Polisievrou het wye erkenning van die gemeenskap ontvang vir haar aangrypende gedig opgedra aan slagoffers van kindermishandeling. Sers. Charlene Petersen, wat by die Brackenfell-polisiekantoor se eenheid vir maatskaplike misdaadvoorkoming gesetel is, het die gedig geskryf om bewustheid te skep gedurende die internasionale veldtog van 16 Dae van Aktivisme teen Geweld teenoor Vroue en Kinders, wat op 10 Desember ten einde geloop het. Sy vertel dat die gedig, wat op 3 Desember in TygerBurger se brieweblad gepubliseer is, geïnspireer is deur haar daaglikse werk met mishandelde vroue en kinders. “Tydens my stiltetye skryf ek oor sake wat swaar op my hart rus. Die woorde weerspieël die ervaring van mishandelde kinders,” verduidelik sy. “Nadat die gedig verskyn het, het talle mense my gebel – sommige wat hul eie ervarings gedeel het; ander wat dankbaarheid betuig het.” Petersen werk nou saam met Badisa Kraaifontein om in te gryp wanneer mishandeling aangemeld word. Volgens haar is kindermishandeling en gesinsgeweld ’n alledaagse verskynsel; iets wat op alle vlakke van die samelewing voorkom. Sy verwys na ’n onlangse geval waar twee kinders van drie en vyf jaar oud deur hul ma mishandel is – onder hulle pa se oë. “In dié geval is die kinders deur beide ouers gewaarsku om nie uit te praat nie. Die mishandeling word genormaliseer en die kinders word vertel dat die polisie die ‘monsters’ is.” “Vir baie kinders is dit normaal dat hul ouers dag en nag skreeu en skel,

Kindermishandeling het egter ’n wye spektrum en kan ook verwaarlosing insluit,” sê sy. “Waar onmiddellike familielede nie die kind kan inneem nie, sal Badisa die kind in ’n veilige plek plaas,” verduidelik sy. “Die polisie bied ook slagofferondersteuning aan die kinders, met behulp van ’n groot netwerk vrywilligers.” Haar grootste kommer is dat lede van die gemeenskap en families kindermishandeling óf oor die hoof sien, óf bewustelik versuim om dit aan te meld. “Om stil te bly is nie die antwoord nie, en nie in belang van die kind wat nie ’n stem het nie.” Die Suid-Afrikaanse regering het vanjaar geslagsgeweld en die moord op vroue amptelik tot ’n nasionale ramp van die Rampbestuurswet verklaar ná bevindinge dat geslagsgeweld weens voortdurende

lewensgevare nou aan die wetlike vereistes van ’n ramp voldoen. Volgens Badisa se jaarverslag vir 2025 is die afgelope boekjaar 2 254 gevalle van kindermishandeling in die Wes-Kaap en dele van die Oos- en Noord-Kaap aangemeld. Altesaam 336 kinders is in pleegsorg geplaas, wat die huidige getal kinders in pleegsorg tot 4 180 laat styg het. Addisionele kinders is in versorgingsentrums gehuisves, terwyl 60 nog op plasing wag.

