With Cape Town now ranked as the 9th most congested city in the world on the 2024 INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard, the Western Cape’s new Mobility Month was launched on Wednesday with a bold call to action from provincial minister of mobility, Isaac Sileku, urging a fundamental shift in how we move people and goods across the province

With the average driver losing 94 hours a year stuck in traffic, the equivalent of two working weeks, its costing the local economy an estimated R3 billion annually Kicking off the month-long initiative, Sileku convened a high-level panel of transport experts, academics and key industry players to unpack one of the Western Cape’s thorniest challenges –traffic congestion – and to map out a more connected, sustainable future

“Congestion is not just an inconvenience It hurts our economy, our environment, and most importantly, our people’s livelihoods,” Sileku said in his keynote address “We cannot build around congestion We must manage it, collectively and innovatively ”

The panel discussion held under the theme "Managing Mobility Together" included representatives from the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa), Golden Arrow Bus Services, Santaco, and the University of Cape Town, among others

Urban farmers in Brackenfell have reached out to the community for help in caring for 480 fruit trees at the Suikerbossie Park Community Garden in Protea Village

A BackaBuddy campaign has been launched to raise funds for the ongoing maintenance of the trees

The garden, considered the heartbeat of the community, was inspired in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic to provide food security to families in need

Once a public open space plagued by crime, the land was transformed in 2022 by resident Mandy Leibbrandt and a group of volunteer gardeners, all locals from the neighbourhood Together, they turned the barren two-hectare park into a thriving food garden, now home to 42 vegetable patches and 480 fruit trees

To formalise their efforts, the non-profit Apple Tree was established The City of Cape Town supported the initiative by signing a five-year lease with the organisation, allowing the use of the public park for urban farming

“The vegetables are planted and nurtured by the gardeners,” says Leibbrandt “Once a month, we have large harvests The gardeners keep some for their own use, and the rest is bagged and delivered directly to nearly 50 homes in need ”

The trees, a mix of fruit-bearing and indigenous species, were donated by the provincial department of agriculture, forestry and fisheries as part of an

initiative to create an urban forest and help combat climate change

"As residents pay our rates and taxes to local government to provide us with roads to get to work, to live and conduct our business and take our children to school It is their responsibility, not Sanral's Van Zijl said the community is now in a situation where the City is seemingly dishing its responsibility of the road, while the community is left to engage with Sanral to get the bridge problem solved

He referred to a recent survey done by the Northern District Community Forum (NDCF) in which 4 280 motorists indicated the severe traffic congestion on Brackenfell boulevard for residents and business at certain times during the day

In this survey 78,1% of people said traffic congestion over the bridge is extremely serious and disruptive while 20,8% said it was serious and disruptive A total of 80% stated that converting the road over the bridge to three lanes without widening the structure will not alleviate the traffic

Representatives made it clear that there is growing frustration over the disconnect between the City and Sanral, as well as the ongoing traffic issues on Brackenfell Boulevard Stakeholders agreed that the forum will continue to act as a mediator to encourage constructive engagement between the City and Sanral, aiming to resolve the issue and address the community’s concerns

Stakeholders concluded that as a forum it will continue to play a mediating role in order to get the City and Sanral to engage constructively in order to find a solution In response to a media inquiry by TygerBurger, Rob Quintas, Mayco member for urban mobility, stated that the City had communicated that they would only attend the above mentioned meeting once they have received confirmation on whether Sanral would be in attendance, and who would be representing Sanral at the meeting
