This October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the provincial department of health and wellness is encouraging women to have regular check-ups

According to the department, about 1 500 new breast cancer cases are diagnosed annually in the Western Cape, with primary health care being a critical first step

It says the prevalence of breast cancer is increasing in South Africa, and globally Furthermore, women are diagnosed with more advanced breast cancer and have lower survival rates Therefore, women need to be diligent about their breast health, and seek help early, the department said in a statement issued on Monday

Clinics play a crucial role in assessing and identifying warning signs and facilitating prompt referrals to sites for definitive diagnoses and further management

Teams of professionals, including nurses, clerks, physiotherapists, genetic services, dietitians, radiographers, doctors, psychologists, social workers, and support staff, alongside community partners such as Reach for Recovery, Project Flamingo, and Pink Lady Apples at Tygerberg Hospital, lead the fight against breast cancer and assist patients th h t th i b t j

Laugh, dance, and sing along with Opera UCT’s ‘Die Fledermaus’

Opera and fun don’t always get invited to the same party People imagine serious faces, gold curtains and arias that last longer than a Cape Town cold front

But Opera UCT’s Die Fledermaus is the opposite: it’s fizzy, flirty and gloriously extra the kind of night out where you dress up, laugh out loud, and nudge the person next to you because yes, that just happened.

This production is bang-up to date: the famous Act II party has been moved to a Cape-based jazz nightclub all shadows, delicious music and latenight swagger

The costumes are street-to-salon chic (masks welcome), the pace is brisk, and the vibe is “friends’ night out ” not “whisper and behave”

Worried about language? Don’t be The music is sung in German, the dialogue is in English, and surtitles keep everyone in the loop (including multilingual moments so no one gets left behind)

If you can follow a meme, you can follow this plot: mistaken identities, cheeky pranks, stolen kisses, and champagne-fuelled chaos.

That old myth that opera is for older, wealthy,

mostly privileged crowds? Not this one

The cast is young the staging is proudly Cape Town, and the energy is for everyone date-night people, fashion people, music people, first-timers, and yes, families (under 18s are free just book on Webtickets to reserve seats).

Think of Die Fledermaus as your favourite night out with better melodies

It’s the same delicious mischief from rom-coms and club stories, just sung by voices that can lift the roof and a band that can swing.

Come as you are or come extra. Either way, you’ll leave smiling and maybe humming.

Opera UCT’s Die Fledermaus runs at the Baxter Theatre from Thursday 23 to Sunday 26 October .Tickets range from R100 to R500 (u-18 free but need to book). Book at Webtickets

and its people, and it would be the honour of a lifetime to serve our country wholeheartedly ”

Bunny crisis in Durbanville

Durbanville has sadly become a known dumping ground for domestic rabbits

In recent weeks, more than 24 abandoned bunnies have had to be rescued sterilised and cared for to prevent further breeding

Why this matters:

.Pet rabbits are domesticated animals, not wild They cannot survive on their own

.Many are run over by cars in neighbourhood streets

. They are easy prey and are attacked or eaten by dogs, cats birds – and even people

.Without care they get sick and die from untreated illnesses

.They suffer in extreme heat or cold, without proper water food and shelter

.Some people view them as pests, leading to them being poisoned or even shot

Dumping a rabbit is not only cruel it creates an end-

less cycle of suffering breeding and more abandoned animals

What you can do instead:

.Adopt don’t shop – and always sterilise your pets

.If you can no longer care for your bunny please contact a rabbit rescue or animal shelter as a last resort

.Rehome responsibly: post on South African bunny groups and rescue networks like Bunny Huggers SA and Bunnies South Africa

Abandoning your pet is not only cruel, it is illegal under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962

Let’s protect our bunnies and stop the cycle of dumping in Durbanville

Alle

Members of the Odysseus Motorcycle Club recently combined their love of riding with their passion for helping animals, raising a total of R13 000 for Fallen Angels Pet Rescue near Melkbosstrand “We believe in riding for a cause, and helping animals gives our rides real purpose,” said the club members On 12 October, a bright, sunny morning set the scene as the bikers gathered at N1 City before heading out to the rescue with donations in tow

