Die Bothasig-gemeenskapspolisiëringforum (GPF) het die inhegtenisneming van'n29-jarige man en beslaglegging op R10 miljoen se dwelms die afgelope week verwelkom. DieWes-Kaapse polisiese misdaadintelligensie-eenheid het Sondag 19 Julie by 'n woonstel in Sylviastraat in dieDeZicht-woonstelkompleks in Richwood toegeslaan, waar hulle optalle vuurwapens, dwelms en ammunisie beslag gelê het. Een verdagte is op die toneel in hegtenis geneem.
Die GPF het die polisie se misdaadintelligensie- en teenbendeeenheid geprysvir diewerk wat gedoen is en ook almal watbydie intelligensiegedrewe operasie betrokke was

"Die vonds van sewe onwettige vuurwapens, meer as 'n duisend patrone en dwelms met 'n straatwaarde van R10 miljoen, is 'n reuseprestasie.
"Hierdie soort operasies stel inwoners gerus dat intelligensie-gedrewe polisiëring vrugte afwerp. Hoewel een inhegtenisneming alleennie georganiseerde misdaaduitroeinie, demonstreerdit dat wetstoepassing misdadige netwerke ontwrigendat dit gevaarlike wapens uitons gemeenskappe verwyder," sê Mario Borchards, GPFvoorsitter.
Hy sê die gemeenskap se vertroue groei wanneer inwoners sigbare optrede, professionele ondersoeke en 'n suksesvolle uitkoms soos hierdieself gewaar.
"Bendeverwante misdaad strek veel verder as net na dié wat daarby betrokke is. Dit raak families, ondernemings, en die breë gemeenskap. Ondernemings ly
asgevolg vandiefstal, intimidasie,en toenemende sekuriteitskostes, terwyl inwoners in vrees en onsekerheid leef Onwettigevuurwapens en dwelms spoor geweld aanwat na enige buurt kan oorvloei."
Borchards sê hoewel Bothasig oor die algemeen as 'n veilige gemeenskap geag word, is dit nie geïsoleer van georganiseerde misdaad oor Kaapstad heen nie. "Hierdie inhegtenisneming dien as ‘n herinnering dat misdadige netwerkehulself enigeplek kan vestigas gemeenskappe te gemaklik raak."
Hy sê die sukses deur die polisie beklemtoon die belangrikheid van intelligensiegedrewe polisiëring, maar voeg by datlangtermynsukses 'n vennootskap tussen die polisie en die gemeenskap verg.
VEILIGHEID
Borchards sê daarvoor benodig hul gemeenskap:
. Intelligensiegedrewe ondersoeke;
. Hoësigbaarheid-polisiëring en geteikende optredes;
. Goeie samewerking tussen die polisie, die Stad Kaapstad, buurtwagte, private sekerheidsmaatskappye en die GPF;
. Inwoners wat verdagte aktiwiteite aanmeld;
. Belegging in misdaadvoorkomingstegnologie soos kringtelevisie-kameras in geïdentifiseerde brandpuntgebiede.

Cape Town’s skies willonce again burst into colour thisspring as the Cape Town International Kite Festival returns for its 32nd year, bringing together thousands of visitors to celebrate hope, resilience and mental health awareness.
The festival, hosted by Cape Mental Health, takes place on 24 and25October at Youngsfield Military BaseinOttery
Sincelaunching in 1994, it has grown into Africa’s oldest kite festival and one of South Africa’s leading mental health awareness events.
This year’s theme, #ColourTheSky, encourages communities to unite in supporting those living with mental health conditions while highlighting the importance of compassion, understanding and seeking help.
“We areexcited to host the 32nd Cape TownInternational Kite Festivalthis spring —atime of growth, renewal and colour,” said Prof Ingrid Daniels, CEO of Cape Mental Health.
“The kite festival provides us with an awesome opportunitytobrighten the sky withmessages of hope, stories ofresilience and to celebrate the courage and bravery of those who live with amentalhealth condition.”
Daniels added that the event also provides an opportunity to welcome international, national and localkite fliers while raising much-needed funds and awareness forCape Mental Health.
For one weekend, giant kites flown by local and international enthusiasts will transformthe skyline into acolourful display designed to inspirehope and encourageconversations around mental wellbeing.
According to Daniels, the #ColourTheSky themereflectsboth the visual spectacle of the festival and its deeper message.
“#ColourTheSky perfectly captures the visual spectacle and emotional energy of the event. Bright colours naturally trigger feelings of joy, optimism,hopeand positivity despitedifficult and challenging times. Colour overrides darknessand gives hope in the face of adversity,” she said.

