man died after his car caught alight in an accident in Colorado Park, Mitchells Plain, last week. According to Traffic Services spokesperson Nolusindiso Piyose a motor-vehicle accident on the corner of Weltevreden Way and Highlands Drive caused a fire in one of the vehicles involved. Videos of the accident on social media showed a taxi colliding with two vehicles at high speed and firefighters dousing a trail of ignited petrol as it flowed down the street. Commentary on the posts said the man was burnt beyond recognition. Another thread on social media said the man who died was a father from Blackheath and that the taxi driver had an epileptic fit and lost control of the vehicle while taking his daughter out for ice cream. Dit is die eerste keer dat AMAGP in die Wes-Kaap vergader. Die vergadering dien ook as die stigtingsvergadering van die Wes-Kaapse struktuur van AMAGP.

BEDREIGING VAN PENSIOENFONDS "Derduisende GEPF-pensioenarisse en staatsdienswerkers is onbewus van die geweldige omvang van die bedreiging van hul pensioenfonds," sê Albin Bowler, die Wes-Kaapse koördineerder van die AMAGP. "Volgens verskeie mediaberigte verloor die pensioenfonds jaarliks miljarde rande met swak beleggings weens politieke besluite. So is daar in die 2023-'24-boekjaar meer as R100 miljard verloor weens plundering, asook verlore geleentheidskostes met dié swak besluite. "Alhoewel die GEPF-bestuur gereeld spog dat dit die grootste pensioenfonds in Afrika is, is die opbrengs op belegging van die swakstes onder SuidAfrikaanse beleggingsfondse. Selfs die Vereniging van Staatsamptenare het in 'n verklaring op 2 Julie sy ernstige kommer en ontsteltenis uitgespreek oor die plundering en swak opbrengste weens 'ongelyste ondernemings', of sogenaamde transformasieprojekte," sê Bowler. OOGLOPENDE ONGELYKHEID "Daar is sistemiese onreg, ooglopende ongelykheid en diskriminasie as die GEPF se jaarlikse verhogings vergelyk word met die pensioenfonds vir politici, die Political Office-Bearers Pension Fund (POBPF). "Vir die 2023-'24-boekjaar was die

beleggingsopbrengs van die GEPF 'n powere 4,9% teenoor die POBPF se 10%. So gaan dit elke jaar. " 'n Rede vir die GEPF se swak prestasie is dat geld in ongenoteerde projekte belê word. Hierdie sogenaamde transformasie-projekte presteer swak en vereis gereeld finansiële reddingsboeie. So het GEPF-pensioenarisse miljarde rand verloor net met Ayo Technology Solutions. Laasgenoemde se oorspronklike kapitaalontvangs was R4 miljard. 'n Ander onderneming, Daybreak Foods, het in 2025 drie reddingsboeie ontvang. Die eerste twee het meer as R400 miljoen beloop," sê hy. "Hierdie kontras is moreel problematies, aangesien albei pensioenfondse deur dieselfde parlementêre prosesse geskep en goedgekeur is. Hoe kan politici dit regverdig om hul eie aftrede deur wetgewing goed te verseker, maar dan 'n wet maak vir diegene wat daagliks die staat se werk doen, wat hul belegging jaarliks koopkrag laat verloor," vra Bowler. "Die GEPF se jaarlikse pensioenverhogings word beperk tot die inflasiekoers — spesifiek 75% van die vorige jaar se inflasiekoers. Oor tyd het hierdie beleid ’n kumulatiewe negatiewe effek. Inspectors to visit Kuils River homes in stormwater survey Residents of Kuils River can expect visits from City of Cape Town property inspectors from July as part of a survey to identify unsanctioned stormwater connections to the sewer network. The City’s Water and Sanitation Department, through its Water Demand Management: Water Pollution Control section, is conducting a stormwateringress survey across the area. The aim is to determine the extent to which stormwater is being discharged, without authorisation, into the sewer system and not the stormwater drainage network. According to the City this type of ingress has a significant impact on the operations of the sewer system and on wastewatertreatment processes. WHEN WILL INSPECTORS VISIT? Inspectors will conduct property visits during the following times: Weekdays: 15:30 to 18:00 Saturdays: 09:00 to 16:00 Residents are asked to cooperate with appointed inspectors to allow the survey to be carried out successfully. HOW YOU CAN HELP PROTECT THE SEWER SYSTEM One of the most common causes of stormwater entering the sewer system is incorrectly connected roof gutters and downpipes. Rainwater from roofs should drain to the street's stormwater system or be stored for reuse, and not channelled into the sewer. Residents can also help prevent blockages and sewer overflows by keeping

