Sarah Strauss, principal of Ravensmead Educare Centre (part of the GROW Educare Centres network), has overcome near-impossible challenges to create a safe Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre in Ravensmead, where children from disadvantaged homes can receive nutritional meals and quality schooling every day

Thanks to partnerships with organisations such as GROW Educare Centres, The Sprightly Seed and Breadline Africa, this centre is on a journey to become a five-star centre

The Ravensmead Educare Centre joined the GROW network for preschools in 2019 GROW works with Strauss to improve the quality of education that takes place in her classrooms continuously and to improve the ECD’s financial sustainability

Thanks to the generous support of MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet the preschool started a thriving food garden with The Sprightly Seed Strauss secured JoJo tanks and a generator and painted and repaired large parts of the school She is paying off R500 000 in municipal debt (which she inherited from the previous tenant) She still has R86 000 left to pay before water and electricity are reconnected

In 2022 GROW helped Strauss connect with new partners and she received a jungle gym from Breadline Africa

over an abandoned ECD building in the community and turn it into a safe ECD Centre,” said Strauss

“The building had no water and no electricity It was a dump site and unsafe The situation was very challenging I had to find money to remove the rubbish, paint the building, repair the doors and windows and fix the plumbing ”

Thanks to the previous principal not paying the bills, the building had a municipal debt of over R500 000, which Strauss had to take on This means no water and no electricity services will be supplied until she can pay it off Incredibly, after only three years, she has covered most of the debt and has only R86 000 left to pay

“I have managed to get two JoJo tanks and a generator for the school to supply the water and electricity that we need,” she said

“We painted the school and repaired all the doors and windows, even the roof I built a wall around the school We have a veggie garden where we harvest our daily food, thanks to generous support from The Sprightly Seed and sponsors such as MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet The environment is safer now, and our centre is compliant We have six qualified teachers and six assistant teachers

A woman from Roosendal, Delft has swept her way into a movie literally! She got the surprise of her life when she inadvertently walked onto a film set on Saturday 16 August

The film in production was a psychological drama entitled The Meeting Kaylin Barnes (30) was engaged in her daily work routines, unaware she was about to enter a film set in operation, in Roosendal itself, and then inadvertently became an extra

“My team and I were simply sweeping the streets in Delft’s main road,” she related, “and while I noticed something unusual, with bright lights and someone yelling ‘action!’, I initially did not see the cameras I was unaware that a film production was taking place until I spotted a camera aimed directly at me while I was joking with my work mates, and that’s when I realised I was part of it ”

Barnes believes things happen for a reason and entering a film set may have sparked something extraordinary

“Delft is often viewed in a negative light, yet there are positive developments I never thought I would ever meet the famous actor Jeraido Roman, nor did I think he would be so tall, and yet I had seen him in a few movies ”

She has set her sights on completing her schooling before applying to become a law-enforcement officer, aiming to serve as a role-model for all mothers by demonstrating that pursuing a goal is a worthwhile endeavour “Taking small steps is essential; it is important to learn and educate oneself Motivating a younger and vibrant generation requires significant effort ”

The Meeting narrates the tale of Sebbie, who grapples with the betrayal of his

friends and wife while managing a highpressure, stressful and toxic job This situation ultimately leads Sebbie down a dark path, transforming him into a dangerous and mentally-unstable killer, who calls a meeting to confront those who have wronged him

The film is set to be released on October 30 and features Tyrique Williams, Glemorne Jacobs, Miche Siegelaar, Cameron Rass, Roman and Nicole Barkhuizen

Authorities urge caution as bird flu hits seabirds

KAILINDANIELS

KAILIN DANIELS@NOVUSMEDIA CO ZA

Since early July, a new outbreak of high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) has been confirmed in wild seabirds across the Western Cape

These are the first wild–bird detections in the province since April 2024 The public is therefore encouraged not to touch sick or dead birds and to report them to the authorities

Wild seabirds infected with HPAI often develop neurological signs such as tremors, head twitches and seizures Although HPAI occasionally infects mammals and humans, the risk to the public remains very low when basic precautions are followed

WHATISHPAI?