Suevan der Linde, ward councillor, shared apicture of theburning bus and busstationonher social media page, urging motorists to avoid the area. Traffic was disrupted on Koeberg, Potsdam as well as Blaauwberg Road. Traffic on the nearby GieRoad was alsoaffected.
Smoke was seen billowing kilometres away, while fire engines responding to the incident approached down GieRoad.
The City’s urbanmobility directorate said in astatementthataninvestigation into the causeofthe fire is underway.
The bus has been destroyed and thereis extensive damage to the station that will remain closed until further notice, the directoratesaid.
No injuries were reported. Thefire was reportedshortly before 09:00.
Fire services assisted in putting out the fire, and that traffic was diverted while these efforts were ongoing.
PASSENGERSSAFELYEVACUATED
“I’ve been told that the bus driver heard an unusual sound when he arrived at the station. The next moment, he noticed smoke coming from the front of the bus Thankfully, all the passengers and the staff were safely evacuated before it got worse,” said Rob Quintas, Mayco member for urban mobility.
He said they werenotified that aprotest happened further down Potsdam Road afew minutes before the incident,and that thereisaninvestigation underway to determine the cause of the fire, and whether there are any links to the protest. Thematter has also been reported to the police, Quintas said.
“This incident will have amajor impact on the commuters who make use of the Killarney station,”said Quintas. Commuters have been urged to make use of the Potsdam station on the corner of Potsdam and Blaauwberg road in coming months while repairs are underway.
The City of Cape Town has warned motorists not to fall for ascam in which fraudsters send SMS messages claiming road users haveunpaid parking fees and mustclickona link to settle the balance.

Motorists are advised not to confuse thesefraudulent messageswithlegitimate notifications about outstanding traffic fines.The City does send reminders to motorists with outstanding fines registered in their names, whichcontain alink to

The milestones of the 25th anniversary of the non-profit organisation
HearUs andthe 40th anniversaryofthe firstcochlear implantation performed in South Africa are being celebrated with aconcert by the HeydeburgSymphony Orchestra in September in Stellenbosch.
Tickets for this celebratory concert by HearUs, in association withthe Heydeburg Symphony Orchestra andDare4Life, are available on Quicket from Saturday 1August.
All funds raised will be in aid of HearUs, which was established by Daneel and Santievan der Walt and Fanie de Villiers as an initiative aligned withthe TygerbergHospital–Stellenbosch University Cochlear Implant Unit, and Dare4Life.
HearUs provides financial support to individuals with significant hearing loss from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, enabling them to obtain and maintain cochlear implants and realise their full potentialinthe world of hearing. Dare4Life is aholistic well-being movement supporting individuals facing illness and major life transitions.

On 29September 2023, Tygerberg Hospital celebrated its1000th cochlearimplant recipient,and to date more than 1020 patients have received cochlearimplantsthrough this programme. September is also officially recognised as the International Month for Deaf People in commemoration of the first world congress of the World Federation of the Deaf, held inSeptember 1951.

Balancing aPhD in pharmaceutical sciences withcompetitive chess is no smallfeat, but try doing so and winning adivision in anational chess championship.
University of the WesternCape (UWC) PhDstudent, 25-year-old Harrison Abrahams from Parow, succeeded in achieving exactly that.Harrison captured theSouth African Open Chess Championships IntermediateSection, hosted from 27 June to 5July2026, scoring an impressive eight points from nine rounds.
The Intermediate Section wasfiercely contested, with thetop five finishers separated by razor-thin margins Abrahamssecured first place outright, while his four competitors, Kopa Lesetedi, Andile Siyali, Christian Maxwell, and Karl Freeks, rounded out the second through fifth spots after atense tiebreak.
For Abrahams, the victory is atestament to his ability to balancetwo demanding worlds. While he is knownasaformidable chessplayer who competes regularly, he is also deep into his PhD studies in pharmaceutical sciences, focusing on nanomedicine and tuberculosis treatment. Reflecting on his tournament success, Abrahams described his mindset as calm yet focused.
“I had astrategy, but Ialsoreminded myself to enjoy the game. That balance made all the difference. My mindset was simply to play good chess and ensureI was well-rested and focused. Idid nottry goingfor tricks and played solidly and Ihonestly did not expect to win. Ikept that fantasy of winning out ofmymind completely, and focused on one game ata time. “I started my chess journey when Iwas aboutseven years old. My uncle played againstmeand beat me.Hetaughtme the basics andIremember losing almost every gameatfirst, but Iwas hooked. That inspired me to improve my chess skills until Icould beat him,” he joked. “Later, Iplayed casually in primary andhigh school,and I, strangely enough, stopped playing chess during the pandemic and restarteditwhenI returned to UWC for mymaster’sdegree in 2024, this time taking it very seriously.”

