City warns of congestion until December Roadworks at the Okavango Road and Hennop Road intersection in Kraaifontein and Durbanville got under way on Friday 21 August, with completion earmarked for 15 December. Construction will run from 07:30 to 17:00, Monday to Friday, and 07:30 to 14:00 on Saturdays. The upgrades include road and intersection widening, stormwater drainage installation, upgraded intersection signalling and improved streetlighting. Mayco member for urban mobility Rob Quintas said the roadworks were identiﬁed through the

City’s development approval requirements for a new development in the area, and would accommodate the increase in traffic generated by further development in Kraaifontein and Durbanville. The same number of traffic lanes will remain available throughout the project, but congestion can still be expected. The City is urging residents to use alternative routes where possible. “We ask that residents please be patient while these works are under way as some noise can be expected during this time,” said Quintas.

ix months after filing a complaint with traffic services over daily lawlessness of taxi drivers, a concerned Brackenfell resident is still waiting for answers, and says nothing on the road has changed, endangering the lives of other road users across the northern suburbs of Cape Town. The resident, whose identity is being protected, describes a daily barrage of reckless taxi behaviour along several roads in Brackenfell and surrounds that includes taxis blocking lanes, skipping slipways and forcing their way ahead of law-abiding motorists at intersections. In his written complaint to the traffic department he attached detailed illustrations of the routes on Google Earth photos of where the daily violations occur. These roads am among others include De Bron, Eversdal, Mountainview and Fairtrees road as well as Eskom Crescent. “This is a textbook example. A taxi stopped dead in the middle of De Bron Road, blocking an entire lane, despite there being a designated area to pull over barely two meters further on. Having caused the congestion himself, the driver then used the very gap his blocking had created to drive down to the traffic light, ignored the slipway completely, turned left directly at the light, and forced his way in front of every single vehicle legitimately waiting to turn into Mountain View drive,” he says. “I want to be absolutely clear that this is not an isolated incident I am blowing out of proportion. It is a daily occurrence. Every day these drivers treat the rules of the road as if they simply do not apply to them, and every day there is not a single officer anywhere to be seen holding them to account.” “It has now been close to six months since traffic services acknowledged my complaint and undertook to monitor the situation and provide feedback. I have had no feedback, and far more importantly, nothing on the road has changed,” he told the newspaper. To the City he writes “I have given you the routes. I have reported the behaviour, yet the only response I received was that I should phone 107 each time, as though the responsibility for policing our roads now rests with the motorists being endangered rather than with the City that taxes us for that very service. “That is not a solution. It is an admission that there is no proactive enforcement whatsoever. So let me ask plainly, what options are actually left to the tax paying citizens of this city? I cannot take the law into my own hands. I cannot take these taxi drivers to court myself.” The resident warned that growing

“we own the road” behaviour from taxi drivers, combined with continued population growth in the Western Cape, points to a City that has lost its grip. “It does not take a rocket scientist to see that the City no longer has any control over the roads, and with more and more people flocking to the Western Cape, I don’t see the City regaining any control without taking drastic steps.” He is demanding concrete answers. “What concrete enforcement action has actually been taken on the reported routes, and what plan exists to put visible, consistent traffic policing back on the roads so that these drivers can no longer act with complete impunity?” “Drivers that blatantly and constantly show no regard for the rules and face no consequences as there simply is absolutely no one to police them.” CITY FIRES BACK The City has hit back at the claim that taxi lawlessness goes unchecked, calling the accusation “disingenuous” and pointing to thousands of fines, impoundments and arrests as evidence of active enforcement. In a written response, Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith said traffic services issues thousands of fines and impounds hundreds of taxis every month, with statistics published weekly on the City’s website and social media platforms. Smith acknowledged the City receives hundreds of complaints daily but said officers cannot remain static in any one area due to the sheer demand on the service. “The safety and security directorate’s efforts to address the lawlessness on the roads are well documented,” he said. He referred to the City’s administrative logistics for an amended by-law, recently gazetted, that strengthens provisions for impounding vehicles. “Now that it has been gazetted, traffic officers are able to impound vehicles in a number of instances, including where the vehicle is being driven on a public road in a manner that is reckless and poses an immediate or imminent danger to the life of passengers, road users, or pedestrians,” he said. Smith noted the by-law targets lawlessness across all motorists, not only taxi drivers, and urged residents to report reckless driving to the Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700.

