Walkraisesawareness

The Bothasig community showed their support last week in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF)

Annually in November South Africa joins the rest of the world in support of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign which runs from 25 November to 10 December

This week residents in Bothasig joined the local Community Policing Forum (CPF) on their regular social walk on Monday 17 November They took a stand against GBV wearing purple to mark the

occasion and holding signs encouraging the public to break the silence against this scourge

“Her voice matters, her life matters,” one of those signs read

Mario Borchards, CPF chair, says the purpose of the social walk was to raise awareness about GBVF within the Bothasig Precinct

"This community initiative brings residents together in a visible show of solidarity, emphasising that GBVF is not only a private issue but a community concern that requires collective action By walking side by side through our neighbourhoods, participants help break the silence surrounding abuse, encourage

open dialogue, and highlight the importance of early reporting and support for victims

"The social walk also aims to strengthen partnerships between residents, neighbourhood watches, local organisations, and policing structures Through this united presence, the initiative seeks to promote safety, reinforce prevention efforts, and empower community members to stand firm against

all forms of violence," says Borchards Ultimately, the GBVF awareness social walk serves as a reminder that a safer, more compassionate Bothasig begins with awareness, involvement, and a community that refuses to look away, he adds The CPF thanked everyone who showed up with purpose, compassion, and determination on its social media page, saying every voice matters, and every step counts

"Today’s social walk was more than just steps taken, it was a united stand to highlight gender-based violence and femicide Our community came together in solidarity to raise awareness and say no to violence in all its forms," the CPF wrote

NFOwarnsBlack Fridayshoppers

As South Africans gear up for Black Friday on 28 November, the National Financial Ombud (NFO) urges consumers to think twice before swiping their way into a financial hangover

While seasonal discounts may offer shortterm appeal, the long-term consequences of overspending on credit, including highinterest debt and depleted savings, can undermine essential financial goals and lead to post-holiday hardship

The NFO has also cautioned that digital fraud tends to spike during the year-end holiday season

Nerosha Maseti, credit and banking division lead ombud at the NFO, said Black Friday, known for massive sales and long lines, is a shopper's adrenaline rush with jaw-dropping discounts, limitedtime offers, and the thrill of snagging the perfect deal

"But beneath the buzz lies a financial minefield Swipe-happy spending can spiral into credit card chaos, and lurking digital scams are ready to pounce when vigilance slips To truly win the day, smart shoppers arm themselves with a plan, stay sharp online, and keep their budgets on lockdown After all, the best deal is one that doesn't cost your peace of mind," said Maseti

IMPULSIVESPENDING

Many South Africans use credit to fund Black Friday purchases, but impulsive spending can lead to unmanageable debt

Maseti said the risks of such expenditure include high-interest credit card balances or short-term loans; depletion of savings intended for essential goals like home ownership, education, or emergencies; and financial strain after the holiday season, when unexpected credit card or loan repayments come due, leaving consumers with limited funds for essential living expenses

Maseti advised consumers to set a spending budget and stick to it; prioritise long-term financial goals over seasonal bargains; and keep credit balances low to maintain financial health

CREDITCARDFRAUD

The NFO also sounded the alarm on a surge in credit card scams Fraudsters tend to zero in on Black Friday shoppers using non-bank and store-branded credit cards, especially those tied to big-name retailers

"These criminals contact cardholders by phone, impersonating representatives from these companies, and deceive unsuspecting consumers into revealing their confidential One-Time Pins (OTPs) to make unauthorised purchases at large merchants, leaving victims responsible for fraudulent charges While this scam has been known in traditional banking circles for many years, its rising prevalence in the non-bank credit card market is deeply concerning The NFO is particularly worried that such fraud will escalate over Black Friday with high transaction volumes and increased consumer activity

"It is crucial for cardholders to remember that no legitimate company will ever ask them to share confidential information such as card numbers, passwords, or OTPs," Maseti said

DISCOUNTEDAIRLINETICKETS

Fraudsters also continue to target bank customers in new ways A recent case investigated by the NFO revealed a new trend, with the consumer losing R120 000 after responding to a social media advert offering discounted airline tickets

After submitting her phone number and email via a link, she was contacted through WhatsApp and instructed to download an app from the Google Play Store to access promo codes Though the link appeared secure, the app was fraudulent and embedded with malware Soon after installation, the consumer's

