FIGURES REINFORCE CONCERNS Bellville Police Station registered 71 cases between April and June, compared with 54 during the corresponding period last year. That amounts to an increase of 31,5%. Bellville ranked 13th nationally for common robbery and sixth among Western Cape stations. The precinct also appeared among the country's top 30 stations for broader propertyrelated crime. Police recorded 313 propertyrelated crimes, the same number as during the first quarter of the previous financial year. Despite recording no year-onyear increase, Bellville ranked 14th nationally and third in the Western Cape in this category. The police classifies propertyrelated crime as burglary at residential and non-residential premises, theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles, theft out of or

from motor vehicles and stock theft. THEFT OFFENCES INCREASE Bellville also recorded an increase in the category the police describes as “all theft not mentioned elsewhere”. Cases increased from 229 to 272, a rise of 18,8%. The station ranked 12th nationally and fourth in the Western Cape for this category. Meanwhile, Bellville recorded 525 other serious crimes, up from 479 during the same period last year. That represents an increase of 9,6%, placing the station 16th nationally and second in the Western Cape. Commercial crime showed a slight improvement. TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS ellville has ranked among the country’s highest police precincts for several crime categories, with common robbery and theft-related offences increasing during the first quarter of the 2026-'27 financial year. The latest police crime statistics cover offences recorded between April and June this year. Bellville recorded 190 cases of theft out of or from motor vehicles, up from 178 during the same period last year. This represents a 6,7% increase and placed Bellville sixth nationally and third in the Western Cape for the crime category. The figures reinforce concerns around theft from vehicles in the Bellville precinct, where police have previously warned motorists against leaving valuables visible inside their cars. Common robbery recorded a sharper increase.

Animal keeping bylaw amended T

he City of Cape Town is inviting public comment on proposed amendments to its animal keeping bylaw. The changes would ban wild and exotic animals in circuses, authorise law enforcement officers to seize animals kept in contravention of the by-law, and introduce stricter regulations for working animals. During the last financial year, the City's Animal Control Unit responded to 9 499 calls, with the most falling into the following categories: Animals on the roadway (672); stray livestock (497); stray dogs (4 431); dogs off leash (107); dangerous or vicious dogs (2 839), neglect, cruelty or injury to animals (325) and information calls (628). “There is no doubt that Cape Town is a caring city as witnessed by the thousands of complaints we receive annually about animal abuse, cruelty, neglect and genuine concern,” said chairperson of the Safety and Security Portfolio Committee Mzwakhe Nqavashe. “The bylaw aims to help protect public health and safety by setting out the rules for vaccination, quarantine and the treatment of animals. It also includes the regulating of public spaces, such as animals on leashes to keep residents safe. How we treat our most vulnerable furry, and non-furry friends is a reflection of our values,” said Nqavashe. Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith said the City takes the welfare of all our residents seriously, including the four-footed, furry and feathered ones. “Acting or simply removing an animal can be a lengthy process, especially as the City is limited in when and how we can act. The amendments aim to extend our reach and strengthen our enforcement. By doing so, we are creating a better life for the many animals in the city,” said Smith. Filmmakers to apply for additional funds The City of Cape Town is inviting filmmakers to apply for support through an additional Film Fund round, with submissions open from 7 September for productions expected to be completed in the 2026/27 financial year. The additional round follows the successful launch of the third Film Fund and is aimed at filmmakers with projects nearing completion. Applications close on 7 October 2026. The fund provides financial support or municipal services support for film projects produced in Cape Town. Gang member jailed for 25 years after drug bust

TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS gang member who used a Bellville South storage facility to keep firearms, hand grenades, ammunition and more than 50 000 Mandrax tablets has been sentenced to 25 years direct imprisonment. The Bellville Regional Court sentenced Marwan Alexander after he admitted to storing and transporting contraband on behalf of the Fancy Boys and Young Fancy Boys gangs. The case followed a joint investigation by the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). Alexander was convicted on several charges, including contravening the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, possession of prohibited firearms with their serial numbers removed, unlawful possession of explosives, dealing in drugs and money laundering. Police recovered six hand grenades, 50 945 Mandrax tablets and about R1,79 million linked to unlawful activities.

