The community of Silversands held a prayer walk on Saturday to pray about the escalating crime situation in the area
Recently a spike in robberies, breakins and murders have sparked the community into action with the election of street representatives to monitor and act on crime It is the group of these representatives that is organising the prayer walk
Gretchen Buys (pseudonym), spokesperson for the group, says the situation in Silversands is growing worse by the day "New information has come to light these past few days that gangsters from other areas are coming to hide guns and sell it in the area We have breakins mostly done by the same people each week and nothing is being done They get arrested and released within hours, just to do it again The burnt out crèche called Stepping Stones seems to be a hideout as well and we are having trouble finding the owners to clear up that space It is just a breeding place for crime Even school children hide out there If the owners can
contact us we will appreciate it," says Van Heerden
Van Heerden says they are a litte disappointed in how many people attended the prayer walk, but that will not discourage them "Silversands need to surrender all to God in its fight against crime," she says
The provincial serious violent crime unit of the police is seeking the assistance of the public to identify a person who can assist them with their investigation into three separate incidents of robbery in the Kleinvlei area The man is believed to be in the Eerste River and surrounding areas Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts or can identify the person is kindly requested to contact the investigating officer, detective Sgt Donovan Petersen on 084 684 0909 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or alternatively drop an anonymous tip-off on the #MySAPSApp

The provincial education department says matric balls are extra curricular events, after a school in Belhar decided to cancel their school's event
Excelsior High School cancelled their annual matric ball allegedly because of the behaviour of some learners
Parents were informed on 15 August, after the farewell was initially confirmed in July
Parent Yolanda Johnson says she has a heavy heart
"The school will not be having its annual matric-ball dance based on the issue of 30 learners not attending class and bunking classes on a regular basis
“Now, I understand why they are not allowed to attend the matric ball, however, what I cannot comprehend is why the 220 other learners who have worked and put in the effort against all odds have to suffer the same consequences as the 30 learners
This is unfair and really uncalled for
"As a parent/guardian I would like this matter to be looked into urgently as parents just received a letter via WhatsApp on Friday stating that the matric ball has been cancelled
“What about the money of the parents who already made deposits or already paid for everything as the matric ball was confirmed?
“Whataboutthemoneyofthe parentswhoalreadymadedeposits
oralreadypaidforeverythingasthe matricballwasconfirmed?
- Yolanda Johnson
“Are the parents going to be reimbursed, because this is a big loss for them?
“What about parents who took out loans for this big achievement for their child? I hope there can be a solution to the issue at hand," says Johnson
ANEXTRACURRICULAREVENT
The provincial education department says matric dances are extra-curricular events organised by the School Governing Body (SGB)
"The WCED does not decide on or arrange these events
“In this instance, the SGB – which includes parent representatives – made the decision to cancel the event as a consequence of poor behaviour by learners
“The SGB held a parent meeting about the behaviour of matric learners at the school and informed them of the decision While some parents were unhappy about this decision, others supported it given the behaviour of learners," says the WCED's Kerry Mauchline
EIENSKAPPE

today in the fight against gender-based violence, the struggle for self-worth, sexual harassment to rape, absence of positive role models and a lack of unity to tackle these issues collectively Growing up on the Cape Flats I am urging young people
Love your neighbour as you love yourself
Most Christians would know that this is a well-known commandment found in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible
It compels us to treat others with the same level of care, respect, and kindness that we naturally extend to ourselves
This is a sharp contrast to the reality faced in our beloved country today
Whenever you are watching the news or listening to the radio you need to mentally prepare yourself for the worst All we hear is death, rape, murder, violence and other heinous crimes
The Cape Flats is currently bleeding So many senseless killings Families ripped apart
This begs the question then, is this showing love?
Once again, we have political leaders trying to paint a colourful picture, claiming that police have matters under control And that matters are not as bad as they look
If this is the case, why is our president not calling a family meeting to tell us what steps are being taken to stem the killings?