"High pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI), also known as bird flu, is a viral disease that causes rapid, severe illness in birds

“The type of HPAI affecting seabirds in South Africa is officially known as H5N1 clade 2 3 4 4b," the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob) says

Asked which birds have been affected, Sanccob says at the beginning of August, most of the affected wild birds were Hartlaub’s gulls

"Cases have also been reported in Great White Pelicans, Grey-headed Gulls, Kelp gulls, Whitebreasted cormorants, Crowned Cormorants and Sacred Ibises Domestic chickens and ducks have also been affected "

Sanccob says they have played a leading role in response to this crisis

"Our priorities are: keeping our seabird hospitals safe from infection, supporting conservation authorities with wild responder efforts, monitoring the impact on wild birds, and ensuring good animal welfare

“Our actions include surveillance, working with State Veterinary Services and conservation authorities to monitor and manage the disease, advising on response procedures, educating rehabilitation centres, veterinarians, and first responders, and arranging humane euthanasia for birds showing clinical signs "

HOWCANTHEPUBLICTELLIFABIRDHASHPAI?

HPAI can only be confirmed through a laboratory (PCR) test At this time, any bird displaying any of the following signs should be suspected to be affected by the disease:

. Twitches or seizures;

. Unusual tameness;

. Cloudy eyes;

. Inability to walk or fly away

HOWCANTHEPUBLICHELP?

If you encounter a sick or dead wild bird, please report it Do not touch, feed, or attempt to rescue the bird yourself

Observe from a safe distance and record the following:

. The exact location (GPS coordinates are best, or an exact street address You can record the exact location on a smartphone mapping app, WhatsApp location pins work well);

. The date and time;

. Species (if you can identify it), clinical signs (tremors, unusual tameness, cloudy eyes), the number of birds affected;

. Take a video and photograph of the bird;

. Report immediately via one of these channels: For seabirds: Sanccob: 021 557 6155 (landline) / 078 638 3731 (cellphone and WhatsApp)

. For birds that are not seabirds: Use the DFFE Avian Influenza Reporting Tool: https://arcg is/1585011 Sadly, affected birds cannot be treated The authorities will assist with arranging for humane euthanasia

PROTECTYOUSELF

. Protecting yourself, your family and pets

. Do not handle sick or dead birds without authorisation

Keep pets away from dead or sick birds

Keep your dog on a leash when you are visiting the beach

. Keep domestic poultry and pet birds away from wild birds

. Seek medical advice if you develop flulike symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat) within 10 days of contact with a sick or dead bird, and inform your healthcare provider about possible HPAI exposure

WHATIFIHAVETOUCHEDASICKORDEADBIRD?

. Remove any droppings (guano) or other bodily fluids from the affected bird using a disposable paper towel

. Disinfect your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser

. Disposable items that were in contact with the bird can be packaged in a plastic bag and sent with the bird for safe disposal when collected

. Surfaces should be cleaned with soap and water, then disinfected with a diluted household bleach solution (120ml of bleach per litre of water, 30ml per cup of water) Wash and disinfect your hands again after cleaning

. Change your clothes and wash your hair before making any contact with domestic birds

. Any clothing exposed to a potentially affected bird should be washed normally and dried in the sun or in a tumble-dryer

Newby-lawtoenable affordableflatsinCT

New land-use rights to build affordable rental flats in identified neighbourhoods with highest demand in Cape Town will be effective as from 1 September, affording thousands more to make the leap from informal housing to City rental flats.

