Grade 11 learners at Roosendaal Secondary School united in the spirit of Heritage Day to produce a Hollywood-style video that embodies youth, culture, transformative change, and collaboration among young people The initiative was conceived by educator Percy van Willingh, who aimed to bring the learners together to work on a project that highlights issues such as homelessness, drug abuse, bullying, and youth isolation
The learners gathered at the school to create a documentarystyle video themed "I dare to
dream"
"Our goal is to establish a safe environment for students to explore, learn, and grow However, to accomplish this, we must inspire and encourage a positive mindset and the determination to succeed, enabling them to serve as living examples of endurance, inspiration, and the courage to take a leap of faith through confidence," says Van Willingh
POSITIVEVIRTUES
Ashlynn Jantjies was assigned to participate in an active sequence choreographed by stuntman Conwill Bowie from Belhar Jantjies, a Grade 11
learner, possesses a vibrant spirit and actively participates in academic pursuits, community activities, and collaborative efforts
She characterises herself as someone who embodies positive virtues to make a meaningful impact on youth
"My involvement in this Heritage Day programme is a stepping stone to many other achievements for our youth
Although we face various challenges, our heritage must remain a focal point of our identity," Jantjies remarks
Van Willingh says the phrase "I dare to dream" signifies more than merely an activity "It represents an initiative aimed at honouring our South African culture and diversity by acknowledging and embracing the rich cultural heritage
“This day inspires South Africans to engage with their distinct traditions, explore cultures, and cultivate a sense of unity and national pride, reflecting the essence of the people, the youth, and our identity as South Africans," he says

As the final quarter of 2025 begins, Cape Town is marking a high point in its economic trajectory, with record-breaking levels of investment and job creation reinforcing its position as one of South Africa’s most dynamic urban economies, according to James Vos, Mayco member for economic growth
Speaking to business leaders in the wake of Heritage Day celebrations, Vos said the City is not only honouring its rich cultural heritage, but also celebrating an economy that has proven resilient in the face of global and domestic headwinds
“Cape Town’s economy is withstanding shocks because it is built on collaboration, sound governance, and the determination of Capetonians,” Vos told an audience of business leaders “These achievements are proof that when local government and the private sector work together, we can create jobs, attract investment, and drive innovation ”
Between July 2024 and June 2025, the City’s high-growth sector programmes, run through Special Purpose Vehicles, facilitated R4,6 billion in investment, well above the R3,8 billion target
"Job creation also far exceeded expectations, with 10 214 new jobs against a target of 2 200 A further 2 674 people were trained, more than doubling the annual target," he said
Vos noted that this represented a significant return on the City’s R51 million funding contribution for the financial year
Among the highlights were CapeBPO who created more than 9 185 new callcentre jobs and attracted R3,2 billion in investment
UVU Africa hosted 37 events reaching 5 500 people, trained township entrepreneurs, and co-launched the Biotech Growth Coalition, positioning Cape Town as a hub for health innovation GreenCape facilitated R331,8 million in green investment, created 252 jobs,
Cape Town celebrates a record investment milestone
supported nearly 80 SMMEs, and spearheaded projects in e-waste and urban waste management
Wesgro enabled 64 trade declarations and 1 639 jobs, while the Made in the Cape programme connected 245 exporters with 37 buyers across 16 countries
Vos also highlighted progress in making it easier to do business in Cape Town Through the City’s Ease of Doing Business initiative, turnaround times for water connections were reduced from 17 days to 11 days, while wayleave applications for infrastructure works now average just two to eight days
“Alongside attracting investment, we are committed to cutting red tape so businesses can grow faster,” Vos said
ENGAGINGDIRECTLYWITHBUSINESS
Vos added that his hands-on approach was vital in ensuring the City’s strategies translated into real opportunities
“I especially value engaging directly with businesses, whether on their factory floors or in their boardrooms, to see firsthand the innovation and craftsmanship driving this city forward,” he said “This also ensures that we are reaching into more sectors, unlocking further opportunities, and growing more jobs for Capetonians ”
Vos said the City was confident that Cape Town’s economy would continue to set the benchmark nationally
“Collaboration, innovation, and a passion for people lie at the heart of Cape Town’s economic story,” he said “By uniting local government and the private sector, we are setting the benchmark for building an economy that can withstand shocks and stresses, and more importantly, create prosperity that reaches every community ”

