DEAD SARDINES WASH UP ON SHORE Dead sardines line the shore at following the latest mass fish mortality event. Hundreds of dead sardines have been washing up along the Western Cape shoreline. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of pilchard herpesvirus (PHV) in affected fish. However, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment stressed that scientists have not yet established whether the virus itself is responsible for the mass mortality. The public has nevertheless been urged not to collect or consume dead or dying fish and not to feed them to pets.

Western Cape’s unemployment rate holds steady DESIRÉE RORKE

he Western Cape’s unemployment rate has dipped to 19,5% in the second quarter of 2026, down from 19,6% the previous quarter, keeping the province below the 20% mark for over a year. The latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey figures, welcomed by the Western Cape Government, remain well below the national rate and point to steady economic performance despite tough global and national conditions. However, decreases in employment were recorded in Western Cape (48 000), Gauteng (22 000) and North West (15 000), while Mpumalanga (41 000), Eastern Cape (13 000) and Free State (9 000) were provinces that observed the highest increases in employment. It is important to note that decrease in employment means fewer people have active jobs, while a decrease in unemployment means fewer people who want work are without a job. These two metrics track different groups in the Statistics South Africa labor force data and can move independently due to shifts in population and job seeking. Seven out of ten sectors in the province recorded year-on-year gains in employment, driven by the finance (+41 000), trade (+41 000) and agriculture (+26 000) sectors. The provincial labour absorption rate, the share of the working age population that is employment, also grew 1,1 percentage points year-onyear reaching 55,7% compared to 39,6% nationally. The latest QLFS figures also confirm that over the past 10 years, the province’s unemployment rate has consistently remained below the national average. “Every decrease in the unemployment rate is encouraging. It shows that we continue to foster a resilient job creation ecosystem that works for our residents,” Winde stated. “Despite intense head winds, we are still making progress. The Western Cape and its residents have faced an incredibly difficult three months, marked by several weather events that wreaked havoc on infrastructure and the agricultural sector, in particular, which is a major economic driver in the province. “We know we must and can do more to grow our economy. We will push even harder to bring more investment to our province that creates many more jobs.” Western Cape minister of agriculture, economic development and tourism, Dr Ivan Meyer, welcomed the latest figures. “While South Africa lost 68 000 jobs yearon-year, the Western Cape created 91 000 jobs over this period. This achievement reflects the resilience of our economy, the determination of our businesses, and the impact of creating an enabling environment for investment, growth and job creation,” said Meyer. Meyer said the results demonstrate

Our focus remains on attracting investment, supporting businesses, expanding export opportunities, improving the skills pipeline, and building the infrastructure required for sustained economic growth.” NATIONAL OUTLOOK Countrywide the official unemployment rate was 33,6% in the second quarter of this year. According to the latest results, there was an increase of 345 000 in the number of unemployed persons to 8,5 million, while there was a decrease of 16 000 in the number of employed persons to 16,7 million compared with the first quarter. This resulted in an increase of 329 000 (or 1,3%) in the labour force during the same period. The above changes in employment and unemployment resulted in the official unemployment rate (labour underutilisation) increasing by 0,9 of a percentage point from 32,7% in the first quarter of tis year to 33,6% in the second quarter. Discouraged job-seekers decreased by 227 000 to 3,7 million, other available job seekers decreased by 49 000 to 861 000, and unavailable job-seekers decreased by 4 000 to 44 000, resulting in a net decrease of 280 000 to 4,6 million in the potential labour force – persons who were available but not seeking or unavailable but seeking. Those outside the labour force for other reasons increased by 72 000 to 125 million. Persons outside the labour force, which is the total of those in potential labour force and others outside the labour force, decreased by 208 000 to 17,1 million in the second quarter of this year. The number of persons employed in the formal sector and household sector decreased by 41 000 and 9 000 respectively in 2026, and in the informal sector increased by 34 000 over the same period. The increases in industry employment were mainly recorded in trade (70 000), construction (39 000) and finance (11 000). The largest decreases in employment were recorded in community and social service (57 000), mining (26 000), agriculture and manufacturing (15 000 each). The results for the second quarter of 2026 show that the total number of unemployed youth (15-34 years) increased by 264 000 to 5,0 million compared with quarter one of 2026, while employed youth recorded a decrease of 40 000 to 5,6 million. As a result, the youth unemployment rate increased by 1,5 percentage points to 47,4% in the second quarter of 2026.