STORAGE UNIT RENTED IN BELLVILLE SOUTH According to Alexander’s plea and sentencing agreement, late gang leader Marvin September approached him in May

The group planned to operate independently from the Fancy Boys and expand its operations and territory. Before his death, September instructed Alexander to find a storage facility that could not be linked to him or his family. Alexander then asked his daughter to rent a storage unit at the corner of Peter Barlow and Kasselsvlei road in Bellville South. The NPA said his daughter did not know the real reason for renting the facility or what was being stored there. Gang members later used the unit to store firearms, ammunition, explosives and drugs. Alexander admitted that he transported and stored the items knowing they would be distributed to members of the Young Fancy Boys. CCTV footage recorded before and on 3 March 2025 also showed Alexander and another person moving ammunition, explosives and drugs from a vehicle into the unit.

ARRESTED DURING OPERATION Alexander was arrested on 3 March 2025 when he arrived at the storage facility to remove firearms, ammunition, explosives and 50 945 Mandrax tablets for distribution. Police seized the items during the operation. Senior State Advocate Christian de Jongh told the court that organised gang activity remained a serious challenge for law enforcement and posed a threat to communities. He said the illegal possession and use of firearms continued to contribute to violent crime. Acting Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions Adv Adrian Mopp commended De Jongh and Hawks investigator Capt Alfred Prins for their work on the case. “Criminal gang activities pose a serious threat to public safety and undermine the rights enshrined in our Constitution,” Mopp said. “They create fear and intimidation within communities, often resulting in physical harm to law-abiding citizens.” Mopp said the investigation would continue in an effort to establish where the firearms and explosives came from and identify others who may have been involved.

Congestion grows as roadworks continue TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS Motorists travelling through parts of Bellville, Tygervalley and Durbanville face months of roadworks as congestion emerges as one of Cape Town businesses’ biggest local concerns. The City currently has road resurfacing projects under way in Welgemoed and several Durbanville suburbs, with much of the work expected to continue until November. Roadworks are taking place in areas including Welgemoed, Schoongezicht, Vierlanden, Vygeboom, Wellway Park East and Langeberg Village. Further north, motorists using

Okavango Road also face disruption at its intersection with Hennop Road. That project is scheduled to continue until 15 December. The work includes widening the road and intersection, installing and upgrading stormwater infrastructure, improving traffic signals and upgrading streetlights. The City said the improvements were required as part of development approvals in the Kraaifontein and Durbanville area and are intended to accommodate increased traffic linked to new development. The construction comes as businesses

increasingly flag traffic congestion as a major obstacle. A Business Environment Survey released by the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry on 2 September found that congestion ranked as the single biggest constraint businesses face at precinct level. The Bureau for Economic Research conducted the survey, which was analysed by Impact Economix. Among 230 respondents in the Cape Town metro, 54,8% identified traffic congestion as a serious constraint. The figure climbed to 72,7% among businesses employing more than 200 people.

Bellville recorded 389 police-detected crimes, compared with 285 a year earlier – an increase of 36,5%. Drug-related crime accounted for 300 cases, up from 256, representing a 17,2% increase. The police cautions that crimes detected as a result of police action differ from offences ordinarily reported by members of the public. These figures depend largely on law-enforcement deployments,

intelligence and the apprehension of suspects. The category includes drug-related offences, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, driving under the influence and certain sexual offences detected through police action. The report also notes that its statistics count charges rather than case dockets, meaning a single docket may contain more than one offence.

This represents a 1,8% decrease. Bellville nevertheless ranked second in the Western Cape and 21st nationally for commercial crime. POLICE-DETECTED CRIME RISES The statistics also show a significant increase in offences detected through police action.

Province to boost burns care ahead of ﬁre season With the upcoming fire season the Western Cape government said it was raising the importance of strengthening burns care and doing what it can to ensure the province’s health system is adequately prepared to respond to burnrelated injuries. Last week the government said it was preparing its health system before any increase in fires and burn injuries. The Department of Health and Wellness is also strengthening specialised services and ensuring that appropriate care is available closer to communities, the province said. The Western Cape currently has two

dedicated specialised burns services: the 18-bed paediatric C2 Burns Unit at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and the adult burns service at Tygerberg Hospital, comprising 20 low-care and six high-care/critical-care beds. During the 2025-’26 financial year these services managed 606 paediatric patients at Red Cross and 220 adult patients through Tygerberg Hospital.

