Book sale at Badisa needs Andries Olivier foster care parents

elebrating World Foster Day, Badisa focused on the difference foster parents make in the life of children in their care. "In South Africa, where approximately 300 000 children are currently in foster care, World Foster Day highlights not only the urgent need for more foster parents but also the profound impact foster care can have on a child’s life," says Alma Botha, social services manager at Badisa. “World Foster Day, celebrated globally on 31 May, gives us the opportunity to raise awareness, celebrate foster families and create sustainable change by encouraging communities to support children currently in care,” she says. According to its 2023-'24 annual report, Badisa provided foster care supervision services to 4 227 children, with nearly half (49%) already placed in permanent foster care. “The South African foster care system is far from perfect, but its strength lies in ordinary people stepping in to make an extraordinary difference,” says Botha.

LACK OF FEEDBACK These challenges are made more complex by a lack of feedback between organisations, delays in administrative processes and the emotional strain families face. “Foster parents often feel uncertain, especially when there’s a possibility of reunification with the biological family,” Botha says. Social workers also help prepare and train foster parents, ensuring they understand the realities of caring for children who may have experienced trauma. Says Botha, “Children in foster care may struggle to adapt as a result of emotional or behavioural challenges. Our job is to journey with the foster families through training, home visits and family conferences to make sure everyone feels supported and heard.” While misconceptions about foster care persist, Botha wants the public to see it for what it truly is: a powerful tool for healing. “Foster care is about giving children and families a second chance. NEED MORE FOSTER FAMILIES She recalls a case that was reported to their office involving two minor children, aged five and eight, who were living in unfavourable circumstances with their biological parents due to substance abuse, neglect, and exposure to violence. “Initially placed with safety parents, they later moved into foster care with a trusted community member. Today, the children are thriving emotionally and academically, while maintaining healthy family connections.” “It’s stories like these that demonstrate how foster care can completely change the trajectory of a child’s life,” Botha explains. Foster care in South Africa is guided by the Children’s Act (2005), which prioritises the best interests of the child and encourages kinship care, by placing children with relatives or community members who can provide a sense of continuity and belonging. According to Botha, kinship placements are often the most effective form of alternative care. “Social workers are managing

he community of Durbanville and wider deeply mourns the passing of Leon Erasmus, beloved principal of Fairmont High School for the past eight and a half years. Erasmus (59) passed away on Friday 6 June after a long and courageous battle with cancer. The immense impact he had on the lives of children, parents, colleagues and friends was widely praised in messages of condolences posted on Facebook from all over the country and even from a school in Denmark. Fairmont High School posted the sad news on Facebook on Friday. IMMENSE STRENGTH "Mr Erasmus was a man of immense strength, integrity and honour. He led our school with unwavering dedication and a deep sense of purpose, showing us - his family, our staff, students, and the wider community - what it truly means to fight. “Fight for others. Fight for good. Fight for progress. And above all, fight to live. Today, we mourn the loss of a remarkable leader and human being. But more than that, we celebrate a life that left a lasting mark on each of us. His legacy of courage, compassion and excellence will continue to inspire Fairmont for years to come.

"While our hearts are saddened, we are deeply grateful to have had Mr Erasmus lead us all. He was not only at the helm of our school; he was at the heart of it. His legacy will live on in the values he upheld and the lives he touched, his guidance, vision, and spirit will forever remain part of our fabric.We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, daughters, son-in-law, grandson, mother and all loved ones during this incredibly difficult time," the post reads. Erasmus took the helm as principal at Fairmont High in January 2017 after the previous principal, Ron Dingley, retired the previous year. He grew up in Queenstown in the Eastern Cape and acquired his BA (Phys ED) HDE at the University of the Free State. He started his teaching career at Queen’s College in Queenstown in 1990 and became head of department and second deputy headmaster at Queen’s College. In 2004 he was appointed as senior deputy headmaster at Rondebosch Boys’ High School and in 2013 principal of Durban High School, one of KwaZuluNatal’s top public schools. CHARACTER BUILDING In an interview with TygerBurger at the time of his appointment at Fairmont High, he stressed his vision for Fairmont High's learners, that "discovering you true potential and what is important in

your life, is essential and then reaching out to others will come naturally". He continued that he believed character building should be the school's main focus area. "If you are someone of great character, then your priorities will be in place," he said to TygerBurger ("New principal takes helm at Fairmont HS", 25 January 2017). Several preprimary, primary and high schools in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, as well as schools in Durban and Stenhus Gymnasium in Holbæk, Denmark, left messages of condolences on Facebook. "We mourn the loss of an inspiring leader whose strength, integrity, and vision touched so many lives. “Many in our community came to know and admire Mr Erasmus during his time as the 14th headmaster at Durban High School, where he led with the same courage and compassion that continued to define his leadership at Fairmont. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Fairmont staff and students, and all who were privileged to know him," was posted by Durban Preparatory High School. "From the very first time we met him, Mr Erasmus made the impression of not only an extremely committed, competent and respected front figure for Fairmont High School but also a very pleasant, warm, humble and well-liked human being," Lea

