The Community Development Food Gardens Project consists of 10 community food gardens, which are at different stages of development in areas such as Nyanga, Langa, Delft, Crossroads, Bonteheuwel, Mitchell’s Plain, Atlantis and Philippi It was launched at the Masithembele Food Garden in Delft, one of the community sites already making strides in this space

UWCmournsliterary legend,ZoëWicomb
ASouth African literary icon, who put Cape Town on the world map through her stories alone, has passed away
Acclaimed novelist and shortstory writer Prof Zoë Wicomb, who died on Tuesday 14 October in the United Kingdom leaves a remarkable legacy
It also includes a distinguished academic career, as professor of literature at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) during the post-apartheid era before moving to Scotland, where she taught at the University of Strathclyde until her retirement
The UWC community was mourning the loss of one of its most distinguished alumni; born in Namaqualand in 1948, she was part of the very first generation of UWC students in the late 1960s and early ’70s who also included late Rector Prof Brian O’Connell
“Her work has put our communities and experiences on the literary map globally,” said Prof Fiona Moolla, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at UWC, who announced Wicomb’s death
FROMNAMAQUALANDTO
INTERNATIONALRENOWN
Wicomb’s journey from the Northern Cape to becoming one of South Africa’s most celebrated authors is an inspiring one
p g g up in apartheid South Africa, became essential reading and is still studied by students at UWC today
She went on to write several acclaimed novels, including David’s Story (2000), Playing in the Light (2006), October (2014) and, most recently, Still Life (2023)
Wicomb was a teacher who never forgot her roots After completing her PhD she returned to UWC’s English Department in the post-apartheid era before relocating to Glasgow, Scotland
RECOGNITIONANDAWARDS
Wicomb’s talent was recognised internationally, receiving as she did the prestigious Donald
Windham-Sandy M Campbell Literature Prize in 2013, which cemented her reputation as one of the finest contemporary authors
Her work fearlessly examined the complexities of apartheid, colonialism and post-apartheid South Africa, giving voice to experiences that had long been silenced
“Her connection to UWC brings immense pride to our institution, and her legacy will continue to impact students, scholars and readers worldwide ”

Locally-produced movie
The Meeting will premiere on 30 October on the Red Moon Production's YouTube channel and Tubi TV. This psychological thriller, crafted by filmmaker Nic Matthee, who wrote and directed it, will be showcased at the 67th Zinebe Documentary and Short-film Festival in Spain from 21 to 28 November, catering for amateur, emerging and professional filmmakers globally
CASTMEMBERS
The cast was recently interviewed on DStv's channel 263 on the talk show EKSê, in which they expressed their enthusiasm for the upcoming release, which will highlight their hard work in representing the Cape Flats positively on the international stage
"As an actress from Ravensmead I feel the Cape Flats is often depicted as fractured," said actress Nicole Barkhuizen "However, when creative minds collaborate effectively we can alter that stereotype through our God-given talents and provide our youth with a positive perspective on rare opportunities transformed into possibilities."
Matthee developed the film concept
THE FILM FOLLOWS SEBBIE DE KOCK, WHO EXPERIENCES BLACKOUTS
in April, after which it was introduced at a free acting class that subsequently evolved into a film production, and filming took place from 28 June to 6 September Most of the filming took place in winter, contributing to the dark atmosphere of the production.
"There were numerous challenges, ranging from experiencing prosthetic film make-up to using a prop gun," actor Cameron Rass related, "as well as the taste of fake stage blood and performing various scenes.
“Most of the training occurred on the day of filming, making it both exhilarating and exhausting, but it was an invaluable experience I may be the shortest member of the cast, but I strive to make a significant impact with my performance I hope to channel the same energy into my community to create a larger impact."
BACKGROUND
The film tells the story of Sebbie de Kock, who suffers from peculiar blackouts that escalate into episodes of hallucinations.
He begins to suspect his sister's
betrayal and his wife's infidelity, as well as his friends conspiring against him. This culminates in Sebbie calling a meeting that leads to deadly repercussions in a courtroom-like confrontation, where the murders he commits are the outcome of his imagination.
"I believe the film contains relatable elements drawn from real-life experiences," actress Glemorene Jacobs pointed out
“The film raises considerable awareness, and I am pleased to have been part of this journey, hoping it will empower women, mothers and fathers to realise their strength to overcome challenges."
Matthee has gained international acclaim in Turkey, Arizona, USA, and Berlin, Germany for both his film and non-profit performing-arts community work and is
renowned for his action films. However, shifting his focus to a psychological theme may represent a new direction.
The filmmaker is also preparing to write and direct a film entitled Die Swart Kat, which serves as a reboot or remake of a 1986 South African superhero television series of the same name
He hoped The Meeting with all its components, would showcase the creative impact and talent the Cape Flats had to offer on a global scale
Laugh, dance, and sing along with Opera UCT’s ‘Die Fledermaus’
Opera and fun don’t always get invited to the same party People imagine serious faces, gold curtains and arias that last longer than a Cape Town cold front
But Opera UCT’s Die Fledermaus is the opposite: it’s fizzy, flirty and gloriously extra the kind of night out where you dress up, laugh out loud, and nudge the person next to you because yes, that just happened.
This production is bang-up to date: the famous Act II party has been moved to a Cape-based jazz nightclub all shadows, delicious music and latenight swagger
The costumes are street-to-salon chic (masks welcome), the pace is brisk, and the vibe is “friends’ night out ” not “whisper and behave”
Worried about language? Don’t be The music is sung in German, the dialogue is in English, and surtitles keep everyone in the loop (including multilingual moments so no one gets left behind)
If you can follow a meme, you can follow this plot: mistaken identities, cheeky pranks, stolen kisses, and champagne-fuelled chaos.
That old myth that opera is for older, wealthy,
mostly privileged crowds? Not this one
The cast is young the staging is proudly Cape Town, and the energy is for everyone date-night people, fashion people, music people, first-timers, and yes, families (under 18s are free just book on Webtickets to reserve seats).
Think of Die Fledermaus as your favourite night out with better melodies
It’s the same delicious mischief from rom-coms and club stories, just sung by voices that can lift the roof and a band that can swing.
Come as you are or come extra. Either way, you’ll leave smiling and maybe humming.
Opera UCT’s Die Fledermaus runs at the Baxter Theatre from Thursday 23 to Sunday 26 October
.Tickets range from R100 to R500 (u-18 free but need to book). Book at Webtickets