he City of Cape Town has signed on to the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS), gaining access to world-leading road safety expertise and four full-time professionals embedded at the City for the next four years. The initiative links more than 30 cities worldwide in implementing evidencebased measures to cut traffic deaths and injuries. For Cape Town, the partnership arrives just as the City’s transport planning and network management team begins rolling out the recently approved Road Safety Strategy. Projects stemming from the partnership will be managed by the urban mobility directorate in close collaboration with traffic services. Mayco member for urban mobility Rob Quintas said the timing could not be better. “The launch of this exciting partnership is perfectly timed as our transport planning teams embark on the implementation of the City’s recently approved road safety strategy, which ultimately directs our efforts in making Cape Town’s roads safer and reducing the number of accidents and loss of life,” he said. The updated strategy addresses safety for pedestrians, other non-motorised road users, and passengers, especially scholars and public transport users. “We are aligned to what we know is one of the greatest drivers for the BIGRS, which is to assist cities in creating a transport system that allows people to move safely and efficiently,” Quintas said. BIGRS director of injury prevention Kelly Larson said the initiative helps cities implement a proven package of lifesaving activities, with a strong focus on

The initiative has also improved safety features in 135 car models, redesigned more than 2 400 dangerous intersections, and trained nearly 80 000 traffic police across 22 countries. The initiative implements a comprehensive package of activities proven to save lives, focusing on five key areas. This includes strengthening national legislation, enhancing data collection and surveillance, changing road-user behaviour, improving road infrastructure, and upgrading vehicle safety. Its next phase aims to save one million additional lives through 2030.The initiative includes the Bloomberg Initiative for

Cycling Infrastructure (BICI), which helps cities design streets that increase biking rates, revitalise neighbourhoods, and promote community health and well-being. Since 2022, BICI’s competitive grant programme has reached two million people across 10 cities, building over 200 miles of safe cycling facilities and preventing 8 000 crashes. It anticipates a reduction of 97 000 tons of CO2 emissions by 2040. For Cape Town, the partnership will bring technical assistance and training from experts in the world’s leading road safety organisations, benefiting the City’s Transport Planning and Network Management team as they implement the recently approved Road Safety Strategy. Carpenter selected for competition F

rom rekindling an old hobby from his childhood during the Covid-19 pandemic, a woodworker from Durbanville has just been selected to participate in the prestigious Rubio Monocoat Heritage Build-Off Auction 2026. The work of 12 talented woodworkers has been selected in a nationwide competition that celebrates creativity and craftsmanship while supporting an important cause. All the work will be auctioned from 1 to 30 September — all proceeds in aid of the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa). Morris Knudsen from D’Urbanvale worked as operations manager at a local church in Durbanville for 11 years when the pandemic struck. With only online church services for almost a year and him being at home most of the time, Knudsen was trusting for the next chapter for him and his wife, Franita, known as Fran by family and friends. He was challenged by friends and family to start designing his own furniture. He also presented classes for children and adults in woodwork at some stage. CUSTOMISED FURNITURE “We had just moved into our renovated home before covid, and I had the opportunity to build my dream workshop. It was just an amazing time in that I was able to set everything up. I was approached by friends in interior decoration, who asked me for my help to make customised furniture for clients, as all the factories were closed during that time. I took on the challenge and then got the opportunity to also manufacture furniture for their next project. I could not resist the call to a new adventure and so

The Makers Shed was born. “I have been fascinated with making things from a very young age. As a child I was brought up on a farm and our family business was furniture manufacturing, restorations and refurbishment. “With access to a wonderland of equipment, a father who never said no and great mentors who came across my path, I would spend every spare moment honing my skills and making new things. This fascination and love of making things always stayed with me during the many paths I followed in my life journey. “In a world consumed by mass production, there is something so gratifying in the slow and meticulous process of creating a unique piece from start to finish with our clients,” he says. DESIGNING OWN PIECES Encouraged by family and friends, Knudsen also started to design his own pieces. The first was a chair he worked on with a client for six months. He named the chair “The Hanlie” after her “for her grace to allow me the freedom to design the chair and the patience to wait during the process of getting it right”. “I am thankful that my passion is my work. I also have a passion for teaching and hope to get classes for children and adults up and running again. My trade is a dying one,” he says. I love the warmth, character and old-world charm of this beautiful timber — particularly when it is used to create fresh, modern designs. Teachers targeted in fresh scam New, unemployed and substitute teachers in the Western Cape are again being targeted by a scam that promises permanent posts and demands payment for fake appointment letters. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) first flagged the scheme in December 2025 and says several schools have now reported fresh incidents, according to WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond. “WhatsApp messages sent to teachers. These messages typically claim to be from a district official or school principal and state that a permanent post has become available at a particular school, with the recipient identified as the preferred candidate.

