hat started as two local boys tearing up dirt mounds in the parks in Kenridge with their mountain bikes during lockdown, has turned into the dream of a lifetime. The journey of 17-year-olds Xavier “Xavi” Gomes, a matric learner at Fairmont High School, and Zak Jones, an ex-learner at Fairmont, came full circle when they were officially selected to represent South Africa at the upcoming UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Italy. The championships will take place from 26 to 30 August. Xavi and Zak, both members of the Western Cape Downhill Club, have been friends since their primary school days at Kenridge Primary School. Wyne uit Durbanville skitter in kompetisie D vir shiraz Twee wyne van die Durbanville-wynvallei is onder die Top-12-shirazwyne in die 14de Shiraz SA Challenge, wat verlede Donderdag op 'n toekenningseremonie in die Paarl bekendgemaak is. Die wyne is De Grendel op die Berg Syrah 2024 en Groot Phesantekraal Syrah 2024. Die geleentheid, bygewoon deur al die finaliste en bekendes in die wynbedryf, is voorafgegaan deur 'n proe van die 2026 finaliswyne by The Venue, gevolg deur die jaarliks Shiraz Suid-Afrikatoekenningsgeselligheid by Blacksmith’s Kitchen. Die paneel beoordelaars, gelei deur La Motte se keldermeester Edmund Terblanche, het die inskrywings oor 'n tydperk van vier dae van 23 tot 26 Junie by Nederburg in die Paarl beoordeel. Terblanche is bygestaan deur Elzette du Preez, Denzel Swarts (Zoetendal), Samarie Smith-Meletiou en Bertho van der Westhuizen (Alto Estate). "Haar kollegas het haar so mooi ondersteun terwyl ek kalm en gefokus gebly het om die klein lyfie veilig in die wereld in te bring.

Haar eerste naam "Jenete" beteken "paradys" in Arabies, en haar tweede naam is genoem na Samantha Qatar, Pick n Pay Pinehurst se bestuurder, wat haar ook met die geboorte bygestaan het.

She is one of only 88 school athletes from across South Africa to wear the green and gold. She is also one of just 22 athletes selected from the Western Cape.

KOMMENTAAR OOR DIE STAD KAAPSTAD SE BYGEWERKTE BELEID OOR BYDRAES 2026 Die Stad se eenheid vir tegniese vennootskappe (TPU) is tans besig met die bywerking van die beleid oor bydraes aan die Stad Kaapstad (beleidnommer 41636) wat oorspronklik in 2015 opgestel is. Meer oor die konsepbeleid Die Stad Kaapstad is besig om die beleid oor bydraes, wat in 2015 goedgekeur is, te hersien en by te werk. Die hersiene beleid verskaf ’n duidelike raamwerk vir hoe die Stad bydraes vanaf eksterne partye ontvang, evalueer en bestuur. Dit sluit tegniese bystand, toelaes en skenkings in. Aktiwiteite wat buite die omvang van die beleid val, soos borgskappe en nuwe inisiatiewe, word ook uiteengesit. Die bygewerkte beleid stem ooreen met huidige wetgewing, vereistes vir regeringsbestuur en die Stad se prosedures. Hierdie hersiening word gedoen omdat die bestaande beleid nie meer die kompleksiteit van bydraes wat deur die Stad ontvang word, weerspieël nie. Nuwe prosesse is oor die afgelope dekade bekendgestel, wat teenstrydighede tussen die beleid en onderliggende prosedures skep. Die bygewerkte beleid vereenvoudig prosesse, verbeter deursigtigheid, versterk regeringsbestuur en maak dit makliker vir Stadsamptenare, inwoners, besighede en ontwikkelingsvennote om die bestuur van bydraes te verstaan. Waarom word die beleid bygewerk? Die beleid word bygewerk om: 1. met huidige wetgewing, vereistes vir regeringsbestuur en die Stad se prosedures ooreen te stem. 2. die nuwe standaardbedryfsprosedures en riglyne wat sedert die opstel van die oorspronklike beleid ontwikkel is, te weerspieël. 3. teenstrydighede en verouderde bepalings uit die 2015-beleid te verwyder. 4. deursigtigheid, doeltreffendheid, risikobestuur en gladde sakeverloop te verbeter. 5. duideliker riglyne aan Stadsamptenare en eksterne belanghebbendes te verskaf. Verwagte uitkomste Die hersiene beleid bied ’n eenvoudiger, duideliker en meer konsekwente raamwerk vir die bestuur van bydraes aan die Stad. Die beleid sal na verwagting administratiewe vertragings verminder, voldoening versterk, wetlike en ﬁnansiële risiko’s minimaliseer, en samewerking tussen die Stad en organisasies wat munisipale programme en projekte wil ondersteun, verbeter. Die hersiene beleid gee ’n duidelike uiteensetting van: • wat ’n bydrae behels; • watter aktiwiteite buite die omvang van die beleid val; • hoe bydraes versoek, geëvalueer en aanvaar kan word; • hoe bydraes met die Stad se prioriteite en wetgewing ooreen moet stem; en • waar verdere leiding deur middel van onderliggende prosedures en riglyne beskikbaar is.