‘Blank cheque’ challenged

he Western Cape High Court has reserved judgement in a landmark legal challenge that could transform municipal financing nationwide. The South African Property Owners Association (SAPOA) and Afriforum squared off against the City of Cape Town over three days last week in a hearing centred on whether municipalities have the constitutional authority to impose fixed charges based on property values — a practice SAPOA argues amounts to an unconstitutional “blank cheque” for local government spending. The matter was heard by a full bench of three senior judges — Judge President Nolwazi Mabindla-Boqwana, as well as presiding judges Andre le Grange and Katharine Savage. The legal clash centres on SAPOA and AfriForum's bid to have three contentious budget tariffs covering cleaning, fixed water charges, and fixed sanitation — as introduced in the City's 2025-'26 Budget — struck down as unconstitutional. While the City insists these are legitimate service charges rather than rates, it has raised the stakes considerably with a bold counter-application. Should the court rule against the municipality, Cape Town wants Section 75A of the Systems Act itself declared invalid, arguing that such a decision would cripple its constitutional mandate to deliver municipal services. “In essence, SAPOA argued that the City does not have the power, in terms of the Constitution and the applicable legislation, to raise fixed charges based on property value bands,” comments SAPOA CEO, Neil Gopal. According to Gopal, the Court specifically asked the City of Cape Town’s counsel whether there is any legislative requirement that the City, or any other municipality for that matter, is required to “tighten its belt”. “The City was unable to point out any such requirement, and merely argued that salaries, its biggest expense, are set at a national level. SAPOA and its members have no objection to the principle of subsidisation, or to pay its fair share of municipal service costs. The problem arises, however, if a municipality is given unbridled power and a blank cheque to do as it pleases. Municipalities across the country, including the City of Cape Town and others that regularly receive clean audits, must also be held accountable on the way taxpayers’ money is spent,” says Gopal. “The Court reserved judgment, but no indication has been given as to when it may be expected. The Court did point out, however, that this is a complex matter, that requires careful adjudication, and that it is mindful of the effect that this judgment may have on other municipalities throughout the country.”

Die groep, tesame met wetstoepassingsbeamptes sowel as die wykraadslid Rhynhardt Bresler en vrywilligers van ’n plaaslike kerk het die strate van Windsorpark met skoonmaakmiddels en verfpotte ingevaar. Die inisiatief, onder leiding van Bresler, is daarop gemik om nie net onooglike graffiti te verwyder nie, maar ook om die jeug oor die invloed van onwettige graffiti op te voed en oor hul rol in die bekamping daarvan te bemagtig.
GROEP VERF OOR GRAFFITI OP INFRASTRUKTUUR “Hierdie projek gaan oor meer as net verf en mure – dit gaan daaroor om trots in ons gemeenskap te vestig en ons jong mense ’n gevoel van eienaarskap te gee,” sê Bresler. Die projek het in Oktober begin toe die jongmense deur die buurt gestap het om die graffiti op te spoor, foto’s daarvan te neem en die bevindinge in ’n album saam te stel. Daarna het die groep die onderskeie skoonmaakdae begin reël. “Die langtermynplan sluit ’n gemeenskapsmoniteringstelsel en ’n vinnige reaksiespan in om nuwe graffiti te verwyder sodra dit verskyn. sal aangemoedig word om nuwe graffiti aan te meld sodra hulle dit sien,” het Bresler verduidelik. “Dit sal help om ’n volhoubare stelsel te skep om ons strate skoon te hou.” Die 23-jarige Davido Portella het by die projek aangesluit om “deel van die oplossing te wees.” “Ek wil help om ons gemeenskap ’n beter plek vir almal te maak en jy moet êrens begin,” het hy aan TygerBurger gesê. “Graffiti – veral bendeverwant – het ’n baie negatiewe invloed op die woonbuurt.” Volgens Bresler het herhaalde terugvoer van inwoners van Windsorpark ’n groeiende kommer oor graffiti op openbare infrastruktuur – veral stoptekens, kragbokse en openbare mure – aan die lig gebring. Volgens Louise Strydom van die Kraaifontein-polisie is graffiti ’n vorm van uitdrukking, maar wanneer dit negatief gebruik word – veral deur bendes – skep dit vrees en beskadig dit die gemeenskap se beeld. “Hoewel graffiti as ’n kunsvorm en ’n medium vir sosiale kommentaar begin het, het die gebruik daarvan deur bendes in die laat 1980’s aanleiding gegee tot etikettering — graffiti wat gebruik word om grondgebied op te eis of gemeenskappe te intimideer. Anders as graffiti-kunswerke, wat artistieke of kulturele waarde kan hê, word etikettering dikwels as sinnelose vandalisme beskou,” verduidelik sy. “Dit is ook ’n strafregtelike oortreding wat die vernietiging van openbare eiendom behels.” Die Shincheonji-vrywilliger Anke Cyster het die groep gemotiveer om eienaarskap van hul omgewing te neem. “Die wêreld wat ons wil hê, is die wêreld wat ons bou. Verandering begin by ons, die jongmense van vandag.”