Inaugural creative festival headed for Melkbos Melkbosstrand will come alive with art, film, music and community events when the inaugural Melkbosstrand ART/FILM Festival takes place from 21 to 27 September. CPUT pulls thorny plan

BRENDEN RUITER n a special sitting of the council of Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) yesterday evening a decision was taken to withdraw a controversial Draft Financial Recovery Plan (FRP) for 2027 so further consultation on it can take place. The sitting followed days of protests against the plan by CPUT students across different campuses. Particular sticking points for them have been a proposed upfront payment of R7 000, which they fear could hinder

future access to tertiary education. Lauren Kansley, CPUT spokesperson, said the council is the highest decisionmaking body of the institution and discussion, where the proposal for a minimum initial payment originated, seen as a prelude to more robust financial planning. “Because the withdrawal has taken place we expect that all protest action cease immediately. It has not seen any major infrastructure damage, but we do need to attend to flooded buildings and broken gates. This can happen only when calm

Delft LEAP officer faces charges after crash BRENDEN RUITER Police confirmed that Delft station arrested a LEAP officer for driving under the influence of alcohol after crashing into a shack. Police spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana says a 31-year-old man was arrested and detained at Delft police station for driving under the influence and reckless driving. This after he crashed a

LEAP vehicle into an informal dwelling in Delft on Wednesday, 12 August 2026. "No injuries were reported,” says Mpendukana. City of Cape Town law enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason confirmed the incident. “Just before 13:00 on Wednesday 12 August, the City's Law Enforcement Department was alerted to an incident

involving an off-duty LEAP officer. Information at hand is that he veered off the road while driving a law enforcement bakkie and collided with an informal structure in Delft. The officer was arrested by the police on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol,” says Dyason. According to Dyason, the matter will be dealt with in line with applicable City disciplinary procedures.

000 for information that could lead to the arrest of the murderers. Delft resident Katy Booysen (pseudonym) told TygerBurger on Monday that she is scared for her three children. "I am too scared to let my children play outside. My youngest will always tell me, 'Mommy, daar skiet hulle al weer' (Mommy, they are shooting again), and then we dive on the floor until the

shooting stops. This is no way to live, but we have nowhere to go," says Booysen. Booysen's neighbour, 76-year-old Koos Newman (pseudonym), says living in Delft is a daily battle. Originally from Mthatha, Eastern Cape, Meje now owns M-Scent Perfumes, affordable fragrances for men and women. She has also expanded her business to include personal-shopping services, gym wear, and hair and skincare products. Alright, you may say, now cut to the chase; where’s the challenge? What’s this so-called disability? Meje lives with epilepsy, a fact that has presented its challenges, yet it doesn’t define her. “I have epilepsy,” she declared, “but, if anything, it has made me stronger, it’s taught me to never give up and has motivated me to work hard and keep growing my business.” As with many other entrepreneurs Meje finds access to capital an ongoing big hurdle. “One of my biggest challenges is not always having enough money to grow my business. I keep working hard, promoting my products and believing in myself. The Hood Youth Development Projects is continuing its efforts to restore dignity, hope, and pride among young people through its 'Dignify the Youth' initiative. On Saturday 15 August, 25 at-risk young people from Uitsig took part in a bicycle ride and received a certificate of participation. The certificates were presented as a symbol of their commitment, involvement, and willingness to take part in positive community activities. BREAKING BOUNDARIES Uitsig faces serious challenges related to crime and gangsterism, with community members often divided by gang territories. These divisions can make it difficult for young people to move freely through their own community. The bicycle ride provided a powerful opportunity for young people to break down those boundaries peacefully. Together, they rode through areas affected by these divisions, demonstrating that young people can reclaim their community through unity, sport, and positive activities. Through 'Dignify the Youth', the young people are provided with programmes, outings, team-building activities, safety