“My family tree and enslaved ancestors” was presented at the last meeting of Durbanville Heritage Society on Saturday 15 August by Dr Adrienne van As, lecturer in history education at the Wellington campus of CPUT. A large group from the Genealogical Society joined Durbanville Heritage Society for the afternoon at the Durbanville library. The highly interesting talk and slideshow guided the attendees on the use of online and digital tools and DNA testing to trace family history. There was a focus on the large number of slaves that were at the Cape during the time of the Dutch East India Company

settlement. During her talk, Dr Van As briefly shared the history of some of these slaves and their eventual assimilation into the lines of South African families.

City releases more land for housing T

he City of Cape Town’s land release programme is channeling over 14 000 affordable housing units worth R26 billion in private sector capital into communities that already exist, while opening the door to dignified, well-located homes for more Capetonians. It is as much a housing project as it is a socio-economic investment programme, according to the City. In his address to the Affordable Housing Investment Connect conference in Cape Town last week, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said the City has released more land for affordable housing in the current term than the decade prior under its Priority Programme to accelerate land release. The City is aiming to forge strong publicprivate partnerships for more affordable housing, and thus brought together private sector developers, financiers, government, and international finance bodies for this groundbreaking conference. According to the City, land parcels with

shifts in recent years, with Covid-19 enabling greater mobility and driving high semigration to the city. Two broad forces are behind the demand, people seeking employment opportunities, drawn by the city’s higher employment rate, and growing confidence in good governance prompting investment. Looking ahead, the pressures are set to intensify. Cape Town’s population is expected to grow to 8,4 million people over 24 years, with 70% of housing demand, both ownership and rental, falling in the affordable bracket. Between now and 2050, more than one million housing units will be required to meet the demand. The market has also seen a noticeable shift from freehold to sectional title developments, which now make up more than 50% of total property sales. According to the City, affordable housing brackets for ownership properties are valued at up to R1,5 million, while the rental space targets households earning between R3 500 and R34 800 per month.

ge has done little to dull the competitive spirit of seven Kenridge Tennis Club players who, all in their 80s, still take to the court twice a week. Tony Lockett (88), Joan Ward (86), Peter Aspinall (82), Mervyn Hobbs (81), Basil Haworth (81), Meryl Russell (80) and Jenny Beyer (80) are regular fixtures on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. Between them are decades of tennis, long-standing friendships and a determination to remain active. For Aspinall, who has played for about 40 years, the appeal is straightforward: “Good exercise, fun and banter on the court.” There is another benefit, he jokes — “escaping the wife’s job list”. DECADES OF TENNIS The seven have long histories with the sport. Beyer has played for 48 years, Ward for more than 40 and Hobbs for 36. Haworth first picked up a racquet during his primary school days and still travels from Table View to play at Kenridge. “The younger you start playing, the longer you will play,” Haworth said. The club’s Wednesday social group dates back about 35 years when a small group of older male players began getting together for matches. Women later joined and the group grew. Today, between 14 and 30 people regularly turn up. Although commonly known as the “Wednesday Vets”, players of all ages are welcome, with many of the current participants aged 70 and older. STILL PLAYING TO WIN The afternoons involves doubles, with players mixed up for games against others of a similar standard. But “social” does not mean the competitive streak has disappeared. Durbanville church hosts flower festival All Saints Church in Durbanville will host a flower festival from 2 to 6 September in celebration of its 170th anniversary. The church is the second oldest in the Durbanville area. The festivities will start with a church service, followed by daily floral displays until Sunday 6 September, when another church service will conclude the programme. The All Saints complex includes the original church and the old parsonage, as well as a church hall and a garden of remembrance. The complex dates back to 1860 and is closely associated with the history and development of Durbanville. Built between 1850 and 1860 during the early growth of Durbanville, in Baxter Street, the church features a Victorian-style church. It was designed by Sophy Gray, wife of Cape Town's first Anglican bishop, Robert Gray. It showcases classic Victorian Gothic Revival architectural