Bresler sê die sukses van die projek is verblywend. “Ons het gesien dat die gemeenskap ook nou self begin het om die graffiti skoon te maak nadat hulle in die TygerBurger daarvan gelees het. “Ons wil die gemeenskap deur middel van die projek aanspoor om verantwoordelikheid vir hul omgewing te aanvaar,” sê hy.

rackenfell and Scottsdene in Kraaifontein was among several areas in Cape Town where a total of 49 km of water and sewer pipes were replaced since July this year. The City states that the water and sanitation directorate is on track with its annual water and sewer pipe replacement programme, to help maintain reliable services for residents. In October alone, a total of 20,63 km of water and sewer pipes were replaced. "With this latest progress, the total pipe replacement for the 2025-'26 financial year now stands at 23,17 km of water pipes and 26,03 km of sewer pipes. This is 46% of the targeted 50km of water pipes and 26% of the 100km of sewer pipes which the City aims to replace this financial year. “This steady progress reflects the City’s commitment to renewing ageing infrastructure," says Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for water and sanitation. In Brackenfell a total of 1668 meters of pipe replacements have been done in the St Michaels area, according to Ward 8

The Cape Hunters and Game Conservation Association (Kaapjag) will present a family fun day at the range of the Durbanville Shooting Club on Saturday 17 January from 09:00. The association, established in 1984 by a group of hunters concerned about the preservation of game, has more than 3 600 hunters and sport shooters. The Confederation of Hunting Associations of South Africa (Chasa) helps train and improve sport shooting. TAKE PART AS TEAM The Chasa .22 gong shoot will now have a family-entry option, with special team prizes for the best family of shooters. “The gong shoot is designed to provide a competitive and level playing field for all to participate,” said Paul Harding, chair of Kaapjag Central. It uses steel plates of varying sizes suspended at various distances. There are four ranges of five gongs each – sitting, standing, prone 1 (laying down) and prone 2. The gongs are square but suspended to display as a diamond shape. Sitting in prone 1, the competitor must use the side of the tripod to rest their rifle,” Harding related, “and both buttocks
must be on the ground to two 50 mm gongs, two 75 mm gongs and one 100 m gong, spaced 50 m to 67 m apart. Standing, the competitor must rest their rifle by one point of contact on top of a tripod, to one 50 mm gong, two 75 mm gongs and two 100m gongs spaced by 67 m to 84 m.” In prone 1, the competitor is prone on the ground (lying on stomach) with rifle on a standard-sized block or using a bipod. There are two 50mm gongs, and three 100m gigs spaced by 67 m and 84 m. In prone 2 the competitor is on the ground on their stomach, rifle on a standard-sized block or bipod. There is one 50 mm gong, two 75 mm gongs and two 100m gongs spaced by 75 m and 104 m. "Each stage is timed with a maximum time allowed for the five shots of 120 seconds,” Harding said. “Extra shots or shots fired outside the time are penalised. A hit equals 30 points, a miss equals zero and a penalty is minus 30 points. The maximum score is 600 points. Registration is from 07:30 to 08:30. The cost per family is R450. Airport plan enters design phase

ape Winelands Airport announced last week that it has entered into an agreement with WBHO as the contractor for the technical development and construction of the airport as part of the airport’s multibillion-rand expansion programme. “With the contractor now formally on board, the project advances into a crucial new phase — detailed technical development and planning. These appointments will enable the team to begin developing the specific designs and engineering frameworks required to move the project toward construction readiness. This process will also provide clearer insights into overall timelines and costs,” explained Deon Cloete, managing director of Cape Winelands Airport, in a joint media release with WBHO last Tuesday. WBHO, the technical development partner for Cape Winelands Airport, is a heavyweight in South Africa’s construction sector and one of the country’s largest publicly listed firms, with deep expertise in infrastructure, civil engineering, roads and earthworks. Best known for delivering major infrastructure projects and technically demanding projects, WBHO has built everything from stadiums and dams to airports and highways, says Deidre Davids, spokesperson for Cape Winelands Airport, in the media release. MOST SIGNIFICANT AVIATION INVESTMENT The Cape Winelands Airport expansion, estimated to cost approximately R8 billion, is one of South Africa’s most significant aviation infrastructure investments. It includes the construction of a new boutique terminal, extended and realigned runway infrastructure, upgraded airside systems, enhanced cargo and logistics