talks, and bicycle rides. These activities are designed to divert young people from crime and negative influences while encouraging responsibility, teamwork, healthy lifestyles, and pride in their environment. MAKING A STATEMENT According to Pastor Adam Alexander, organiser of the event, the bicycle ride was more than just a recreational activity. “It was a statement that young people from different parts of the community can stand together, participate in sport, and create positive alternatives to crime and gangsterism. We want to continue creating opportunities where young people can feel safe, valued, and connected to their community. Our aim is to unite the youth and reclaim our community. When young people come together through sport and positive activities, they can overcome the boundaries that divide us and build a better future together”, says Alexander. Student creates AI for taxis

or 20-year-old University of the Western Cape (UWC) BCom Financial Accounting student, Lesedi Majoe, the idea for a technology business started with a problem close to home: the money collected from his family’s taxis did not always add up. Growing up in a family involved in the taxi industry, Majoe had a first-hand view of the challenges of managing a business where large volumes of cash move through the system every day. The problem was straightforward but difficult to solve; knowing how much cash a taxi generated in a day and knowing how much the driver actually handed over to the owner were not always the same thing. Because owners have no independent way to verify passenger numbers, they often experience revenue leakage when drivers fail to report the full amount of cash collected. For many owners, that gap can amount to between R8 000 and R14 000 in monthly losses per vehicle. AI SOLUTION Rather than accepting this as part of doing business, Majoe began asking whether technology could track the movement of money without changing how the industry works. That question became the foundation for DriveCred, a technology-driven solution designed to bring financial accountability to the South

African minibus taxi industry. DriveCred addresses this challenge by installing an AIpowered passenger-counting camera inside the taxi. Using computer vision and AI, the device automatically counts passengers entering and exiting taxis. Because taxi fares are generally fixed per route, the number of passengers transported can be used to estimate the expected revenue that the taxi should generate. This creates an independent and verifiable operational record that owners can use to compare against the cash received from drivers. The system does not require changes to the current cash-based system used in the industry; rather, it adds a layer of accountability. Owners can view their operational data through a full-featured app dashboard and access it via WhatsApp through a multilingual AI assistant named Sello, which explains the data in simple, everyday language.

BROADER POTENTIAL But for Majoe, the system’s potential goes beyond reducing revenue leakage and driver skimming. Over time, accumulated operational data can serve as a financial record for taxi operators, helping them demonstrate their business activity. This verified data could potentially make it easier for operators to access formal financial services such as

credit, loans and structured fleet financing. For an industry that has historically relied heavily on cash transactions, the ability to create a digital financial history could unlock broader economic opportunities. It is also where his studies in financial accounting intersect with the problem that inspired his entrepreneurial journey. He is learning about financial systems and accountability in the classroom while attempting to apply those principles to an industry he has known throughout his life. Developing DriveCred has also forced Majoe to rethink what he believed his own career would look like. Although entrepreneurship was part of his family environment, the expectation was still that he should follow a conventional career path. “Even though we are business people, my parents or the family have always been pushing, ‘Go get a degree and get a job,’” he said. Like many young people, Majoe had once imagined his future in terms of a stable monthly salary. However, entrepreneurship has challenged that expectation. “As an entrepreneur, I’m beginning to realise that, actually, business won’t be the same as work where you get

money every month.” One of the challenges has been learning to measure progress when there is no guaranteed monthly income and no physical product that people can immediately see. Majoe said much of the work involved in developing DriveCred happens behind the scenes. “I don’t have an actual product, tangible,” he said. “So it’s also like, ‘Is it actually happening?’” Yet(there have already been signs that the idea is gaining momentum. On campus, DriveCred placed first at the Enactus UWC IntraVarsity competition and won the Hult Prize UWC campus round, advancing to the national finals.