This after the revised Municipal Planning Bylaw (MPBL) was gazetted on Friday 8 August A number of changes to the bylaw will make it easier to build and develop in the City

AFFORDABLEHOUSING

These additional land-use rights will enable micro-developers to deliver affordable housing in townships, informal and lower-income suburbs at a far faster rate

. New provisions will see incentive overlay zonings for development focus areas in Athlone, Maitland, Parow/Elsies River, Bellville and Diep River This zoning assign additional and enhanced development rights to properties that fall within certain areas in these overlay zonings

. Additional use rights for Residential Zoning include affordable rental flats, supplementary dwelling units and place of instruction

. An affordable rental flat is a new additional use right to enable the development of small scale affordable rental accommodation in identified areas

The number of small-scale affordable rental units on a single property may not

exceed eight units plus a dwelling house, or 12 units if there is no dwelling house on the land

. New additions under Section 135 allow the City to impound moveable property that is being used for illegal building or demolition work if an order to stop work is being disobeyed This amendment intends to address the challenge of owners and contractors continuing illegal work without tangible consequences

. Single residential zoning is renamed "Residential Zoning" (R1) and provides for single-family dwelling houses and additional use rights in low- to mediumdensity residential neighbourhoods

. Amendments to the emergencyhousing provisions, now called "temporary-disaster housing", under Section 68 to enable the City to provide temporary housing on land that may not be zoned for such purpose for a period of 12 months without needing to undertake a public participation process beforehand if it is reasonable and justifiable, and complies with the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act The amendment allows for those who are left homeless due to emergencies such as fires and floods to be temporarily relocated to an alternative site in a timeous manner

. Amendments under Section 111 to allow the City to use email as the method of contacting and notifying interested and affected parties; parties must provide the City with their email addresses and update these; and anyone who doesn't have access to email may apply for notification by other means If a resident already has their latest email address with the City, they do not have to update it again

. A new rectification chapter combines the existing regularisation provisions with new revocation and amendment provisions to provide an internal remedy for irregular decisions

PUBLIC-PARTICIPATION

Mayco member for spatial planning and environment Eddie Andrews said the City followed an extensive public-participation process, including a call for input prior to the drafting of the bylaw proposals

The 90 days of public participation in 2024 included public meetings, both in-person and online, and various engagements with residents and interested stakeholders

"The amended bylaw refines planning processes, offers greater clarity and strengthens our ability to promote social and economic development," Andrews said

"It also gives greater effect to policies such as the Municipal Spatial Development Framework and related district and local frameworks "

This year's concert, HearUs, A celebration of Sound, the third annual concert, will be held on Saturday 6 September at the Endler Hall in Stellenbosch

The mission of HearUs is to secure financial sustainability of all cochlear implant patients, who are in financial need to maintain their cochlear implant functionality, which is a lifelong journey, explains dr Sucari Vlok, a radiologist and clinical trainer at the University of Stellenbosch, Tygerberg Hospital

The programme for this year's fundraiser features the Heydeburg Symphony Orchestra, and the soloists are Chris van Straten (clarinet), Etienne van der Walt (tenor), Dumisa Masoka (tenor), Alida Scheepers (soprano), José Dias (piano) and Mario Nell (organ) Vlok, a fellow organiser, says they are delighted to have the Stellenbosch Youth Orchestra on board and several cochlear implant recipients who will also participate

THINKING OUT LOUD

When goodbye comes too soon

It is a strange, almost unreal feeling to watch someone you love endure a grief so deep it seems to swallow them whole Two weeks ago, I watched my fiancé lose his mother, and I felt a pain unlike any I have ever known

It was not my mother, not my family, yet the weight of it pressed on me, leaving a hollowness I had never experienced before I wanted to reach out, to say the perfect words, to somehow ease the ache, but grief is not something that can be fixed with words And sympathy, however heartfelt, sometimes feels hollow when the loss is not your own

I have been blessed to still have both my parents I have hugged them, laughed with them, shared the ordinary chaos of everyday life, and perhaps taken it all for granted Watching my fiancé navigate a world without his mother was a sudden, jarring reminder of how fragile life truly is Death does not send warnings, it does not schedule its arrivals at convenient times It comes uninvited, and the void it leaves is vast and echoing

