“On 4March 2014, my lifechanged dramatically when Iwas diagnosed with progressive multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disease. Once diagnosed and referringback to my medical history, the doctorssuspect thatI have had multiple sclerosis for15years beforethe diagnosis. Ithink it’simportantthatpeople are more in tune with their bodies and react when they feel that something is not well,” she says.

“It is adisabilitatingdisease. There are approximately 96 different autoimmune diseases —diabetes type 1, fibromyalgia, rheumatoidarthritis, psoriasis, lupus, Celiac disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), and Crohn’s disease to mention afew. The most well-known autoimmune diseases surpass heartdisease and cancer combined. The sadreality is that once you getone autoimmune disease, you can get any otherofthe 96 illnesses. Iknow of afellow sufferer that has atotal of 13 autoimmune diseases.

“Similarly, multiple sclerosis is not my firstautoimmunedisease. My first autoimmune diseasewas uveitis, an eye inflammation whichaffects the tissue layerbehind theretina.Itisextremely painful. My eyes are alsovery sensitive to light,” she explains.

“Within ayear, Iwas wheelchair-bound. My physical abilitiesdeclined rapidly, and theemotional impactwas overwhelming. Extreme fatigue,asI have never experiencedbefore, was the order of the day. By early afternoon, simply holding my head upright was achallenge. Running abusinessunder these circumstances was,

to say the least, challenging,”she says. “In November 2014 it was for the first time Iwished to die,”she says.

Then came Covid.

“What could have been the final blow became the catalyst for reinvention. My already fragile property finance business was not going to survive lockdown, and I was forced to think differently, creatively and courageously.”

After completing adigital marketing course she created an online classified.

“It is my way of giving back to a community Ilove. It is my method of self-expression, my means of survival, my reason to get up every morning and aplatform through which Imentor other entrepreneurs and share hard-earned business knowledge. And Ican do all that in the comfort of my wheelchair!”

WOMANOFWONDERAWARD

In 2022, Rodrigues received the Woman of Wonder Award, with the citation noting her “formidable impact”and leadershipas an “iconic trailblazer”.

“I value this recognition not for the title, but for what it represents: that adversity does not disqualify purpose,” she says.

HERSUCCESSRECIPE?

“My attitude has remained simple and unwavering: If you are going to do something, do it to the bestofyour ability, or don’t do it at all. Stop being so ‘reasonable’.Stop collecting reasons and excuses. Just do it.Beauthentic, transparent, and vulnerable. And above all, if Ican do it,there is absolutely no reason on earth why you can’t.”

Groupprotestsquarrytreesremoval

Aprominent Cape Townenvironmental organisation hasadded its voicetogrowing opposition against the removal of historic trees at Tygerberg Quarry, proposing an alternative phased approach to addressthe City’s concerns whilst preserving decades of environmental screening.

TreeKeepers, which has aformal memorandum of understanding with the City of CapeTown, has written to Environmental Management questioning the wisdom of removing matureheritage trees that havescreened thequarryscar for 70 years.

ClareBurgess, aprofessional landscape architect and chairperson of TreeKeepers, acknowledged that thewaterwise gum trees are alien species but argued that theirremoval should be reconsidered given broader urban forest challenges facing CapeTown.

“This site is extremely inaccessible, and if viewed as awhole, is definitely part of theurban/natural landscape buffer strip and as suchshould be dealt with ina different manner,” Burgess wrote to City officials.

The letter highlights mounting pressure on CapeTown’s urban forest, citing intense densification, polyphagous shot hole borer (PSHB) infestations, plant diseases, new solar panel installations, and the lack of acomprehensive tree replanting programme to compensate for losses since the2018 drought.

TreeKeepers argues that removing the quarry’s mature trees compounds these existingchallenges to thecity’s already limitedtree canopy

HIGHVISIBILITYSITE

Burgess emphasised the site’svisibility

right oppos removal,TreeKeepers hasproposeda pragmaticcompromise: acknowledge the immense value of the existing gum trees andimplementa phased approachwhere alternative screening is establishedbefore anytrees are removed.

“Would adifferent approach to this issue be considered? One where the immense value of thesegum trees is acknowledged forthe work thatthey have done over thelast70years?” Burgess asked in her correspondence.

The organisation suggests treatingthe siteaspartofanurban/naturallandscape “buffer strip”— aconcept alsoappliedto SouthAfrican National Parks land within city boundaries that considers various factorsincludingfire breaks, people management, safety, andurban shade requirements. This approach recognises that sites within metropolitan areas may require different management strategies than those applied strictlywithinnature conservation areas

BROADERPOLICYCONTEXT

The TreeKeepers intervention comes as theCity develops aGreen Infrastructure Investment Framework, with environmental partners recently meeting to discuss how suchinitiatives fit within Cape Town’s broader policy ecosystem. The organisation’s formal relationship with theCity through their memorandum of understandinglends additional weight to their concerns aboutthe quarry tree removal programme.

CONSERVATIONEXPERTCHALLENGESTREE PRESERVATIONPROPOSAL

However, conservationistDalton Gibbs from theCity of Cape Town has disputed theTreeKeepers position, arguing that thereis“amisunderstanding” about thesite’s conservationstatus and legal requirements. Gibbs pointed outthat invasive alien

tree species on proclaimed nature reserves do not fall under “urban forests” and emphasised that Tygerberg Nature Reserve is mandated by legislation to conserve and restore natural biodiversity.