Last year, Majoe was selected for MTN’s Top 30 Hustle Hub 2025, where he took part in an intensive mentorship programme in Sandton and received funding. More recently, the venture also received a cash prize through Startup Africa 2026. Majoe has also advanced from the internal rounds to the regional finals of the EDHE ABSA Entrepreneurship InnoVarsity 2026, taking place from 18–19 August 2026. These opportunities have exposed him to mentorship, funding and the wider startup ecosystem, while helping him move the idea from a problem experienced within his family business towards a solution.

Movement celebrates Women’s Month Non-profit organisation Victorious Women's Movement (VWM) held a Women's Month celebration at Hoofweg Primary School in Wesbank on Tuesday 11 August to raise awareness about genderbased violence. The event, attended by community members and Grade 7 girls from Hoofweg, was held in partnership with representatives from the Department of Social Development (DSD), Mfuleni police, Make It Matter, a Belhar charity, Kheth' Impilo health services and Old Mutual. Speakers included Ronell Higgins

from the DSD and Sgt Sibongile Mhlana from Mfuleni police, who encouraged women who suffer abuse to reach out for help and not to suffer in silence. Berenice Louw, director of VWM, said the day was about awareness, healing and hope. "Some women remain in unhealthy relationships or marriages because of financial dependence, fear of starting over, pressure from society, or because they feel trapped by their partner's status and circumstances. For some women, living with pain becomes something they have

accepted as normal — but suffering should never be normal. “Abuse is never love. Fear is never respect. Silence is never the answer. “Every woman deserves to be loved, respected, protected, valued, and free to live a life filled with happiness, peace, dignity, and hope," she said. Louw thanked Muhammed Tikka Chicken, who donated a 100-litre pot of akni, Azhar Timol (feeding scheme distributor), the Mustadafin Foundation and RayLicious Cakes, who gave cupcakes, for their contributions.

he City of Cape Town is investing in faster, more reliable digital access by upgrading 590 SmartCape computers at 50 public libraries across the city. The project, implemented by the City’s Information Systems and Technology Department, will over time see a technology refresh of all SmartCape computers at all City libraries. A further 379 will be upgraded in future. The 590 computers already upgraded provide faster and more reliable access for residents using library facilities for schoolwork, job applications, online services and other digital needs. SmartCape provides free access to computers and the internet, while City libraries also offer digital literacy training. “The SmartCape service was introduced in our libraries in July 2002, when we placed five computers at libraries,” Mayco member for Corporate Services Theresa Uys said. “Since then, over the past 24 years this programme has made a massive contribution to improving residents’ access to opportunities. We now have 560 350 registered users who use our computers to send emails, compile CVs, apply for jobs, do research for school assignments and so on. Registered users get 45 minutes’ free internet every day, and if you access the service with WiFi you get 500 MB free data every month. “We are extremely proud of how this programme has evolved over two decades and the exceptional uptake from our local communities.” “For many residents our public libraries are the gateway to opportunities,” Mayco Member for Community Services and Health Francine Higham pointed out. “They are where learners

These computers were relied on by learners, jobseekers and residents accessing essential online services. “When a library is targeted, it is not the City that suffers most it is the community,” said Higham. “Every stolen computer is one less opportunity for a learner to complete homework, a jobseeker to submit an application or a resident to access essential online services. We appeal to anyone with information to come forward so that these important community resources can be recovered.”

