Bunnieskilledinattack

Amother and her 10-yearold daughter were traumatised when they witnessed severely injuredand dead bunnies withcrushed or broken hips and brokenor severed legs in Durbanville cemetery.

The bunnies are believed to have been beaten with agolfclub and poles by agroup of boys between seven and 12 yearsof age.

Most of the injured bunnies had to be euthanised to relieve them of their misery

While trying to catch the injured bunnies, the mother also saw several graves thathad been freshlyvandalised —the tombstones brokenand pushed over.

One of the gravestones wasalso vandalised with rude language spray-painted all over it.The day before, the security guard at the cemetery was pelted with stones by the same boys when she reprimanded them. Her calls for assistance to the City of Cape Town fell on deaf ears.

Thelaw enforcement department was also reported to have failed to respond. Aprivate security companyinDurbanville cameto their rescueinthe end.

This comes after apellet gun was used to shoot many bunnies in the cemetery in March (“No more Easter bunny, warns bunny lover from Durbanville”,

According to Amor McLaren, she and her daughter, Mikah, arrived at the cemetery on Sunday3May at about12:40 to feed the bunnies. Also in the cemeteryatthattime was Genae Maree, avolunteerwith The House of Fluffles,a rabbitrescue organisation in Claremont that assists withthe cemetery bunnies through sterilisations, rehoming andcoveringveterinary bills. Maree was accompanied by her 70-year-old mother, Gill.

“When we arrived, boththe upper gates were locked andwe could notsee asecurity guard. After waiting ashort while, the guardcame andsaid that she was locking the gates because ‘boys werebeating the bunnies and I chased them away, so they threw stones at me as well’.

“She hadattempted to take avideo on herphone of the children, which she alsoshowed us.At the second feedingstation, we noticed aninjured rabbit and decided to catch her. I administered pain medication andtook hertothe veterinarian thefollowing morning,” she says

“We named herCandy Cane —a beautiful, gentle old soul. CandyCanewas examined by Dr JacqeulineSharp of theSharpExotic andSmall Animal Veterinary Clinic in Kraaifontein.She informed us that the bunny’spelvis was broken. The decisionwas made to relieve her of her pain and trauma.”

When McLarenmovedtothe nextfew feedingstations, the guard called them overand pointedout adeadrabbit.“The dead rabbit appearedtohave sufferedgreatly, with blood coming from her mouth, nose, eyes and ears. We removed her remains,” she says.

When they went to feed the bunniesatthe other feeding stations, the guard came to warn them thattherewere three boys at thelower part of thecemetery —the same oneswho hadbeen throwing stonesatthe rabbits the previousday.

“I then noticed thata larger groupofyouths was walking along the upperfencing,seeking ways to enterthe cemetery.

more than four times the total number of pipes of all the other seven major cities in the country combined —including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Ekurhuleni,Durban, Port Elizabeth, East London and Bloemfontein.

“I would like to replace much more because our number of pipe bursts is not yet where we want it to be.Itbreaksmyheart and frustrates me immensely when Ivisit poorer communities in Cape Town and Istill see people livingwithdaily sewer overflows, becausethe pipes were built for 10 000 people and now thereare 50 000 people living in that area. We have to go and upgrade those pipe systems and pump stations, although it is along and slow journey.

“We have to be clear in our political leadership that we will never allow the failure that has happened in other cities to happenhere. We will start to take firm action to address the urban decay issues that were setting in in thecityafter covid. And we haveset about doing that in afocused, disciplined way. When it is finished sometime in the middle of next year we’ll see 300 buses running all day long along that corridor —all the way down through Philippi, Gugulethu, Hanover Park, Mitchells Plain and ending in Khayelitsha. It will make amajor difference to commuter transport,” he said.

“What has happened as Cape Townhas continued to succeed and as other cities have continued to deteriorate, is we have had massive semigration. If you thought semigration was strong before covid, we have data that shows 100 000 families —not people, but families have moved from Gauteng to Cape Towninthe last four years —mostly to Somerset West, Durbanville, the Atlantic Seaboard and Table View.

“We know why they are coming; they also want to live in acitythat works, that offers agood future for theirchildren. What that means is that we’ve had more pressure on our roads, more pressure on our infrastructure, more pressure on our schools. Ourschools are bursting at the seams. And of course, more pressure on our house prices,” he said.