Beyer said the sport had “absolutely” helped her remain socially connected, while Aspinall described the sessions as regular dates in the diary. Their families are equally pleased to see them staying active. “My kids are very proud that I still play tennis,” Hobbs said. Russell’s advice to younger people is simply: “Follow my example.” The group has also contributed to Kenridge Tennis Club away from the court. Two of the seven are life members, while among them are a former chair and others who have served on the club’s executive committee. Their message to younger generations is much the same as their approach to tennis: getting older does not mean giving up the things you enjoy. “Don’t ever give up sport because of growing old — adapt how you play and keep going,” Aspinall said. In Haworth’s view, tennis offers the combination that has kept the group coming back year after year, keeping them “fit, active and socially connected”.

eddam House Durbanville is celebrating another set of Cambridge International results, with its Grade 11 students earning 210 subject distinctions in the June 2026 IGCSE examinations. Two recent graduates achieved outstanding A Level results. A total of 59 Grade 11 students sat Cambridge International IGCSE examinations across 17 subjects, producing 369 individual examination results. The cohort achieved an overall IGCSE grade average of 79%. TEN ACHIEVED A* AGGREGATES Ten students achieved an A* aggregate and a further 20 achieved an A aggregate, meaning that 30 students — 51% of the class — completed their IGCSE examinations with an A or A* aggregate.

REDDAM HOUSE STUDENTS REACH NEW ACADEMIC HEIGHTS Across all individual subject results, 25% were above 90%. Nine subjects recorded aggregate averages above 80%, with a further six achieving averages between 70% and 80%. Leading the IGCSE results was Neil Madeleyn, who achieved a 95% aggregate, including 98% for mathematics and chemistry and 96% for accounting, biology and physics. Michael Hamdulay achieved a 94% aggregate, earning 96% in mathematics, computer science and chemistry, and 91% in French. Etienne Louw achieved a 93% aggregate, including 96% for accounting and 94% for mathematics, biology and physics. Jejoon Kim, Alexander Smit and

Jessica Kellerman each achieved aggregates of 92%. Jejoon earned 96% for mathematics, Alexander achieved 97% for physics, and Jessica recorded 97% for literature in English. The school's other top IGCSE performers were David Lee, with a 91% aggregate and 97% for mathematics; and Uzair Adam, Mia Jooste and Sebastian da Mata Rodrigues, who each achieved 90% aggregates. Uzair earned 96% for mathematics, Mia achieved 93% for art and design, and Sebastian recorded 97% for mathematics. A LEVEL SUCCESS OPENS DOORS Outstanding A Level results have secured places at leading international universities for

Youkyum Kim and Nicholas Janser, with Youkyum setting a new academic record for Reddam House Durbanville. Youkyum achieved a combined A Level aggregate of 97% — the highest in the school's history and the first time a Reddam House Durbanville student has reached this milestone. He earned 97% for A Level physics and 96% for A Level further mathematics, having already achieved 98% for A Level mathematics in November 2025 and received Cambridge's Top in South Africa award for the subject. He completed physics and further mathematics in just six months rather than the usual year and has received a

final offer to study for a BA in mathematics at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Nicholas also completed his A Level studies on an accelerated six-month timeline, beginning his preparation immediately after completing his AS Level examinations at the end of 2025. Warrant dodgers get home visits S

everal Cape motorists, who had been ignoring their outstanding warrants of arrest as a result of a traffic infringement, were visited at home by traffic officers last week. As a result, the City of Cape Town’s traffic services were able to collect R110 000 on outstanding warrants. Kevin Jacobs, traffic services spokesperson, said motorists with outstanding fines or warrants are encouraged to settle these as soon as possible. On Wednesday 19 August traffic officers executed 160 warrants at 54 addresses across the metro, said Jacobs, adding that the operation forms part of an effort to ensure that motorists are held accountable for traffic transgressions committed. THOUSANDS OF WARRANTS ISSUED YEARLY The traffic services execute, on average, more than 96 000 warrants each year, Jacobs said. “In this latest operation, 16 people were arrested, while 39 were released on a warning.” Suspects finalised outstanding warrants to the value of R110 000 at the department’s mobile payment centre, said Jacobs. Jacobs said apart from trace operations, traffic officers can also enforce

