One of South Africa's most senior police officials hasthrownhis weight behind Cape Town'spush to give its metro police greater powers —and the City saysithas 6000 officers ready to prove their worth.

Cape Town MayorGeordin Hill-Lewis has welcomedpublic backing from the Western Cape South policecommissioner Lieut GenThembisile Patekile for the expansion of metro policepowers, calling it confirmation of aposition the City has longadvocated.

In an interviewwith News24,Patekile statedthat certain functions could be assigned to metro police to free police officers to focus on specialised investigations, citing resource constraints within theservice.

Mayor Hill-Lewis said crime investigation powers were of particular importance,noting that while metro police officers remove more than400 illegal firearms from thestreets annually, the conviction rate in suchcases stands at just 5%.

He attributed this to what he described as abroken criminal justice system, and said expanded powers would help the policethe National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) secure more convictions for gang, gun,and drug-relatedoffences.

Themayor, however, cautioned that political will remained asignificant obstacletoexpanding metro police powers at anational level.

"Political will to expand policing powers for metro police remains amajor obstacle. That's why we welcome voices such as the Commissioner's, andhope he is heard at thehighest levels of national government," said MayorHill-Lewis.

In 2025, as reported by TygerBurger, the City of Cape Town escalated its push to have certain national policing powers devolved to itsmetro police, tabling a formal resolution at acouncil meeting through the intergovernmental dispute framework after receiving no meaningful response from the national police commissioner to aprevious letter from Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

Thepowers being sought include investigative authority over gang-related violence, firearm offences, extortion, and drug trafficking, as well as access to crime intelligence data and control over forensic ballistics testing laboratories.

Chair of the City's safetyand security portfolio committee, Mzwakhe Nqavashe, told TygerBurger the current system was failing residents. He pointed to chronic laboratory backlogs causing criminal cases to be struck from the court roll, and the absence of real-time crime intelligence leaving metro police reactive rather than preventative. Despite the City removing nearly 2000 illegal firearms from the streetsinrecent years, conviction rates remained disproportionately low, according to him.

AccordingtoSmart SecuritySolutions, Facebook Marketplace scams cast awide net,targeting both buyers and sellers through an array of deceptive tactics, among themfakepayments,fraudulent deposits, andaccount hijacking all designedtostrip victimsoftheir money, personal data, or control of theirFacebook accounts.

Amongthe mostprevalent schemes targetingsellers is the fake payment or overpayment scam. In atypical scenario, awould-be buyer agrees to purchase an itembut claims to be unable to collect it in person.They proceed to send a counterfeit proof of payment, often made to appear as though it originates from alegitimatebank transfer or payment platform. In many cases, thefraudster then claims to have accidentally overpaid, urging the seller to refund the difference via an instantpayment service before the sellerdiscovers that no money was ever received.

Redflags include buyers who offer more than the askingpricewithout negotiation, show no interest in bargaining, or insist on arrangingdelivery through athirdparty courier.

Buyers, too, are far from immune.

Advance fee and non-delivery scams pose asignificantthreat, with fraudsters listinghigh-demandgoods such as vehicles,smartphones andevent tickets at conspicuously low prices, only to request an upfront deposit to secure or courier the item.

Once payment is made, they vanish without atrace. Common warning signs include aseller’sreluctance to meet in person, pressure to pay through untraceable channels such as gift cards or wire transfers, and vague explanations about being out of town or out of the country.

Experts advise keeping transactions local wherever possible, meeting in a public space, ideally outside apolice station and using cash for in-person exchanges. All communication should remain within Facebook Messenger,as scammers frequently attempt to migrate conversations to WhatsApp in order to sidestep Marketplace’s built-in tracking systems.

South Africa's premier open chess tournament is set to returntoCape Townfrom Saturday 27 June to Sunday 5July, when the South African OpenChess Championship takes centre stage at DF Akademie High School for nine days of competitive play.

Met Suid-Afrikasegeskiedenis,hoe durf hy?

Metdie stand van sake in ons land,hoe durf hy?

Hoeveelmense het niehul lewens verloornet vir die regomte stem nie?

Gister hetons Jeugdag gevier, die dag waarop duisende jongmense in 1976 opgeruk het, en baie hul lewens verloor het, teen 'n onregverdige onderwysstelsel. Die opstand wat gewelddadig geraak het –die bekende foto van Hector Pietersonisinmygeheue gegrif –was hul manier om te veg om gehoorteword.

In 'n erawaar slegs 'n selektiewe handjievol mense die reg gehadhet omte stem, was hierdie hul "stem" vir 'n beter toekoms, een waar hulleselfoor hul lot konbesluit.

Nou, hoe dan kan hierdie jong manweier om sy kruisie by die stembus te trek?

Met 'n tekort aan skole, hoëkoste van onderwys, dienslewering wat agteruitgaan (dalknie so erg in die Kaap sooselders in die landnie), korrupsie en 'n hoë werkloosheidssyfer, hoe kanhynie sy sê wilsêter wille van verbetering nie?

DIEREALITEITISEGTERDAT VERSKEIEJONGMENSE, DALKSELFSDIEGROTER MEERDERHEID,DIESELFDEVOEL

"Hoekom?" word hy gevra.

"Want ek stem nie ooreen met enige van die partye se ideale nie ..."

Die realiteit is egter dat verskeie jongmense, dalk selfs die groter meerderheid, dieselfde voel

Ek het daardie selfde woorde en variasies wat op dieselfdeneerkom, al uit ander jongmense se monde gehoor: "Hulle praat nie my taal nie wegbly is ook'nstem, 'n standpunt."

Hoeveelpolitieke partye praatregtigmet die jeug?

Vra jy die een hoekom, is hul antwoord: "vir 'n beter toekoms". Die ander lê klem op ons land se swaar geskiedenis. Maar uit 'n jongeling se oëisnie een van hierdie geldige antwoorde nie.

Nie een van hulle is tydensapartheid gebore nie. Nie een van hulle hetdaardeur geleef nie. Diegeskiedenis iswel vir baie van hulle belangrik, maar ditwordnie meer gesien as 'n geldige rede om 'n dag op te gee om by die stembus tou te staannie Hul besluite word geneem volgens wat hulle vandag hoor en sien.

Nou, wat dan van 'n beter toekoms?

Die meeste sien deur dieslimpraatjies en leëbeloftes van die politici. Hulle sien die dadeendie stand van sake inons land wat getuig van 31 jaar se leëbeloftes vir 'n beter toekoms.

Op sosiale media, die een plek om vandag die jeug te bereik, word diejongelinge ooknie geflous deur diéwat wel daar partypolitiek speel se slim veldtogte nie. Hulle weet goed die politici spring skielik kort voor 'n verkiesing aan diewerk –luister maar net na ma en pa se gesanik daaroor.

Hulle soek dadebywoorde; hulle wildie veranderingeers met hul eieoësien

Diekomendenaweek is registrasienaweekvir die opkomende plaaslike verkiesing.Enterwyl ek die jeug wil aanmoedig om te stem, is ek bevrees daardie woorde gaan op dowe ore val.Soos dieeen gesê het: "wegbly is ook 'n stem".

Dit is een van die grootste vreugdes van die markspan om jaar ná jaar te sien hoe entrepreneurs ontwikkel en sukses behaal."

Die Proteahoogte-wintermark is egter veel meer as net 'n inkopie-ervaring. Die mark skep ook waardevolle geleenthede vir tieners en studente om praktiese werkservaring op te doen. Jongmense kry die kans om vaardighedeaan te leer, verantwoordelikheid te ontwikkel en ervaring op te bou wat hul toekomstige loopbaan kan ondersteun.