I fail to understand why, even during a crisis such as this, inequality is still rife
On Tuesday 19 August, the parliamentary police portfolio committee chair, Ian Cameron, and two members of parliament came under attack in an attempted hijacking incident in Philippi
Within 24 hours, two alleged suspects were apprehended for the crime
Police worked throughout the night to catch the criminals All available resources were deployed to apprehend the perpetrators
..
DURING TIMES OF ADVERSITY, IT IS WISE TO NOTE THAT NOT EVERYONE OR EVERYTHING REQUIRES YOUR REACTION OR RESPONSE.
A total of 24 hours, that's all it took to get the perpetrators Yet, hijackings are a lived reality for many Capetonians
Some rape survivors are still awaiting the police to arrest the culprits Some murderers are still roaming the streets
These MPs were not told that there are no police vehicles available They were not turned away and told to provide proof of the incident They were not made to wait for hours or even treated like the perpetrator
This is the service some ordinary South Africans are met with when they set foot at some police stations
I am in no way trying to downplay what these MPs experienced It is horrific, and no one should have to go through that Isn't it time that the police and those in leadership positions sit around the table, admit that they have failed in their mandate and get back to the drawing board?
How many more mass murders should be reported on? How many more communities should live in fear?
Instead of spending on projects that never come to fruition, create more job opportunities Make education more affordable so that young people can obtain degrees and become employable Invest in educational institutions
As we live in hope that the powers that be wake up soon and act Let us start by ourselves Practice more patience and tolerance with one another
How peaceful this nation would be if we obeyed the commandment to love our neighbour as we love yourself?

The City of Cape Town has confirmed that its specialised Diala-Ride transport service will be realigned from Monday 8 September to focus primarily on transporting persons with severe mobility impairments to and from work The shift, according to Rob Quintas, Mayco member for urban mobility, is a necessary response to an unsustainable financial model and an opportunity to expand access through broader, long-term transport investment
In a statement Quintas explained the reasoning behind the change, citing spiralling operational costs and increasing demand that far exceeds the service’s original design “We agree that mobility is key to independence, dignity and participation in society,” said Quintas “(But) the reality is that we cannot sustain an ever-expanding demand ”
The current cost per Dial-a-Ride trip averages R737, with users contributing
The average monthly cost to transport a single user who travels 21 days per month.
only R22
The City subsidises each trip by approximately R515, while the Western Cape Government covers the remaining R200 This amounts to a monthly cost of roughly R31 000 to transport a single user who travels 21 days per month equating to over R370 000 per user annually
“The financial model is unsustainable The service is currently running at a deficit of nearly R1 million per month," Quintas said
"We have explored multiple options in trying to secure funding from other sources, but without assistance from National Government, the City has no alternative but to align the service with the available funding ”
Dial-a-Ride was introduced in 2002 as a temporary support mechanism for working individuals with severe mobility impairments, intended to fill the gap until public transport systems became fully accessible
Over time, demand expanded beyond the initial scope, including trips for education, healthcare, and social participation creating pressure on limited resources
Quintas clarified that while the City values these needs, it must prioritise livelihoods within constrained budgets
“This decision does not mean we undervalue trips for education, healthcare, or social participation,” he said
“(But) within limited budgets, we must prioritise livelihoods while building the broader system of universal access "
Approximately 260 active users will be affected by the service’s return to its original mandate
Quintas emphasised the real investment lies in building a fully inclusive and accessible transport system that benefits far more people
In May, Council adopted the Universal Access Policy for Accessible Transport, which commits the City to developing a transport network where all people regardless of ability can move safely and independently
The MyCiTi bus service already meets accessibility standards, and the upcoming Phase 2A will extend inclusive access to communities in Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain
In parallel, the City is upgrading sidewalks and pedestrian crossings citywide to support children, the elderly, cyclists, and persons using mobility aids

Environmentalist group,
Save a Fishie is calling for a ban on plastic lollipop sticks after thousands were discovered over the past few months during beach cleanups
"Plastic pollution continues to plague Cape Town’s beaches, with one small yet persistent item now in the spotlight: plastic lollipop sticks," says Zoë Prinsloo, founder of Save a Fishie
Save a Fishie has launched a campaign demanding a ban on these products, citing their dangers to marine life, seabirds, and ecosystems
PETITIONFORCHANGE
Save a Fishie has launched a petition urging urgent action to ban plastic-stemmed lollipops in South Africa
The campaign emphasises that this small shift could mark a significant victory in reducing coastal pollution
“This is one of the easiest
environmental victories we can win,” Prinsloo stresses “If we can’t ban plastic lollipop sticks when safe alternatives are already available how can we expect to address bigger plastic challenges?”