aUniversity of theWestern Cape (UWC) study has foundthatmanySouth Africans decide what to put on their dinner table basedonaffordability, household needsand what is available rather than nutritional value.
The study examined food choices in Worcesterinthe WesternCape, Stutterheim in the Eastern Cape and EsikhawiniinKwaZulu-Natal.
HEALTHMATTERS,BUTOFTENCOMESSECOND
The study, published in the South African Journal of Clinical Nutrition, involvedalmost 70 adults. Many participants were unemployed or depended on social grants.
Researchers,including UWC dietetics and nutrition lecturer Dr Nazeeia Sayedand department head Prof Rina Swart, found that participants generally understood the benefitsofhealthy eating. However,health wasseldom thedeciding factor when food was bought.
Peopleweighed health considerations againstprice, convenience, transport costs and thedistancetoshops.
One participantdescribed the realityof householdbudgeting: “Inour household we do not just buy food. Rather, we check thepriceofeach food itemfirst to see how much it costs.”
Household members alsoplayed amajor role in food decisions. Participants often chosemealsthatwould satisfy children, partnersand otherrelatives, while ensuringeveryonehad enough to eat.
Healthyalternativeswere sometimes overlooked if they were considered too expensive,unfamiliar or unlikely to appeal to the whole family.
Participantsidentified whole grains, fruit,vegetables, legumes, lean protein and minimally processed foodsashealthy. Friedfoods,sugary drinks, fast food, refinedcarbohydrates andproductshigh in fat andsalt were generally viewed as unhealthy.
Some healthyoptions, including leafy vegetables, legumes andchicken liver, were avoidedbecause people were unsure how to prepare them in an appealing way.
Promotions andadvertising also affected purchasing decisions. Price-conscious consumers said they relied on specials and comparedprices weekly or monthly, dependingontheir income.
“We watchthe specials, we live on specials,”one participant said. “We compareitmonthly or weekly, depending on what our income is.”
Cookingathome was viewed as cheaper than buyingready-made meals. Shops closetohome or work were also preferred because they reduced transport expenses.
Snacksand treats,including yoghurt, were often regardedasluxuries.
Participants said they would rather spend money on essentials such as flour. Products with alonger shelf life werealso more attractive than foods that spoiled quickly.
Local spaza shops were valued for their proximity and convenience. Some also allowed customers to buy on credit.
However, participants raised concerns about the freshness and expiry dates of some products sold at thesestores
Theresearchers cautioned that the findings may not apply to all South African communities, but noted the study offered important insight intohow people in urban areas made food choices under financial pressure. They recommended closer cooperation among government, retailers, the food industry and other stakeholders to improve access to healthier food. Healthier products should be promoted more actively, while marketing of unhealthy options should be reduced. They added that retail changes should formpart of wider public-health efforts to create a healthier food environment.

“Higher borrowingcosts tend to keepsome would-be buyers renting for longer, andthat supports demand,” she says.
“We’veseenrentalsstayresilient, particularly in well-connected areas where people want to live and work.”
That resiliencecomeswith a caveat.Affordabilityisunder pressure for tenants too, and Savage says careful vetting matters more than ever.
“Demand is healthy, but so is theneed for diligence,”she notes. “Thorough screening protects both thelandlord andthe tenant, and it’s thesingle best wayto avoid problems down the line.”
LOOKINGAHEAD
With July settled, attention turnstowhether the bank can begin easingagain before the year is out —a question that rests largely on fueland global conditions. Mott’s view is that the nextdecisionshouldn’tdominate anyone’s thinking.
“A single rate decision is rarely thethingthatmakes or breaks a property move,” he says. “What matters is buyingwithin your means,inthe right place, for the right reasons.Get thoseright and you can weather whatever the bankdecides —this month or any other.”

The new short-termletting by-law proposed by the City of Cape Town will affect many property investors who have acquiredhomes and apartments specifically to let them out via Airbnb and other booking platforms —but they should think twice before deciding to sell theseproperties.
That’s the wordfrom Adel and Charl Louw, principals of the Chas Everitt Atlantic Seaboard and City Bowl office, who note that from 1July next year, owners of any property that is let on ashort-termbasis for more than 50% of the total annual room nights available can expect to paycommercial rather than residential property rates.
However, rather than making ahasty decision to sell these properties,they say, investors should know that thereisa compelling opportunity now to pivottowards long-term rentals, whichisasector currently experiencing significant undersupply in Cape Town.
“Thereisachronic shortage of long-term rental stock across themetro, particularly in central areas and along the Atlantic Seaboard,” they note. “Demand is exceptionally strong, vacancy rates are extremely low, and wellpriced,well-located properties are being let very quickly.”
The latest statistics show that while rentals in the Western Cape grew by almost 7% in 2025 to average between R11000 and R12 000 per month, thosein central Cape Town range from R13 000 to R15000 per month for one-bedroom units and start at around R19000 for twobedroom apartments, with prime properties in sought-afterareas often achieving significantly higherfigures.
“In addition, vacancy rates aregenerally well below 2%, underscoring the strengthof tenant demand, and rental properties in Cape Town also have good capital growth potential. Property values in the city rose by an average of 9% in 2025, and rental supply continues to lagdemand despite ongoing new development.”

Thenew by-law has been proposed as part of the city’s move to enforce existing policy more consistently and ensure fairness across the accommodation sector, where hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs already pay commercial rates. Under the proposed framework, properties will be classified as commercial if they are not primary residences and are used wholly for short-term letting, or if they are available for short-term letting for more than 50% of their total annual room nights. And while the city has emphasised that it continues to support tourism and does not intend to restrict shorttermletting, the Louws believe the policy shift will naturally rebalance portions of the market.
“Short-term letting will remain aviable and important part of Cape Town’stourism economy, but for many investors, especially thoseoperating at scale, the numbers may increasingly favour long-term rentals, and given the current supply-demand dynamics, that will be avery attractive position to be in.”