SOUTH AFRICANS WARNED OF CREDIT TRAPS AND SCAMS

phone began overheating and behaving erratically The unexpected activation of the camera's green light raised immediate concerns Upon checking her banking app, the consumer discovered two unauthorised transactions and swiftly reported the incident to both her bank and the police Despite her prompt action within just 27 minutes after the transactions, the bank denied liability, citing that the payments had been authorised via selfieauthentication on her trusted device

The consumer escalated the matter to the National Financial Ombud (NFO), seeking a full refund

Following investigation, the NFO found that the funds had already been utilised before the fraud was reported, leaving no opportunity for recovery Also, the bank provided evidence that biometric authentication was used to approve the transactions

Based on the specific facts of the complaint, it was evident that the compromise originated from the consumer's interaction with a fraudulent third-party app, which contained malware capable of remote access and biometric simulation

Maseti said no proof was provided that the transactions took place as a result of maladministration or safety and security failures on the part of the bank

"By downloading the fraudulent app, the consumer essentially handed over her phone, including all the information stored on her phone, to the criminals, and this resulted in the fraud," she said

As the festive season approaches, the public are once again reminded to be vigilant and take extra precautions to ensure that their homes, businesses and loved ones stay safe during the holidays

The Goodwood Community Policing Forum (CPF) shared some tips to help make sure people are informed

This time of the year often brings increased movement, shopping activity, and travel and with it, a rise in opportunistic crime, the organisation said The CPF is calling on all to play their part in safeguarding themselves and their neighbours

"The CPF would like everyone to enjoy a safe and peaceful holiday season Simple safety measures, from checking alarms to staying alert while shopping, can make a big difference," said Abdallah Sydney, chair

BUSINESSES

For businesses there are also ways to remain safe Local business owners are urged to follow these steps:

Fire warning as summer arrives

RICHARDROBERTS

RICHARD ROBERTS@NOVUSMEDIA CO ZA

To end the year off and to wish residents well for the festive season, Subcouncil 7 chair Gerhard Fourie last week plead with the public to also be mindful that we are entering the fire season and fire safety should be a priority Fourie, while delivering his chairman’s report on Wednesday 19 November at the sub-council chambers at the Durbanville Municipal Building, made the request The meeting was the last sub-council meeting for this year

MULTIPLEVEGETATIONFIRES

Vegetation fires are more prevalent in Cape town’s hot, dry and windy summer conditions, Fourie said

“Over the past few years there has been an upward trend In 2024-’25 there has been 7 480 vegetation fires which is an increase of 40% from between October 2021 and January 2022 This places a lot of pressure on the fire services who also respond to structural fires and a range of other emergencies, such as motor vehicle accidents to hazmat incidents and even water rescues

“And, the same weather conditions that promote the spread of wildfires also increase the risk of fires in our informal settlements,” Fourie said

Last week Ward 5 councillor Miquette Temlett requested that another round of public participation be conducted regarding the zoning of Tulbagh Park in Richwood as a dedicated dog park The City of Cape Town’s Public Participation Unit (PPU) conducted a survey in the immediate vicinity of the park recently. The park is already used as a dog park, and the public participation process is only to make it official

COUNCILLOR CALLS FOR MORE PUBLIC PARTICIPATION

Wednesday last week (19 November)

Temlett said she had received the public participation’s report but that it be done again

The public participation was supposed to happen over three days, but was only done on one, according to some of the residents, she said

Temlett said that some residents’ comments are not included and therefore

want the public participation conducted again to ensure they got everyone’s feedback

André Louw, a representative of the PPU, said in response that the two extra days were only optional days, and that they had made available 34 to 35 hours to have the survey done He added, however, that by the Friday they had already gained 76 responses four against, and 72 in favour of the park being officially a dog park

“We think we have completed the process, we had double what we had expected,” he said

Temlett said she would like an email link to be made available, should residents still wish to comment

“Some feel that they did not get the opportunity to do so,” she added

Gerhard Fourie, sub-council chair, said that when they conduct a public participation process, they need to ensure that they do it properly and that no one is excluded He said the public participation is what sub-council is all about

“We need to make sure that the public is informed,” he added

The matter remains on the agenda under Matters Receiving Attention

With just five more weeks to go before Christmas, there is still some time to shop for gifts to spoil your loved ones To that end, the Friends of the Edgemead Library are currently running a craft market until the end of the month at the library where several uniquely made items are on sale.