The WhatsApp message may even include the name and photograph of the relevant principal or official to make the communication appear authentic. The message then instructs the teacher to report to a school with specific documentation or contact a WCED official using the scammers contact details,” says Hammond. Critically, it concludes with a request for a “once-off fee”, usually to the amount of approximately R2 800, allegedly required for the “authorisation of an appointment letter” at district offices, accompanied by banking details. “Regrettably, some teachers have fallen victim to this scam, arriving at schools having paid the so-called authorisation

fee, only to discover that no such post exists. This deception has caused significant distress to the affected individuals and has the potential to damage the reputations of schools, principals, and district officials who are being impersonated.” Affected individuals are urged to report incidents to the police. The department stresses that permanent teaching posts are advertised only through its Directorate: Recruitment and Selection, and that the WCED including head office, district offices and schools, will never ask for payment for job applications or appointments. The official platform for advertising and applying for posts is the online E-Recruitment System.

FUNERAL UNDERTAKERS AND PUBLIC AWARENESS The City relies on funeral undertakers as delivery partners, but says inconsistent registration, compliance and payment practices create administrative and operational problems. Residents are not always aware of the options and costs available to them. The policy notes that a lack of awareness about alternatives such as cremation, shared graves and vertical burials puts further strain on cemetery space. ALTERNATIVE BURIAL OPTIONS The draft policy encourages spacesaving alternatives, subject to legal and environmental approvals. These include green burials, which use environmentally friendly methods, vertical burials, reduction burials where graves can be reused after a minimum of 10 years with family consent, cremation, niche walls for storing cremated remains, and scattering gardens. The City also supports pilot projects to test new burial methods and service models. Community engagement is required before any wider roll-out. The City may audit cemetery grounds that have been unused for 20 years to assess whether they can be reused or closed. The public must be given at least 60 days' notice before any closure or reuse, and existing burial rights must be honoured. A key focus of the draft policy is supporting access for vulnerable residents to dignified burial or cremation services when they cannot afford funeral costs.

CITY URGES RESIDENTS TO COMMENT Councillor Francine Higham, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, said: “Death and memorialisation are deeply personal. They are tied to faith, family traditions, culture and finances, which is why the City cannot finalise this policy without hearing from residents and stakeholders.” “This draft policy is about dignity, clarity and care. It looks at how we manage limited cemetery space, how we support vulnerable families, how we protect cemetery spaces, and how we make sure residents understand the options available to them,” she said. “I encourage residents, community organisations, faith leaders, funeral undertakers and all interested stakeholders to read the draft policy and share their comments. Every submission will help us shape a policy that honours our loved ones with dignity and supports the families they leave behind.” ONGOING REVIEW The policy will be reviewed at least every five years, or sooner if needed due to changes in legislation, public health, operations, finances or the environment. CITY-ASSISTED BURIALS AND CREMATIONS To qualify for a City-assisted burial or cremation, the deceased must have had no income above the state pension threshold, no insurance or estate, and no next of kin or person able to pay. The City provides a standard package, including transport of remains, a biodegradable coffin or appropriate container for cremation, and a public grave or cremation. No memorial work is permitted on City-assisted graves and no exclusive burial rights are granted. The City's 2015 policy on burial or cremation of destitute persons has been incorporated into the new draft and will be withdrawn once the new policy is approved.

Boost for crime response

ape Town's new policing nerve centre in Goodwood is nearing completion, with the City of Cape Town promising expanded real-time coordination and a stronger partnership with police in the fight against crime. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis visited the new 8 000m² Joint Public Safety Operations Centre on Monday last week, accompanied by JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security. The digital nerve centre will integrate all City policing resources and safety technologies already deployed throughout the metro, the City said. OFFICERS EXPANDED AND TECHNOLOGY RAMPED UP Hill-Lewis said the City had grown its policing personnel by 1 300 officers in this term of office, bringing the total to over 3 800, while investing in cutting-edge safety technologies and digital coordination. "I was excited to see progress on our new policing nerve centre, which is almost ready to roll as the major new coordination hub for City policing and safety technology. This is the next big step forward in making Cape Town safer for everyone," he said. Hill-Lewis said the new operations centre would coordinate expanded policing efforts, making the City an even stronger partner to the police. "This new centre is also further evidence that our City policing services are ready and able for expanded powers, especially to investigate gang, gun and drug crime. We must make full use of all policing resources in Cape Town to bring a positive change for communities living in daily fear of violent crime," said Hill-Lewis. TECHNOLOGIES TO BE INTEGRATED The centre will integrate a range of existing and emerging policing technologies, including: Drones operated through the City's Aviation Unit and third-party service providers; Body-Worn Cameras, In-Vehicle

The Metro Police Strategic Surveillance Unit detected 41 005 incidents via CCTV in 2025-'26, resulting in 541 arrests — an 18% increase on the year before.

