Western Cape’s unemployment rate holds steady DESIRÉE RORKE

he Western Cape’s unemployment rate has dipped to 19,5% in the second quarter of 2026, down from 19,6% the previous quarter, keeping the province below the 20% mark for over a year. The latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey figures, welcomed by the Western Cape Government, remain well below the national rate and point to steady economic performance despite tough global and national conditions. However, decreases in employment were recorded in Western Cape (48 000), Gauteng (22 000) and North West (15 000), while Mpumalanga (41 000), Eastern Cape (13 000) and Free State (9 000) were provinces that observed the highest increases in employment. It is important to note that decrease in employment means fewer people have active jobs, while a decrease in unemployment means fewer people who want work are without a job. These two metrics track different groups in the Statistics South Africa labor force data and can move independently due to shifts in population and job seeking. Seven out of ten sectors in the province recorded year-on-year gains in employment, driven by the finance (+41 000), trade (+41 000) and agriculture (+26 000) sectors. The provincial labour absorption rate, the share of the working age population that is employment, also grew 1,1 percentage points year-onyear reaching 55,7% compared to 39,6% nationally. The latest QLFS figures also confirm that over the past 10 years, the province’s unemployment rate has consistently remained below the national average. “Every decrease in the unemployment rate is encouraging. It shows that we continue to foster a resilient job creation ecosystem that works for our residents,” Winde stated. “Despite intense head winds, we are still making progress. The Western Cape and its residents have faced an incredibly difficult three months, marked by several weather events that wreaked havoc on infrastructure and the agricultural sector, in particular, which is a major economic driver in the province. “We know we must and can do more to grow our economy. We will push even harder to bring more investment to our province that creates many more jobs.” Western Cape minister of agriculture, economic development and tourism, Dr Ivan Meyer, welcomed the latest figures. “While South Africa lost 68 000 jobs yearon-year, the Western Cape created 91 000 jobs over this period. This achievement reflects the resilience of our economy, the determination of our businesses, and the impact of creating an enabling environment for investment, growth and job creation,” said Meyer. Meyer said the results demonstrate

Our focus remains on attracting investment, supporting businesses, expanding export opportunities, improving the skills pipeline, and building the infrastructure required for sustained economic growth.” NATIONAL OUTLOOK Countrywide the official unemployment rate was 33,6% in the second quarter of this year. According to the latest results, there was an increase of 345 000 in the number of unemployed persons to 8,5 million, while there was a decrease of 16 000 in the number of employed persons to 16,7 million compared with the first quarter. This resulted in an increase of 329 000 (or 1,3%) in the labour force during the same period. The above changes in employment and unemployment resulted in the official unemployment rate (labour underutilisation) increasing by 0,9 of a percentage point from 32,7% in the first quarter of tis year to 33,6% in the second quarter. Discouraged job-seekers decreased by 227 000 to 3,7 million, other available job seekers decreased by 49 000 to 861 000, and unavailable job-seekers decreased by 4 000 to 44 000, resulting in a net decrease of 280 000 to 4,6 million in the potential labour force – persons who were available but not seeking or unavailable but seeking. Those outside the labour force for other reasons increased by 72 000 to 125 million. Persons outside the labour force, which is the total of those in potential labour force and others outside the labour force, decreased by 208 000 to 17,1 million in the second quarter of this year. The number of persons employed in the formal sector and household sector decreased by 41 000 and 9 000 respectively in 2026, and in the informal sector increased by 34 000 over the same period. The increases in industry employment were mainly recorded in trade (70 000), construction (39 000) and finance (11 000). The largest decreases in employment were recorded in community and social service (57 000), mining (26 000), agriculture and manufacturing (15 000 each). The results for the second quarter of 2026 show that the total number of unemployed youth (15-34 years) increased by 264 000 to 5,0 million compared with quarter one of 2026, while employed youth recorded a decrease of 40 000 to 5,6 million. As a result, the youth unemployment rate increased by 1,5 percentage points to 47,4% in the second quarter of 2026.
Inaugural creative festival headed for Melkbos Melkbosstrand will come alive with art, film, music and community events when the inaugural Melkbosstrand ART/FILM Festival takes place from 21 to 27 September. The seven-day festival grew from the popular Melkbos Ateljee OPEN STUDIOS art walk and will feature independent films, visual art, live music, poetry and creative workshops at venues across the West Coast town. taff shortages and system delays at the Sassa office in Bellville have come under the spotlight following an oversight visit by Social Development Minister Dina Pule. Pule visited the office on Thursday 13 August, accompanied by Sassa CEO Themba Matlou and regional officials, to assess conditions and challenges affecting services. During the visit, employees raised concerns about staffing levels, slow systems and the pressure of assisting large numbers of beneficiaries. The Bellville office is one of several Sassa facilities dealing with high demand for services, with long queues and waiting times among the challenges raised. STAFF RAISE CONCERNS Employees told the minister that staff shortages were making it difficult to assist beneficiaries efficiently. Concerns were also raised about the biometric verification system being piloted at the office, with staff indicating that delays on the system were affecting the speed at which they could process cases. Sassa has introduced measures at the Bellville office aimed at improving services and managing queues. These include biometric verification, queue management and the screening of beneficiaries before they reach service counters. Despite these measures, staff indicated