the following in mind: Wipe fats, oils and grease from pans into the bin before washing up, and never pour them down the drain, as they harden and trap solids. Use sink strainers to catch food scraps and solids. Compost or bin fruit and vegetable peels rather than washing them down the sink. Never flush nappies, wet wipes, sanitary products, earbuds or other nonbiodegradable items down the toilet. These do not break down and cause serious blockages. Never dump rubbish into manholes or the sewer system. Report missing manhole covers, blocked drains, burst pipes or illegal dumping to the City. Blockages and overflows pose health risks, cause foul odours and pollute waterways as well as lead to avoidable repair costs.

Taxi tales come to life

outh African commuters know that a taxi ride is never just about getting from point A to point B. It’s a theatre of voices, a melting pot of stories and, sometimes, a comedy show on wheels. Dr Jacob Cloete, a political scientistturned-storyteller from the University of the Western Cape (UWC), has captured this vibrant slice of life in his latest book, Stories in a Bellville Taxi. Cloete, who hails from Namaqualand and lectures at UWC, has long been immersed in the serious world of governance and democracy. His earlier academic work dissected political systems with precision, offering insights into policy and power. But with this book, he trades his scholarly analysis for the backseat of a minibus, giving voice to the raw, unfiltered stories of everyday South Africans. “This book was inspired by and written for my son. He started high school in 2025 and decided to take up drama, and for this, he needed stories — stories that he, his family, his community and I can relate to. It was for this reason that I began writing Stories in a Bellville Taxi,” says Cloete. POIGNANT AND FUNNY The book, published by Shofar Books in June 2026, is available in English and Afrikaans. It draws inspiration from Cloete’s daily commute between Tyger Falls and Bellville South, where the taxi becomes a microcosm of the nation. Conversations overheard on these rides touch on unemployment, xenophobia, gangsterism, and service delivery failures. Yet his narrative is anything but bleak. He infuses humour into the chaos, reminding readers that laughter often thrives even in the most challenging circumstances.

Brazilian woman sentenced for drugs A 35-year-old Brazilian woman has been sentenced to jail for dealing in drugs. The accused, Gleyiane da Silva, was sentenced in the Bellville Regional Court on Wednesday 8 July to a total of eight years, of which three are suspended for a period of five years, the Hawks said. Spokesperson Lt Col Siyabulela Vukubi said members of the Hawks received information in March 2025 that Da Silva had boarded a flight from Brazil to South Africa and on searching her luggage at Cape Town International Airport discovered cocaine inside a sports bag. “Further information revealed she had swallowed bullets of cocaine, which were later retrieved.” The estimated value of the drugs was more than R500 000. Vukubi said Da Silva had pleaded guilty and was subsequently sentenced. On contravention of the Civil Aviation Act she received four years, wholly suspended for five years.