REAL-TIME OPERATIONAL PICTURE Smith said the various safety technology solutions introduced helped create a real-time operational picture to improve situational awareness and inform decisionmaking. "We are now at a point where officers can stream live feeds to our operations centre from their mobile cameras, augmented by drone, automatic number plate recognition and CCTV footage. I am excited to see how we can keep building on this to advance public safety into the future," he said. He added that the City was heartened by a 35% increase in police requests to view its footage as a potential investigative resource. "As we work to expand our digital coordination and safety technology network, the potential evidentiary benefits increase the chances of successful prosecutions," said Smith.

Don’t just jump on the party bus this election Before backing a party in the local government elections, voters should ask three questions about its ideas: Does it make historical sense? Does it make political sense? Does it make moral sense? As young South Africans, how often do we stop to ask where the ideas we support come from? Can they actually work? And if they do, are they right? Or do we simply ask whether they sound good or speak to our frustrations? This makes me think about a bus. If I were standing at a bus stop, I would want to know where the bus was going. But the destination would not be enough. I would want to know who was driving, which route we were taking, and whether the bus had made the journey before. Politics is not so different. As South Africa moves towards the 2026 local government elections, political parties will offer different destinations: better services, more jobs, economic freedom, safer communities. But a destination on a sign does not tell us everything about the journey. This matters because political identities can be inherited long before political beliefs are properly examined. We may support a party because our parents do, or reject one because of what we have experienced. But at some point, we have to ask: what do I actually believe? Does it make historical sense? South African politics cannot be separated from our history. Colonialism and apartheid shaped who held power, who owned land, who had access to education and where people could live. That history still inﬂuences how many vote. For many South Africans, the ANC’s history as a liberation movement remains important. For others, its record in government carries more weight. The EFF has found support among voters frustrated by inequality

and land ownership, while the DA has built its identity around liberal democracy and effective government. The Patriotic Alliance has gained support around crime, migration and political representation. These parties offer different answers to what South Africa should become. Understanding where those ideas come from does not mean agreeing with them, but we cannot understand the road ahead if we refuse to look at the road behind us. Does it make political sense? Can it work? A party can promise jobs – how will those jobs be created? It can promise housing – where will the money and land come from? It can promise redistribution – how will wealth continue to be created? A slogan is not a plan. A promise is not a guarantee. Local government makes this particularly clear. Politics is visible in our daily lives: whether bins are collected, lights stay on, water reaches our homes and roads are maintained. These involve choices about money, priorities and responsibility. Parties should be judged by what they say and what they do with power. The DA has governed the Western Cape since 2009 and Cape Town since 2006, so its record can be measured against its promises. The same standard must apply to every party. No party should receive a free pass. Does it make moral sense? Even if it works, is it right? A policy can be effective and still cause harm. A government can deliver economic growth while leaving people behind. Politics is not only about what we want to achieve but also about what we are willing to do to other people to achieve it. Perhaps we spend too much time deciding what we are against and not enough time deciding what we are for. “Anyone but them” is not a political philosophy. As young South Africans, we have an opportunity to develop political beliefs of our own rather than simply inherit them. If I believe in accountability, I should demand it from the party I support. If I believe in human dignity, that principle should not change depending on who is affected. And if I change my mind after learning something new, that does not make me disloyal. Before we get on the political bus, we should ask more questions. We may never know exactly where the journey will end. What we need is more accountability With reference to the letter, "Static response is disingenuous" in TygerBurger on 2 September, I completely disagree. Firstly, whether you're driving uphill or downhill, the speed limit does not change. You as a driver are responsible to stick to it. And if you get caught speeding, be it uphill or downhill, take responsibility and just pay the ﬁne. From experience, it's the guys who got caught with their hands in the cookie jar that are ﬁrst to complain. And yes, it's easy to complain hiding behind your anonymity. Secondly, just because you don't see it does not mean it doesn't happen. The city is big and there are only so many traffic officials. What we really need is

more accountability from motorists, whether you drive a taxi, car, bus or truck. Yes, maybe traffic services can do more, but they can't be everywhere at once. The reality I witness day after day is that your average motorist has just as much disregard for the rules of the road as some taxi drivers — yellow-lane passing, skipping stop streets, jumping red lights, passing over solid white lines, and driving against oncoming traffic. And that's despite passing various traffic services vehicles in my daily commute. For instance, this morning I passed ﬁve — two provincial and three City of Cape Town vehicles. Of these, two were clearly out on visibility patrols — one in the process of pulling a bakkie over on the N1 — and the others were dealing