frikaans public speaking was taken to new heights with the Nou Praat Jy! national competition held at Curro Durbanville High School recently. The second edition of Nou Praat Jy! was held on 30 July, drawing school teams from as far afield as Graaff-Reinet, Lutzville and Porterville. According to the organisers, Joline de Klerk and Maritsa Smit, both Afrikaans teachers at Curro Durbanville, the competition speaks to something bigger than the day itself. “In a world crowded with opinions and noise, the ability to think for yourself and to express those thoughts clearly and confidently matters more than ever. Competitions like Nou Praat Jy! give learners exactly that opportunity in a language as rich and diverse as the country in which it is spoken,” De Klerk said. “What makes this competition different is simple: We ask participants to speak in the Afrikaans that lives within them, not the Afrikaans found in a textbook,” she said.

KYK NOORD! THEME Last year's competition celebrated 100 years of Afrikaans. This year's theme, Kyk Noord!, encouraged learners to look ahead rather than back, with paired speeches presented around the theme. The duet format encouraged conversational delivery while giving regional dialects the opportunity to shine. The competition was contested in a junior category for Grade 8 and 9 learners, and a senior category for Grade 10 to 12 learners – in both Afrikaans Home Language and First Additional Language divisions. The winning teams in each category received R10 000. The competition formed part of Curro Durbanville's Kulturafees from 30 July to 2 August, which featured performances by Albert Pretorius, Schalk Joubert, Margit MeyerRödenbeck, Deon van Zyl, Alfred Adriaan, Francois van Coke and Karen Zoid with Anton Eloff. On Friday 21 August the final show, the Band Battle final, will be presented at the

ie kwiltgilde Kaapse Kwiltgenot van Durbanville het onlangs sy 40ste bestaansjaar met 'n kleurvolle oggendtee gevier — omring met die uitsonderlike kwilts wat lede gemaak het. Ina Meyer van Glentana was die gasspreker by die geleentheid op Saterdag 25 Julie. Sy was 'n stigterslid van die Kaapse Kwiltgenot en het staaltjies vertel van die beginjare van die gilde.

KWILTGILDE SE 40STE JAAR KLEURVOL GEVIER

Sy het vertel van die projek wat die gilde jare gelede aangepak het, naamlik om deurnag kwiltwerk op aflostye te doen. 'n Paar van die voltooide dekens is daarna aan die Durbanville-kinderhuis geskenk.