ADDITIONAL WORKERS TO BE DEPLOYED The Bellville visit formed part of oversight visits to Sassa offices in the Western Cape as government looks at ways to address pressure at service points. Pule announced that 1 000 contract workers would be deployed to Sassa offices nationally to assist with staff shortages
and help reduce queues. Sassa provides social grants to millions of South Africans, placing considerable pressure on offices where beneficiaries need assistance with applications, verification and other grant-related matters. It is not yet clear how many of the additional workers will be allocated to the Bellville office or when they will take up their posts. The visit has renewed attention on conditions at the Bellville branch and efforts to improve services for beneficiaries who rely on the facility.

here was silk, there was satin, and there was no shortage of glam. But what filled Levè Coffee Shop in Brackenfell on a recent occasion to mark Women’s Month was a deep collective pride that comes once a year, when South Africa turns its attention to the women who hold communities together. Organiser Yvette Vatblé says the aim of the event was to give women a chance to dress to the nines and celebrate womanhood. “I have so many friends that never have the opportunity to dress up, put on make-up and hang out. As busy women we seldom get this chance. Single women don’t want to hang out in clubs or bars and married women seek time away from home sometimes,” she says. The theme of the evening was, “Be you and love yourself.” “In a busy life women have the need to feel feminine and know they are worthy no matter what,” she says. “It does not matter whether you are married or single, career women or housewives, what you are built like or what age you are. At the end of the day we all want to feel worthy.” Conversations with the women at the event revealed one challenge above all, the weight of society’s expectation to be perfect. “You have to be the perfect mom, perfect
wife, best career woman, and often with little support, and ashamed to reach out for help,” says Ilze Meyer, now in her forties. “But in actual fact, these things are all unattainable, and yet we feel guilty for not living up to them. And what is worse is that it will often be other women who judge you if you don’t fit the bill.
As women we are so quick to judge each other in how we raise our children or live our lives.” She says it is especially sad to see how women bully each other from a young age right into adulthood. “You are either not feminine enough or too feminine. It is so unnecessary because we are all made differently.”

