“Therewere two voyagesback-to-back. Iwentonthe secondvoyage with them —inborrowed running clothes, as I didn’t knowI would ever be allowed to participate,” she explains.

“Workinginthe expedition cruise industry means living alife where no two days are ever thesame.Iamused to the unexpected —but nothing quite compared to whatlay ahead. What began as asimple idea, soon grew into something far more extraordinary: Iwas goingtorun ahalf marathon in Antarctica.

“We set sail fromUshuaia, crossing the legendary Drake Passage —astretch of ocean infamous for its wild, unpredictable seas.This time, however, we were lucky. Thecrossing was unusuallycalm, almost as if the ocean itself was giving us permission to pass.”

“Beforereaching Antarctica, we followed strictbiosecurity protocols —every layer, everybag, every shoelace carefully cleanedtoprotect the fragile ecosystem we were abouttoenter. Even our running shoes hadtobespotless.

“We arrivedatKing George Island justbeforerace day. My role as first aid responder meantworking side by side with the Marathon Tours doctor constantly on alert to protect everyrunner againstthe brutal coldand unforgiving conditions, where even asmall mistake could quickly become dangerous. Only once everyone else was ready, did Iallow myself to switchroles—from caregiver to competitor.

“The first race day was surreal. In freezingtemperatures, we peeled off heavy expedition layers and stood at the start lineinrunning gear —surrounded by nothingbut rough gravel, ahandful of researchstationhutss, and avast, unforgiving landscape,” she says.

NOORDINARYRACE

“The course consisted of repeated loops due to environmental regulations, winding past research stations and marked water points. But thiswas no ordinary race. Along the way, penguins waddled across the path as if they owned it,and fur seals emerged from the icy ocean.

“The weather refused to settle —gusting winds, falling snow, and sudden burstsof sunlight all played their part.

“When Ifinally crossed the finish line, it hit me: Ihad just completed my veryfirst half marathon —without formal training and in borrowed running clothes —inone of the most remoteplaces on earth!”

NOTIMEFORTRAINING

“I had no time for training on board while working. We work up to 15 hoursa day on some days and the lastthing you feel like doing is going to the gymnasium after along day,” she says.

“I finished tenth overall and came third among the women. But the numbers hardly mattered. What stayed with me was the experience —the challenge, the unpredictability, and the quiet beauty of Antarctica. Jeken is leaving for the USA in aweek’stime to attend some additional training before she heads up for the Arctic season (the North) where she is hoping to run the half marathon thereaswell.

TheBasadi-Women Growth Fund isa R90 million funding initiative by Business Partners Limited that was established by the Rupertfamily in 1981.

The Basadi-Women Growth Fund provides tailored finance ofbetween R250000 and R5 million to help womenowned small and medium businesses grow and scale.

“It is specifically designed for viable businesses that may not qualify for traditional funding, and alsooffers added support such as mentorship, networkingand flexible repayment options. The financecan be used for property acquisition, working capital,

assetor equipmentfinance, acquisitions or takeovers,start-upfranchises or as replacement finance,”said René Botha, regional investment managerand spokesperson for the Basadi-Women Growth Fund.

ArtGallery in Wellington Road in Durbanville over the years, is currently exhibited at the gallery.

The exhibition titled Bad Kitties Doing Bad Things is one of three new exhibitions at the gallery and can be viewed until2 May.

“This group exhibition takes an unconventional approach in keeping with our 40thyear celebrations,” says Donavan Mynhardt, curator. “Rust-en-VredeGallery and ClayMuseum is centrally located in Durbanville and shares its borderswith variousoffices and apartments. Botanical-inspiredsculptural knobs rest atop vessels of varying shapes and sizes, with lids andbases thatcan be paired in multiple ways, says Mynhardt.

“You areinvited to select your own combinations and experiment with how concave, convex andlinear silhouettes interact with the sculptural forms. In doingso, you shape your own relationships between form, surface and detail —becoming an active participant in thecreation of each unique artwork.”

TheCityofCape Town hasadvised residentsthat there-opening of theKillarney CommunityRecycling Centre hasbeen delayed. Thefacilityisnow expectedtoresume operations in May.

Easter Sunday usually promises apeaceful morning, chocolatey treats, and perhaps a few family traditions. This year, Idecided to take aleisurely walk along the beach with my three-year-old, expecting to enjoy the cool weather and maybe spotsome earlysigns of spring.What Ididn’t expect was thelittered landscapethat greeted us. Chocolate wrappers, foil fromEaster treats,and colourful plasticpackaging were scatteredacross the sand, remnants of Easter celebrations gone awry. My little one, blissfully unaware of the environmental implications, sawa treasure troveofshiny wrappers and declared it an Easter egg hunt ofhis own. With joy and curiosity, he picked up wrapper after wrapper, giggling at the colourful “finds” along the shoreline. I, on the other hand, was confronted with the stark reality: what should havebeen abeautiful walk along aclean beach had turned into amini clean-up mission. Theirony is striking. Easter chocolates and treats are far from cheapthesedays, yetpeople seem to treat their packaging as disposable. Foil, plastic, and paper wrappers—materials thatcould be recycled or at least disposedofresponsibly —end up scattered across public spaces.

As Iwatched my little one carefully collect shiny wrappers, Icouldn’thelp but think: if every family took even a few minutes to be mindful about their waste, our public spaces would reflect the joy of the holiday, not the carelessness of leftover packaging. Easter is meant to be acelebration, not an environmental burden. And if we model responsible behaviour for the next generation, perhaps future walks along the beach will be filled withchocolate treatsinour hands, not scattered foilatour feet

Next year, Iplan to bring along asmall bagand gloves, ready for any “Easter treasure” that finds its way to the sand And maybe, just maybe, more peoplewill start thinkingtwice before letting their holiday celebrations contribute to litter. Iamwriting to express my deep frustration at the trafficchaos that unfolded acrossthe city overthe recent Easter weekend. Whilethe holidayperiod is always busy, this year’s gridlock wasnothingshort of alarming.

From theN1 and R300 to smaller arterial roads, drivers facedhours of unnecessarydelays, confusion,and in some cases, dangerous conditions.

It is clearthat the combination of increasedholiday travel,wet weather,and impatientdrivers created aperfect storm. Yet, much of this couldhavebeen mitigated withbetterplanning andcoordination from trafficauthorities. Road users were left stranded in long queues, with emergencyvehicles struggling to navigate congested routes.Instancesofreckless overtaking, speeding, andlane-hoppingadded to the anxiety, putting everyone at risk.

Iwitnessedfirsthandthe sheer frustration of familiestrying to reach their destinations. Parents with young children, elderlypassengers, andeventhose on publictransportwereforcedtoendure long, stressful

delays. It wasparticularlyconcerning to seedrivers ignoringbasic road rules,asthoughtheir personal schedulesjustified putting others in danger

WhileIappreciatethe efforts of ourtrafficofficers androadsafetyteams, it is evident that more proactivemeasuresare needed. Bettertrafficflow management,clearer signage,and timelypublic announcements couldprevent such gridlockinthe future. Furthermore, public education campaigns on safe driving during peak holidayperiods arecrucial

Ialsourgelocal authorities to consider temporary measures formajor holidayweekends, such as designated lanesfor long-distance travelers, improved trafficlightcoordination, andactivemonitoring of accident hotspots. Thesesteps coulddramatically reduce congestion andprevent accidents.