responsibilities across the 450 ha aviation precinct’s logistics, commercial and hospitality components. As the project enters its detailed technical development phase, the newly appointed contracting partner will work closely with the Cape Winelands Airport team. This next stage will bring greater clarity on what must be done to achieve construction readiness and the delivery of a future-focused aviation precinct for the province. oc MacLean, legendary American blues guitarist and troubadour, returns to Villa Pascal Guesthouse in Durbanville on Sunday 18 January from 16:00 to tell songs and sing stories in an emotional remapping of the contemporary Delta Blues. Doc MacLean played Charlie Patton songs in Son House's living room 46 years ago. Gershwin spectacular set for Maynardville Open-Air Festival Cape Town Opera will transport audiences back to the golden age of American music when it presents Gershwin in the Park, a one-night-only concert celebration at the Maynardville Open-Air Festival on Sunday 15 February 2026. Baghel returns to Artscape Pratibha Singh Baghel, who performed to a sold-out audience during her 2023 Symphony of Love concert with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, returns for a one-night-only performance called Encore at Artscape on Saturday 31 January at 20:30. The concert, produced by Cape Town-based Inner Circle Entertainment, will feature a different format from her previous symphony performance – an acoustic evening showcasing Bollywood classics, ghazals, and contemporary hits. Vernuwende stem in die Afrikaanse letterkunde het die land se grootste skrywersbeurs gewen. S.P. Benjamin, oorspronklik van Kraaifontein in Kaapstad en wat nou in Malmesbury woon, is as die 2026-wenner van die gesogte Jan Rabie & Marjorie Wallace-skrywersbeurs aangewys –’n toekenning wat hom in staat stel om sy ambisieuse romanprojek sonder finansiële druk te voltooi. Die beurs is tot stand gebring deur ’n bemaking van wyle Marjorie Wallace om kreatiewe Afrikaanse skryfwerk te bevorder – iets waarvoor Benjamin bekend is. Sedert die eerste toekenning in 2010 is die Jan Rabie en Marjorie Wallaceskrywersbeurs die grootste beurs in SuidAfrika vir die bevordering van skeppende skryfwerk. “Dit dra kragtige getuienis van Jan Rabie en Marjorie Wallace se volgehoue visie om gehalte Afrikaanse kreatiewe werk te ondersteun,” het prof. Robert Balfour, rektor en vise-kanselier van die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland (UWK), met die onlangse aankondiging gesê. “Die universiteit is saam met die skrywers trots op die erkenning en pryse wat talle van die publikasies, wat uit hierdie beurs voortgespruit het, reeds ontvang het.”
BIED RUIMTE AAN SKRYWERS Balfour het sy waardering teenoor die fondsbestuurder en die Jan Rabie en Marjorie Wallace-bestuurskomitee uitgespreek. “Dit stel die UWK in staat om gestalte te gee aan Wallace se wens om vir skrywers die nodige tyd en ruimte te skep om te skryf — vry van die bekommernis om ’n inkomste te skep.” ’n Beurskomitee bestaande uit kundiges
“Ek hou nie daarvan dat jy in boksies gedruk word nie.” - S.P. Benjamin in die skrywerswêreld het Benjamin se aansoek eenparig aanbeveel. Die komitee het 31 projekvoorstelle oorweeg en beskryf die gehalte van inskrywings as “besonder indrukwekkend in omvang, gehalte en opsigtelike talent”. Volgens die komitee het die voorgestelde temas nuwe wêrelde betree en gewissel van merkwaardige, maar vergete geskiedkundige gebeurtenisse, die fases van vrouwees, spioenasie en satire tot randfigure soos sekswerkers en gevangenes wat met hul komplekse verlede worstel. Die kandidate het gewissel van debuutskrywers tot Hertzogpryswenners. Die komitee het beklemtoon dat die groot aantal sterk inskrywings die stygende behoefte aan ondersteuning vir skrywers bevestig en dat daar potensiaal is vir ’n letterkundige renaissance. ONGEWONE TEMA Benjamin se voorgestelde roman fokus op ’n ongewone, verrassende tema en ontgin op unieke wyse die persoonlike verhoudings tussen mense uit uiteenlopende agtergronde. Hy beskryf homself as ’n onvoorspelbare skrywer wat onderwerpe aanpak wat ander skrywers óf vermy óf met groot versigtigheid benader. Tipering staan hom ook nie aan nie. “Ek hou nie daarvan dat jy in boksies gedruk word nie. Daar word verwys na bruin skrywers, en dis nie vir my reg nie. Skryf ek net oor ‘bruinwees-issues’, of het ek nie die reg om oor breër kwessies te skryf nie?” het hy in ’n gesprek met
TygerBurger gesê. “As jy wil lees van seemeeue en die blou see, dan is ek seker nie die soort skrywer vir jou nie ... dis nie vir ’n Sondag- agtermiddag se lees nie. Daar is baie dinge, nie altyd mooi nie, wat in die Wes-Kaap gebeur. Mense kry swaar en dis ’n wêreld wat verlig moet word,” sê hy. Benjamin is in 1965 in Kraaifontein gebore. Hy het aan Scottsdene Senior Sekondêre Skool matrikuleer, waar sy onderwysers hom aangemoedig het om opstelle te skryf. Hier het hy ’n liefde vir skryf ontwikkel. Ná skool het hy begin poësie skryf. Sy gedigte “Vers as teken van my dankbaarheid” en “Want ons hoere is groener weivelde” is deur Johann de Lange en Antjie Krog in die versamelbundel Die dye trek die dye aan opgeneem en sy gedig “Vergeef hulle want hulle weet nie wat hulle doen nie” word op skool voorgeskryf. Algaande spits hy hom egter meer toe op prosa. Twee jaar voor die publikasie van sy debuutroman het hy met sy kortverhaal Die jaar toe ons almal mal was ’n eerste prys in die Kagiso-De Jager-Haumkortverhaalwedstryd verower. Hy het later sy debuutroman, Die reuk van steenkool, op bogenoemde kortverhaal gegrond. Dié roman is in 1997 met die Sanlam/De Kat-debuutprys bekroon, was in 1998 die naaswenner van die ATKVProsaprys en was in 1998 op die kortlys vir die M-Net-prys. Die titel verwys na die pa se reuk waarmee Lukas hom vereenselwig. Dit behandel grepe uit die lewe van ’n alledaagse familie — die Du Toit-gesin in ’n kleurlingwoonbuurt voor die beëindiging van Apartheid, terwyl geweld in hierdie laaste jare voor demokrasie hoogty vier.