Danksy Thys (Louw van Diemersdal) het ons met Breyton Milford, uitvoerende hoof van Agri Expo, in aanraking gekom. Hy het ons genooi om uit hul versameling trofeë te kom kies. ABUSE Beyond the daily grind, women also face the heavier burdens of abuse and stereotyping. Audrey van Wyk* (19) was only 15 when she first experienced abuse. “I was with him for a year. At first it was only verbal abuse but then he became jealous and I endured physical and sexual abuse,” she says, adding that she only realised the extent of the abuse afterward. Today, she still finds it a gift to be a woman, but believes women need to champion one another far more. Of a long-term toxic relationship plagued with infidelity she says, “I have been depleted, as a woman emotionally, mentally and even financially. I lost myself and for a very long time I felt I was less than everyone else. It took me two years out of the situation to feel like myself again and to figure out that I was only living a role. ie Groot Phesantekraal-wynlandgoed se 2024 Groot Phesantekraal Pinotage is verlede Woensdagaand as een van die land se voortreflikste wyne uit amptelik afgebakende terreine in die 21ste jaarlikse SA Terroir-wyntoekennings by die Lanzerac Hotel and Spa aangewys. Dié wyn was een van 38 nasionale wenwyne in die kompetisie — die enigste uit die Durbanville-wynlandgoed wat dié eer te beurt geval het. Die ses top-trofeë is aan wynprodusente uit vyf verskillende terreine toegeken. Boonop het al die nasionale wenwyne van die verskillende wynkultivars en -style uit 16 terreine in die wyngebiede gekom. rom Bellville to Brackenfell, TygerBurger readers have had enough of reckless drivers and traffic officers who seem invisible. A commuter at the Bellville taxi rank raised alarm about taxi drivers and attendants who appear to be operating while intoxicated. "These drivers don't care about the lives and safety of their passengers, driving into oncoming traffic lanes simply to avoid waiting in traffic as everyone else must, insulting and cursing at passengers for objecting to their lives being placed at risk," the reader wrote, They called on the relevant City of Cape Town authorities to investigate. A Durbanville reader described driving on Cape Town's roads as "horrific" and says taxis are far from the only offenders. Speeding on Vissershok Road and Koeberg Road is a daily sight, as is the number of drivers using cellphones behind the wheel despite most newer cars offering hands-free options. E-hailing drivers crawling under the speed limit are causing other motorists to lose patience and overtake recklessly, and pedestrian crossings are routinely ignored. The reader also survived a recent accident in which a drunk driver slammed into the back of their vehicle at a red traffic light. "All the traffic department does is sit along roads setting up speed cameras on the downhill while all hell is breaking loose in our suburbs. We hear that there is campaigning, but nobody is in our Northern Suburbs. Why not? We are also supporters. We are also in need of safety and proper law enforcement, with drug abuse among our youth and school transport that drive reckless, just like other areas. ."
READERS AGREE A Brackenfell reader agreed with a concerned Kraaifontein resident about the spate of accidents, saying they see drivers running red lights and ignoring stop streets daily. "I might be wrong, but the reason for all this dangerous driving is the lack of traffic officers on our roads. Every year it is announced with great fanfare how many traffic officers have now qualified. But where do you see them? Maybe behind a speed camera, but nowhere else." He called for traffic officers to patrol the roads, warning that without visible enforcement, it will only get worse. It was also revealed at a Subcouncil 2 meeting a few months ago that there is limited after-hours traffic law enforcement due to a lack of overtime funding, this while drunk driving continues to escalate on the roads. Many residents are of the view that they are not even concerned about being caught driving drunk, as there is simply no enforcement. Q AND A WITH JP SMITH In the light of this TygerBurgber posed the following questions to the City's Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith. TB: How many traffic officers patrol the roads in the northern suburbs, and which suburbs does that include? This is excluding ward safety LE officers. Smith: "There are 20 officers in the morning, six in the afternoon and six at night covering seven subcouncils from Atlantis all the way through to the Northern Suburbs. Metro police and law enforcement Area North also conduct Traffic enforcement, and the Neighbourhood Safety Officers do traffic enforcement, along with by-law enforcement and crime prevention." TB: What is the City’s response to
the claim that there is no traffic officer visibility on our roads? Smith: "City of Cape Town enforcement agencies are mandated to respond to complaints. As they are required to respond to large volumes of complaints, this will impact visibility. It must also be noted that there is increasing pressure from Traffic Area North to conduct crime prevention operations on major roads as part of the Freeway management plan. This includes the N7, Jakes Gerwel, Malibongwe drive and the N1. "The decline of road safety cannot only be placed on Traffic Service, but also to every road user flouting the laws that regulate safety on our public streets. The NPA and DOJ play a crucial role in ensuring fines lead to consequence, but this is currently not happening due to an overloaded criminal justice system that is underfunded and resourced." TB: What is your comment on the increasing number of accidents on our roads? Smith: "Please advise on what data your are making this claim and we will respond." TB: Taxis driving recklessly is increasing unabated. What is the City doing to curb this effectively? Smith: "Public transport is an integral part of the transport network in the city. There are daily enforcement of taxis. In the city daily impoundment of taxis can average around 40. Traffic Services also has a dedicated Transport Enforcement Unit that primarily focuses on taxi enforcement." TB: What is the City doing to curb drunk driving that mostly occurs at night and over weekends in the northern suburbs? Smith: "There are planned operations every month to focus on drunk driving at key time frames on weekends and at night. Ward funding has been provided to assist with these operations."