Connected, yet alone The word "isolation" comes from the Latin word insula, meaning "island". Over time, the word evolved through Italian (isolato) and French (isolé), meaning "made into an island". The feeling and connotations of isolation, however, have also morphed as we have headed deeper into the 21st century. DIGITAL COCOON Now the thought of closing our doors and wearing our headphones is seen as a comfort or a necessity, where we can destress and fulfil our own personal needs after enduring a demanding working day. Since the quick but subtle decline of televisions and broadcasting as an "escape" from reality and a means to stay informed and entertained, users have been tricked into becoming addicted to seeing their desires or hobbies packaged directly to them in short clips through TikTok's, Instagram reels or YouTube shorts. Families started interacting less, while

the children became more immersed in their tablets and YouTube channels, and angsty teenagers have to understand and sometimes compare their lives to the glamorous aesthetics and filters they see when watching the Instagram stories of their friends or celebrities they admire. Now we watch, comment and "like" friends and family from afar on social media when they have weddings, celebrate births, or grieve a loved one — like voyeurs, it seems. CELLPHONE SOURCES Our cellphones have become our main source of information and entertainment. Gone are the days when the family would huddle at six to watch the latest episode of 7de Laan. Now everyone can enjoy their own distractions and retreat to the peaceful quiet of their bedrooms. I think the Covid-19 pandemic marked the crucial breaking point and awakening for a new meaning of this word to be birthed. Stranded and locked away in our houses during the height of Covid-19, our need and the time we spent on our cellphones intensified. Whether this was video calls and texts with loved ones, sending emails and attending Teams meetings, or doom-scrolling on social media whilst being flooded with the latest news and death stats, we adapted to being "happily marooned on our own social islands". ALGORITHMS THAT FEEDS All the while, the algorithms have been tracking, studying and curating a feed dedicated to our tastes, interests, likes and dislikes — and yet most people aren't seeing that these tech wizards have woven a cocoon around the users and their cellphones. This trap, however, disguises itself. So many are also quick to defend their ideologies or mock those they disagree with online in such creative fashion with GIFs and images, and yet lack the courage to spew these thoughts in real life. With the popularity and convenience of artificial intelligence, it has also impacted the way we view images, listen to music or watch videos. Now we second-guess and doubt what we see and hear more than ever. It's a strange and interesting time to be alive in 2026, but now more than ever we need to enrich the way we communicate instead of resorting to numbing ourselves to death on our own devices. - KEANAN HARMSE

COMMEMORATION: Residents gathered at Het Posthuys Museum in Main Road, Muizenberg, on Saturday 8 August to witness a cannon firing marking the 1795 Battle of Muizenberg. The event was hosted by Muizenberg Heritage in partnership with the Gri Guriqau Xam Research Institute and the Cannon Association of South Africa. Heritage Western Cape formally gazetted the battle site as a Provincial Heritage Site on Friday 27 March this year, following a nomination by the City of Cape Town’s Environmental Management Department. The battle took place when a British naval fleet attacked Dutch forces on the slopes of the Muizenberg mountains. The Dutch eventually surrendered the Cape, allowing Britain to gain control of the important Indian trade route. Another cannon firing is planned for Heritage Day, Thursday 24 September.

Cost of uniforms feels like ﬁnancial exploitation I am writing this letter in the hope that it will highlight a pressing concern for single parents and lower-income families. We recently started shopping for school uniform items for our grandson, who enters Grade 1 next year. We were shocked by the prices, largely driven by the requirement to purchase plain items with compulsory school badges stitched or printed on them, including shirts, dresses, jerseys, tracksuits, and blazers. A Grade 1 learner typically wears a uniform for only 12 to 18 months before outgrowing it. Paying up to R400 for a jersey, R300 for a shirt, or R600 for a tracksuit top places an unfair ﬁnancial strain on families already struggling with the cost of living. While clothing banks exist, they do not address the core issue. Why are basic school clothes so heavily branded and expensive? Why are parents not allowed to buy plain, affordable white shirts or standard items from general retail

stores? We ask why the Western Cape and National Departments of Education allow what feels like blatant ﬁnancial exploitation of parents and guardians. Additionally, I would like to address the issue of school stationery and supplies. Are school stationery packages covered under fee exemptions or subsidies? If not, why are parents often pressured or required to purchase stationery directly through the school rather than sourcing cheaper alternatives independently. And why are parents expected to supply general administrative and sanitary items such as A4 paper reams and toilet paper for the school’s routine operations? Schools should operate as educational institutions, not proﬁt-driven enterprises. I hope these matters receive urgent attention from the relevant departments as families begin preparing for the upcoming school year. A CONCERNED FUNDER OF A SINGLE MOTHER