BEWARE OF SCAM Earlier this month the City’s traffic services warned motorists not to fall for a scam in which they are instructed to pay a fine within 24 hours or face legal action. The scam involved email or text messages being sent to motorists demanding them to pay the fine. “We want to remind the public to please be careful and verify notices received before making payment or sharing their details. In Cape Town, infringement notices are sent via post and MMS, with follow-up SMS reminders. They will include a picture of the fine notice and links to two online platforms,” Jacobs said back then.

he Durbanville Community Policing Forum (CPF) took its message of positive choices, personal responsibility and hope to Grade 10 and 11 learners at Fisantekraal High School last week. Learners were encouraged to stand up for what is right, make positive decisions and prioritise their education as a foundation for a better future. Awareness were created with fun educational interactive games on topics such as the importance of education, the risks of substance abuse, crime and gangsterism. They also focused on antibullying, mental health and gender-based violence. Homegrown actor Bradley Williams, together with community activist Bradwin Daniels, brought the message to life through a powerful stage performance highlighting how alcohol and drug abuse, firearms, gangsterism and teenage pregnancy can rob young people of opportunities and have a lasting impact on their families and communities. “The Durbanville CPF extends its sincere thanks to Kurt Oliver, councillor, and Sgt Tintswalo Sithole of the spiritual crime

People on the streets are also human On a sunny winter's afternoon in Cape Town, it is easy to become absorbed in the beauty of the city. The blue skies, warm sunlight and busy streets can make it tempting to believe that everything is well. But on the streets, another reality exists: one that many people walk past without a second thought It is the reality of people living there. For many, the sight of someone sleeping under a bridge, sitting on a pavement or pushing their belongings in a trolley has become part of the city's landscape. We see them, but don’t really see them. We make assumptions about how they got there and, sometimes, we judge them. But perhaps the most important lesson is that we should not judge. People living on the streets have hopes, talents, friendships, memories and dreams. Their circumstances are different from ours, but their humanity is not. I recently wrote about Sally Roman, who has lived on the streets of Cape Town for more than 20 years. She arrived in the city as a teenager, hoping to find a better life. Her journey did not unfold as she had hoped. Yet, sitting on the Fan Walk in Green Point, with a pair of scissors in her hand, Sally is not defined by homelessness. She is a self-taught hairdresser. She loves children. She loved singing in her school

choir. She describes herself as someone who gets along with everyone. What is equally striking is the bond she has formed with the people around her. Her friend speaks warmly about her after she cuts his hair. He is happy with the result, but his words reveal that the value of the interaction goes beyond a haircut. He describes Sally as a nice person who is always happy. These friendships remind us that people living on the streets build communities too. They look out for one another. They share stories, laughter and sometimes the little they have. They form genuine connections because, in a difficult environment, having someone who knows you, understands you and accepts you can mean everything. Life on the street is undoubtedly difficult. It can expose people to violence, hunger, illness, loneliness and uncertainty. But it can also create bonds that are difficult for those outside that world to understand. During Women's Month, Sally's message that women should support one another is particularly powerful. She speaks against the tendency to put other women down and calls for more love between women. Perhaps that message extends beyond women. We all need to ask ourselves how we treat people whose lives look different from ours. Compassion does not mean ignoring the challenges associated with homelessness. It means recognising the person behind the circumstances. It means understanding that not everyone chose to live on the street. For many, a series of difficult circumstances, limited opportunities, family breakdown, poverty or other challenges led them there. Sometimes, what a person needs most is not judgement, but a listening ear, a conversation, a meal, a kind word, a moment of dignity. We may not be able to change someone's life, but we can choose how we respond to them. Because the people on our streets are someone's friend, someone's parent, someone's child and above all, they are human beings deserving of love, compassion and dignity. - KAYLYNNE BANTOM

Concern for plight of Rawsonville Thank you for I am writing out of deep concern for the community and local businesses of Rawsonville, a small farming town. Following the severe rain and ﬂooding across the province, the main bridge connecting surrounding farms and communities to the town centre sustained critical damage. It is currently closed to all vehicular traffic and accessible only to pedestrians. As a result, residents and farmers are forced to take a 60 km detour to reach the other side or travel all the way to Worcester to conduct basic business. Local business owners are suffering severely under these circumstances. Several have had to lay off staff, and some have been forced to close down entirely due to the drastic decline in foot traffic and trade. Despite political representatives visiting for multiple meetings, no practical repairs or relief efforts have begun to assist this farming community.