Smith: "Enforcement visibility can curb reckless driving temporarily, but will not ensure long-term driver behavioural change. What will curb reckless driving is stronger action by the criminal justice system in relation to traffic fines and arrests. We cannot be expected to curb recklessness while hundreds of thousands of fines lead to no action by the NPA and DOJ. "The Safety and Security Directorate’s efforts to address the lawlessness on the roads are well documented. In addition, the City’s Traffic Service is now finalising the administrative logistics required for enforcement of the amended by-law recently gazetted. “The amendments centre on the provisions for impounding vehicles and related penalties. Now that it has been gazetted, Traffic Officers are able to impound vehicles in a number of instances, including where: the vehicle is being driven on a public road in a manner that is reckless and poses an immediate or imminent danger to the life of passengers, road users, or pedestrians. STATISTICS In the 12 months between July 2025 and June 2026, Smith says the City's Traffic Service recorded nearly four million offences and made 2 767 arrests, up from 2 255 the previous year. Drunk driving arrests rose by 32%, from 1 619 in 2024-'25 to 2 138.

New Rotary club chapter begins
A
new chapter in community service began on Saturday 8 August with the official launch and charter of the Rotary Club Groot Fisantekraal at the Durbanville Golf Club. Eugene Balie was inducted as the club’s first charter president. The club’s journey began just two months ago with six founding members who shared a passion for friendship, fellowship and “service above self”. It has already grown to nine members, as well as two Friends of Rotary. FASTEST GROWING DEVELOPMENT AREAS The new club carries the name of Groot Fisantekraal, one of the fastest growing development areas in the greater Durbanville region. With developments such as Winelands Airport, new retail facilities, Stadio University and the continued growth of Fisantekraal and Klipheuwel, the members believe there is an important role for the Rotary Club to play. “Where communities grow, the Rotary Club must be present,” said Balie. The club aims to build partnerships between business, education and community organisations while developing meaningful projects that make a sustainable difference to people's lives. Vorster returns to Badisa prepares for take-off with star-studded conference Rust-en-Vrede for 20-year milestone The social services organisation Badisa will host its 2026 conference and annual general meeting on Wednesday 9 September at Die Bron at Willowbridge Mall. Under the theme "From paper to possibilities" the event will bring together NGOs, business leaders, community organisations, volunteers and supporters for a day of inspiration, networking and practical collaboration. A simple sheet of paper can become a plan, a story, a solution or even a paper plane ready for take-off. That idea lies at the heart of this year's conference, exploring how creativity, partnerships and shared purpose can transform today's challenges into tomorrow's possibilities.

rtist and printmaker Theo Paul Vorster's own passage through two decades of linocut printmaking is aptly being celebrated with a solo exhibition at Rust-en-Vrede Art Gallery in Durbanville. This special exhibition was officially opened this past Saturday and will run until 12 September. The exhibition marks a significant milestone in Vorster’s career and brings his journey full circle, returning to the gallery where he presented his first linocut exhibition in 2006. LIFELONG PASSION Although Vorster studied printmaking and was familiar with lino from his school and university years, it was in 2006 that he fully embraced the medium. What began as preparation for a solo exhibition soon developed into a lifelong passion. Drawn to the tactile nature of carving lino, and the opportunity to introduce vibrant colour into his work, he developed a distinctive approach that has become synonymous with his artistic practice. A unique feature of Vorster’s work is his treatment of the original lino blocks. After completing an edition, he applies oil paint to the carved blocks and transforms them into artworks in their own right. In this way, both the prints and the original blocks become unique collector’s pieces.

