te vaar nie. Dis onmenslik om so te lewe," sê sy. Volgens Linnerthet 'n buurman se kragreedsop16Junieafgeslaan, waarna hy verskeie noodoproepe gemaak het, waarvan hy verwysingsnommers het. Die inwoners het genoeg gehad en besluit om Woensdagoggend buitebande in die strateaan die brand te steek David Ockhuis, kliëntediensbestuurder van Eskom, het verlede week in 'n stempos aan die ontevredenes gesê die infrastrukteer,wat bestel moes word, is ontvang en werk sal binnekort afgehandel wees.
Linnert sê hulle aanvaar Ockhuis se antwoord en gee kans dat die werk afgehandel word.Toe TygerBurger Maandag met Linnert gepraat het, was die krag steeds af.

The public’s assistance is being sought in identifyingawoman suspected of assisting ashooter in Bonteheuwel on Friday. Ashopkeeper wasshot, after which the shooter handed the guntothe woman. Theentire attack was captured on the shop’s CCTV cameras in Ironwood Street,. In thevideo, three people can be seen approachingthe spaza shop, pretending to order something.When the shopkeeper turnshis back, aman wearing ascarf around his face takes outagun and fires. Thethree assailants calmly walk away, with theshooter passing the gun to the woman, whose face is clearly visible on screen
This is the third shooting thispast week, after 31-year-old Umar died from gunshot wounds on Tuesday. The shootings havealarmedthe local community, as it appears extortionists are targeting foreignowned shops.

McKenzie says he wants to sincerely thank the residentsofBonteheuwel for sharing information.
“We will keep returning, we will keep investigating, and we will keep applying pressure until thisdisgraceful campaign of extortion against our local spaza shops comes to an end. To those involved in extortion and intimidation, hear thisclearly: Bonteheuwel is not your playground.
“We will not tolerate criminals preying on hardworking business owners for financial gain. We will pursue every lead, we will continue our operations, and we will not stop until thoseresponsible are arrested and held accountable,”says McKenzie.

When ateacher at Bellville South Primary School encouraged Zoë Antonietogive rugby atry in Grade 6, she wasn’tconvinced. Today,the Bellville South teenager is wearing South Africa’s colours after being selected for the country’s inaugural SA SchoolsGirlsrugby team.
The 18-year-old Kasselsvlei ComprehensiveHigh School matric learner received the callup following this year’s u-18 Girls Week in Gqeberha after being added to the squad when another player was forced to withdraw because of injury
For Antonie, the selection is the reward for years of constant pushing and determination to make it.
“I didn’t want to play rugby at first,” she says. “One of my teachers at Bellville South Primary School kept encouraging me to giveita chance. Eventually Idid, and Ireally enjoyed it.”
Although theCovid-19 pandemic interrupted her early introduction to the sport,Zoë wasted little time making her mark once rugby resumed. She earned WesternProvince colours at u-15 Sevens level before progressingthrough the u-16 and u-18 provincial structures.
She previously played for Amazonians Rugby Academy and nowrepresents Up andUnder RugbyAcademy, where she trains four timesa week while balancing the demandsofschool andrugby.
ROCKYROAD
The road to national colours wasnot without disappointment.
Last year,Zoë narrowly missed outonSASchoolsselection.
This year, sheagainbelieved the opportunity hadslipped away when her namewas absent from the initial squad announcement during the u-18 Girls Week. Moments afterthe initial squad announcement, while she was still standing on the field, Antonie received acall that changed everything.Following thewithdrawalofaninjured player, she had been addedtothe SA Schools Girls squad.
“Theyactually called me while Iwas stillonthe field where they announced the names,”she says. “Itwas ahuge relief. One of the coaches told me they knew what Iwas capable of andthatI deserved to be there.”

Comprehensive High School not offering girls’ rugby, Zoë trains four days aweek, splitting her timebetween Up and Under RugbyAcademyonMondays and Wednesdays andDFAcademy on
Tuesdays and Thursdays.
While representing South Africa is adream realised, she has already set her sights on what comesnext.
“I wanttostudy at university, play Varsity Cup rugby, representthe Springbok Womenand eventually play professionally overseas.”
Shesays rugby hasalready opened doors shenever imagined.
“I’vetravelled to places I’ve neverbeenbefore andmet people Iprobably wouldn’t have met if it wasn’t for rugby. It’sgivenme opportunitiesI never expected.”
For her mother, Shirley Antonie, seeingher daughter receive her SA Schools blazer was theculminationofyears of sacrifice.
“For five years Ikeptsaying that if shemade SA Schools in her matric year, Iwanted to be there. To witness that moment was one of the proudestmoments of my life,” she says.

Shirley says supporting Zoë’s rugby dream was never a question.
“Therewere days when she was tiredafter school, but she still hadtogototraining. Ididn’t always have the same support when Iwas younger, so Imade a promise that Iwould always be therefor my children.”

The City's north-eastern Municipal Planning Tribunal pproveda plan tobuild alarge-scaledata centre at theKing David Country Club.
The tribunal approved the application on Tuesday 14 July.
The application, lodged by Equinix, allows for the development oftwo centres at King Air Industria, including asecond facility at 90 Pallotti Road.The consolidated site for the second data centre will measure 15,4605 hectares.
The approval covers the rezoning, subdivisionand consolidation of several erven to create asinglesite
The developer has secured160 MVAof electricity supply. The City will provide an additional 80 MVAtoanew switching station, allowingfor an overallpower transfer ratingof240 MVA.
The City said this would strengthen and expand its 132 kV network inthe area, allowing for more user connections and network redundancy. The new switching station and cable installations will be carried out under aself-build agreement between the City and the landowner, with all construction costs borne by the landowner.
OBJECTORSRAISECONCERNS
The application faced opposition from the Legal Resources Centre (LRC), acting on behalf of the Housing Assembly and Foxglove. It was theonly objection received during the public participation process.
The LRC argued that the applicationwas presentedasa technical amendment but actually introducedhyperscale data centre development without sufficient supporting information.
They raised concerns about water demand, which they said wasnot
quantified despitethe scale of the facilities and Cape Town's context of water scarcity. They also questioned the energydemand andits effectsonthe electricity grid and other users.