This situation imposes a massive ﬁnancial and logistical strain on everyone, forcing workers and residents to commute signiﬁcantly longer distances for work and daily necessities. It is disheartening to see both national and local governments leave a struggling community to fend for itself. Furthermore, I was informed that a local company offered to create a temporary crossing for cars to relieve the congestion, but was reportedly halted by a nearby mining company along the river (though I cannot independently verify this report). It raises a painful question: why must smaller, vulnerable communities suffer the most and wait the longest for emergency assistance? For anyone travelling in or near the area, please make a conscious effort to support our local businesses. JACQUES, E-mail

Traffic services need more visibility There are comments made by the mayor about being the best municipality in the country — with concern for the well-being, safety and security of the citizens of this city but it appears that the mayor and the senior official responsible for safety and security have a total disregard. Many letters have been written in the local Wednesday newsmedia regarding the disregard for stop signs, yield signs, red traffic lights, but there are no traffic police who spend time in the suburbs patrolling. There has been no evidence by the mayor or the senior official providing instructions to the traffic police, to apply the law, neither any mention of these lawless incidents are stated as key performance indicators. Visibility of traffic police is only evident when a road incident occurs and they arrive in their numbers, but during the normal daily traffic movement "they are out of sight, out of mind". The success of any organisation is determined when the most senior official in the business drives the company through KPI's down to the lowest level to ensure the desired results are achieved. At the City. Fines should be issued to a few citizens for disobeying, disregarding stop signs, yield signs, traffic lights and tailgating, and the message will soon have the desired effect. DISGUSTED, Uitzicht, Durbanville JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security, responds: The City’s traffic service issues thousands of ﬁnes to motorists each month. As indicated previously, these statistics are available and traffic service reports are presented monthly at the subcouncil. Therefore, to claim there is little to no enforcement is disingenuous.

The efforts of the safety and security directorate to address the lawlessness on the roads are well documented. In addition, the City’s traffic service is now finalising the administrative logistics required for enforcement of the amended by-law recently gazetted. The amendments centre on the provisions for impounding vehicles and related penalties. Now that it has been gazetted, traffic officers are able to impound vehicles in a number of instances, including where the vehicle is being driven on a public road in a manner that is reckless and poses an immediate or imminent danger to the life of passengers, road users, or pedestrians. In the last year, between July 2025 and June 2026, the City’s traffic service recorded nearly four million offences. During the period, they made 2 767 arrests — up from 2 255 the year before. Drunk driving arrests increased by 32% from 1 619 in 2024/25 to 2 138. The Traffic Enforcement Unit recorded the following successes. A total of 20 deployments were held in Durbanville (9), Uitzicht (6), and Fisantekraal (5); a total of 1 143 fines were issued in Durbanville (658), Uitzicht (213) and Fisantekraal (272); and a total of 41 taxis impounded in Durbanville (23), Uitzicht (9) and Fisantekraal (9). The traffic enforcement statistics and the hundreds of thousands of complaints every year are key reasons why we introduced this by-law in the first place, and then spent three years working on even tougher amendments, to address the continued lawlessness on our roads, perpetrated by the motoring public and not just taxi drivers. I encourage residents to report reckless and negligent driving to the public emergency communication centre on 021 480 7700.