Junior chess champs battle it out

ape Town hosted one of the largest editions of the national open in the country's chess history, drawing more than 500 players from across South Africa and beyond. The 2026 South African Open Chess Championships concluded on Sunday 5 July at DF Akademie in Bellville, following nine days of competition. Organised by the Western Cape Chess Association (WCCA) in partnership with Chess South Africa, and supported by the provincial department of cultural affairs and sport, the tournament was held from 27 June to 5 July and offered a total prize fund of R159 100 across all sections. The event featured four main open sections alongside 12 junior age group categories, with the host province, Western Cape, well represented among the final standings across all sections. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP Charlton Mnyasta from Elsies River claimed the 2026 South African Open Chess Championship, finishing on seven points from nine rounds. Mnyasta was joined on seven points by Tezihano Mnyasta, with the title decided in Charlton's favour on a tiebreak — a result that placed two members of the same family at the top of the final standings. The top five finishers in the championship section were (in order from first position) Charlton Mnyasta, Tezihano Mnyasta, Matfey Rogov, Calvin Klaasen and Craig Willenberg, with placings from second onwards determined by a tiebreak. Special prizes were awarded to Luke Bell, who finished ninth overall and claimed the Best Junior Award, and to Lyndon Bouah, who received the Best Senior Award. Call for staff escorts triples as City services targeted The City’s law enforcement facilitated 10 700 security escort requests in the past year, as demand for protection of staff and service providers continues to outstrip available resources. The surge represents is a big jump from last year, when the unit averaged 275 escorts per month. This year, the monthly average climbed to 890, said to a City spokesperson. A year ago, the City availed an additional R100 million for enforcement escorts amid increased attacks on staff and service providers. Key directorates of the escort unit include water and sanitation, energy, urban mobility, urban waste management, human settlements, and community services and health. According to the City, service requests are prioritised based on the risk rating

of an area, with 16 policing precincts currently prioritised where risks include violent crime threats such as gang violence, hijacking, robbery, and extortion. The City is tracking attacks on staff, vehicle hijackings and extortion attempts daily through its Safety and Security Information Management Services. The Safety and Security Investigation Unit has registered 292 extortion-related cases between 12 June 2017 and 22 April this year. Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith called for urgent reform and greater cooperation from law enforcement agencies. “So apart from investing in human resources for escorts, we are also trying to work smarter to end this threat, but the toll on the directorate is significant,” he says.

urbanville Majorettes Club has exceeded all expectations at this year's provincial championships. Now the club is appealing to the community and business sector to help send its athletes to the national stage. The local drummies who has just been crowned provincial Large Drill champions is urgently appealing for financial support to compete at the 2026 FDDCMSA National Championships, and without it, some of the Western Cape's most talented young athletes may not make it to the starting line. Durbanville Majorettes Club (DMC), based at Aristea Primary School in Kraaifontein, was founded in 2019 to provide young athletes from all backgrounds with access to the sport. Now in its seventh year of competition, DMC supports approximately 60 junior and senior athletes of all backgrounds drawn from schools across Kraaifontein, Durbanville, Bellville, Kuils River and surrounding communities. The athletes train for up to 23 hours per week, including weekends and school holidays," says the club's Yvonne Viljoen. "Beyond the medals and titles, majorettes have had a significant impact on the lives of many of our athletes by building confidence, discipline, leadership skills and a strong sense of belonging. "Many of the children join the club shy and unsure of themselves, but through training and competition they grow into confident young people who are proud of their achievements and supportive of their teammates. “For some, the club has become a second family and a positive space where they can develop both personally and athletically," says Viljoen

