DieWes-Kaapse polisie sê in ’n mediaverklaringdaar is op sewe vuurwapens, ammunisie en dwelms ter waarde van R10 miljoen beslag gelê. Dieman salindie Goodwoodlanddroshof verskyn sodra hy aangekla is, sê kapt. Frederickvan Wyk, provinsiale polisiewoordvoerder. Volgens die polisie het lede verbonde aan die polisie se eenheid vir misdaadintelligensie op Sondag 19 Julie om 21:19 die man by ’n woning in Sylviastraat in die De Zicht-landgoed in Richwood in hegtenis geneem. Dit volg nadat hulle inligting ontvang het dat een van die woonstelle hier glo deur ’n plaaslikegroep bende as ’n bergplek gebruik word. Diepolisie was besig om die woonstel fyn dop te hou, toehulle die verdagte in ’n luukse voertuig opgemerk het. Metsyvertrek vanaf die woonstelle het polisielede homvoorgekeer. Provinceopensnewlinendepot

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness has officially opened anew R11,4 million Provincial Linen Depot at the Tygerberg Hospital Estate, bolstering the systems that ensure healthcareservicescan continue uninterrupted acrossthe province.

The 300m² facility will supply top-up linen to all 554 provincial health-care facilities and service points,including hospitals, clinics, community-health centres, mobile clinics, satellite clinics, forensic-pathology services and emergency medical services throughout the province, the department said.

BEHINDTHESCENESOFPATIENTCARE

It said while linen services largely operate out of public view, cleanlinen is fundamental to infection prevention, patient dignity and the day-to-day functioning of health facilities. The new depot will serveasabuffer stock facility, providing urgent replacement and top-up linen to health-care servicesacrossthe province.

Mireille Wenger, MEC for Health and Wellness, said investment in operational systems is essential to building aresilient health service.

“The strongest health systems are not measured only by what happens ata patient's bedside. They are measured by everything that makes excellent care possible long before apatient ever meetsadoctor or nurse. This depotisan investment in the resilience ofour health system on essentials such ascleanlinen.”

Agroup of 48 children from Parow Park got the opportunity last week to visit the Long March to Freedom Exhibition at Century City as part of an excursion ahead of Mandela Day.

The visit was made possiblebythree local non-profits, Action 4Humanity, Called to ServeFoundation and Concerned Parents Association. These are run by Nikita Bezuidenhout and LeannNero

The children were from Parow West and De Tyger Primary School andbetween Grade 4and 7.

Bezuidenhout explained how the ideaof the trip had come about.

“Leann and Iwanted to do something differentthis year for Mandela Day,and since it’s school holidays we reached out to theNational Heritage Project Company, developer, owner and operatorofthe

The departmentsaid the Western Cape wasthe first provincial departmentof health in South Africa to sourceits linen throughthe Department of Labour's Service Productsprogramme. Underthis partnership linen is manufactured by people with disabilities employed at nine factories acrossthe country, creating inclusive employment opportunitieswhilst supplying essentialhealth-care services.

Wenger said the partnership demonstrateshow collaboration across government can improve public services.

LESSONSFROMSEVEREWEATHER

The importance of behind-the-scenes services was broughtinto sharp relief during recent severe storms thatdisrupted

roads andsupply chains across the region, thedepartmentsaid.

“When severe weather disrupted roads and supply chains earlier this year one of the greatestconcerns for Worcester Hospital was whether they would have enough clean linentocontinue caring for patients,”said Wenger. “Itwas apowerful reminderthat while patients may never thinkaboutlinen health-care simply cannot function without it.”

Thehospital was supported through collaboration between the Western Cape Disaster Management Centre, the Department of Healthand Wellness, and neighbouring health-care partners,

ensuring patient care continued uninterrupted despite widespread disruptions.

Wenger congratulated the Provincial Laundry and Linen team, laundry staff across the province, the Chief Directorate: Facilities and Infrastructure Management, the Commissioning Team, Metro Health Services and Stikland Hospital for their role in establishing the new depot without disrupting patient care. “The verybest support services are often invisible because they simply work,” she said. “They allow our nurses and doctorsto focus on caring for patients, knowing the systems behind them are strong.”

Other statues to see in the exhibit, aside from Mandela’s, include thoseofOliver Tambo, longest-serving president of the ANC, andother anti-apartheid and humanrights activists like Albertina Sisulu, Anglican Archbishop-Emeritus Desmond Tutu (whowas alsoanauthor and aNobel

Peace Prize winner), Johnny Clegg (also a performer and anthropologist) and Helen Suzman (a reformist politician). There are currently 100 statues in the exhibition, but Sarah Haines, director of the National Heritage Project Company, said more statues would be added as funding became available.

South Africa’s world-famous Rooibos is about to embark on itsmost extraordinary journey yet—to space.

In afirst for thecountry, Rooibos seeds will be launched to the InternationalSpace Station (ISS) later thisyear,wherethey will be exposed to the harsh conditions of space before returning to Earth in a pioneering scientific experiment that could shape future agriculture both on Earth and beyond.

The groundbreaking Rooibosin Space programmewas officially launched on Thursday at Parklands College’s InnovationCentre in Cape Town, bringing together leaders from government, education, agriculture, academia and South Africa’s growing space sector.

The initiative, conceived by the South African Rooibos Council(SARC), is being delivered in partnership with MaxIQ Space and supported by theSouthAfrican National Space Agency (SANSA)

It marks the first time South African Rooibosseeds will travel to the International Space Station aspart of an international space research programme

The experiment combines space science with agricultural innovation while inspiring the next generationofscientists throughhands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.

Visitors to the Long March to Freedom Exhibition at Century City, Cape Town, are now able to learn more aboutthe historybehindSouth Africa’smosticonic shoe,the veldskoen (field shoe).

This quintessential SouthAfrican footwear is also aworld-renowned brand, manufactured in Paarden Eiland by a company of the same name established in 2016, and has been recognised and honoured with aVeldskoen Plaque at the exhibition. Long March to Freedom unveiled the pe rmanent plaqueon7July, anditis where visitors can get an insight into the history ofthe handcrafted shoe.

Speaking to TygerBurger atthe exhibition this week Sarah Haines, director of the National Heritage Project Company, the non-profit that has developed, owns and operates the exhibition, said earlier versions ofthe veldskoen had been worn by indigenous people first. It has developed over the years into what today is asought-after shoe.

THEPLAQUE

According to the plaque the origins of the veldskoen can be traced back to the leather-working traditions of the indigenousKhoekhoen communities.

Hier op ons voorstoep is jongmense wat misdaad as die enigste uitweg sien, omdat diegene wat die meeste geld inhul gemeenskappe het, misdadigers is.Hoe gaan onsdaardie vlaagvan misdaadstop?

Die slim mense sê dis sosio-ekonomiese probleme wat tienersnamisdaad dryf, maar daardieomstandighede wordgevoed deur chroniese werk- en hopeloosheid.
