Maxine Bezuidenhout, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Traffic Services, confirmed that the department received a call at approximately 05:29 on Monday morning, 18 August, reporting an accident involving a taxi on Riverside Drive

According to Bezuidenhout, the driver of the vehicle lost control and collided with a lamp pole

“Six men and five women sustained slight injuries in the incident,”

Bezuidenhout said “They were treated at the scene and did not require hospitalisation Our officers are investigating the cause of the accident ”

This was the main message shared with a group of women at a Women's Day event held on Friday 15 August at the Lighthouse Christian Centre in Voortrekker Road, Parow, by keynote speaker Rachel Marcus from Radio Tygerberg 104FM

Marcus shared her life-story with the women and where she came from She encouraged women to put their past behind them, to not be defined by their past or their mistakes, but to move forward

She explained how she became a young single mother at 19 years, the loss of her husband in 2011 and her relationship with a drug addict Marcus further encouraged women not to wear a mask, reminded them that God can see right through it, and emphasised that they should not let people define who they are Kim Appollis from the non-profit organisation John 617, another guest speaker, also encouraged women to put their past behind them and said that no matter what you have been through or are facing today, as a woman you have the power to rise above it

"As women, we are often expected to be caregivers, nurturers and selfless But I want to remind you that self-care is not selfish, it is essential Take care of yourself, prioritise your well-being and invest in your own being

Classical music returns

Classical music lovers are in for a treat as the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) unveils a vibrant new season of four Spring Symphony concerts at the Cape Town City Hall. Running from Thursday 28 August to Thursday 18 September, this series promises a rich blend of classical masterpieces, contemporary works, and exciting premieres.

The season will be led by internationally renowned conductors Daniel Raiskin and Martin Panteleev, with Charlene Verster taking the baton for a curtain-raiser during the final concert

Over the past week, I saw a man strong, capable, and loving confront the unimaginable: the absence of the one person who has been a constant presence in his life since birth His grief was raw and unfiltered, spilling into every corner of the room and touching everyone near him I wanted to comfort him, to hold him, to take away the sorrow, but I could only be there, quiet, present, a steady hand and listening heart

The pain was multiplied when I had to explain to our three-year-old that his “Ma” had gone to heaven The innocence of a child makes grief even more poignant His small face scrunched with confusion and disbelief “No,” he said repeatedly, “she went to work and will be back ”

These are the first wild–bird detections in the province since April 2024 The public is therefore encouraged not to touch sick or dead birds and to report them to the authorities

Wild seabirds infected with HPAI often develop neurological signs such as tremors, head twitches and seizures

Although HPAI occasionally infects mammals and humans, the risk to the public remains very low when basic precautions are followed

WHATISHPAI?