The unsafe outdoors I read with a wry smile the letter about Saturday-night window shopping in Bellville. (TB 19/8) I too remember Voortrekker Road as the heartbeat of our weekends, the strolling, the chatting, the simple pleasure of looking before buying. But I must respectfully push back on one point. Online shopping is not the villain here. It is a tool, and like any tool, it depends on how we use it. Yes, a website cannot replace the warmth of a shopkeeper's greeting or the pleasure of browsing with a friend. But online shopping has also given elderly residents, people with disabilities and working parents access to goods and services they might otherwise never reach. It is not impersonal by nature, it is efficient. The real tragedy is not that we shop online, but that we feel unsafe outdoors. If we want our town centres back, we must ﬁght for them not merely mourn their passing. Bellville is not beyond saving. New developments, improved lighting, visible policing and community-driven initiatives can change the picture. The Brackenfell Business Improvement District has shown what organised community action can achieve. There is no reason Bellville's CBD cannot follow suit. The Valiant is long gone, and no website will bring it back. But neither will nostalgia alone revive a street. If every resident who remembers the good old days committed to visiting a local shop once a week, the difference would be visible within months. I share the longing. Bowls legend celebrates 88 years HERMAN JANSEN massive 5 000 hours for the love of the game, totalling about 210 days. This is how long the logbook of Walter Oosthuizen, the legendary Durbanville Bowling Club (DBC) stalwart, shows he has spent around bowling greens in his 45 years as a bowling umpire.

FORMIDABLE OPPONENT The affable Oosthuizen from Table View turned 88 yesterday (Tuesday 25 August)) and is still a formidable opponent on the greens as well. Oosthuizen, a member at DBC for 33 years, qualified as a South African Bowling Association Technical Official in 1981. He has served in this capacity for an uninterrupted 45 years. SPORTS LEGEND AWARD In 2016 already the Western Cape ministry of cultural affairs and sport honoured Oosthuizen with a Sports Legend Award "in recognition of the unselfish contribution that you have made to sport in the Western Cape". He and his wife, Pat (86), this year celebrated 65 years of married life. They got married in Worcester on 11 March 1961. The couple have lived in Table View for many years.

Oosthuizen studied mechanical engineering and spent decades in Worcester at Eskom.

TABLE TENNIS His sporting career began as a table tennis player where he was dubbed as "King of Boland" in this sporting code. He first got Boland colours in 1959 and eventually was capped more than fifty times. He won more than sixty Boland titles. The couple moved to Cape Town in 1988. INCREDIBLE FEAT After 30 years of playing bowls, Oosthuizen won the Western Province senior single title in the 2020-'21 season. In the first round he achieved the incredible feat which got him into the Guinness Book of Records in 1997. He won this match 21-0 within six heads. This is the quickest possible: The player first to 21 wins a (four-bowl) single match. 'GUINNESS BOOK OF RECORDS' Pat Oosthuizen used to be a formidable bowler as well. Youth Classical Concert celebrates 55th year YOUNG SOLOISTS WILL PERFORM ON STAGE

he annual Youth Classical Concert celebrates its 55th year at Artscape on Saturday 5 September at 19:00. Twelve young classical musicians and singers who auditioned successfully will perform as soloists with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO), conducted by Brandon Phillips. Presented by Artscape and the CPO, supported by the City of Cape Town, the concert gives young musicians the opportunity to perform with a symphony orchestra on a professional stage. Audition candidates had to be bona ﬁde music students, perform at a high standard and reside or study in the Western Cape. The concert is a celebration of young musical talent, not a competition. The programme includes concertos by Ravel, Mozart, Shostakovich, Hofmeyr, Weber, Ibert, Khachaturian and Donizetti, with arias by Saint-Saëns and Handel. SOLOISTS The soloists, aged between 12 and 22, include pianists Giorgia Ehlers (19) from Mowbray, Alexander McIvor (18) from Cape Town and siblings Xizhi Aiden Luo (15) and Weien Amy Luo (18) from Stellenbosch. Other instrumentalists are cellist Solange Rojas (22), raised in Lima, Peru, marimba player Kyrah Adams