While he occasionally works in other media, linocut printmaking remains at the heart of his artistic identity. Reflecting on this milestone, Vorster says: “Looking back, it all started with a few pieces of lino, a generous friend and a willingness to try something different. Sometimes that is all it takes to change a life.” CURATE MANY EXHIBITIONS At the opening Donavan Mynhardt, curator at Rust-en-Vrede Art Gallery, said the exhibition forms part of the gallery's 40th anniversary celebrations this year. "Besides being a masterful artist, Theo, along with Monica Ross, used to organise and curate many exhibitions here at Rusten-Vrede Gallery in the past. "There is something particularly appropiate about today's exhibition. Twenty years ago Theo was presenting his first linocuts here, and today he returns as an established and highly regarded master of the linocut. In that sense, this exhibition becomes kind of a homecoming. It allows us to look back at where we have come from, while also seeing where an artist — and art centre — can go from there," Mynhardt said. RECURRING SYMBOLS Vorster explained that his work in this exhibition explores passage through recurring symbols: figures in transit, boats between distant shores, aircraft that speak of both escape, movement and freedom, chairs that suggest waiting, and shadows that refuse to remain where they belong. These are not illustrations of journeys, but

Anyone with an interest in gardening and conservation is invited to join the upcoming garden walk starting in Kenridge Park on Saturday 22 August. The circular walk, which is a part of the Wildflower Stepping Stones Project, will be presented from 11:00 to 14:00. It will start at the Kenridge Park pollinator garden, then progress to the fynbos circle at Door-de-Kraal dam and then to the educational garden at Majik Forest and back. "This is a very special walk and the first of its kind — this time showcasing locally indigenous gardens instead of the conservation circles we manage.
It features three gardens and each have followed a different approach with regards to indigenous gardening, so it will be a really informative talk for anyone interested in gardening. All proceeds will go towards the conservation and upliftment of our public spaces where locally indigenous vegetation and wildlife is being preserved," said Dalene Theron of the Wildflower Stepping Stones Project. Programme reaches 50 unemployed youth The University of the Western Cape's (UWC) Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) has hosted seven of 14 planned training sessions at its Innovation Hub in Parow, reaching 50 unemployed young people over the past two months. The sessions form part of the Youth Unemployment Entrepreneurial Training Programme (YUETP), which the CEI runs with the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSeta) to address youth joblessness through training, business development and seed capital support. CEI director Abe Oliver said the latest group included not only UWC alumni but also honours students from Stellenbosch University, graduates from the University of the Free State and BTech graduates from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. “We have a wide range and interesting mix of youth forming part of our current incubation programme for unemployed youth, the Youth Unemployment Entrepreneurial Training Programme (YUETP), which is indicative of the need for job opportunities for our youth in this country.” Participants range from matriculants to postgraduates, with preference given to those already running side businesses.
Oliver said participants were selected based on whether they had an interest in business, with those running existing ventures given priority. “With this programme, we refine and support these businesses,” said Oliver. Oliver said South Africa's youth unemployment rate stood at 45,8% in the first quarter of 2026, climbing to 60,9% among those aged 15 to 24. Tackling those figures required training but also needed to inspire hope. “The YUETP has three tangible outcome pathways for participants to consider, namely further education, employability and entrepreneurship. It offers young people not just hope, but tangible opportunities to build sustainable futures.” The programme also builds social capital through networking and ecosystem support to help participants sustain businesses beyond the training period. The programme was first launched in 2025, when 32 participants completed it. That prompted an expansion to 50 participants this year. A follow-up poll of the 2025 group, conducted this year, found that three participants were running registered businesses, while five others had secured full-time employment while managing their own ventures.