26-year-old sprint and track athlete from Loevenstein in Bellville is still in awe after his latest achievement at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. The event took place from Saturday 13 September to Sunday 21 September. Gardeo Isaacs says he still can't believe it. "It is still sinking in, and I must get used to a medal," he says in his family home still recovering from jet lag. He recently won a bronze medal at the Tokyo World Championship Athletics 2025 as part of the South African men's 4x400m relay team. The team secured the bronze medal with a time of 2:57.83 seconds, narrowly missing silver. Isaacs says the last time SA won a medal was in 2017. So, to him this means something major for the country, and it also means they are somehow headed in the right direction. He says for the next generation this was an inspiration. Isaacs says he's not doing this for himself but for his family and also the country, as this was

Faraz Khatieb has been selected to represent South Africa at the Continental Africa Championship in Kenya next month. According to Reygana Khatieb, Faraz's mother, her son lives for cycling and has very big dreams. "If you've seen Faraz cycling around the area, you probably think he's just another kid on a bike but let me tell you what you are actually seeing. You are seeing a 16-year-old who rushes home from school every day to train many kilometres four days a week, and races over weekends in the u-19 category but competes against elite riders aged 23 and older – and consistently finishes in the top 10. "He's a boy who was part of the Tour Du Cap winning team earlier this year, came 16th in the Cape Argus Cycle Tour, two seconds off the winning time, won

SUCCESS Being an athlete, or any successful sport means a lot of sacrifices. Isaacs says: "Obviously, if you're a sports person in general - I had to personally sacrifice my social life and party times. I had to balance the two out." For him, family time is important. That is why he likes to spend time with his family if he wants to unwind. To relax he would take a drive to the beach and enjoy ice cream. When he is not on the tracks, he also likes to play video games with his friends and watch his favourite soccer team play. Last week a 900 mm bulk sewer pipe beneath a section of Montague Drive gave way, prompting an immediate emergency response from the City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Directorate.

