Five peoplewere shot in Elsies River last week. Awoman wasshot and killed on the corner of Epping Avenue and Norwood Road, when the occupants of two cars were allegedly shoot at each other

Accordingtopolice spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala, the victim was declared dead on the scene, and the suspectsare yet to be arrested.

“Elsies Riverpolice registered acase of murder followingashooting incident that occurred at thecorner of Epping Avenue and Norwood Road on Tuesday, 5May, at about 13:45. Accordingtoreports, two motor vehicleswerechasing each other, and a39-year-old woman was caught in thecrossfire. Shesustained two gunshot woundstoher chest, andshe was declared dead on the scene by medical personnel.

The suspectsfled in ablue Polo GTIand a redPolo GTI,” says Gwala.

Four morepeople were shot and injured in ElsiesRiver.

Last Wednesdayaninnocent bystander was shot and killed on the corner of Jakkalsvleiand Kiiat Avenue in Bonteheuwel.Two others were wounded.

Local ward councillor, Angus McKenzie, says this senseless act of violence comes in thewakeofthe warnings that were issued regardingpossible retaliation following a killingthe previous night.

“That warning hasbecomea heartbreaking reality. Let us be clear the life lost todaywas nota gang member, but an innocentindividual who did not deserve to become avictim of thisongoing cycleofviolence. We areurgently calling for calm, vigilance,and heightened awarenessacrossthe community,”says McKenzie.

He says suspects in this shooting were swiftly caught when, through histip-off line, they received strong, credible information from residentsand eyewitnesses.

“That information was immediately relayed to our safety andsecurity teams on theground. Within minutes, they acted. The suspectvehicle was identified, stopped, andsearched. Afirearm with ammunitionwas recovered, and multiple suspects matching the provided descriptions were apprehended. All suspectshave been arrested.

“We mournthe loss of an innocent life. Butinthe midstofthis pain, the power of communitystood firm, because residents chosetospeak up, because information was sharedand because action was taken. We now have suspects in custody who we

believe may be linked to these incidents and we will do everything in our power to ensure they remain behind bars. This is what happens when acommunity refuses to be silent.Bonteheuwel showed courage,”hesaid.

Guns and access to guns has been flagged by many as the source of violence on the Flats,and Ian Cameron, Chairperson of the PortfolioCommittee on Police, says a parliamentary question of his unearthed several deeply concerning facts about recovered firearms in SouthAfrica. “I asked how many recovered firearms with legible serial numbers were found not to be recorded on the Central Firearms Registry, especially given the number of firearms used by gangs that appear never to have been legally registered. The answer was blunt: records of recovered firearms with legible serial numbers that are not on the Enhanced Firearm Registration System are not available. That is aserious problem.

“If afirearm is recovered with alegible serial number, but police cannot tell parliament whether it appears on the national firearms system, then our tracing and intelligence capability is not where it should be. The police also stated that only six unregistered firearms were recovered in the Western Cape during the reporting period. That figure needs interrogation, particularly in aprovince wheregang violence and firearm-related murders remain adaily reality,” says Cameron. More concerning, says Cameron, is the police’sanswer on tracing.

“The police says it has atracing protocol and uses INTERPOL’s iARMS system to trace firearms internationally. That is positive on paper. But when asked how many firearms had theirfull chainof custody successfully established, the police answered that no statistics have been gathered to complete anational picture of all traces conducted during investigations. That is the heart of the problem. You cannot claim to be serious about illegal firearms if you cannot measure how many recovered firearms are being traced from manufacturer, to dealer,tolawful owner, to point of loss, theft, diversion or criminal recovery. Firearm tracing is not apaperwork exercise. It is how we identify leakage points, corrupt officials, negligent institutions, trafficking routes, rogue dealers and criminal networks,” says Cameron.

Singer Robin Pieters hasasked for prayer afterbecoming asmash-and-grab victim in ElsiesRiver. Pieters says he was on his way to rehearse with afellow artist when theincident happened.

“On my way to rehearsal, while looking at thedirections on my phone to Salome’s home, Iexperienced something intense asmashand grab in Elsies River. In that moment,ayoung man took my phone, and instincttook over. Iran after him across a school field, fell, andinjured my ribs. I’m in contact with my doctor and monitoring thingsclosely.”

Pieters said that people were “incredibly kind” when he reached the place where theman had fled.

“They told me gently but firmly to leave

because it was dangerous.” He added he was not angry about the crime. ”It hurts to see how desperation can push someone to thispoint. Iwork hard so Idon’t have to live that life again, but Istill choose compassion. Ibless that young man. Ipray he finds peace, purpose, and honest work,” says Pieters. Pieters thanked the officers who stayed by his car and helped him block his phone. “Even at the end of your shift, you showed care and went above and beyond.” He added: “Life can change in an instant, but I’mstill standing. Still trusting. Still believing that something miraculous can come out of even the most chaotic moments. Please keep me in your prayers.”

Hearn, professor of sociology in Huddersfield’s Department of Social and Psychological Sciences, says: “There is nowplentyofresearchthatshows clear negative impacts of some men’sbehaviour on theenvironment andclimate; what is astonishing is how this aspect doesnot figure in mostdebate andpolicy on amore sustainable world.”

The team’s findings include that men tend to have agreater carbon footprint andgreater environmental impact through consumption, especially travel, transportation,and tourism,men tend to have lessconcern with climate change, and less willingness to change everyday practicetoameliorate it,men tend to be less ambitiousand less active in environmentalpolitics, andless supportiveofpolitical parties that work forenvironmentaljustice.