Lynne Anderson, treasurer, says the market is held twice a year, in June and November The market is open to any craftsman or woman who would like to exhibit their items

An advert is placed on Facebook, and application forms are available at the library for crafters to apply for a table, says Anderson “We accept hand-made crafts and many of our crafters have been part of the market for many years We also have a regular donated-book sale every last Saturday of the month,” she says “All funds raised are used to buy new books for the library for our patrons to enjoy and we have the enviable reputation for being the leading library for new available bestsellers”, she says Anderson told TygerBurger that the market is usually well supported by the local community and that it has been running for several years now She says they also have a good standing relationship with the organisers of the annual Edgemead Christmas Market held at the community hall during December

Furthermore, she said the items on sale during June are predominantly for the winter season, while the one held in November is more focused on summer She says the exhibitors vary as a result, but that they receive a significant amount

Animmersive ‘Nyte’atDieBoer

South African-born and US-based performer Ashton Nyte is coming to Die Boer theatre in Durbanville on Tuesday 2 December at 20:30.

Nyte a composer, singer, multi-instrumentalist, author, and performer is a storyteller in every sense His work drifts between the cinematic and the soul-baring.

Known to many as the frontman of the alt-rock project The Awakening, Nyte’s solo work offers something more intimate: a raw poetic unravelling of hope, memory, and quiet rebellion.

Described as “Johannesburg’s Bowie”, Nyte’s sound blends elements of dark folk, post-punk and art rock with an honesty that disarms.

His live performances are immersive and theatrical, rich with texture and emotional weight equal parts lullaby and lament

With a catalogue spanning over 350 original songs, eight solo albums, and collaborations with members of The Cure, Peter Murphy, and The Mission, Nyte continues to shape a world uniquely his own. His songs have echoed through TV screens, lecture halls, film scores, and festival stages but it's in the quiet connection between artist and audience that his magic truly lives.

His debut Afrikaans album, Moederland, was voted one of the top 10 Afrikaans albums of 2014 by Netwerk24 and spawned four number-one radio hits in South Africa, including "Kan Ons Weer Begin", "Geheime en Momente", "Die Laaste Dans" and "Lukas", a beautiful duet with Karin Hougaard.

His latest album and book, Autumn’s Children, was named one of American Songwriter’s Top Albums of 2023. . Tickets are R250 Book at www dieboer com or on 021 979 1911.

ASHTON NYTE TAKES DIE BOER STAGE

Bekroonde teaterstuk deur Dana Snyman

by Die Boer

Dié rou, selfonthullende memoir vra: hoe word 'n seun 'n man? 'n Seun wat nie 'n meisie se aandag kan trek nie? 'n Seun wat nie goed genoeg is vir die weermag nie?

Dit is ‘n aangrypende relaas oor grootword tydens die doodsnikke van 'n politieke stelsel oor manlikheid en oor eer, en oor die liefde wat uiteindelik alles oorkom.

I am trying to be gentler with myself...

We all want to belong From the moment we take our first steps into school, society teaches us that our worth is tied to achievement, to being someone, doing something, building something We grow in years, in experience, in titles Somewhere along the way that hunger for belonging becomes tangled with the need to feel enough through what we do or produce

I have come to realise that I'm married to work Not in the romantic sense, but in the way it occupies my thoughts, dictates my moods and defines my sense of worth For many of us this relationship starts innocently We pour ourselves into our studies, our first jobs and the careers that follow We tell ourselves it is ambition, that this is what success looks like Then life shifts From my observation the children one raises grow into their own people The career ladder one has climbed so relentlessly begins to feel less like an ascent and more like a treadmill One morning one wakes up and wonders who one is outside of one's job title, outside the roles one has played so diligently for years

I see it all around me Friends who feel lost when they are not working Parents who struggle to rest because they do not know who they are beyond their families

Colleagues who measure their worth by their productivity And I see it in myself too I often say I am married to my work, half as a joke, half as a confession Work gives me purpose and stability It keeps me focused But it also keeps me busy enough not to think too much about the deeper, messier parts of life

That is the danger, I think , when we start confusing doing with being When our sense of worth is tied to what we do rather than who we are

My generation was raised in a world that celebrates hustle and glorifies busyness We were told to dream big, work harder and never settle I do not want to wake up one day and realise that I built my life entirely around my work, that I poured so much into becoming someone that I forgot simply how to be Work, like parenthood, can be a beautiful calling It gives purpose, structure and sometimes even meaning But it can also become a hiding place , a convenient distraction from the quieter work of being human There is safety in emails, meetings and deadlines There is clarity in schedules and targets The messiness of inner life, loneliness, grief, uncertainty, can always wait for later

Except "later" always comes It comes when the office lights dim and the house is quiet It comes when promotions lose their thrill, when children leave home or when one's body reminds one it has limits even when one's will does not It comes when one finally has time and the silence asks "Who are you now?"