If everyone worked together the community of Bonteheuwel would be able to defeat criminals
This local ward councillor Angus Mckenzie said he believed implicitly, particularly after what he described as a “successful” crime-fighting weekend
“Our collective efforts, involving police, Metro Police and Law Enforcement, have again demonstrated the power of a strong partnership between the community and our safety agencies
EVERY TIP-OFF OR

Participants at the MOT workshop.
He appealed to community members to continue sharing tip-offs “Each bit of information helps us chip away at this problem and strengthens our ability to act The results of this weekend prove that together we are making a difference Bonteheuwel belongs to the people who love it, not to those who destroy it through drugs and crime Together we will reclaim our streets, protect our families and secure a better future for our children ”
“Acting on numerous tip-offs received from residents, our law-enforcement teams responded swiftly and decisively These coordinated responses resulted in the confiscation of various drugs as well as significant amounts of cash linked to the drug trade within our community Let me be absolutely clear, we will not stop We will not relent Our fight against drug abuse, drug merchants and drug dealers will continue with full force We are committed to creating a safer, healthier Bonteheuwel for all residents, and we will pursue every avenue to bring an end to drug abuse and the selling of drugs in our community ”
Life-skills organisation MOT SA recently hosted its third Parents’ Workshop of the year, bringing caregivers and parents from across Cape Town together to equip them with practical strategies to support their children’s emotional, social and academic growth
The workshop was held in partnership with the Positive Behaviour Intervention and Resource Centre (PBIRC) in Wynberg and supported by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), marking the first year of this exciting collaboration
The police’s Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS) were continuing their search for a Delft teenager who went missing off Bakoven h l h f S d i from rocks where a group of adults had gathered Shoreline patrols and investigations of rocks around the area showed no sign of hi d i b
The partnership with PBIRC, and particularly its Positive Behaviour Programme, also a WCED initiative, aims at empowering youth in the Metro Central District Through this programme MOT’s life-skills curriculum is being implemented across 10 schools, the same schools at which the parents’ workshops were run, including Bonteheuwel High School
The third parents’, guardians’ and caregivers’ workshop offered practical tools and strategies to support children’s emotional, social and academic growth It explored everyday challenges children face, from navigating friendships and peer pressure to coping with schoolwork and emotional ups and downs They were guided in responding thoughtfully, creating an environment in which children feel supported, understood and empowered to make positive choices One participant shared her appreciation: “Thank you, MOT team, the experience was great Thank you so much for a well-organised workshop and for your professionalism Wish more parents could join next time ” . De Kuilen High School’s u-19A soccer team capped off a remarkable season with a 1–0 win over Sinenjongo High School from Milnerton in the Cape Peninsula Knockout League (CPKL) final last week
The decisive goal, scored by Keelan Lategan, sealed a second CPKL title for the school's first team – the first being in 2023 – and underscored the school's growing reputation in school soccer
The victory completed a historic treble for the side, having claimed three major titles this year
In April, they won the Western Cape Super Soccer Schools (SSS) Tournament, where Logan Barlow was named Player of the Tournament The team went on to secure gold at the National SSS Tournament in Gqeberha in August, following the disqualification of their opponents Captain Godwin Williams received Player of the Tournament honours The team's success has been credited to dedication, teamwork, and strong leadership from coaching and support staff, including coaches Grant Joshua and Wesley Gentry, principal Herman Mellet, Head of Soccer Fatima
Duncan, u-19A team manager Jay-Lee Horne, sport organiser Gabri Spies, and the ongoing support of parents
CPKLCHAMPS
The school also celebrated the success of its u-14B team, who were crowned CPKL champions, highlighting the depth of talent and promising future of De Kuilen
soccer
Soccer was introduced at the school as recently as 2019 After the disruption of school sports due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, Wesley Gentry coached six teams in 2021 The u-19 side claimed their first CPFL title in 2023 under then-captain Reece Baker "Through every challenge, the team stood united, playing with heart, skill, and faith giving all the glory to God This year has truly placed De Kuilen on the national schools’ soccer map, and we could not be prouder," said team manager Jay-Lee Horne . St Joseph’s Intermediate Paediatric Care in Cape Town has just celebrated a remarkable milestone – 90 years of pioneering care for some of South Africa’s most medically fragile children.
Established in 1935 by five German Pallottine Missionary Sisters, St Joseph’s continues to offer a unique and irreplaceable service bridging the dangerous gap between hospital and home for children who are too ill to return home yet no longer need acute hospital care
The anniversary was marked last week with a Thanksgiving Mass in St Joseph’s chapel, attended by patients, families, staff, partners, donors, and the wider Catholic community
Bishop Sylvester David reminded guests that “the spirit of this facility rests not in its walls, but in the God who works through all who work here”
INSTITUTION’SROLE
Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, who visited ahead of the celebration, praised the institution’s critical role
“Your pioneering work aligns with our provincial goals of fostering innovation, inclusivity, and excellence in healthcare service The dedication of your team exemplifies the spirit of community and resilience that we cherish ”
Former patient Qaqamba Cuba – fondly known as Angel by everyone at St Joseph’s – was