BACKGROUND

Founded by Gayl Basson, Shireen Williams, and the late Lilian Williams, Fallen Angels has provided a safe and loving refuge for countless animals, extending its compassionate reach beyond Melkbosstrand

THE DONATION ALSO COVERED VET FEES

to areas like Table View and Milnerton TygerBurger reported last year (“Fallen Angels Pet Rescue in Melkbosstrand forced to vacate site”, 14 November 2024) the future of this vital sanctuary is now at risk

On 1 November 2024, after investing over two and a half years and nearly R250 000 in compliance efforts, the organisation received word from the City of Cape Town that their application for a Special Consent Use Permit had been denied The property’s proximity to the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, within a regulated 5km zone, makes the rescue centre ineligible for its intended use

The City’s decision has left Fallen Angels Pet Rescue with no option but to vacate its current location

Through all the uncertainty and

waiting for news on their appeal, Fallen Angels has new shelter plans underway on a smaller property in Langebaanweg on the West Coast

Earlier in the month, the club handed over R7 500 directly to the rescue’s vet account at West Beach Animal Hospital This was followed by an additional R3 850 worth of pet food, blankets, chemicals, and supplies, plus R1 000 in cash donations A generous anonymous donor also contributed a collection of animal toys

WARMWELCOME

Upon arrival, the group was warmly welcomed by Karen Stramrood, the farm manager, whose dedication and heartfelt appreciation set the tone for a meaningful visit Members toured

the rescue grounds, accompanied by wagging tails and playful paws a reminder of why their support matters

Special thanks went to Robert Todd, who coordinated shopping, transport, and negotiated discounts from local businesses

Brackenfell Pets offered 5% off pet supplies, and HANCO

Packaging contributed additional discounted goods, stretching every rand further

The day was filled with moments of joy and connection, including Dick de Kroon adopting a dog, giving one lucky animal a forever home

Fallen Angels expressed their gratitude: “A massive thank you goes out to Odysseus Motorcycle Club for their awesome donation towards our vet account and for coming to the farm to walk some of our furbabies Thank you so much ”

HERMANJANSEN

Newly elected Western Province Bowls (WPB) president, Tony Harland, recently “rolled out” his executive’s battle plan to combat challenges facing the sport Harland’s speech kicked off the traditional celebratory official opening of the WPB 2025-26 season in the Durbanville clubhouse on Sunday 12 October the first since the Covid-19 pandemic Key among these issues are dwindling membership numbers and financial pressures

Harland is a former president of Durbanville Bowling Club (DBC), the biggest club in the Western Province and arguably the most successful, financially and with achievements, on the greens He took over from Bellville’s Gerrit

van Milligen, who had a four year stint

Harland’s two year appointment in August is an historic one: As far as can be established he is the first member of DBC (established in 1948) to be elected as Western Province president

The opening day is traditionally hosted by the home club of the incoming WPB president

OFFICIALOPENINGSEASON

Harland said: “I am excited about today It brings back part of an old tradition of the official season opening which fell away during Covid-19 ”

Delegates from 22 of the 32 WPB clubs (three not active) attended the ceremony

“We have received apologies from many clubs, who had other commitments It is impossible to

accommodate everybody ”

Addressing financial challenges, Harland said the WPB executive have started with an overall review and redrawing of the budget

“I attended the Bowling South Africa (BSA) AGM the week after our AGM The overall financial position was the main area of discussion Concern was raised over the depletion of reserves and immediate cost-cutting action has been taken "

He said WPB was in the same predicament with dwindling reserves the last three years

“This trend cannot continue, hence the review of finances This exercise will be completed by the end of November,” he said

RELATIONSHIPS

Harland then addressed the sometimes tetchy issue of

interrelations within WPB

“The harder part of the goals set is that of relationships As an executive we need to ensure that everybody was on board to bring success both on and off the bowling green

“Many gaps were identified across the full spectrum of the bowling chain from executive level to standing committees to clubs and bowlers ”

Harland said membership numbers had been flat the last three years

“The issue with most clubs is not attracting new members but rather retaining members

"Are we getting close enough to our new members to make them feel part of the club?

“The perception of an ‘us and them’ must also be done away with ”