STORIES AGTER KWILTS Sy het 'n paar van haar eie kwilts saamgebring en die stories daaragter met gaste gedeel. Meyer het in 1977 kwiltwerk begin doen, en het sedert 1987 begin klasgee in laslapen kwiltwerk. In 1996 het sy as beoordelaar gekwalifiseer en het al verskeie kwiltkompetisies in Suid-Afrika, Zimbabwe en Dubai, asook Namibië se eerste kwiltkompetisie, beoordeel. Sy het die sonderlinge status van meesterkwilter. Meyer het in 2022 'n Pro Dedicatetoekenning van die Suid-Afrikaanse Kwiltgilde ontvang. Van haar werk is al plaaslik, asook internasionaal, uitgestal. Sy was al die voorsitter van die Goeie Hoop Kwiltgilde in die Kaap, die Jakaranda Kwiltgilde in Pretoria, en is tans die voorsitter van die Outeniekwa Kwiltgilde in George. LEEF VOORT IN HARTE Linda Coetzee, wat die inisiatief geneem het om die gilde te stig, was ook 'n eregas. "Die kinkels, kreukels en kwinkslae van die Kaapse Kwiltgenot leef voort in baie harte en huise en die kwilts maak harte bly," het Coetzee gesê. Volgens haar hoef Suid-Afrikaanse kwilters vir niemand terug te staan nie. Die gilde het selfs 'n brief van gelukwensing uit Montana in die VSA ontvang van nog 'n stigterslid, Helena Myburgh.

STIKDAG GEHOU Die Kaapse Kwiltgenot hou ook elke jaar 'n stikdag, waartydens Little Quilts of Love gemaak word. Dit is klein kwiltjies wat geskenk word as 'n blyk van troos aan ouers wat hul pasgebore baba verloor het. 'n Paar lede was die gelukkige wenners van gelukstrekkings van onder meer geskenkbewyse, geskenk deur Textile City en Fabric Friends in Bellville, asook nuttige geskenkpakke vir kwilters, geskenk deur Bernina Northern Suburbs. Die oggend is afgesluit met lede wat gespog het met hoe die kwilts vorder waaraan hulle tans werk. Die voltooide Little Quilts of Love is ook vertoon. The area around the historical fountain in Durbanville has been cleaned. The area had been overgrown with grass and poplar shoots from the trees in the adjoining yard. The restoration of the area is now also planned. With the aid of the Rowland and Leta Hill Trust, Durbanville Heritage Society obtained the service of Christian Action Network (CAN) to help with the cleaning of the area around the fountain, behind the Durbanville Children’s Home. This fountain is the origin of the establishment of an outspan, which led to the establishment of the village called Pampoenkraal, from which the town of Durbanville was born. “Heritage authorities will now be consulted for the removal of the asbestos roof covering the well, painting, fixing of the hinges en removal of the unsightly steel mounting, which at some stage was put up for solar panels. The solar panels have been stolen long ago,” says Georina Westraadt, deputy chair of the Durbanville Heritage Society. “Furthermore, the plaque with the description of the significance of this place will be replaced as the current one is damaged and illegible.”

Local woman is boerewors ﬁnalist

Durbanville home cook was surprised when she was elected to be in the Top 10 in the 2026 Championship Boerewors competition. When Amoré Stemmet (32) considered entering the competition, she asked herself one question: “Why not?” “I entered thinking it would be a fun experience,” she says. “I don’t think anyone, myself included, expected me to make it this far.” LAUGHTER The first reaction of her family and friends was laughter. “I’m simply a girl with a passion for cooking, so the thought of me entering a boerewors competition sounded quite funny to my family and friends.” The laughter quickly turned to pride as Amoré progressed through the competition. She will join the other finalists at the grand finale in Cape Town on 15 August, when the 2026 Championship Boerewors

FELT INSPIRED Amoré, a project manager at a business fibre provider, has always loved cooking and entertaining and felt inspired to develop her own traditional boerewors recipe. “I wanted to create a boerewors that tastes familiar and comforting, but still has enough character to make you want another bite,” she says. Getting the recipe right took plenty of experimentation. “With boerewors, it can be tempting to keep adding more spices, but sometimes the biggest challenge is knowing when to stop,” she says. All recipes must comply with strict guidelines for traditional boerewors. For Amoré it’s the quality of these ingredients and finding the right balance between the allowed meat, fat, seasoning and liquid that make good boerewors. In the run-up to the finale, she is focusing on producing the same result every time. “I’m trying to stay calm and enjoy the experience,” she says. “I never expected to get this far, so I want to make the most of every moment.”