one of the guests who joined the celebration Born with congenital scoliosis, a severe spinal deformity that led to breathing complications, Angel later required a tracheostomy to help her breathe with the aid of a ventilator
She spent eight years at St Joseph’s, where she not only received this specialised, roundthe-clock care but also attended the onsite school from Grade 3 to Grade 7 during her recovery
Now 26 and pursuing her master’s degree, Angel reflected: “The care I received here was very good I also benefited from the on-site school It’s so nice to come back and see that it’s still the same caring place ”
When 10-year-old Zachary was hit by a car, the accident left him
brain-damaged and in a coma
Doctors stabilised him, but due to bed capacity at public hospitals, referred him to St Joseph’s Intermediate Paediatric Care for restorative and rehabilitative care
His anxious parents, overwhelmed with the acuity of his condition, had no idea how to care for him at home and were relieved that there was a place for their son to receive the care he required
At St Joseph’s, Zachary spent six months receiving daily therapy, and his parents learned to manage his complex needs Slowly, he began to swallow, then move, then speak Today, Zachary is back at school and living the childhood that almost slipped away
Every year, hospitals across the Western Cape face overwhelming demand and limited bed capacity
While they provide immediate, life-saving intervention and stabilise young patients, they cannot keep children long enough to deliver the extended rehabilitative and restorative care they still require As a result, many children are referred to St Joseph’s Intermediate Paediatric Care rather than being discharged home prematurely or sent to community healthcare facilities that offer limited ongoing support
Without this crucial step of care, vulnerable children risk complications, repeated hospital readmissions, or even
preventable deaths
A comment from Raymond Foster, a grandparent of one of the young patients at St Joseph’s, emphasises its supportive role: “Our grandchild benefited from professional support and therapy that played an indispensable role in his development We ourselves also benefited from the profound guidance and care provided to us as his carers during working hours Congratulations on your 90 years and thank you for your love and endurance to see to the needs of children in need ”
It remains the only dedicated paediatric intermediate care facility in South Africa, offering 24/7 medical, nursing, and therapy support free of charge
With 175 beds and an average stay of 112 days, St Joseph’s serves around 300 children each year
Patients receive daily rehabilitation, on-site schooling, nutritional support, play and counselling therapy, while parents are trained to manage care at home when their child is discharged St Joseph’s calls on individuals, companies, and faith communities to be part of its 90year legacy of mercy and healing
Join the 9 ZERO Challenge, share the story, or leave a legacy gift because every child deserves a safe transition from hospital to home, or, where cure is not possible, compassionate care at the end of life

As Deaf Awareness Month comes to a close, Tygerberg Hospital again recently highlighted the importance of screening for hearing loss, and cochlear implantation, stating that the loss of hearing can have a profound effect on someone's life.
The provincial department of health says as a major referral centre for hearing health, the hospital plays a vital role in supporting facilities across the province to ensure that every child, from their earliest days, has the best possible start in life
“Early identification and intervention are essential By working closely with clinics and hospitals throughout the region, Tygerberg Hospital audiology department strives to ensure that children with hearing loss are diagnosed promptly and referred for the most appropriate care, an investment that changes the course of their lives,” says Jennifer Perold, coordinator and chief audiologist of the cochlear implant programme at Tygerberg Hospital
For individuals with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss who gain little benefit from hearing aids, cochlear implantation offers a life-changing solution For children, early implantation supports near-normal language development, improves learning outcomes, and facilitates integration into mainstream education For adults, implants restore access to sounds, improve speech
understanding and communication, and increase confidence in work and social situations, the department says
Beyond restoring hearing, cochlear implants can reduce feelings of isolation, enhance safety by improving environmental awareness, and promote independence for people of all ages With ongoing rehabilitation, patients are empowered to participate fully in family, education, and community life, says the department
The department says Tygerberg Hospital, in partnership with Stellenbosch University, is proud to operate South Africa's first and largest cochlear implant programme Since performing its first implant 39 years ago, the programme has helped over 1 130 people, from a fourmonth-old baby to a 90-year-old, access the gift of hearing As a referral centre, Tygerberg continues to guide and support other facilities in identifying candidates for implantation, ensuring more patients can benefit from this life-changing technology
"By starting well, detecting hearing loss early, providing timely intervention, and offering lifelong support, Tygerberg Hospital ensures that children have the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential,” Perold concluded
If you are concerned about hearing loss, visit your nearest clinic or community health centre