MAUR CIA PETERSEN@NOVUSMEDIA CO ZA
Oxford University Press South Africa (Oupsa) has launched a groundbreaking Foundation Phase textbook series designed to reflect the country’s rich diversity whilst ensuring all learners can access quality educational materials.
The new series prioritises inclusive representation and has been developed in line with Department of Basic Education guidelines for bias-free learning materials that celebrate South Africa’s multicultural society
In a significant step towards educational equality, Oupsa has introduced Braille editions of its Aweh! reading series specifically for blind and low-vision learners Sets of these tactile textbooks are being donated to Athlone School for the Blind in Bellville
“In the early years of learning, what children read and see shape how they understand themselves and the world That’s why inclusive content cannot be optional or superficial It must be intentional,” said Sharon Villette, Schools Publisher at Oupsa
The publisher has developed characters that South African children can identify with, either as reflections of themselves or their classmates, moving beyond tokenistic representation to authentic diversity
Oupsa’s initiative extends beyond textbook donations The company is making its intellectual property available at no cost to accredited producers of Braille resources, demonstrating a practical commitment to inclusive access
“Adding Braille is a practical example of how we move from inclusive representation to inclusive access It’s one more way to ensure no learner is left behind on the literacy journey,” Villette explained
The textbooks celebrate diversity across culture, language, gender, ability and belief, ensuring that educational materials reflect the reality of South African classrooms
The Foundation Phase series represents a significant shift in educational publishing, with Oupsa positioning itself as a leader in inclusive education
The initiative addresses long-standing educational disparities by ensuring that learning materials are accessible to all children, regardless of ability
DONATION ENSURES BLIND LEARNERS READ SAME MATERIAL AS PEERS
“The narratives we publish help shape the fabric of society We believe that educational materials must celebrate real diversity and be designed so every child can access them,” said Villette
FILLINGGAPS
Shamece Pillay, who was the first initiator to reach out for help, is also a parent who has a 10-year-old girl at the school
According to her the blind children are desolated Pillay shares her story about her 10-year-old daughter who was born blind She says to them it was a shock at the time To her the journey is continually teaching them things
Pillay says she started at Athlone School for the Blind, but even before that, when she was at her previous school, “they could see the gaps from what she has access to [compared] to what our sighted children have access to Because she's the last-born of five kids, doing those comparisons are really heartbreaking "
Pillay adds: "I think for me, with this project, the only goal was to bridge that gap in the resources So, Oxford University Press has obviously been great in the partnership because they have access to licensing of these titles And that's one of the other issues that's why our kids don't have resources, because there s such a legal aspect to the licensing issue that has still not been resolved
"Our kids need to have access My goal was for my child to read exactly the same thing that another Grade 4 learner, another Grade 3 learner in any other school is reading, because that was the big problem "
GRATEFUL
Principal Gail Williams thanked Oxford University Press for their generous contributions
"We are deeply grateful to Oxford University Press for their generous donation of the'Aweh! reading series to our school This gesture is both meaningful and transformative for our learners
"Athlone School for the Blind was founded in 1927 and has been a centre for inclusive education, serving visually impaired and blind learners for nearly a century We focus on nurturing students with unique challenges and potential "
"Resources such as the Aweh! reading series are more than just tools for literacy; they are stepping stones towards a future of opportunity, confidence, and independence ” Williams says this donation comes at a crucial time as their school faces economic hardships
"Most learners come from socioeconomically disadvantaged families where parents cannot afford books, and the school operates with limited financial resources Your generosity is not just seen, it is felt You have given us something we could not have afforded on our own, helping to close a critical gap in our learners' education You have given them access ”

Bunny crisis in Durbanville
Durbanville has sadly become a known dumping ground for domestic rabbits
In recent weeks, more than 24 abandoned bunnies have had to be rescued sterilised and cared for to prevent further breeding
Why this matters:
.Pet rabbits are domesticated animals, not wild They cannot survive on their own
.Many are run over by cars in neighbourhood streets
. They are easy prey and are attacked or eaten by dogs, cats birds – and even people
.Without care they get sick and die from untreated illnesses
.They suffer in extreme heat or cold, without proper water food and shelter
.Some people view them as pests, leading to them being poisoned or even shot
Dumping a rabbit is not only cruel it creates an end-
less cycle of suffering breeding and more abandoned animals
What you can do instead:
.Adopt don’t shop – and always sterilise your pets
.If you can no longer care for your bunny please contact a rabbit rescue or animal shelter as a last resort
.Rehome responsibly: post on South African bunny groups and rescue networks like Bunny Huggers SA and Bunnies South Africa
Abandoning your pet is not only cruel, it is illegal under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962
Let’s protect our bunnies and stop the cycle of dumping in Durbanville