Health department warns of carbon monoxide poisoning As temperatures drop across the Western Cape, many families are doing everything they can to stay warm. Windows are shut against the cold, gas heaters and charcoal braziers are lit, and generators are used during power outages. While these measures may provide comfort, they can also create a deadly risk inside the home. The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is urging residents to take precautions against carbon monoxide poisoning, known as the “silent killer” because it is impossible to see, smell or taste. Carbon monoxide is produced when fuels such as charcoal, wood, paraffin, petrol, or gas do not burn completely. When fuelburning appliances are used in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces, the gas can quickly build up to dangerous levels without anyone realising it. Carine Marks, director of the Tygerberg Poisons Information Centre, said carbon monoxide poisoning is often overlooked because its symptoms resemble common winter illnesses. “Carbon monoxide poisoning is one of the most easily missed medical emergencies during winter. “Early symptoms, including headache, dizziness, nausea, tiredness and confusion, are often mistaken for flu, fatigue, or a viral illness. By the time people realise something is wrong, the consequences can be severe.” Over the past year, the National Poison Information Helpline recorded 25 reported cases of carbon monoxide poisoning, including eight children under the age of 12. However, Marks cautioned that these figures represent only a fraction of the true burden. “Carbon monoxide poisoning is significantly under-reported. Many cases are never recognised, are misdiagnosed or never reach poison information centres. We suspect the true number of poisonings is much higher.” WARNING SIGNS One important warning sign is when several people in the same household develop similar symptoms at the same time. “If more than one person experiences headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual drowsiness while indoors, carbon monoxide exposure should be considered immediately. Leave the building, get into fresh air and seek urgent medical attention, even if symptoms begin to improve.” Preventing carbon monoxide poisoning is

simple but requires vigilance. Never use charcoal braziers (imbawula/ mbawula), gas heaters, or other openflame appliances in completely enclosed rooms. Keep a window or door slightly open to ensure adequate ventilation, even during very cold weather. Always place generators outdoors, well away from windows, doors, and air vents. Never sleep in a room where charcoal, gas, paraffin, or other fuel-burning appliances are in use. CHILDREN MOST VULNERABLE Dr Bradley Browne of the Red Cross Poisons Information Centre said young children are particularly vulnerable because they breathe faster than adults, resulting in greater carbon monoxide exposure relative to their body weight. In addition, the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning in children are often non-specific, making the condition more difficult to recognise. Pregnant women should also take particular care, as the developing fetus is especially vulnerable to the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning. “Every winter we see children requiring emergency care for preventable injuries and illnesses linked to unsafe heating practices. Carbon monoxide poisoning can progress rapidly and, without timely treatment, can have devastating consequences. It is all of our responsibility to ensure that we are keeping warm in a safe way.” Browne encouraged families to make ventilation part of their winter safety routine. “A small gap in a window may seem insignificant, but it can save lives. We encourage every household to use heaters safely, ensure adequate ventilation, even when it is cold, and recognise the warning signs of carbon monoxide poisoning before it is too late.”

Pride and prejudice seems to cloud our society “Imagine all the people, living life in peace.” Perhaps these lyrics have sparked a familiar melody for whoever’s reading. This evergreen seventies tune, “Imagine”, from former Beatles band leader John Lennon, has become an anti-war anthem for peace, justice, equality and most importantly empathy, a word which seems to be deafened and bludgeoned in this “age of outrage” we ﬁnd ourselves navigating. He was shot four times in the back by a “fan” after he autographed his album and died a few metres from his hotel in Manhattan on December 8, 1980. The song “Imagine”, released during the Vietnam war, which killed over three million young men, children, mothers and fathers, is accompanied by a soft piano and gentle melody and sounds like a prayer or plea for understanding in a time of senseless bloodshed. During the war, despite the news reports commenting on the latest batch of deaths and destruction, many young men were drafted and sent in droves like bullets in an assembly line. Tragically the song has become an idyllic lament for a society where we can all respect and care for each other regardless of skin colour, culture or creed. Luther King Jnr, who preached peace and non-violence in his quest to ﬁght race segregation and inequality, was assassinated along with Malcolm X. As if the call for basic dignity and equal rights is so outrageous it could lead to death. Ironically the author of Utopia, Sir Thomas More, also lost his head for his visions for a future society. He was beheaded in 1535 for treason, after he refused to accept King Henry VIII as the Supreme Head of the Church of England.