The feeling and connotations of isolation, however, have also morphed as we have headed deeper into the 21st century. DIGITAL COCOON Now the thought of closing our doors and wearing our headphones is seen as a comfort or a necessity, where we can destress and fulfil our own personal needs after enduring a demanding working day. Since the quick but subtle decline of televisions and broadcasting as an "escape" from reality and a means to stay informed and entertained, users have been tricked into becoming addicted to seeing their desires or hobbies packaged directly to them in short clips through TikTok's, Instagram reels or YouTube shorts. Families started interacting less, while

the children became more immersed in their tablets and YouTube channels, and angsty teenagers have to understand and sometimes compare their lives to the glamorous aesthetics and filters they see when watching the Instagram stories of their friends or celebrities they admire. Now we watch, comment and "like" friends and family from afar on social media when they have weddings, celebrate births, or grieve a loved one — like voyeurs, it seems. CELLPHONE SOURCES Our cellphones have become our main source of information and entertainment. Gone are the days when the family would huddle at six to watch the latest episode of 7de Laan. Now everyone can enjoy their own distractions and retreat to the peaceful quiet of their bedrooms. I think the Covid-19 pandemic marked the crucial breaking point and awakening for a new meaning of this word to be birthed. Stranded and locked away in our houses during the height of Covid-19, our need and the time we spent on our cellphones intensified. Whether this was video calls and texts with loved ones, sending emails and attending Teams meetings, or doom-scrolling on social media whilst being flooded with the latest news and death stats, we adapted to being "happily marooned on our own social islands". ALGORITHMS THAT FEEDS All the while, the algorithms have been tracking, studying and curating a feed dedicated to our tastes, interests, likes and dislikes — and yet most people aren't seeing that these tech wizards have woven a cocoon around the users and their cellphones. This trap, however, disguises itself. So many are also quick to defend their ideologies or mock those they disagree with online in such creative fashion with GIFs and images, and yet lack the courage to spew these thoughts in real life. With the popularity and convenience of artificial intelligence, it has also impacted the way we view images, listen to music or watch videos. Now we second-guess and doubt what we see and hear more than ever. It's a strange and interesting time to be alive in 2026, but now more than ever we need to enrich the way we communicate instead of resorting to numbing ourselves to death on our own devices. - KEANAN HARMSE
COMMEMORATION: Residents gathered at Het Posthuys Museum in Main Road, Muizenberg, on Saturday 8 August to witness a cannon firing marking the 1795 Battle of Muizenberg. The event was hosted by Muizenberg Heritage in partnership with the Gri Guriqau Xam Research Institute and the Cannon Association of South Africa. Heritage Western Cape formally gazetted the battle site as a Provincial Heritage Site on Friday 27 March this year, following a nomination by the City of Cape Town’s Environmental Management Department. The battle took place when a British naval fleet attacked Dutch forces on the slopes of the Muizenberg mountains. The Dutch eventually surrendered the Cape, allowing Britain to gain control of the important Indian trade route. Another cannon firing is planned for Heritage Day, Thursday 24 September.

