Mervelec’s work is among those featured at the second Cape Town Photography Festival taking place from Wednesday 2 to Saturday 26 September. The festival will feature 40 exhibitions and more than 160 photographers at venues across the city. It explores the theme of “Truth” – an exploration of how truths are produced, challenged and resisted. “I’d like visitors to encounter an image that makes them stop, question something they thought they understood, or see their own world in a new way,” says de Mervelec, who settled in South Africa in the 1990s. The festival is also contributing to conversations around a national music photography archive, an initiative that grew from concerns about preserving South Africa’s photographic record of its musical heritage. renda Hansen, councillor for Ward 111 in Brackenfell and Kraaifontein took to social media on Friday to announce she is “being replaced as Ward councillor by the DA”. TygerBurger has since learned that Hansen’s name is absent from the party’s candidate list for the upcoming election. This comes a week after the Bracken Heights Community Forum (BHCF) submitted a formal grievance blaming Hansen and the City for bypassing public consultation on the Brackenfell High School roadworks within Bracken Heights. The forum called for an immediate disciplinary investigation into Hansen over her handling of the Brackenfell High School infrastructure project. In a letter sent to the Subcouncil 2 manager, the Speaker of Council and Mayco member for urban mobility Rob Quintas, the forum accuses Hansen of gross dereliction of statutory duty, failure

to exercise her fiduciary duty of care, and direct breaches of the Code of Conduct for councillors under Schedule 7 of the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act. “An audit of minuted Project Liaison Committee (PLC) meetings spanning 15 months from February 2025 to May 2026 found that Hansen, who was the sole political and community representative for the school’s construction, was absent from 12 of 14 meetings, an 86% absentee rate,” the forum alleges in the letter. According to the audit conducted by the forum, 14 PLC meetings held between February 2025 and May 2026 show the transport directorate attended 0% of meetings, while the WCED attended 7%. TO PAGE 4