THE POPULARITY OF ‘RAGE-BAITING’ IS ALSO SAD TO WITNESS

The novel criticised greed, power and supported women’s rights and religious freedom, during a conservative time in the 16th-century under the king’s reign. Even musical legend Bob Marley whose protest songs supported peace, freedom and “One Love”, was shot but survived a politically motivated assassination attempt ahead of the 1976 general election in Jamaica. This act however only fueled his desire to continue singing about the struggle to love in an unsympathetic world. These days apathy and cynicism have become a popular camouflage to endure the widespread hate, violence, intolerance and propaganda infiltrating our psyches wherever we go. Whether doom-scrolling on our cellphones, listening to the news on our car-radios or even stopping for a quick catch-up at work, we’re flooded with the latest tragic news. Once again we’ll hear about the latest air missile strike in the Middle East, the price of petrol and goods skyrocketing again, the unrestricted plagiarism of AI models regurgitating artworks and voices, all for the sake of profit. These days the integrity of the newsroom has also been more important in the wake of various influencers reporting on news and publishing their pieces, often with their own agendas, without much consideration for verifying information in the hopes of increasing followers and monetising their content. Lately, the popularity of “rage-baiting” is also sad to witness too, you’ve probably seen many videos of people manipulating each other until an argument or violent fight occurs. Research shows algorithms financially reward anger which creates cognitive urgency, compelling users to comment, correct, or share in real-time, which all boosts engagement and virality. I read that the primitive parts of our brain, the amygdala, scan the environment for threats and process negative information significantly faster than positive experiences. Pride and prejudice seems to cloud our society even more so these days, while these algorithms, these heartless systems capitalise and advertise on any content that can shackle the viewers in an endless loop that keeps their profits high and our attention spans low. Firefighter smoke inhalation Warm somer op pad article was misleading With reference to the article that appeared on your website on 6 July with the headline “Exposure to smoke is taking a toll on Cape Town’s firefighters”: It is unfortunate that the article published on the UWC website misrepresented the findings of the study. The headline, for example, was quite simply misleading. The City reached out to the researchers and the headline has now been corrected. Based on the study’s own results, only 278 firefighters participated, with 53% showing some symptoms that included coughing, running noses and headaches. That represents less than 15% of firefighters within the City of Cape Town and it must be noted the study was conducted while staff were on duty. Also to note that 97,8% of participants had normal lung function, which the research found is significantly higher than that reported in comparable studies conducted in other countries. To note, the Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service conducts a functional ability test on a quarterly basis,

which measures firefighters’ respiratory rate. In addition, firefighters undergo in-house medical screening before every physical ability test. Should they have abnormal screening results, they are referred to either their private medical provider or to the City’s occupational health department. Staff who drive and operate appliances and equipment must undergo compulsory medical testing every two years. The Fire Service also has very strict medical screening in place for those joining its ranks. In addition, staff are required to follow fitness programmes on their on duty days. Our staff are trained to perform under all hazardous conditions and respiratory protection equipment is provided on every fire engine to ensure staff remain safe. We take the health and safety of our firefighters very seriously and we provide the highest level of respiratory protection in the form of a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus Set. I wonder what happened to the grand plans at Athlone power station site, after having spent a few thousand (millions perhaps) on the project. Now the City wants to re-develop the parking area at Athlone stadium for housing and commercial purposes, while stadium visitors fear they might ﬁnd themselves without a parking facility. So why not build a big commercial and residential centre on the parking lot with adequate parking under or above? Show respect to the police who put their lives at risk to keep us safe We live in a time when it has become fashionable to criticise those in uniform. Social media is ﬂooded with videos of what went wrong, rarely with footage of what went right. And yet, day after day, men and women in the police show up, often understaffed, underresourced, and underappreciated to do a job that most of us could never do. They respond to calls in the early hours of the

morning when the rest of us are asleep. They walk into situations that others run away from. They deal with trauma, violence, and heartbreak on a daily basis, and then go home to their own families and try to leave it all at the door. Most of the time, no one says thank you. I am not naive. I know that there are those within the service who have let communities down, and accountability