In a very unfortunate turn of events, the Denny’s Fresh Mushrooms Cape Town facility near Fisantekraal will close its doors before the end of January next year after being in business for 40 years.
The closure of the business, which was established in 1986, will affect 376 employees, of whom 70% is from Fisantekraal and Durbanville, says Natasha Evason, communications and investor relations manager on enquiry by TygerBurger
Libstar, of which Denny’s Fresh Mushrooms Cape Town is part of, announced the decision of the closure on 16 September at the announcement of its first-half year results
"The facility has unfortunately been operating at a sustained loss due to structural production challenges,
including rising input costs, resource constraints and biosecurity pressures
“Despite extensive negotiations, no viable commercial agreements could be secured to safeguard the site’s long-term future As a result, Libstar has commenced labour consultations regarding the closure," Evason says
"Wherever possible, Libstar is working to absorb staff into other business units and is engaging transparently with stakeholders to support employees and the surrounding farming community," she says Charl de Villiers, chief executive officer
of Libstar, says closing the facility has been an incredibly difficult, but necessary decision given the site’s ongoing losses and the structural pressures that have made its recovery unviable
"Our priority is to support our people through this transition, while ensuring continuity of mushroom supply for our customers," De Villiers says
Their fresh mushroom facility in Johannesburg will continue to operate, supplying Denny’s national volumes
"While this site can meet ongoing market demand, the fresh mushrooms business remains under long-term review as we sharpen our focus on value-added food categories
Libstar remains committed to engaging openly with employees, customers, and industry stakeholders throughout this process,” he says
The Denny fresh mushroom farm in KwaZulu-Natal was destroyed in a fire in September 2022 and the assets will also be sold

Following a sold-out premiere last year, Orpheus McAdoo returns to the Artscape Theatre from 21 October to 2 November
Written and directed by David Kramer, this vibrant musical tells the true story of Orpheus McAdoo and his Virginia Jubilee Singers—African-American performers who captivated South African audiences in the 1890s.
At the heart of the production is Cape Town Opera soloist Conroy Scott, whose commanding performance as McAdoo brings both vocal power and emotional depth.
He is joined by Brittany Smith as Mattie Allen,
along with a dynamic ensemble that combines opera talent with seasoned stage actors, creating a richly layered theatrical experience
Blending American spirituals, ragtime, folk, and South African influences, the musical offers a soulful journey through a little-known chapter of local history Kramer’s script mixes historical accuracy with creative storytelling, highlighting the complexities faced by McAdoo and his troupe as black performers navigating fame, identity, and race in colonial South Africa. The show moves effortlessly between sweeping choral numbers and intimate personal moments,
anchored by spirituals once born of hardship and now sung in celebration. Audiences can expect a stirring combination of music, history, and heartfelt storytelling.

Kaartjies kos R180 by Quicket Kontak Francien du Toit by 082 553 1551 met navrae.

Opera UCT brings a glittering twist to Johann Strauss II’s beloved operetta Die Fledermaus this October, celebrating both the composer’s 200th birthday and World Opera Day in a production bursting with couture, comedy and charisma.
Directed by Christine Crouse, this isn’t your grandmother’s operetta. With bold costumes, cheeky storytelling and Strauss’s unforgettable waltzes and arias including the famous “Mein Herr Marquis” (The Laughing Song) the production promises a feast for the senses. The show’s centrepiece, a lavish party scene in Act 2, sets the stage for a night of theatrical revelry
In true Fledermaus fashion, audiences are encouraged to dress the part especially on Gala Night, Saturday 25 October Masks are optional but absolutely encouraged, so channel your inner masquerader and join Cape Town’s fashionistas and opera glitterati for an evening of mischief and elegance
For the uninitiated, an operetta is opera’s lighter, flirtier cousin packed with humour, dance, and dazzling music. It’s a perfect introduction for newcomers, and a delight for seasoned operagoers. Celebrated fashion designer Gavin Rajah brings theatrical flair to the stage with daring, contemporary silhouettes and clever bat-inspired motifs (a nod to the title Die Fledermaus means “The Bat” in German), perfectly paired with Allegra Bernacchioni’s fresh and stylish set design
Musical direction is by Jeremy Silver, head of Opera UCT, who says: “Fledermaus is pure, fizzy fun, but vocally and theatrically demanding. The cast has risen to the challenge in spectacular fashion.” . Tickets range from R100 to R500 and are available at Webtickets.