I do not have the balance figured out yet, far from it But I am beginning to understand I cannot keep defining myself by what I do So I am trying Trying to be gentler with myself Trying to measure my days not by how much I achieve, but by how present I am Because when the noise fades and the accolades mean less what will matter most is whether I still recognise myself Whether I can belong to me, not to my work, not to anyone else, but to the quiet truth of who I am becoming -NAMHLAMONAKALI

Coastal bird flu threat puts pets at risk

I walk my dog along the beach most nights and am increasingly worried about the ongoing bird flu affecting seabirds on our coastline

The virus has led to several bird deaths recently and I fear the risk of encountering an infected bird during my walks This is not only heartbreaking for our wildlife but also poses a potential danger to pets and their owners I urge fellow dog walkers and pet owners to stay vigilant, avoid contact with any sick or dead birds, and report sightings to local authorities Protecting our pets and preserving our coastal ecosystem must be a community priority WORRIED, Melkbosstrand

to manhood, a call for community understanding

When the summer season draws to a close, many communities across South Africa will welcome back young men who have undergone Ulwaluko the traditional Xhosa initiation rite This sacred custom, also practised in various forms by other African communities, marks a boy’s transition to manhood With initiates returning to schools and workplaces in the new year, fostering informed understanding and tolerance within our diverse neighbourhoods is paramount Ulwaluko is a profound cultural and spiritual journey where boys are secluded in the mountains or designated initiation schools Under the guidance of elders, they are taught the core responsibilities, values,

and secrets of manhood within their culture These lessons emphasise respect, discipline, and the weight of future roles as husbands fathers and community leaders The process is a deeply respected cornerstone of identity for millions The culmination of this journey is the homecoming, a vibrant and celebratory event

These celebrations are not private affairs; they are community-wide, often spilling into streets with singing, dancing, and the distinctive red clay on the faces of amakrwala (new men) This is where the wider community’s role becomes crucial Neighbours from all racial and cultural backgrounds may witness or be invited to these open celebrations Understanding the context transforms these events

from mere noise to a meaningful welcome The visible signs, the new clothes, the subdued demeanour of the initiates the jubilant families are not just spectacle but symbols of a significant personal and cultural achievement

By seeking to understand Ulwaluko, diverse communities do more than just tolerate; they actively participate in a supportive social fabric This awareness fosters empathy, dispels curiosity born of ignorance, and allows everyone to share in the joy of a family and a culture As these young men return, empowered and transformed, a welcoming and informed community is the final, essential step in honouring their journey FEZEKILE COTANI, Soneike, Kuils River

Cape Town-based environmental

group

Save a Fishie has announced the expansion of its flagship Coast 2 Coast campaign for 2026

What began in 2023 as a single journey along South Africa’s coastline to clear plastic pollution and inspire local communities will now be split into six focused clean-ups throughout the year making it easier for Cape Town residents and coastal communities nationwide to get involved

“Over the past three years, youth-led action has proven its power right here at home,” said Save a Fishie’s Zoë Prinsloo

“Our record 7,7 tonnes collected in 2025 shows how much South Africans care about our beaches and splitting Coast 2 Coast into six trips lets us make an even bigger impact in our neighbourhoods ”

RECORDYEARFORCAPETOWN ANDCOASTALCOMMUNITIES

In 2025, Save a Fishie mobilised volunteers from Cape Town’s beaches to other key coastal spots across the country, removing 7,7 tonnes of waste including plastics, fishing gear, lollipop sticks, bottle tops, and other harmful litter The campaign also expanded its education efforts, reaching thousands of local learners and families, sparking a growing culture of care for our environment

SIXSHORTERJOURNEYS

Breaking the campaign into six shorter journeys means:

. Timing clean-ups with tides and seasonal weather in our region

. Making it easier for schools, families, and community groups in Cape Town and beyond to participate

. Reaching more neighbourhoods during

key community engagement periods

. Improving tracking of litter hotspots along our shores

. Offering more environmental talks and activities at local schools and events

“This isn’t just a clean-up it’s a community movement,” says Prinsloo

“By focusing on local areas throughout the year, we can work closer with our neighbours, adapt to changing conditions, and inspire even more people to protect our oceans ”

GETINVOLVEDANDSUPPORTLOCALSHORES

Save a Fishie invites everyone from Cape Town’s coastal communities to join the Coast 2 Coast 2026 campaign whether volunteering, partnering, or spreading the word “Together, we can keep our beaches and waterways clean and thriving for generations to come ”