Very kind Samaritans return lost cellphone It was two Fridays ago, I believe on 24 July, when I, with a very dear friend of ours and her three little girls walked to the little playpark corner of Gert van Rooyen and Malmesbury roads. The little girls always enjoy this playpark with the merry-go-round and the slide and were having great fun. I took a video of them with my cellular phone and went to sit down on the little couch before returning to our cottage at La Provence for refreshments. There was a knock at the front door and our on-duty security guard, seeing me, asked whether I had my cellular phone with me. I had in fact just realised that I didn’t have it in my pocket when a man with two little children beside him, drew my attention to a cellular

phone in his hand and holding it up for me to see. It was, in fact, my phone. I was completely ﬂabbergasted, surprised, and shocked "out of my boots"! I offered him a reward which he declined, and I couldn’t stop saying thank you. A week later I had my little granddaughter with me, went to the same park and on our way home the good samaritan and his little daughter had noticed us and waited for us at our security gates. Traffic officer was a hero in a dark moment in our life A blowout incident that happened on the N1 highway about 1,5 kilometres before the N1 petrol station northbound at 05:50 on Saturday 1 August left us in a very nervous and precarious position. But fear not, Western Cape traffic officer S. Sonday came to our rescue. What a relief and stunning sight to

see the blue lights lighting up the sombre moment we were experiencing. Officer Sonday stayed right behind us and with us all the way until we were able to nurse the vehicle all the way to the petrol station which was almost an hour on the road with the terrible damage done to the tyre.

ie Tygerberg-kinderkoor het 'n besondere prestasie behaal deur as wenners aangewys te word in die kinderkoor-afdeling van die Summa Cum Laude-kompetisie, wat oor die langnaweek by Sun City gehou is. Die koor is met 'n "Gold Level 3 Master"-uitslag bekroon. Die Summa Cum Laude-kompetisie is 'n internasionale koor- en orkeskompetisie vir die jeug wat vanuit Wene, Oostenryk, in samewerking met die Choral Celebration Network Foundation gekoördineer word. Dit was die eerste keer dat die organisasie die kompetisie buite Oostenryk aangebied het. Die beoordelaars was Saul Zaks van Denemarke, Kenneth Griffith van Boston (VSA), Pearl Shangkuan van Michigan (VSA), en Renette Bouwer en Bernard Krüger van Suid-Afrika. Kore en orkeste van Suid-Afrika, Zimbabwe, Duitsland, Oostenryk en Kanada het deelgeneem. WÊRELDKLAS Die Tygerberg-kinderkoor is tans derde geplaas volgens Interkultur se Top 1000-ranglys vir die beste kore wêreldwyd. Die koor is die enigste kinderkoor in die top-vyf en ook tweede op die wêreldranglys in die afdeling vir kinder- en jeugkore. Onder leiding van die dirigent Karina Erasmus, met Elizca Mulder as begeleier, het die koor in Sun City 'n veelsydige program met musiek uit verskillende style en tradisies aangebied. Hul kompetisieprogram het "Cantate Domino" van Charlotte Botha, die "Ave Maria" van Mozart, "Ave Maris Stella" van Franco Prinsloo, "A Puppet's Dream" van Darius Lim