matters. But it would be deeply unfair to allow the actions of a few to overshadow the quiet dedication of the many who serve with integrity and honour. Libraries fête women writers

ity libraries launched a women’s short-story anthology, Her Story of Strength, at Melton Rose Library on Saturday 11 July. The collection is the culmination of the Her Voice Project, a community-driven women’s writing initiative led and facilitated by Magrietha “Rita” Swanepoel, who runs several writing clubs. She conceived the initiative, secured funding from the National Arts Council of South Africa, presented writing workshops and guided participants through developing their personal narratives into structured short stories. The project was established to give women, particularly those from disadvantaged communities and those affected by violence, poverty, loss and difficult life circumstances, an chance to tell their stories. FROM WORKSHOPS TO PUBLICATION Twenty-four women were initially selected to take part in the programme. For many this was their first experience of writing or recording deeply personal experiences. Through structured workshops, participants learned how to transform memories and lived experiences into meaningful narratives, develop characters, structure stories and communicate emotion honestly. The completed anthology

contains 21 short stories reflecting courage, survival, healing, hope, perseverance and the remarkable resilience of women. Surene Esterhuizen and Stefaans Coetzee compiled the individual stories into the completed anthology. Area head for library and information services René Walker welcomed the writers and groups to the libraries, having liaised with libraries in her area and helping to connect people with the project. The initiative involved Melton Rose Library, Sir Lowry’s Pass Library, Eerste River Library and Bellville Library. Library staff provided spaces in which the women could meet, learn, write and encourage one another. “Libraries should not only provide access to stories that have already been written,” said Walker. “They should also create opportunities for new stories to emerge. The Her Voice Project demonstrates what can be achieved when community members and libraries work together. Rita brought the vision, expertise and determination, while the libraries provided welcoming spaces where women could learn, write, grow and support one another.” Writers’ circles have been established at some of the participating libraries, creating ongoing opportunities for creative expression, learning, peer support and community engagement. The launch programme was facilitated by Walker and included a personal storytelling contribution by Elaine Johnson, presentations by guest speakers Karin Potgieter and Alicia Bock, and a reading by contributing writer Eveline Fluks. Guests were also treated to performances by The Treble Clefs, a 22-member community choir comprising women from Sir Lowry’s Pass to Brackenfell. The launch celebrated the vision and determination of Rita Swanepoel, the courage of the participating writers and the role of libraries in creating spaces where community voices can be heard.