Cost of uniforms feels like financial exploitation I am writing this letter in the hope that it will highlight a pressing concern for single parents and lower-income families. We recently started shopping for school uniform items for our grandson, who enters Grade 1 next year. We were shocked by the prices, largely driven by the requirement to purchase plain items with compulsory school badges stitched or printed on them, including shirts, dresses, jerseys, tracksuits, and blazers. A Grade 1 learner typically wears a uniform for only 12 to 18 months before outgrowing it. Paying up to R400 for a jersey, R300 for a shirt, or R600 for a tracksuit top places an unfair financial strain on families already struggling with the cost of living. While clothing banks exist, they do not address the core issue. Why are basic school clothes so heavily branded and expensive? Why are parents not allowed to buy plain, affordable white shirts or standard items from general retail
stores? We ask why the Western Cape and National Departments of Education allow what feels like blatant financial exploitation of parents and guardians. Additionally, I would like to address the issue of school stationery and supplies. Are school stationery packages covered under fee exemptions or subsidies? If not, why are parents often pressured or required to purchase stationery directly through the school rather than sourcing cheaper alternatives independently. And why are parents expected to supply general administrative and sanitary items such as A4 paper reams and toilet paper for the school’s routine operations? Schools should operate as educational institutions, not profit-driven enterprises. I hope these matters receive urgent attention from the relevant departments as families begin preparing for the upcoming school year. A CONCERNED FUNDER OF A SINGLE MOTHER
Very kind Samaritans return lost cellphone It was two Fridays ago, I believe on 24 July, when I, with a very dear friend of ours and her three little girls walked to the little playpark corner of Gert van Rooyen and Malmesbury roads. The little girls always enjoy this playpark with the merry-go-round and the slide and were having great fun. I took a video of them with my cellular phone and went to sit down on the little couch before returning to our cottage at La Provence for refreshments. There was a knock at the front door and our on-duty security guard, seeing me, asked whether I had my cellular phone with me. I had in fact just realised that I didn’t have it in my pocket when a man with two little children beside him, drew my attention to a cellular
phone in his hand and holding it up for me to see. It was, in fact, my phone. I was completely flabbergasted, surprised, and shocked "out of my boots"! I offered him a reward which he declined, and I couldn’t stop saying thank you. A week later I had my little granddaughter with me, went to the same park and on our way home the good samaritan and his little daughter had noticed us and waited for us at our security gates. Traffic officer was a hero in a dark moment in our life A blowout incident that happened on the N1 highway about 1,5 kilometres before the N1 petrol station northbound at 05:50 on Saturday 1 August left us in a very nervous and precarious position. But fear not, Western Cape traffic officer S. Sonday came to our rescue. What a relief and stunning sight to
see the blue lights lighting up the sombre moment we were experiencing. Officer Sonday stayed right behind us and with us all the way until we were able to nurse the vehicle all the way to the petrol station which was almost an hour on the road with the terrible damage done to the tyre.

Gene Louw hockey sweeps to victory at cape co-ed cup Gene Louw Primary School’s u-13A girls’ hockey team took top honours at the Cape Co-ed u-13 Cup from 7 to 8 August, claiming the girls trophy with a thrilling shoot-out in the final match against Kenridge Primary School. In the boys’ division, Gene Louw’s u-13A team achieved third place, doing their bit to earn this school the coveted Co-ed Trophy for the highest points standing overall. Hosted across Curro Durbanville Primary School, Curro Durbanville High School, Kenridge Primary School and Gene Louw Primary School, the Cape Coed u-13 Cup saw a total of 16 boys’ teams and 16 girls’ teams compete in one of the Western Cape’s premier primary school hockey festivals.

ie Tygerberg-kinderkoor het 'n besondere prestasie behaal deur as wenners aangewys te word in die kinderkoor-afdeling van die Summa Cum Laude-kompetisie, wat oor die langnaweek by Sun City gehou is. Die koor is met 'n "Gold Level 3 Master"-uitslag bekroon. Die Summa Cum Laude-kompetisie is 'n internasionale koor- en orkeskompetisie vir die jeug wat vanuit Wene, Oostenryk, in samewerking met die Choral Celebration Network Foundation gekoördineer word. Dit was die eerste keer dat die organisasie die kompetisie buite Oostenryk aangebied het. Die beoordelaars was Saul Zaks van Denemarke, Kenneth Griffith van Boston (VSA), Pearl Shangkuan van Michigan (VSA), en Renette Bouwer en Bernard Krüger van Suid-Afrika. Kore en orkeste van Suid-Afrika, Zimbabwe, Duitsland, Oostenryk en Kanada het deelgeneem. Hierdie intieme produksie met Spaanse klassieke musiek bring twee meesters in vertolking byeen, wat musikale samewerkings van meer as twee dekades se uitverkoopte optredes deel. Bekend vir hul buitengewone wisselwerking, vertel hulle stories deur musiek, wat gehore meevoer. New production of Mamma Mia! at Artscape A new production of Mamma Mia! is coming to Artscape Opera House in Cape Town from Thursday 3 September to Sunday 11 October, followed by a run at Teatro Montecasino in Johannesburg from Friday 16 October to Sunday 22 November. The production features Amra-Faye Wright, who played Velma Kelly in Chicago the Musical on Broadway for 23 years, as Donna Sheridan. Samantha Peo joins as Donna's friend Tanya, reuniting with Wright from the 2005 and 2008 South African productions of Chicago. Cape Town audiences will know Peo from The Addams Family: the Musical and A Little Night Music. Lindy Abromowitz Sachs completes the Donna and the Dynamos trio as Rosie, with credits including Kinky Boots, Grease and The Sound of Music. Leah Mari plays Sophie Sheridan, having recently shared the lead role of Maria in My Fair Lady and originated the role of Vivian Ward in the South African production of Pretty Woman: the Musical. 10 000 turn out for Blisters
KAYLYNNE BANTOM oggy weather couldn’t dampen the spirits of the 10 000 people who turned out for this year’s Blisters for Bread Charity Family Fun Walk at Green Point Common on Sunday 16 August. Organised by the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) in association with Lucky Star, the event raised funds to support the organisation’s efforts to provide meals to thousands of vulnerable children across the Western Cape. With this year’s event drawing a record 10 000 participants, PSFA director Petrina Pakoe says they are already looking ahead to next year, with plans to build on the success and reach even more supporters. “The event is over but the support that we need is ongoing. We are grateful to everybody who came to support. Every entry feeds 23 children.”