On 9 August 1956, 20 000 women marched through the streets of Pretoria with a simple yet powerful message: “Wathint’ Abafazi, Wathint’ Imbokodo — you strike a woman, you strike a rock”. This happened long before I was born. I was fortunate enough to be raised by another remarkable woman: my own mother. She taught me resilience, compassion and quiet strength, not through speeches, but through the example she set every single day. Women like her, and the thousands who marched before her, helped shape the world we have the privilege of living in today. I say this without taking anything away from the brave men and fathers who also have a special place in our lives. But Sunday belonged to the women who have carried families, communities, businesses and our country forward, often without fanfare and always with extraordinary courage.

THEY HELP ALL OF US NAVIGATE IT WITH WISDOM, EMPATHY AND DETERMINATION

To the women of 1956 who marched and refused to be silenced, and to the women of today who continue to embody that same spirit: thank you. The sales teams opening doors and building trusted relationships. The editors shaping narratives with precision and heart. The digital teams growing audiences across the country. Nadat ek die amptenaar ingelig het ek wil aansoek doen om 'n toelae, word ek aangesê om Maandag 21 Junie terug te kom. Let wel, net 'n handjievol mense het in daardie stadium gewag om gehelp te word. Op 21 Junie daag ek om 07:00 op en gaan na die ingang waar 'n sekuriteitsbeampte my voorkeer. Ek wys hom die papier wat ek die vorige Vrydag van 'n beampte gekry het en word toegelaat om op 'n stoel by die ingang te sit. Tussen halfnege en nege-uur word die aansoekers ingelig dat slegs diegene met 'n afspraak gehelp gaan word. Die res moet afsprake maak. Weer eens terug in 'n ry vir 'n afspraak. Tydens my beurt om 'n afspraak te maak, lig ek die beampte in dat ons nuwe aansoekers onkundig is met die prosedure en sy my al die vorige Vrydag van 'n afspraakdatum kon voorsien het of ingelig het dat ek eers een moet maak. Die afspraak word toe gemaak vir Maandag 20 Julie. Kwart voor ses neem ek my plek in die ry in — wat amper strek tot by Ou Paarlweg. Tussen die gesels deur verneem ek dat party mense daar geslaap het of al van 03:00 gearriveer het in die hoop om gehelp te

word. Teen 06:20 word ons ingedeel in drie groepe — navrae, vingerafdrukke en laastens, aansoekers. Aansoekers moet binne gaan sit en hul beurt afwag om 'n nommer te kry. Aangesien ek Vrydag nie weer vir 'n hele dag daar kan sit nie, sal ek maar nog 'n tydjie sonder Sassa se inkomste moet klaarkom en sal my kinders hul moeder vir nog 'n rukkie moet onderhou. ‘n Sassa-aansoek is 'n absolute nagmerrie met 'n stelsel wat nie 100% werk nie, asook kantore wat onderbeman is. Dalk, as die ministers 'n slag uit hul aircon-kantore en luukse voertuie kom en 'n slag saam met Sassa-aansoekers in die donker, koue en soms reën in rye kom staan, sal hulle besef waardeur applikante vir 'n aalmoes moet gaan om darem vir 'n gedeelte van die maand te kan eet. The project initially caused unnecessary concern and frustration among residents due to shortcomings in public participation and communication. It was at this point that Roxanne's intervention proved invaluable. She took the time to meet with residents, listened to our concerns, and facilitated engagement between the project manager, the ward councillor Anthony Bernadie, and the community. Her calm, professional approach helped restore confidence in the process and ensured that all parties worked together towards a practical and mutually acceptable solution. Thank you Sixty60 driver for you kindness during break down I wanted to share a small but meaningful moment that reminded me just how much kindness still exists in our community. Last night I broke down on Jip de Jager near Loevenstein and found myself standing outside my car waiting for friends to come and help. Out of nowhere, a Checkers Sixty60 driver pulled over. He had already ﬁnished his shift and was heading home, but when he noticed me, he actually turned