AFAMILIARSIGHTONLOCALBEACHES
From Melkbosstrand and Bloubergstrand to Sunset Beach and Milnerton, residents and clean-up volunteers know the scene all too well: after heavy rains or storms, plastic debris litters the shoreline Among bottle caps, polystyrene, and straws, lollipop sticks are a stubborn and recurring find
Over the years, TygerBurger has reported extensively on how these items, flushed through stormwater drains and rivers, wash ashore in large numbers after winter downpours While unsightly, the danger goes far deeper than appearance posing real threats to ocean health
“Plastic lollipop sticks are one of the most common items we collect during clean-ups,” says Prinsloo “They don’t break down, they end up in the food chain, and they’re completely unnecessary because safer alternatives already exist ”
These small plastic stems, often overlooked, are far from harmless, Prinsloo says Rigid and sharp, they can injure or choke seabirds and marine animals Over time, they fragment into microplastics that enter the food web, potentially affecting human health as well
“Every stick we find is another
reminder of how deep the plastic crisis has become,” Prinsloo says “If we cannot phase out such a simple, replaceable product, then what hope do we have for tackling the larger plastic problem?”
Unlike many environmental challenges that require new innovations or major investment, this issue has an immediate fix: paper lollipop sticks Widely available and just as effective for holding sweets, paper options are biodegradable and far less harmful
“There is absolutely no reason for plastic sticks to still be on our shelves,” Prinsloo explains “Paper sticks work perfectly, they’re affordable, and they don’t destroy the environment ”
Save a Fishie’s campaign identifies clear responsibilities for change:
.Manufacturers: Stop producing plastic-stemmed lollipops and commit to paperbased alternatives
.Retailers: Remove plastic versions from shelves and offer only sustainable choices
.Parents, Schools, and Youth Groups: Refuse to buy or distribute plastic-stemmed lollipops at events, fundraisers, or as treats
.Government: Enforce legislation banning the
manufacture and sale of plastic sticks, in line with global trends phasing out single-use plastics
“Plastic pollution is choking our oceans If we want to protect our beaches, wildlife, and future generations, we need to cut this problem off at the source,” Prinsloo says
LESSONSFROMLOCALCLEAN-UPS
Beach cleanup groups often stress that the litter washing up after storms reflects what is flowing into rivers and stormwater systems daily Once in the sea, these plastics circulate indefinitely
“Every time it rains, we brace ourselves for the waste that will end up on our beaches,” Prinsloo noted “From Milnerton Lagoon right up to Melkbosstrand, plastic
lollipop sticks are always among the first items we pick up ” TygerBurger has previously covered how these items, particularly around Sunset Beach and Bloubergstrand, overwhelm volunteers after storm surges evidence of how entrenched the issue has become South Africa’s beaches are a source of pride, recreation, and tourism They are also vital habitats for marine life Campaigners argue that allowing unnecessary plastic to continue polluting these spaces undermines both environmental health and community well-being
As Prinsloo concluded: “Together, we can stop this source of litter at its root ” . Go to https://chng.it/ YFb6hgHgMT to sign the petition.