This marks the 13th sewer collapse in the area following 12 similar incidents in 2023 and 2024, which were previously reported by TygerBurger. The ongoing failures are widely attributed to severe corrosion from sulphuric acid and the age of the infrastructure. “City teams were deployed within minutes to cordon off the affected area, implement traffic-safety measures and begin assessing the extent of the damage,” said Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for Water and Sanitation. “We are finalising an emergency-repair plan and closely monitoring the site to mitigate any further risks, especially to the nearby Milnerton Lagoon, which remains a key environmental priority.” TygerBurger reported on the issue since August 2023 of the collapses occurring successively and at multiple points in the 50-year-old 900 mm fibre cement bulk sewer pipeline, which runs underground at a depth of 5 metres. The road was cordoned off for months, with motorists having to use alternative routes.

Charlie’s story began in heartbreak. Rescued by TEARS in June last year, the young Greyhound-Pointer-Africanis mix arrived in a state of severe neglect, says Tinka Shapiro, head of marketing and fundraising at

Ontstoke inwoner van Kuilsrivier het ernstige klagtes aan die lig gebring oor die toestand van die plaaslike begraafplaas, wat sy beskryf as “erger as ’n varkhok”. Sy woon nie ver van die begraafplaas af nie en sê die gemeenskap leef in vrees. Volgens haar is die terrein en omliggende gebied besaai met rommel wat vanaf mense se huise daarheen gebring word. Teëls word van mure afgebreek en mense gebruik die begraafplaas as slaapplek – selfs bo-op grafte.
“Daar was vroeër ’n kraan sodat besoekers water kon tap vir blomme by die grafte, maar van die mense het poedelnakend daar gestaan en hulself gewas, en die kraan oopgelos. Toe het die Stad dit verwyder,” sê sy. In een verontrustende voorval is sy aangeval toe sy ’n foto wou neem. “’n Man het oor die muur gespring, my gegryp en met my gestoei om my selfoon af te vat – dit was net twee weke oud en R10 000 werd. Vir baie is dit net nog 'n "feesmal" versiering. Sommige van ons gebruik dit as 'n verskoning om die kleinspan op Oukersaand vroeg in die bed te kry - want Kersvader gaan nie geskenke onder die boom los terwyl jy wakker is nie. Sommige, hoewel hulle Kersfees en Jesus se geboorte vier, slaan glad nie 'n Kersboom op nie, juis oor sy heidense wortels. Dit neem my terug na my kinderdae waar in die vroeë jare ons ook nie 'n Kersboom onder ons dak gehad het nie. Ons het op Kersoggend wakker geword met ons ouers wat al singend in die gang afkom. My pa met 'n lemoensak oor sy skouer waarin my en my broer se geskenke was. Hulle het dan op die voetenend van ons beddens gesit en gesels oor die ware betekenis van Kersfees terwyl ons ons nie-uitspattige Kersgeskenke oopgemaak het. Latere jare, toe een huishouding twee geword het, was daar in my ma se huis 'n Kersboom, maar nie by my pa nie. Dit was tot ek en broer een jaar so knaend geraak het dat hy 'n paar bougainvilleatakke gaan afknip en aan 'n boomstok vasgemaak het. Tot vandag toe is dit my gunsteling Kersboom ooit. Nie omdat hy teen sy waardes ingegee het op 'n tradisie waarin hy nie glo nie, maar oor die liefde waarmee dit gedoen is. Liefde, die simboliek wat ek vandag aan Kersbome heg. Dit het ook in my 'n voorliefde gekweek vir unieke Kersbome. Ek skep veel eerder my eie met klatergoud, viersierings en 'n paar stokke as wat ek 'n plastiekboom ten duurste in die winkels gaan koop. Die meer moderne Kersboom se Christelike wortels lê in Duitsland waar families dennebome op 24 Desember, die feesdag van Adam en Eva, met appels en wafels versier het. Sedert die 16de eeu word hierdie tradisie in die huise ingebring en later met kerse versier - 'n tradisie wat aan Martin Luther toegeken word - om sterre na te boots wat deur takke skyn, wat Jesus se koms na die aarde simboliseer. Hierdie tradisie het in die 1800's na Engeland versprei vanwaar dit later na die res van die wêreld uitgebrei het. Vroeë versierings het vrugte, koekies, springmieliekranse en kerse ingesluit, voor vandag se kenmerkende glasballe en elektriese liggies hul verskyning gemaak het.