back to come check on me. He asked if I was okay and when I explained that help was on the way, he still offered to stay with me until my friends arrived. I was honestly so touched that someone would take time out of their evening like that – not just to stop, but to genuinely care. I even worried that I might be delaying him, only for him to tell me he was already done for the day. What stayed with me most was what he said: “We

need to help one another.” Simple words, but he had already shown exactly what that means through his actions. It was such a powerful reminder that there are still good people out there — and that people, at their core, are good. Community Health Day held in Fisantekraal T

he community health day presented by the Rotary Club of Durbanville brought free dental, eye and general care to 130 patients in Fisantekraal. The event's success rested on the efforts of 80 volunteers, who contributed their time, professional skill and compassion throughout the day. Volunteers were drawn from the Rotary Club of Durbanville itself and members of the wider community, as well as dental students from the University of the Western Cape. The students performed extractions, fillings and cleaning. They also supplied toothpaste and toothbrushes to each patient. EYE CARE SCREENING Eye care screening was done by the team of the Rotary Club of Melkbosstrand, while nurses from Tygerberg Hospice assisted with blood pressure and blood glucose tests. "The Fisantekraal Clinic, which made its facility available for this event, and Groot Phesantekraal View Spar also played a key role — providing lunch for the volunteers, including chicken burgers, fries and wonderful dessert doughnuts," said Graham Harmsworth, president of the Rotary Club of Durbanville. The Deadly Dozen is a global hybrid fitness competition that challenges athletes through a combination of 12 400m runs and 12 strength and functional-based exercises like lunges, goblet squats, bear crawls, and overhead carry exercises, including movements that test endurance, power, grit, and mental resilience. Athletes from around the world compete to qualify for the world championships. “I have always been sporty and grew up playing competitive sport, so being active has always been part of who I am. Over the years, that evolved into a love for hybrid training and taking on challenges like HYROX, half-marathons, open water swimming, and now the Deadly Dozen competition. For me, the events are not really the end goal; they are what keeps me motivated and gives me something to work towards. “I never enter a competition to be better than anyone else; I simply want to be 1% better than I was in my last race, which is why qualifying for the Deadly Dozen World Championship was such a huge surprise to me. “Training is about so much more than physical fitness. It is one of the best things I do for my mental and emotional wellbeing,” she said.

Back-to-back champions Durbanville Cricket Club was again crowned the back-to-back Premier League champions at the annual Western Province Cricket Associations Awards on Saturday, 7 August in the Presidential Suite at Newlands. The trophies the club received for the 2025/26 season are Third Division B and A winners, Premier League winners, Club Cricket Most Sporting team and WP Club of the Year. They won the Premier League four times in seven years and the home ground is Sports Way in Durbanville, featuring provincial-rated fields and the Ed Fivaz Main field. “We currently have eight men’s teams, two woman’s teams and two veterans’ teams. Our junior club is also the biggest in the WP with a membership that exceeds 220 juniors,” says Morne de Beer, club chairman, who accepted the trophies on behalf of the club. The annual prize giving of the club was end of March and the club's awards evening is held soon after the seasons ends because some of their players leave for the United Kingdom to play cricket in the off-season. Durbanville has also won the CSA National T20 Community Cup in 2024. “Like in the 2024/25 the league was a tight affair between us, Rondebosch and Western Province Clubs. Our coach Seand Ackermann and captain Fritz de Beer have been sensational in their leadership and guiding our Premier side to back-toback champions of the Premier league. Players of the club that have represented WP and the Proteas are Edward Moore, George Linde, Pieter Malan and Janneman Malan. Past WP representatives are Jody Lawrence and Janneman Malan, Pieter Malan represented Boland,” De Beer says.
