Edgemead and Bothasig areas both experienced electricity power outages last week The outages, according to Miquette Temlett, Ward councillor, occurred in Edgemead on Monday 4 August and Bothasig on Wednesday 6 August The outage in Bothasig comes two weeks after the area also experienced a water supply disruption

In a summary Temlett explained last week that the outage in Edgemead was due to the urgent replacement of a minisubstation "Communication was shared throughout the outage, and I commend the City's technical team for working tirelessly, even into the early hours of a cold and wet evening, to restore electricity as quickly and safely as possible," she says

The outage in Bothasig was unplanned and caused by a kiosk fire on Vryburger Avenue Unfortunately, no feedback has been received from Eskom to date, despite several escalations, her summary of the

event reads She continues to say that she has raised the matter directly with Eskom and that she was actively following up to ensure urgent attention

Eskom spokesperson, Kyle Cookson, did however confirm to TygerBurger on Wednesday that the outage in Bothasig was due to a cable fault He said the power was restored the same day

‘Breast is best’ highlighted during World BreastfeedingWeek

The provincial health department celebrated World Breastfeeding Week recently by highlighting the importance thereof, especially during the first six months after a newborn baby is birthed

The week was marked between Friday 1 August and Thursday 7 August

In a statement issued on Wednesday 6 August the department said the theme for this year, “Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems” recognises that no mother should have to do it alone

BREASTFEEDING:ALIFELINEFORFAMILIES

For the first six months of life, babies need nothing but breastmilk, a complete, living food that protects them from illness and helps them grow strong

Even after starting solid foods at six months, breastmilk continues to be a vital source of nutrients and comfort, the department said Mischke Joseph, clinical nurse practitioner at the Durbanville Clinic, explains why “Babies who are exclusively breastfed for six months have stronger immune systems and a lower risk of infections, asthma, and obesity Mothers who breastfeed have a lower risk of certain cancers and benefit emotionally from the close bond with their baby ”

Crystal Jacobs, a registered dietitian at Tygerberg Hospital, concurs “Investing in breastfeeding is investing directly in the future health and prosperity of our

communities ” Jacobs stresses the need for comprehensive access to support, education, and skilled counselling for new mothers

Employers can help by offering time and private spaces for mothers to breastfeed or express milk Families can step in to share household tasks and offer encouragement Communities can make public spaces welcoming and safe for breastfeeding mothers, the department explained Through its Mother Baby Friendly Initiative, the Western Cape government ensures that newborns are placed skin-toskin with their mothers immediately after birth for at least one hour; that mothers are taught Kangaroo Mother Care to strengthen bonding and growth as well as provides ongoing breastfeeding support which is available at clinics and hospitals across the province

Mothers who are struggling with breastfeeding can visit their nearest clinic for free, and receive confidential advice from trained nurses

Beekeeping: definitely not a side hustle

Last summer, I fancied trying my hand at beekeeping

It wasn’t a random thought Almost everyone I knew had a side hustle, and my previous one, captioning for online streaming platforms, had been made redundant by AI, so I was on the lookout for something new But the idea first took hold when a swarm of bees unexpectedly took up residence in our wall

When life gives you bees, sell honey, I’d thought, but I quickly abandoned the idea, much to my husband’s relief That weekend I learned beekeeping isn’t a side hustle it’s a full-time job

The revelation began when my husband noticed a few bees buzzing around the air vent on our back wall

At first, we weren’t concerned There are always a few bees about, but eventually the vent began attracting an unusual amount of attention

We later learned from the beekeeper that the first bees hubby had seen were scouts

I wondered if they’d moved on, but the beekeeper arrived, opened the vent and revealed a hive the size of a large hat with hundreds of silent bees busily buzzing about their business

I phoned a beekeeper, who didn’t come cheap He advised us to keep an eye on things and send him videos so he could assess the situation He’d come by on Monday if it got worse

It got worse

Sometime later, hubby went outside with his phone and returned shouting He’s not squeamish, but bees swarming are a freakish sight “I looked up and I just saw black,” he said

In his first attempt at filming, he got stung Undeterred, he tried again from

My youngest and I watched through the window as the beekeeper scooped the hive out by the handful and placed it into a box, loosely covered with a sheet

The trick, he explained, was catching the queen Once she was out, the workers high from the smoke he’d pumped inside would follow quietly Then he loaded the box into his car to take them away

A few foragers might return, he said, but they’d either leave or die

“Or just squirt them with Doom,” he added

Hubby posted the swarm videos on his status, and friends immediately began requesting honey I asked the beekeeper if we’d at least get any honey out of the ordeal

He cheekily replied, “If you want, next year I can come back and sell you the honey from your wall ”

With our recent visit to family in Durbanville it was such a blessing to meet a friendly person in the form of the security guard when we visited Hennies on Friday afternoon

Not only were we greeted politely but we observed many times how he would keep vagrants away from where we sat outside and cars

He even, while we were still there, assisted an

elderly gentleman changing his flat tyre while many persons just walked past

The SATA Junior Touchboks of the Western Cape were welcomed back at Cape Town International Airport by family and friends on Tuesday, returning from the Atlantic Youth Touch Cup 2025, held in Ireland from 1 to 3 August

The national team, which includes players from the Western Cape, KwaZuluNatal and Gauteng, departed for Ireland on 27 July, following a meet-up in Johannesburg the day before South Africa competed across four divisions: u-18 Girls (bronze medal), u-18 Mixed (6th place), u-20 Ladies (bronze medal); u-20 Mixed (bronze medal)

In total, South Africa brought three bronze medals home, a commendable achievement on the international stage Over three days the teams faced-off against top-tier competition, including Ireland, England and Scotland

Tygerberg Darts Association has brought home gold and silver from the 2025 National Darts Championships, recently held at the Wild Coast Resort and Casino on the Eastern Cape–KwaZulu-Natal border

The association, re-established in 2023 by Pierre Basson after closing down several years ago, has grown from just 46 players in its first year to 151 active members across five clubs

This year’s nationals, held from 15 to 19 July, featured three main divisions for men and women: Inter Provincial, Inter District and Inter Association The Inter Provincial division represents the Western Cape, selected from all associations in the province The Inter District division features the Cape Town team, chosen from players within 10 Cape Town associations The Inter Association division fields teams from affiliated clubs within each association

According to a committee member Pieta Olivier, Tygerberg’s teams made remarkable progress

“Last year in Bloemfontein, our men’s and ladies’ teams finished fourth in Tier 6 of the Inter Association event This year, we moved up to Tier 5 for men and Tier 4 for ladies ”

The mens team went unbeaten throughout the week, securing a gold medal The ladies’ team narrowly lost their final game, earning a silver medal in their tier

Adding to the achievement, two Tygerberg players represented Cape Town in the Inter District division: Biancha Truter Basson for the ladies and Francois Matthee for the men The Cape Town ladies’ team claimed gold

Tygerberg Darts Association is also part of the national youth development initiative, the 180 Plus Programme, which partners with local schools to teach darts skills and scoring

“Darts improves maths ability because you are constantly working with numbers,

whether scoring, playing, or calculating combinations to win,” Olivier explains The association encourages anyone interested regardless of age or gender to join

Weekly league games are played on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Goodwood Cricket Club, open to the public, with a fully licensed bar and kitchen available