Men also tendtobemore involved in owning,managing, controlling heavy, chemical, carbon-based, industrialised agriculture, highenvironmentalimpact and extractive industries, andmilitarism, withits own devastating environmental effects.

Wesbank youth empowered through drummiessport

In thetroubled community of Wesbank, adedicated coach is using the rhythm of drummiestochangeyoung lives, but he needshelptotakehis girls to the nationals in Gauteng Wesbankisnot an easy place to grow up, and for many of its young residents, the odds are stacked against them from the start.

Butonanindoor soccer field next to a local Usave store, something remarkable is happening, thanks to one man's lifelong passion for asport widely known as drummies.

Marquin Skippers, acoach registered with theWestern ProvinceMajorettes and Cheerleading Association (WPMCA), has spent the better part of his life devoted to drummajorettes.

His love affair with the sport began at Stratford Primary School. "I fell in love with thesport since 1999 and grew up in a world of drummies everywhere,"hesays. By thetime he completed Grade 10, he was already coaching aprimary school team. In 2003, he wasformally evaluated and certified as acoach.

Four years ago, Skippers decided to bringhis passion to his own backyard. "Despite the challenges of the environment, Idecided to start ateam in my community for the love of the sport,"

achievement of earning WesternProvince colours is athree-month challenge of getting judged and wearing ablazer with pride," he says. For girls growing up in Wesbank, that blazer means the world. His squad are hoping to make the trip to Roodepoort in Gauteng to compete at the majorette national championship in July. His hopes for the experience areboth grounded and generous: "They shall enjoy being there as agroup."

But getting therecomes at asignificant cost. The total needed for the trip stands at R110 000. Skippers has been doing what he can —hosting fundraisers to bring in funds —but the mountain is steep. "I'm asking anyone to help with anything in donations for our trip,"hesays. "I would love any company to help me raise funds for nationals."

Ikneweducation could unlock opportunities.

I neverarrived at school wearing the latest fashiononcivvies day.Sometimes paying school fees felt impossible formyparents butthey never allowed our financial situation to become an excuse. Today as Iwatch learnersmaking their way to school in the morning,I cannot help but feelconcerned. On some days it is already 08:30and some are strolling to school with no sense of urgency. Some look disengaged and uninterested.It makes me wonder what haschanged. Have our young people become disconnected? Or are they simply overwhelmed by the realities they face daily? Today's learners are growing up in aworld filledwith distractions, social pressures and uncertainty. Many are exposed to unemployment, violence, povertyand social media influences that can easily make education feel less important. For some, it maybedifficult to dream about the future when survival feels like the priority. This iswhy motivation cannot come from schools alone. Parents, communities, teachers and mentors all have arole to playin shaping young minds. Children need to see examples of perseverance. They need encouragement and guidance. Most importantly, they need hope. We cannot expect young people to value education if society appears to undervalue their potential.Sometimesall it takes is one teacher, one family member or one opportunity to inspireachild.

Iwish those in power would take up that challenge. How many leadershavewalked throughthe halls of their former schools and asked themselves what they could do to create lasting change there?Build more schools, morelibraries and saferspaces for learning. Invest in these future leaders and give them areason to be excited Create opportunities that make learners eager to get to school because they can see afuture waiting for them beyond the classroom.

As Ileft the school that day, Irealised the classrooms are still filled with dreamers, children with untapped potential waiting to be nurtured. The challenge ismaking sure they do not lose sight ofthose dreams beforethey evenbegin.

The footballcommunity from the Cape Town Tygerberg Local Football Association was shocked on the passing of MogamatSalie Davids (58) from Holy Cross Soccer Club in Bellville on Friday 8May in May Davids was amuch-respected coach and over-50 player. He passed away on the field in the fixture against Fish Hoek in Bellville.

Due to his passing all fixtures of Holy Cross were cancelled over the weekend to attend his funeral in the Muslim Tradition on Saturday 9May.

Davids, known as Coach Salie amongthe juniors atHoly CrossSoccer Club, was adeeply respected memberofthe club and thebroaderfootballcommunity.

Hishumility, kindness and genuine love forthe game left a lasting impact oneveryone who hadthe privilege of knowing him,particularly the manyyoung players he coachedand mentored throughthe years.

"The past three years he played forHoly Cross while coaching the juniors. He had aheart attack just after half-time andcollapsed. There was no medics on the field and membersofthe clubtried CPR but could not save him They had to wait forparamedics to arrive tosee if theycould assist him," says his cousin Anwar Jacobs.

"Soccer washis life andhewas affectionately known as "Spyker" andplayed formanyclubs. He started hissoccer career at Baltic Wanderers andplayedfor clubs like FN Rangers, Vasco da Gama, Wanderersand Jamestown.

Whenhewas in high school, he madethe Western Provinceand SA Schools teams. He was abig

name in local football andalmost everyonefrom his era knew him "He was adiabetic andwas sufferingfrom hypertension and was on chronic medication. He was afit person andalways gave his all when playing. As a youngster he alsoplayed baseball and was involved in the Malay choirs andlovedthe coons,"says Jacobs He describes Davids as a humble person, never rude to

anyone and always ready to assist if help is needed.

"We as afamily could always depend on him. My personal feeling about the future of the o-50league is that the players should regularly get medically screened. No over 35-years-old games should just be played withoutproper trained medics on thefield to prevent asimilar situation happening on any field in the broader Cape Town.

Gamesshould be made shorter or just be played in four quarters to give the guys abit of rest during the games.

"Hislegacy is that he will always be remembered as a great and humble soccer player and coach. We, as his family would like to thank everyone for theirassistance during this time of bereavement, especially the club for theirmessages of condolences,"says Jacobs.