“Cape Townhas the greatest biodiversity of any city in the world, and itsnature reserves are legislated and mandated to conserve and restore such,”Gibbs saidin response to the TreeKeepers proposal.

Theconservation argument centres on the reserve’srole in protecting Swartland Shale Renosterveld, which Gibbs identifies as acritically endangered vegetation type that the reserve is specifically mandated to restore.

He argues that becauseTygerberg Nature Reserve sits outside the City’s urban edge, its management plan must prioritise restoring natural biodiversity over preserving alien tree species, regardless of theirhistorical screening function.

NewDurbanville CPF committeeelected

After five months, Durbanville Community Police Forum (CPF) last Wednesdayelected anew executive

The previous election in January failed due to objections that standard prescribed procedures according to the constitution forCPFs were not followed

The previousexecutive committee, which served for three andahalf years, resigned in September aftermonths of disputes andfrictionbetween the committee and Durbanville station commander Col Gonum Munsamy. The new committee is led by Stanislav

(Stan)Turketti, whohas vast experience as retired policeofficer in KwaZulu-Natal, and Adv Nicole Harris (vice chair).

Turketti joined the police service in 1974 andwas transfered as aspecial agent to Johannesburg in 1976, where he specialised in infiltration in drug cartels and also in other organised crime such as endangeredspecies, firearms and child-

children can deteriorate and die within24 hours if treatment is delayed.

“Even when children survive, this infection can cause devastating longterm complications such as hearing loss, brain injury, limb damage, scarring, and learning difficulties.

“Do not wait. Do not ‘see how it goes’. If you are worried at all, rather have your child checked immediately. Early antibiotics and hospital care save lives.

“Meningococcal disease is preventable. Vaccination significantly reduces the risk of severe disease and death,” he wrote.

LEWENSKIEKIE

THINKING OUTLOUD

We must rebuild safer communities forchildren

Ilook at young people todayand Icannot helpbut feel slightly sorry for them

Iamaproud millennial. Partofthe last generation to experience achildhood balanced between freedom and technology, between scraped knees and dial-up internet, between real-worldadventure andthe digital revolution that was still finding its feet

We were the bridgegeneration.

We knew life before the internet —and we witnessed its arrival.

We remember when boredom sparked creativity, not scrolling. When the streetlights flicking on at dusk wereour only curfew.

You would play in the roaduntil the sky turned orange, too scared to run homefor supperbecause once you stepped inside, that was it, you were in for the night.

We were scolded, but tomorrow, after school, it was the same case scenario.

There were no WhatsApp groups arranging playdates, no location sharing, no TikTok trends dictating how to have fun.

walking to the shop, heading to school, playing in their own backyard.

The very spacesthatoncedefined childhood freedomhave become sources of anxiety. Where we once worried about being shoutedatfor cominghome late, today’sparents worry aboutwhether their children will come home at all.

Thisisnot nostalgia speaking; it is grief for whathas been lost.

We oftenhear debates aboutgenerational resilience, aboutwhether millennials were tougher, or whether today’s youth are moreaware, more emotionally intelligent, moredigitally-skilled.

Perhaps every generationromanticises itsown upbringing. But what cannot be romanticised is safety.

Freedomrequires safety. Community requiressafety.

CHILDRENTODAYARE NOTWEAKER;THEYARE CONSTRAINED

There were bicycles, cricket in the street, hide-and-seek, and the unquestioned assumption thatoutside waswhere childhood belonged.

If we were insidethe housefor too long our parents would demand we play outside.

Children today will sadly never know that version of freedom.

The internet is not the villain. It has brought innovation, connection and opportunity. But it has also replaced something irreplaceable: unstructured, unsupervised, real-world play.

Today’schildren are growing up in a world where entertainment isstreamed, friendships are curated online, andsilence is filled by ascreen.

Their memories willbecloud-backed,not grass-stained

Theshift indoors is not only cultural, it is driven by fear. Crime has become so prevalent that many parents cannot allow their children to roam freely. For too many families, tragedy has struck during themost ordinary routines:

Childhood requires safety. Andhere lies theuncomfortable truth: we are failingto prioritise it.

Billions are spent on state entitiesplagued by mismanagement and inefficiency, while neighbourhood parks decay and community sports facilities remain underdeveloped or unsafe. Instead of investingmeaningfully in secure public spacesinwell-lit fields, maintained playgrounds, accessible after-school sport programmes funds are toooften mismanaged.

We speakabout youth empowerment while neglectingthe environments that allowyoungpeople to grow confidently andsocially.

Millennials grewupoutdoors not becausewewere braver, but because the world around us felt more accessible Children today are notweaker; they are constrained.

The tragedyisnot thatthey will never know life before theinternet. It is that they maynever knowlife beyond their front gates. If we careabout the next generation, the goal should notbeto recreatethe 90s, but to build safe spaces where children can rediscoverfreedom, where parents can exhale, where play can spill intostreets, andwhere childhood is notdefined by fear.