She thanked participants and sponsors for their contribution, while appealing for continued support as preparations get underway for the next walk. Premier Alan Winde said the event is about more than bringing people together. “I love attending each year because this is such an amazing cause and the community comes together to help our kids. You cannot expect to get a good school outcome if you don’t have something in your stomach.” According to Winde, more than 500 000 learners get a school meal every day and the PSFA is one of those that help people get food in

their stomach. “People always say stomachs full, eyes closed. But I say stomachs full open brain,” said Winde. Ricardo Mackenzie, Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, reminded participants that their involvement goes beyond the walk itself. “Your entry and participation it what is giving thousands of children from this province a daily meal. “This is not just about being active, it’s about supporting our communities in need.” Kareema Allie, a representative from the BVP social club in Hanover Park, said this was their first year participating and it won’t be their last. Rugby sevens kicks off

orningstar Junior Rugby hosted its inaugural sevens rugby tournament on Monday 10 August, bringing 10 teams from various parts of Cape Town together. The teams were from Goodwood Junior Jaguars, Sakumzi Rugby Organisation, Union Milnerton Rugby Club, Connect NTK Rugby Football Club, Primrose Rugby Football Club, Helderberg Rugby Club, Edusmart Group, Kuils River Rugby Juniors and Hamediehs Rugby Football Club. The tournament aimed to give young players the opportunity to play rugby, gain exposure and develop their skills — "something that can be difficult to find in under-resourced communities", said Aldo Carelse, one of the project coordinators at Morningstar Junior Rugby. A FIRST FOR MORNINGSTAR "The event also created an opportunity for the wider Morningstar community to benefit, with residents able to trade at food stalls during the tournament. The

tournament is a first for Morningstar and forms part of a broader vision to establish Morningstar Junior Rugby as a platform where young players can access regular playing opportunities and develop through competition," he said. "For children in communities where rugby can be expensive, access to equipment, transport and regular matches are not always easy. We wanted to create an opportunity for the children, but we also wanted the broader community to benefit. "Events like this allow local people to be part of something that brings people together," Carelse said. REGULAR FEATURE "The intention is for the tournament to develop into a regular feature on the local sporting calendar," added Marcel Bosch, event and match coordinator at Morningstar Junior Rugby.
Theresa Uys, ward councillor, said it was a great pleasure for her to attend the Morningstar Junior Rugby Club’s inaugural sevens tournament. "I congratulate all the players, coaches, parents and organisers for making this event a success. When young people
come together in healthy competition, we strengthen our community, promote positive values and create opportunities for growth and development,” she said. John van Niekerk and Brent Seyfried, directors of Wingfield Motors, sponsor of Morningstar Junior Rugby, said its sponsorship is part of their commitment to support local clubs that bring people together and invest in the next generation.