How can you tell a child that some people leave forever, that no one can bring them back? His world of stability and routine was shaken, and I could feel the heartbreak in every tremor of his voice

We hugged, we whispered, we repeated that heaven was a special place, and yet, the simplicity of his understanding made my own emotions even more complicated

How fortunate are those of us who still have mothers? To hear their voices, to feel their embrace, to know their love is something that should never be taken lightly

WEMUSTCHERISH THETIMEWEHAVE WITHTHOSEWELOVE

Over the past week, I saw a man strong, capable, and loving confront the unimaginable: the absence of the one person who has been a constant presence in his life since birth His grief was raw and unfiltered, spilling into every corner of the room and touching everyone near him I wanted to comfort him, to hold him, to take away the sorrow, but I could only be there, quiet, present, a steady hand and listening heart

The pain was multiplied when I had to explain to our three-year-old that his “Ma” had gone to heaven The innocence of a child makes grief even more poignant His small face scrunched with confusion and disbelief “No,” he said repeatedly, “she went to work and will be back ”

Yet life is fleeting In one week, a life can change completely

Death is not a distant concept; it is a reality we cannot predict, and the reminder is both sobering and urgent: we must cherish the time we have with those we love I have learned, in watching my fiancé grief, that love is not diminished by loss; it is magnified Memories become sacred, every shared laugh, every quiet conversation, every simple gesture is etched more deeply into the heart And while sympathy can never replace presence, compassion, patience, and listening become small acts of sanctuary for those enduring the storm of grief

So this week has been devastating, yes, but it has also been a lesson: to hold those we love a little closer, to speak words that matter, to celebrate life in all its fragile beauty The loss we mourn today reminds us that tomorrow is not guaranteed, and it challenges us to live fully, to love fully, and to treasure the people who fill our lives with meaning

Grief is heavy, but so too is love And in the quiet spaces of sorrow, it is love that keeps us tethered to hope, to each other, and to the memory of those who are gone too soon -KAILINDANIELS

NORWAY TAKES GOLD HOME ON THE DAY

Cape Town Spurs were crowned this year's Bayview FC u-16 Youth Cup after defeating a spirited Antalyaspor JPM 2-1 under the floodlights at Athlone Stadium on Saturday 16 August. It was rather a moment to remember for the Parow-based outfit, after falling at the last hurdle against Ubuntu FC last year

Other big winners on the day were Norway Park, Woodlands United, D6 Mitchells Plain and Lentegeur FC; they beat PPG Langa, Heath Athletic AFC, Pioneer Sport Club and Southampton FC, respectively Spurs lifted the Platinum Cup, with Norway Park taking the Gold Cup home while Woodlands claimed Silver D6

Mitchells Plain took the Wagiet Cup and Lentegeur Bronze In the only ladies' match of the day, Rygate Invitational Ladies locked horns with Mitchells Plain LFA ladies The two sides played a 1-1 stalemate An elated tournament organiser and Bayview FC chair Mark Rodrigues hailed the event He thanked all the sponsors, teams and supporters for their commitment and support in making the tournament one of Cape Town's top sporting events "This was a very special year for us, not only because the finals

were played at the Athlone Stadium, but it is also a huge milestone for the team We are celebrating our 20th anniversary," said Rodrigues

He said this year's venue elevated the tournament to new heights and gave people from across the province an opportunity to witness young soccer talent on display The tournament also gave the players a chance to play on a proffessional pitch

"This means if you dream it you can do it Playing at Athlone Stadium is not something many of our young footballers

get to do in their lifetime This gives them an opportunity to be part of something special," he said Rodrigues described the occasion as "very special" and an the journey to Athlone Stadium as "emotional" "It was not an easy journey There were too many obstacles but the support from everyone has been amazing This is not about people It is about giving the younsters an opportunity to showcase their talent "

He added that preparations were already underway for next year's tournament "We've launched a platform for a great tournament moving forward We have started with plans for next year and hope to make it even better