Inleiding Die Stad Kaapstad oorweeg dit om regte aan Hope for Africa NPO toe te staan vir die gebruik, bestuur, beheer van en opstel van ’n nuwe fasiliteitsbestuursooreenkoms ten opsigte van erf 29570 vir ’n tydperk van 2 jaar en 11 maande. Die rede vir die voorstel om ’n langtermynreg om die betrokke kapitaalbates te gebruik, beheer of te bestuur toe te staan Die bate word tans deur ’n NPO as ’n vroeëkindontwikkelingsentrum gebruik. a) Die ECD-sentrum voldoen aan die vereistes ten opsigte van gehalte-ECD-dienste en -programme wat die kinders en breër gemeenskappe sal bevoordeel. b) Die NPO het bevestig dat hulle die nodige hulpbronne het om toe te sien dat alle infrastruktuur onder hulle beheer bedryf, in stand gehou en beveilig word soos regtens vereis ingevolge die fasiliteitsbestuursooreenkomste wat met die Stad aangegaan sal word. c) Gemeenskappe benodig kontinuïteit ten opsigte van die dienste wat aan kinders en hul ouers gebied word. Deur die toestaan van die regte word die NPO nie net in staat gestel om hulle besigheid voort te sit nie, maar ook om werkgeleenthede te bied aan gemeenskapslede met die nodige vaardigheid en vermoë om oor langer tydperke in die ECD-fasiliteit te werk, wat hierdie gemeenskapslede toelaat om hul lewensbestaan beter te kan beplan. Enige verwagte voordele vir die munisipaliteit wat uit die toestaan van die regte aan die NPO kan voortspruit Die Stad sal ’n bate vir die voorsiening van gehalte-ECD-dienste aan arm gemeenskappe kataliseer. Die Stad sal voordeel trek uit die optimale benutting van die bates deur huurders vir langtermynhuurooreenkoms te verkry en sodoende volhoubare ECD-dienste aan arm gemeenskappe oor die verhuringstydperk genereer. Vroeëkindontwikkelingsdienste wat in ’n veilige en versorgende omgewing gelewer word, bied gerusstelling en steun aan ouers, wat dan in staat is om aktief aan die ekonomie deel te neem. Veral vroue vind baat by veilige en goed bestuurde ECD-sentrums aangesien dit hulle toelaat om werk te soek en geleenthede in die werkmark te aanvaar. Die oorkoepelende voordeel sal ’n toename wees in die aantal kinders aan wie toegang gebied word tot geregistreerde ECD-sentrums wat aan veiligheids- en gesondheidsvereistes en aan die ontwikkelingsbehoeftes van ’n kind voldoen. Sodoende sal die Stad bydra tot die ontwikkeling van ’n vaste opvoedingsfondament vir kinders om by die formele skoolstelsel aan te sluit. Finansiële opbrengs en verlies voortspruitend uit die toestaan van regte aan die NPO Die dienste wat die NPO lewer, is in die belang van die plaaslike gemeenskap. Die NPO sal dus nominale huurgeld betaal, gelykstaande aan die tariefhuur vir maatskaplike fasiliteite van R1 386 per jaar, BTW ingesluit. Hierdie nominale huurgeld gelykstaande aan die tariefhuur vir maatskaplike fasiliteite sal onderworpe wees aan styging volgens die Stad se tariefstruktuur soos deur die Raad goedgekeur en soos van tyd tot tyd gewysig. Indien goedgekeur, sal die Raad die ﬁnansiële inkomste verbeur wat verkry sou word indien die fasiliteit aan ’n privaat operateur verhuur sou word. Ingevolge artikel 17 van die Wet op Plaaslike Regering: Munisipale Stelsels, Wet 32 van 2000, word die publiek en belangstellende partye of groepe die geleentheid gebied om van 10 Julie tot 10 Augustus 2026 kommentaar, insette of aanbevelings by die munisipaliteit in te dien. aren Zoid steps away from her rock ensemble for A New Theatrical Work, a strippedback performance alongside pianist Anton Eloff at Curro Durbanville High School Theatre on Sunday 2 August at 15:00. Without her band, Zoid takes the stage with only an acoustic guitar, accompanied by Eloff's cinematic piano work. The result is a deliberately intimate show, personal in a way that happens when an artist trusts their material and an audience commits to genuine listening. A New Theatrical Work is more than a concert. It is a conversation between two musicians exploring themes of blood ties, music, laughter and the bonds that sustain us. The theatrical framework raises a philosophical question: if life resembles a video game, with its multiple lives and respawning mechanics, what does that mean for how we navigate our own story?

WHERE CONCERT MEETS THEATRE At the intimate Curro Durbanville High School Theatre, the boundaries between concert and theatre dissolve. Zoid's songs become monologues and Eloff's piano takes on an orchestral quality, creating something that moves beyond traditional genre boundaries. For those familiar with Zoid's rock recordings, the acoustic setting reveals new dimensions of her work.

