Learnguitarthefun waywithEddyStrings
Known as the “Guitar Man” from Belhar, Extension 13, Eddy Strings has come a long way since the early days.
Not only has Eddy travelled the world, playing abroad, he possesses the talent to effortlessly transition between various genres With a background in jazz, this versatile guitarist can switch over to rock or reggae with the “drop of a mic”
Known for being a guitarist, teacher and producer; Eddy now adds the title “writer” to his impressive resume He recently launched his first guitar book, titled “Guitar 101: A colourful journey for beginners”
“Guitar 101 was created to give learners an experience that goes beyond traditional methods Music should be enjoyable, inclusive and inspiring This book allows students to see music in colour and truly connect with the guitar in a personal way,” says Eddy
COLOURTECHNIQUE
Over the years, Eddy has personally tried and tested this colour technique, as it aids students to understand music better, no matter their age or background
This book was born out of an idea to give every learner the confidence to start their musical journey in a fun and accessible way
This November the dream became a reality, as Eddie launched his love project This special celebration of music, creativity and the journey that brought the book to life, was showcased to the public during the launch With an amazing turnout, Eddy not only showcased the book for the first time, but entertained guests with live performances and a musical discussion, with a panel of

“We aim to provide accessible, accredited training opportunities in welding and other artisan trades, create pathways into apprenticeships, and empower communities through technical education Our mission is to replace weapons with welding machines and turn unemployed youth into skilled artisans who can contribute to building South Africa’s economy The greatest cause of poverty in our communities is the disconnect between education and employability Too many young people leave school without access to practical training or the networks needed to enter the workforce
When education does not translate into opportunity, talent is wasted “Athina’s Artistry exists to close that gap linking education with employment, skill with certification, and training with transformation We welcomes anyone who seeks to change their life through skill
This includes school leavers, unemployed youth, women entering technical fields, adults seeking reskilling and individuals looking to start over with purpose,” she says
MISSION
“Once fully registered, the our NPO will operate under the Department of Social Development’s guidelines, aligning SETA quality standards, ensuring every learner receives recognised, compliant, and transformative training
“My personal mission began more than 13 years ago, born from an educator’s promise to her learners that she would never give up on them after graduation,” she said
With experience across both the private and public education sectors, that personal commitment gradually grew into a structured movement dedicated to lifelong learning and empowerment In 2025, this vision formalised into a social enterprise with two arms a Pty Ltd and an NPO (currently in the registration process) created to expand access to meaningful skills development opportunities
“I continue to mentor former learners,
Eddy Strings with his new book.
like-minded musos "Whether you have a young child, teen or want to start learning the guitar as an adult; this book is the perfect tool for those that benefit from a more visual and hands-on approach," says Eddy
Whether you want to learn to play the guitar or know of someone that wants to start their musical journey, visit www stringsacademy co za and order your book today Eddy's final word to potential guitar players: "Let the music meet you ” . guiding them through interview preparation, connecting them with employers, and ensuring they remain jobready,” she adds
Athina’s Artistry was never about waiting for someone else to fix things, its was about action
“I couldn’t sit back and complain about what the government is or isn’t doing while our children are being lost to violence, and our youth unemployment rate stands at a staggering 46 1% (according to Statistics South Africa, 2025) Instead of turning away, I decided to turn my hands and my welding torch toward hope Even though our NPO registration is still in progress, the work has already begun
“I’ve been conducting community-based welding and life-skills training, offering mentorship, and consulting young people on how to get qualified, prepare for interviews, and enter apprenticeships and learnerships,” she said
TRAINING
While awaiting formal sponsorships and documentation, all external training is still powered by the founder
“The recognition of this commitment, including receiving the CWENA Award on 8 November 2025, reaffirms that faith in God, consistency, and love for one’s community can create real impact I believe we cannot wait for hope, we must be the hope Athina’s Artistry is already proving that when you lead with purpose, resources follow,” she said
The groundwork has been laid, the vision is alive, and the momentum is unstoppable By 2036, Athina’s Artistry envisions launching ‘Welding on Wheels’ a mobile college model that brings skills training directly to communities Instead of learners travelling long distances to attend college, the college will come to them
“My dream is to see a generation of youth who are not just qualified, but employed and communities where welding machines replace weapons where every spark in the workshop lights a future of dignity, income, and independence ”
Noarrestsyetin Delftmurder
The Western Cape's provincial police says nobody as been arrested yet after a 22-year old woman was shot in Delft last week, in a murder that is allegedly linked to extortion.
Lisand Sondlo was allegedly killed after her father, a local tavern owner, refused to pay "protection money".
Extortion is a huge issue in Cape Town, especially in the poorer, suburbs where gangs of extortionists terrorise
ShotSpotter delivers results
Four Cape Town areas with gunshot detection technology are proving their worth in tackling illegal firearms
Between April and June, ShotSpotter zones in Manenberg, Hanover Park, Nyanga and Steenberg delivered 54% of all guns recovered by City enforcement teams 31 out of 57 firearms confiscated across Cape Town
The technology zones also yielded 18 imitation and homemade firearms plus 467 rounds of ammunition
“The data underpins the value of the gunshot detection technology which enables more frequent, rapid, and precise responses,” the City said Over the past year, ShotSpotter recorded
3 893 alerts with 9 223 rounds fired a 30% drop from the previous year’s 5 770 alerts and 14 181 rounds
But crime hotspots remain troubling
Across all four areas, 40% of gunfire happened on just 20 streets per suburb In Lavender Hill, this jumped to 58%
The City hit back at critics expecting the technology to stop gang violence entirely
“ShotSpotter cannot stop a person from pulling a trigger any more than a fire detector can stop a fire from igniting What it does provide is awareness ” Officials stressed gunshot detection is one tool in a larger safety strategy alongside proactive policing and social development

Ek ‘like’ my job
Hoe stap hy?
Ek doen al hierdie dinge omdat my kop vir my sê dat ek binnekort oor hierdie kind moet skryf