Nee Selfone? Tablette in skole?

A quiet concern is growing among community leaders and parents in Kuils River: a noticeable lack of structured activities and positive outlets for the area’s youth
This observation points to a deeper issue of youth inactivity, which community advocates warn is a fertile ground for increased crime, antisocial behaviour, and long-term social challenges
On any given afternoon groups of young people can be seen with nowhere to go and little to do While not inherently problematic, this idleness, experts say, creates a vacuum that can easily be filled by negative influences
When young people are disengaged, without positive channels for their energy and creativity, they become vulnerable Boredom can quickly turn into mischief, petty crime, or worse, as they seek belonging and excitement elsewhere We are seeing the early signs of this and it is a cycle we must break The dangers extend beyond crime Inactivity contributes to poor physical health, mental health struggles like depression and anxiety, and a pervasive sense of hopelessness about the future The result is not only a threat to the safety of the community but also a tragic waste of potential talent and ambition
Whose responsibility is it to address this?
While local government and non-profit organisations strive to make an impact, their resources are stretched thin There is a growing consensus that a crucial partner is missing from the equation: local business
Businesses in Kuils River can no longer afford to focus solely on their bottom line while the community around them faces a dire need The health of a business is intrinsically tied to the health of its community A community plagued by crime, hostility,
The International Day of Older People is observed on 1 October each year On 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly designated 1 October as the International Day of Older Persons This was preceded by initiatives such as the Vienna international Plan of Action on Ageing, which was adopted by the 1982 World Assembly on Ageing and endorsed later that year by the UN General Assembly The holiday was observed for the first time on 1 October 1991
In 1991, the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Principles for Older Persons
In 2002, the Second World Assembly on Ageing adopted The Political Declaration and the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing to respond to the opportunities and challenges of population ageing in the 21st century and to promote the development of a society for all ages
The number of older people (defined as those aged 65 years or older) tripled from around 260 million in 1980 to 761 million in 2021 Between 2021 and 2050, the global share of the older population is projected to increase from less than 10% to around 17% In societies with aging populations, it becomes imperative to adjust to the increasing number of elderly individuals who possess a diverse range of functional capacities
The capability to carry out essential functions and partake in everyday activities is influenced not solely by an individual's inherent capacity but also by the social and physical environments in which they reside Supportive environments such as family friends churches and local government play a pivotal role in assisting older persons to maintain their activity levels and independence as they progress in age Older Persons Week is celebrated from 26 September to 2 October this year
Spoil grandpa and grandma by visiting or phone them If they stay far away video chat with them But what about an “appreciation day”? Celebrate by having dinner together Maybe you can show them something new on the cellphone Most important, tell them regularly that you love them and pray for them every day

‘n Ope brief aan die Stad Kaapstad
and a disengaged youth is bad for business It can deter customers make it difficult to attract and retain employees, and create an environment of instability that stifles economic growth
The notion of corporate social responsibility must move from being a peripheral PR exercise to a core business strategy We are not asking for handouts We are asking for partnership We need businesses to come on board and be genuine partners in community development
This partnership can take many forms: sponsoring local sports teams funding after-school art and music programmes, offering their premises for workshops, providing mentors, or creating dedicated internship and learnership opportunities for school-leavers The investment needed is not solely financial; expertise, time, and infrastructure are equally valuable
The long-term payoff of such investment is immense By helping to create a network of youth centres, sports leagues, and skills-development workshops to mention just a few, local businesses would be investing in a future generation of employees, customers, and community leaders They would help foster a culture of positivity, inclusivity, and pride, directly countering the allure of crime and antisocial behaviour
Transforming Kuils River from a potential hotspot of youth discontent into a hub of opportunity requires a collective effort
The youth need guidance and outlets, the community needs safety and hope Local businesses have a unique power and resources to help provide both The time for waiting is over The call is for Kuils River’s business community to step up and become the architects of a safer, more vibrant, and prosperous future for all FEZEKILE COTANI, Soneike, Kuils River