Province to safeguard schools during holidays The province plans to safeguard schools during the holidays. Peter Johnson, DA spokesperson for education, said on Thursday (11 December) that the party welcomed the provincial Education Department’s allocation of over R5,2 million for this purpose. He said more than 840 incidents of crime, vandalism and theft were reported at schools across the province during the first three terms of 2025, which resulted in a repair bill exceeding R5,1 million. He said that while these figures highlighted that criminals targeted schools, with Mitchells Plain, Paarl, Manenberg, Bonteheuwel and Khayelitsha among the most affected areas, they also underscored the critical role of the police in reducing crime in these communities. The department’s evidence-based strategy included, among others; A R5,2 million holiday security budget to ensure 24-hour protection at high-risk schools; The deployment of 82 school resource officers in partnership with the City of Cape Town; Integration into the police-led Safer Festive Season Operational Plan, ensuring heightened patrols and visibility around identified hotspot schools; Activation of a whole-of-society safety network, including law enforcement, neighbourhood watches, non-government organisations and the Safe Schools Call Centre (0800 45 46 47); A partnership with Safe Schools to run a holiday programme focused on life skills, leadership and conflict management during the first week of school closures. SA’s World Supercross Grand Prix delivers thrilling finale Around 20 000 spectators gathered at the Cape Town DHL Stadium on Saturday to watch the first-ever World Supercross South African Grand Prix. The event was the final stop of the five-round FIM World Supercross series, with the world champions crowned at the end of the night. There was plenty of excitement as the world's best riders went head-to-head in three races for each class. The crowd favourite was undoubtedly the thrilling battle between Americans Jason Ander-
son and Joey Savatgy in the SX1 class. In the final race, Savatgy led early but Anderson chased relentlessly. There were a few collective gasps from the crowd as the riders swapped positions, nearly colliding. Anderson pounced in spectacular fashion to finally take the lead in the last couple of laps. ASTANDE BY DIE STAPFEES Vrydag 20 Februarie: ’n 6 km-stap om 18:00 (geskik vir die hele gesin). Saterdag 21 Februarie: Kies of jy aan die 6 km-, 12 km- of 21 km-stap wil deelneem. Die verskillende pret-stappe spring op verskillende tye weg, maar almal is vroegoggend. Sondag 16 Februarie: 10 km-stap om 07:00. Die feesterrein is weer op die grasperk langs die proelokaal, en vanjaar sal daar koffie- en kosstalletjies wees. Daar word ook bier verkoop. By die ekspo-ruimte gaan jy verlei word deur die borge, Salomon en Cape Union Mart, se nuutste toerusting. Solal bederf die stappers op ’n heerlike manier.

Wat die roetes betref is ’n paar veranderings gemaak. Die kort afstande, sowel as die Sondagroete, bly dieselfde. Op die Saterdag sal die 12 km-stappers in 2026 ’n hele nuwe roete stap, en die 25 kmroete word ingekort tot 21 km. Slegs die langste afstand, die 21 km, sal in 2026 oor Dorstberg loop. As jy nie in die omgewing woon nie, kan jy een van die kamers in die boetiekhotel op Meerendal bespreek of in een van die gastehuise in Durbanville bly. Bespreek plek in die hotel op Meerendal by dieselfde skakel waar jy inskryf. Maar jy moet spring, daar is net ’n handvol kamers beskikbaar.
