"Subcouncil approval of this project did not represent residents, and the process lacked transparency and meaningful consultation This is inconsistent with constitutional requirements for public participation," she highlighted under their key concerns

“The City would have considered a public participation process if there were alternative options, such as moving the embayment a meter or two from the proposed location In this instance, however, there is no alternative location, and as such, the public was not requested to comment but were informed of the implementation work," Quintas said

He was also asked why the decision was taken to build the embayment at this particular site

"The embayment was created in the road reserve (at the Mediclinic Panorama) to provide a safe and legal area for minibustaxis to drop off their passengers in the morning peak period Failing to provide this infrastructure will force the minibustaxis to stop in the road which will pose a serious safety risk to commuters, to the minibus-taxi drivers, and other road users, will increase congestion, will impede traffic flow, and may cause accidents

The proposed plan to establish a City Improvement District (CID) in Edgemead has been met with some criticism.

Last week a group called Stop Edgemead CID, who represents residents opposed to the proposal of a CID, expressed their concerns, claiming that crime in the area had been on a decline, that the area is thriving and that the plan will force households to pay millions for what they label as a “flawed and unnecessary scheme”

Kirsten Fernandes, spokesperson for the group, reached out to TygerBurger last week following a newspaper article about the plans to establish a CID in the area (“CID proposed for Edgemead”, 1/10)

In a statement issued by the group, Fernandes said they dispute the crime statistics shared by the Edgemead CID steering committee

Verified police comparative statistics for the area between 1 April 2023 and 31 March 2024, compared with 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025, show crime has dropped steeply, not risen, the statement reads Furthermore, they claim that the CID will cost households an additional R200 to R500, plus value added tax (VAT) each month in a year, escalating annually thereafter Fernandes said over 700 residents attended a meeting in August to make their opposition for the CID known “The Stop Edgemead CID Facebook group,

Runner donates funds raised to Ramot

An athlete from Cape Town who competed in the Comrades Marathon this year in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) to raise funds for charity was able to make his donation to a rehabilitation centre in Parow close to his heart last week

TygerBurger reported on the life-journey of Denver van der Bergh, a former drug addict, who took part in the Comrades Marathon earlier this year ("Cape runner conquers Comrades", 18/6)

His participation was not the only challenge though Prior to taking part in the running competition, he took on a different challenge - running from Cape Town in the Western Cape, through the Eastern Cape to the Comrades Marathon starting line at the Pietmaritzburg City Hall in KZN

The race was run on Sunday 8 June

Last week Van der Bergh visited the Ramot Treatment Centre for Substance Abuse in Frans Conradie Drive during their annual general meeting where he handed over a cheque for R51 410 to the centre, in order to help people who cannot

afford professional treatment for addiction

He shared his story after his visit to the centre on Wednesday 1 October

"I am a recovering addict After 25 years of alcohol and drug abuse, I have now been sober for five years In that time I have managed to turn my life around

I bought my first car at 45, went back to college and graduated cum laude in Business Administration, and I am now an intern at one of the top investment firms in South Africa

"I also had the chance to fix a broken relationship with my dad before he passed away in 2023," Van der Bergh explained

To raise awareness and funds, he ran a total distance of 1 861km over 36 days, finishing with the Comrades 90km Ultra Marathon, he said "My message throughout has been simple - there is always hope, and anything is possible " The money raised will go straight to Ramot, he said, to give others the same chance at recovery that he was given

"This is just the start I am setting up my own non-profit organisation to keep raising funds, supporting people in need," Van der Bergh said

The Colour for Cancer Walk 2025

took place on Sunday 5 October at Melkbosstrand, drawing families and participants in a vibrant, colourful show of support for DKMS Africa, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to fighting blood cancers and recruiting lifesaving stem cell donors

Participants walked 4km along the scenic route, with colour powder zones adding bursts of colour to the event and creating a festive atmosphere

Walkers had the option to wear white or their chosen colour to represent a cause close to their hearts, while the Shoes with a Message campaign allowed participants to write messages of hope inside donated shoes, which were later distributed to those in need

Minister targets traffic gridlock

With Cape Town now ranked as the 9th most congested city in the world on the 2024 INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard, the Western Cape’s new Mobility Month was launched on Wednesday with a bold call to action from provincial minister of mobility, Isaac Sileku, urging a fundamental shift in how we move people and goods across the province

With the average driver losing 94 hours a year stuck in traffic, the equivalent of two working weeks, its costing the local economy an estimated R3 billion annually

Kicking off the month-long initiative, Sileku convened a high-level panel of transport experts, academics and key industry players to unpack one of the Western Cape’s thorniest challenges – traffic congestion –and to map out a more connected, sustainable future

“Congestion is not just an inconvenience It hurts our economy, our environment, and most importantly, our people’s livelihoods,” Sileku said in his keynote address “We cannot build around congestion We must manage it, collectively and innovatively ”

The panel discussion held under the theme "Managing Mobility Together" included representatives from the Passenger Rail Agency of South

Raids expose corruption