Die koorlede is kinders tussen 10 en 15 jaar oud van skole van oor die noordelike voorstede van Kaapstad heen. Die koor vier vanjaar sy 54ste bestaansjaar. Die sukses in Sun City volg op 'n jaar van groot internasionale en nasionale optredes. Dit is 'n verdere hoogtepunt vir die koor, wat reeds vir meer as vyf dekades aan jong sangers die geleentheid bied om hul liefde vir musiek te ontwikkel en op groot verhoë te deel. Vir Erasmus, wat reeds 26 jaar by die koor betrokke is, is die prestasie ook 'n persoonlike mylpaal. "Dit is wonderlik om te sien hoe kinders uit verskillende skole deur musiek saamkom en 'n span vorm. Die kinders het ongelooﬂik hard gewerk vir hierdie kompetisie en ek is baie trots op hulle. Om Suid-Afrika op hierdie vlak te kan verteenwoordig, is 'n groot voorreg," sê Erasmus. Die Tygerberg-kinderkoor se volgende groot geleenthede is die Prestige-konsert op 20 September in die Endlersaal, Stellenbosch, en 'n optrede op 11 Oktober by die Stellenbosch Woordfees. New production of Mamma Mia! at Artscape A new production of Mamma Mia! is coming to Artscape Opera House in Cape Town from Thursday 3 September to Sunday 11 October, followed by a run at Teatro Montecasino in Johannesburg from Friday 16 October to Sunday 22 November. The production features Amra-Faye Wright, who played Velma Kelly in Chicago the Musical on Broadway for 23 years, as Donna Sheridan. Samantha Peo joins as Donna's friend Tanya, reuniting with Wright from the 2005 and 2008 South African productions of Chicago. Cape Town audiences will know Peo from The Addams Family: the Musical and A Little Night Music. Lindy Abromowitz Sachs completes the Donna and the Dynamos trio as Rosie, with credits including Kinky Boots, Grease and The Sound of Music. Leah Mari plays Sophie Sheridan, having recently shared the lead role of Maria in My Fair Lady and originated the role of Vivian Ward in the South African production of Pretty Woman: the Musical. Rugby sevens kicks off

orningstar Junior Rugby hosted its inaugural sevens rugby tournament on Monday 10 August, bringing 10 teams from various parts of Cape Town together. The teams were from Goodwood Junior Jaguars, Sakumzi Rugby Organisation, Union Milnerton Rugby Club, Connect NTK Rugby Football Club, Primrose Rugby Football Club, Helderberg Rugby Club, Edusmart Group, Kuils River Rugby Juniors and Hamediehs Rugby Football Club. The tournament aimed to give young players the opportunity to play rugby, gain exposure and develop their skills — "something that can be difficult to find in under-resourced communities", said Aldo Carelse, one of the project coordinators at Morningstar Junior Rugby. 10 000 turn out for Blisters KAYLYNNE BANTOM Foggy weather couldn’t dampen the spirits of the 10 000 people who turned out for this year’s Blisters for Bread Charity Family Fun Walk at Green Point Common on Sunday 16 August. Organised by the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) in association with Lucky Star, the event raised funds to support the organisation’s efforts to provide meals to thousands of vulnerable children across the Western Cape. With this year’s event drawing a record 10 000 participants, PSFA director Petrina Pakoe says they are already looking ahead to next year, with plans to build on the success and reach even more supporters. “The event is over but the support that we need is ongoing. We are grateful to everybody who came to support. Every entry feeds 23 children.” She thanked participants and sponsors for their contribution, while appealing for continued support as preparations get underway for the next walk. Premier Alan Winde said the event is about more than bringing people together. “I love attending each year because this is such an amazing cause and the community comes together to help

our kids. You cannot expect to get a good school outcome if you don’t have something in your stomach.” According to Winde, more than 500 000 learners get a school meal every day and the PSFA is one of those that help people get food in their stomach. “People always say stomachs full, eyes closed. But I say stomachs full open brain,” said Winde. Ricardo Mackenzie, Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, reminded participants that their involvement goes beyond the walk itself. “Your entry and participation it what is giving thousands of children from this province a daily meal. “This is not just about being active, it’s about supporting our communities in need.” Kareema Allie, a representative from the BVP social club in Hanover Park, said this was their first year participating and it won’t be their last. Bernadette Solomon from Mitchells Plain said she participates every year as a way of giving back during her birthday month. Albertina Mlenga said she and her three friends travelled from Velddrif to support this “worthy cause.”