Other speakers were Adv Phyllis Vorster of AfriForum, who discussed gender-based violence, and Daniel Snyman, an occupational therapist who talked about how to help children with sensory and emotional regulation in difficult situations. "During my years in practice, I've come to understand that divorce is not simply a legal ending. It is a relational rupture that leaves lasting imprints - not just on the separating couple, but on the child, the extended family and even the community around them. It reaches into the classroom, the clinic, the court and even the workplace. And when not handled with care, it can affect the next generation too," she said. According to the latest divorce statistics in South Africa, between 2021 and 2022 there was a 10,9% increase in the number of divorces, rising to 20 196 divorce

orders, according to Bredekamp. "This represents a notable upward shift pointing to the ongoing fragility of marital unions in our country. A significant gender disparity was observed in divorce initiation - 55,8% of divorces were filed by women, while 32,2% were initiated by men. Among the population groups, women of colour had the highest proportion of female plaintiffs, standing at 63,2. In terms of age, the median age at divorce was 46 years for men and 42 years for women. The peak age range for divorce across all population groups was 35 to 49 years for men and 35 to 39 years for women," she said. "This aligns with midlife transitions where family, work and personal strain often converge. In examining marriage duration, 42,2% of divorces occurred within the first 10 years of marriage, highlighting that the early years remain the most vulnerable period for marital dissolution. The impact of children is considerable - 55,3% of divorces involved children under the age of 18, affecting a reported 18 850 children," she said. ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCE "It is an adverse childhood experience contributing to trauma symptoms, hypervigilance, emotional numbing and intrusive memories of parental conflict. Children face various complications when their parents get divorced, such as relocation, changes in schooling, diminished access to one parent and often financial instability. "This crisis is particularly acute in divorces that occur within the first 10 years of marriage, when children are at a crucial stage of development. During these years, children need consistency and emotional security to form stable attachments with their parents. Young children struggling to make sense of their parents' divorce often internalise blame, develop abandonment fears and later struggle with trust and relational stability," she said. Dream big and be the agent of your own life In a world shaped by systems one's mindset is the one thing that can set one free, and set one apart. It's not your background, your bank account, or even your education that determines your future; it's the way you think. All these things are useless when the mind is blind. When you dare to think differently, to question what's around you and craft your own path you step into your power. That's what truly separates those who succeed from those who settle. I learnt this early, not from textbooks but from watching people accept the life they never chose. Where I come from in the Boland it's common to see young people finish school only to end up in predictable jobs on farms, in restaurants, behind counters. Honest work, yes, but not always born from dreams. Too often it's just what's available. Just what's handed to you. But what if we didn't accept what's handed to us? At the age of 10 I began dreaming of a life beyond what I saw, beyond my colourful essays. I didn't know where exactly I was going, but I knew I couldn't allow my environment to shrink my imagination. I crafted a universe in my mind, one where I could break cycles, define my own success and live with purpose. Even at this age I do that. Life is by no means easy. Life tests you in subtle and serious ways, through finances, health, limited access, just to name a few. It throws you a general dish, a one-size fits all blanket and tells you to be grateful.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO BE DIFFERENT; IT’S OFTEN YOUR GREATEST STRENGTH. But I refused to accept the idea that this was all there was. And that refusal became my strength. My father once told me "smooth seas never made skilled sailors, and when you are born into a system your first act of freedom is to question it." That quote has never left me. It's guided the way I move through the world. Systems, political, economic, educational, the media don't just shape what's possible for us, but how we think what is possible. And if you don't break free of the script you were handed you'll play a role you never auditioned for. June is Youth Month and this year's theme, "Skills for the Changing World, Empowering Youth for Meaningful Economic Participation", points us towards the future. Mindset is the hidden engine driving our choices, fuelling our creativity and expanding our vision. It's that small spark that says "there must be more than this." Thoughts are powerful. They come from what we consume in our conversations, our culture, our environment. But when you start thinking independently everything changes. Who benefits when property prices explode? An absurd budget yes, a home bought in 1990 for R132 000 is now suddenly R4 million worth. Most of us could afford a home of R130 000 in 1990 but not a home of R4 million today. In the meantime most became pensioners too, and some with zero pension. So what have gone up in the last 30 years of bond period? Building, material and labour cost? So my home still is worth R130 000 because we could afford it, not the property, but the monthly bond payback premiums. Also, are the property marketing companies flairing up the value over the years by comparing property values with replacement cost to earn more sales commissions? The difference between a R130 000 property and a R4 million property monthly bond premiums is way out and for most of us unaffordable! Those fixed tariff benefits can't be legal, because why do pay a monthly property tax? For what? We bought the plots to build, according to the municipal rules and regulations, by the developer or private owner and it's registered on our name, so why the property tax?Is their a binding contract between