(20) from Paarl, clarinettist Benjamin Monvoisin (12) from Loevenstein, euphonium player Kumkani Kabane (20) from Cape Town and saxophonist James Cilliers (20) from Durbanville. Singers are sopranos Phoebe Damons (20) from Bellville and Sinesipho Tokwe (19) from Observatory, and mezzo-soprano Lilitha Nkuku (20) from Goodwood. Each soloist receives mentoring from Phillips, resident conductor of the CPO, head of woodwinds at the South African College of Music at the University of Cape Town and conductor of the UCT ensembles. This year marks the 11th Youth Classical Concert he will conduct. Since the concert's inception, more than 600 young musicians have performed with the CPO. Many are now soloists or members of South African and international symphony orchestras and opera companies. A record 75 applications to audition were received this year. The concert runs for two hours, including a 30-minute interval. Fine Music Radio will broadcast the concert live. International ballet talent comes to CT The 13th South African International Ballet Competition (SAIBC) concluded with a gala at the Artscape Opera House on Thursday 6 August. This year's competition, supported by the City, brought together 118 dancers aged between nine and 22. They competed across the Scholar, Junior and Senior divisions. Dancers took part in Classical Ballet, Contemporary, Choreographic and Ensemble categories. Competitors from South Africa and countries including Cuba, Russia and the United Kingdom (UK) gathered in Cape Town for the semi-finals and finals, highlighting the competition's growing reputation as a leading international ballet platform on the African continent. Founded by Dirk Badenhorst, artistic director of Mzansi Ballet, the SAIBC remained the only international ballet competition of its kind in Africa. It provided young dancers with performance experience, international exposure and opportunities to connect with leading figures in the ballet industry. The competition, a member of the International Federation of Ballet Competitions, was adjudicated by an international jury comprising Joseph Morrissey from the United States of America, Sergey Usanov from Russia, Callum Hastie from Australia, Kate Coyne from the UK, Lorelei Bari from Romania/ Germany, Ariel Mejic from Cuba and South Africa's Thoriso Magongwa, who

was based in Chechnya. The closing gala featured performances by competition winners and guest artists. Prima ballerina Angela Revie of Mzansi Ballet performed the Walpurgisnacht Pas de Deux with fellow Mzansi Ballet dancer and Cuban juror Ariel Méjica. AVRIL FILLIES enjamin Ward, leg spin bowler from Durbanville Cricket Club, was recently awarded the Premier Bowler Award for the 2025-2026 season as the leading wicket taker with 56 wickets at the awards ceremony of the Western Province Cricket Association in Newlands. His average is 11.34 per wicket and economy of 3.64 per over, with his best of 6/20. He was also awarded the Durbanville Cricket Club Player’s Player for the 2025’26 season, as well as the leading bowler at the National Club Championships.

SHOWMANSHIP AND DRAMA Ward attended Elkanah House and Parklands College and is playing cricket for 16 years. He is a big fan of the late Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting from Australia and admired their showmanship and drama they created which add to the excitement of the game. “I am a big fan of creating an atmosphere, like them. I feel good about going into the next season as the leading wicket taker. Last season was a good season, but that doesn’t mean for one second that I have any expectations for the 2026-’27 season. Every season is new, and cricket is a team game, there are so many variables going into every match that you cannot take it for granted. I am hoping I

HOBBIES For hobbies he likes learning things and taught himself how to play the piano and do some card tricks, but wouldn’t say he has any specific hobbies. His other sport is playing tennis and he plays golf really badly. “I used to be a goalkeeper for my school football team too, because I knew I didn’t have to run as much as the other guys. I have so many things that motivate me. Family, my teammates, coaches, my girlfriend and a constant drive to improve, even if sometimes it really doesn’t go my way,” Ward says. To establish which coach had the best impact on his cricket career would by unfair as he played a lot of cricket for a lot of different teams and listing all the coaches is tough. FANTASTIC CLUB ENVIRONMENT “The coaches at the Complete Cricketer Academy (Craig Copeland, Robbie van Harte, and my dad Laurie Ward) have been there from the start for me, Craig in particular being a role model and friend

during the tough times that are inevitable as a leg spin bowler. At junior level, David Sandmann was an incredible mentor and helped me believe in myself when I often didn’t. “For Jersey my coach Neil MacRae has been fundamental in my development as a player too. Ryan Bailey, my coach at

Maties, also helped me grow as a player and put trust in my bowling at various competitions and tournaments around the country. “Finally now at Durbanville, Sean Ackerman has helped me settle in to a fantastic club environment. He helps me control my emotions (which is no easy task) and always aims to get the most out of us all as players and as individuals. I have been incredibly fortunate with the coaching I have been provided with throughout my career,” he says.