Danksy ‘n vriendelike, en effe deur die vere, pterodaktiel, Terry, die vlieënde reptiel, voel hulle gou minder verlore. Terry neem hulle dadelik onder sy vlerk. Die ontmoeting is egter van korte duur, want Terry is besig om te vlug met die eiland se laaste dino-eier! Is Terry dan 'n eierdief? Ongelukkig is daar die nare Professor Fosselina Voetspoor en haar onhandige handlanger, Robbies Relik, wat sommer gou hul planne in die wiele ry. Fosselina is bekend daarvoor dat sy dinosourusse

Festival of Unity gets underway AVRIL FILLIES TS Bellville and Goodwood Rugby Club are among the 19 local schools, rugby clubs and community institutions that are currently in action in hockey, rugby and netball in the Festival of Unity until Friday 18 July at three different venues in the City. The week-long tournament kicked off on Monday 13 July and 14 of the poshest schools from the UK are taking part in hockey at Hartleyvale Stadium in Observatory, rugby at Jan Burger Sports Complex in Parow North and netball at St Cyprians School in Fish Hoek. “The multi-sports event is happening in the Mother City to uplift Capetonian kids from diverse backgrounds. The money raised are for talented kids from our communities to travel for the first time to represent their country in Thailand in rugby and we need the community's support to make it happen,” says spokesperson Karen Breytenbach. The UK teams take part in mixed boys rugby, girls netball and boys and girls hockey at u-16 and u-18 age level. Other local clubs include Be The Difference Foundation, Groote Schuur High, Fish Hoek High, Collegians RFC and WiseUp Foundation. UK Schools include Clifton School, Ethan College, Fogle College, Claire's Court School and St Anselm's College. The tournament started on Monday 13 July with hockey fixtures at Hartleyvale Stadium and yesterday, 14 July, the rugby kicked off on the A and B fields at Jan Burger Sports Complex in Parow North,

as well as netball at St Cyprians in Fish Hoek. “Connect has been invited to participate in the Globe Schools Challenge in Thailand in December in a tournament that brings together teams from around the world, providing young rugby players the opportunity to compete internationally, to experience different cultures and represent SA on a global stage. “To make this opportunity available we will be selecting a representative team of rugby players from the Festival of Unity. They will earn their place in the team through commitment, character, sportmanship and performance during the week,” Breytenbach says. To make the tour possible R690 000 is needed and funds will be raised through Back-a-Buddy, which will help cover international flights, tournament entry, food, accommodation, playing kit and equipment, as well as travel insurance. “Our goal is to make the tour to Thailand as affordable as possible for every selected player and their families, and we need the local communities at the different venues to come and support the event,” she says. Varsity Football returns with twists South Africa’s premier university football competition returns with an exciting new look as Varsity Football 2026 gets underway in August. The women’s tournament kicks-off on 1 August and will be contested over two weekends before attention shifts to the men’s competition, which runs from 7 August to 2 October. This season introduces one of the biggest changes in the tournament’s history with Varsity Football moving to Friday nights for the men’s competition. CONTINUED GROWTH Siya Noqayi, Varsity Football Code Manager, believes the continued growth of the competition reflects the increasing quality and competitiveness of university football in South Africa. “Every season Varsity Football continues to raise the standard both on and off the field. We are excited to introduce Friday night football this year where we won’t just be hosting a football tournament. We will be creating a movement. With the women’s tournament expanding its footprint and the men’s competition welcoming new teams alongside the return of familiar rivals, we are looking forward to another unforgettable season that celebrates talent, opportunity and the passion of football”. student footballers, with WSU, Wits, UL, CPUT, TUT, UJ, UP Tuks and three time champions UWC competing for the title over two action packed weekends. The men’s competition promises another fiercely contested campaign with current champions UFS returning to defend the title they claimed in memorable fashion last season beating TUT 5-4 on penalties. Joining the men’s competition this year is the University of Limpopo, while UWC makes a welcome return after missing out on last year’s tournament. NWU and CUT missed out on qualification, underlining the increasingly competitive nature of Varsity Football. Fans can also once again look forward to the #IyachesaFAN Challenge, exciting matchday activations and unforgettable campus atmospheres.