home owners and the municipality? Does the contract make room for future additional tarrifs? No, because they think they own us and can do as they feel and get away with it because they think they are every propery owners government. I declare here and publicly that I refuse to pay an extra monthly tariff fee for clean-up. In many property owners's opinion, it's daylight robbery and people are fast asleep (the frog in already boiling water). The City "Masters" must choose: either the property tax go or all the extra tariffs go. I clean my street in front of my paid-up property myself. We are not the waisters. Us property owners are not going to fall for or accept it a communist fools game. We're not here to subsidice the poorly controlled influx of "illegal alien immigrants" or growing squatter camps. That's not our problem. Most of us live on tight budgets and have our own free choice of living standards - surviving on our own leftover savings, not free handouts. Rus in vrede, Christa Pligsgetrou en hardwerkend was Christa Cronjé van Parow-Noord haar lewe lank. In die jare sewentig was sy baie lank die saalsekretaresse by Tygerberg-hospitaal se hartsaal A6, waar sy 'n leeftyd se vriende gemaak het. Prof. Helmut Weich was haar hoof. Sy was ook een van die eerste mense wat met prof. Chris Barnard gepraat het nadat hy destyds die wêreld se eerste hart oorgeplant het. Dit was in 1974, toe Barnard direk ná die operasie die hoofkardioloog by die Tygerberg-hospitaal, prof. Helmut Weich, bel met dié groot nuus. Baie lank daarna, toe ek as pasiënt by prof. Weich se privaat praktyk was en hy hoor ons is susters, het hy met groot lof van A6 se mev. Christa Cronje gepraat, met baie groete ook aan haar. Kort daarna is hy oorlede. Nou onlangs met my suster se opname in die Mediclinic Panorama se hoësorgeenheid, het sy seun, ook prof. Helmut Weich, die laaste prosedure op haar uitgevoer. Christa is op 19 Mei oorlede. Sy sou op 9 Julie 90 word. Christa was 'n bekende by die markte in Milnerton, Parow en ook by die oudhedehandelaars daar. Sy was baie gesond, het geen kroniese medikasie gebruik nie, het geen oog- of gehoorprobleme gehad nie, maar het begin ly onder rugpyne, wat haar mobiliteit en kragte verswak het. Cronjé was die ensiklopedie en dagboek van haar hele groot familie ... en 'n staaltjieverteller van formaat! Sy was werklik legendaries in haar kringe. Rus in vrede, Christa! Potjiekos heats up for a good cause 245

he enticing aroma of simmering stews and the sound of laughter filled the air as Durbanville residents gathered for a potjiekos competition that did more than just satisfy appetites - it fueled a community's spirit. The potjiekos competition held by Andries Olivier Durbanville Quadriplegic Centre drew a vibrant crowd and raising significant funds to support the centre's daily operations. Organised by residents Heiron Joseph, Fizel de Vries, and Freddie van der Walt, the event featured 16 teams competing in the cook-off. “It’s heartwarming to see our community come together like this,” said Heiron Joseph, one of the organisers. “The support means the world to us. Lyons from the Morningstar Feeding Project, Rudolph Maree, and Kim Lu faced the challenge of selecting winners from the array of flavourful entries. The winners was the team of Ashley Cloete, Jacques Cloete, Martin Roode, and Gerrit Sander with a tomato bredie pot and wholewheat beer bread. In second place was the team of Tobie Grové, Mari Grové and Marja Smit with a sweet and sour pork pot. Hein Reid and Malcolm Isaacs were third with an ostrich pot. This fundraising competition provided 245 meals to children and residents in the Morningstar

community. The meals were distributed in collaboration with the Morningstar Feeding Project. Andries Olivier Durbanville Quadriplegic Centre, managed by its 12 quadriplegic and paraplegic residents, relies heavily on fundraising initiatives and community support, as government subsidies cover only about 12% of its expenses. "A heartfelt thank you to all our sponsors, donors and supporters for your generous contributions toward the success of our potjiekos competition and for helping us provide meals to the Morningstar community," Joseph said. BICYCLE LEAGUE CHAMPS CROWNED AT DEVONBOSCH

highly successful Bicycle League season wrapped up with an exciting Western Cape Regional Final on Saturday 24 May at Devonbosch. Twenty primary schools from four districts competed in a spirited showdown, showcasing strong individual and team performances. Schools competed in genderbased teams, with the top five individual results per school combined to determine overall standings. Gene Louw and Eversdal claimed the boys’ and girls’ titles, scoring 850 and 830 points respectively. In the boys’ division, Mikro placed second with 750 points, followed by Applewood from Elgin (598). The girls’ competition saw a tie for second between Mikro and Bruckner de Villiers of Idas Valley (both on 740 points), with Eversdal taking the win. Independent riders from non-participating schools were also included. Backed by the EduInnov8 Foundation and run by

Cycle2Ride, the Bicycle League is about more than racing. A structured qualification system supports fair growth, with cluster, district and regional events. Categories are capped at 40 riders, and the top five in each earn podium medals. This season, 25 events were held, leading to the finals. Based on the ShortTrack/XCC format, the League uses short, non-technical courses and quick races to keep cycling accessible. Events are held midweek, making it easier for schools to participate. “Courses are beginner-friendly but exciting, and midweek racing fits into the school calendar,” says programme director Meurant Botha. Endorsed by Cycling South Africa and Schools Cycling South Africa (SCSA), the League creates a development pathway for official SCSA provincial and national competitions. Over the past three years, cycling development in the Bottelary Hills region has seen remarkable progress. Ten riders
