Bothasig CPF responds to latest crime stats
F
ollowing the release of the first quarter crime statistics for 2026-’27 on Friday last week, the Bothasig Community Policing Forum (CPF) says despite an encouraging overall decline in serious crime, increases in robbery, hijacking and commercial crime remain a concern for the community. The first quarter covers the period April to June and compares the period between 2022 to 2026. Mario Borchards, CPF chair, said compared between April and June this year and the same period in 2025, the statistics show that the 17 community reported serious crime categories decreased by 37 cases, from 286 to 249 — a 12,9% reduction.

Mervelec’s work is among those featured at the second Cape Town Photography Festival taking place from Wednesday 2 to Saturday 26 September. The festival will feature 40 exhibitions and more than 160 photographers at venues across the city. It explores the theme of “Truth” – an exploration of how truths are produced, challenged and resisted. “I’d like visitors to encounter an image that makes them stop, question something they thought they understood, or see their own world in a new way,” says de Mervelec, who settled in South Africa in the 1990s. The festival is also contributing to conversations around a national music photography archive, an initiative that grew from concerns about preserving South Africa’s photographic record of its musical heritage. STRONG IMPROVEMENT One of the strongest improvements was recorded in property-related crime, which fell by almost 40%. Cases dropped from 68 to 41, with residential burglaries declining by 13 cases and theft from motor vehicles falling by 12 cases, he said. The figures also show a significant reduction in several serious violent crimes. Attempted murder dropped from seven cases to one, while assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm declined from six cases to one. Sexual offences decreased from seven to three cases. No murders were recorded during either of the two comparison periods, he

INCREASES Robbery with aggravating circumstances increased from 12 to 19 cases. Common robbery also increased slightly, from nine to ten cases. Of particular concern is the increase in hijacking. Three hijackings were recorded during April to June this year, compared with none during the corresponding period in 2025. The statistics also recorded one truck hijacking this year. The increase in robbery-related crime highlights the importance of continued visible policing, hot-spot patrols, and cooperation between the police, the CPF, neighbourhood watches, private security, and residents, said Borchards. Commercial crime is another area requiring attention. Cases increased from 60 to 69, an increase of 15%. Residents and businesses are therefore urged to remain particularly vigilant against fraud, scams, and other financially motivated crimes. TO PAGE 4