with infringements next to the road, of which one was a taxi. Motorists behave when they see traffic officials, but as soon as they're out of sight, the bad behaviour returns. What you refer to as "static response" is also necessary. The officials don't just pick a spot they think will be easy money; they put their cameras in spots where there are regular complaints. To this I can attest, living in a neighbourhood bordering a busy through road where speeding is a huge problem and residents regularly complain. The same goes for them popping up at the stop street in a quiet neighbourhood; it's usually a response to regular complaints. Esther, DURBANVILLE

Staatsgeboue kan beter gebruik word Dit is tyd dat belastingbetalers en kiesers se oë oopgaan oor hoe staatsgeboue bedryf word, want hulle betaal vir die foute en wanbestuur. Alle staatsondernemings is – veral sedert 1994 – tot in die grond afgebreek, en nou ook Sassa. Korrupsie vier steeds hoogty – selfs ná Zuma. Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa het in 32 jaar in die regering nog geen “kollegas” verklap wat korrup is nie. Onder hierdie wanbestuur tel ook staatsgrond en -geboue. In Bellville staan die sentrale Sanral-gebou, wat nog nooit gebruik is nie; in Voortrekkerweg by die binnelandse-sake-kantoor staan mense rondom baie blokke terwyl die een in Tygervallei net leë stoele genereer as gevolg van ’n lomp besprekingstelsel.

Hope staatsgrond kan beter benut word deur dit vir ontwikkeling deur private maatskappye te verkoop. Die massiewe Transnet-Bellville-rangeerwerf het feitlik geen waarde meer behalwe as dit verkoop word vir ’n bekostigbare behuisingsdorpie met woonstelle, ’n opvoedingsentrum, handwerkfabriek en trimpark nie. Ander voorbeelde vir ontwikkeling is die Soutrivier-rangeerwerf, Akasiapark, Wingﬁeld en Youngsﬁeld. Almal kan geld inbring vir die staat en in behoeftes voorsien. Cattle in suburbia are a problem As a municipal taxpayer and senior citizen of Kuils River I'm very upset that cattle, goats and sheep are grazing freely on ﬁelds, pavements, private property and crossing the main road in search of further grazing while one herdsman attempts to control up to 70 animals at a time. My car was bumped by a cow in Mitchell street recently when cattle moved across the main road. No response from the police, metro police, or Kuils River municipality, although Cape Town emergency services advised that the matter would be attended

to. The stench of the animal dung and manure causes flies, blue flies and gnats entering houses. Living less than 100 meters from the canal, my wife can’t open the backdoor as the insects swarm in especially when preparing food. This couldn't-care-less attitude is not acceptable. Volgens Safra Free Reed Mzansi, ’n organisasie sonder winsoogmerk, wat die geleentheid aanbied en ook as die Suid-Afrikaanse Vryrietinstrumentvereniging bekend staan, bring dié konsert toonaangewende trekklavier-, konsertina- en mondﬂuitjiespelers, ensembles, dansers en gasmusikante uit die Wes-Kaap, Noord-Kaap, Gauteng, KwaZuluNatal en Lesotho byeen. Ballet and art unite in Tokai Cape Town City Ballet and Norval Foundation to present Velvet Feathers, an intimate production set against the art, architecture and landscapes of the Norval Foundation Art Museum in Tokai on Saturday 26 September at 12:30 and 18:00. The call is out for 1 400 voices to join Cape Town’s celebration of World Singing Day on Saturday 17 October at Groote Kerk, Adderley Street. Hosted by The Heartsong Collective, a local non-proﬁt community choir, and Uthando South Africa, the event will feature guest appearances by Vicky Sampson and Khayelitsha-based singer/songwriter Mohau Moahloli. The audience becomes the choir at the event, which runs from 18:30 to 21:00. Lyrics will be provided so that everyone can take part, regardless of musical background or singing experience. VROUERUGBYSPAN WEN COSACSA-TOERNOOI

Northlink wen groot TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS orthlink College se vrouerugbyspan het Sondag (6 September) die Wes-Kaapse rugbytoernooi van College Sport, Arts and Culture South Africa (Cosacsa) by die Hoërskool President in Goodwood gewen. Die tweedaagse kompetisie, wat op 5 en 6 September plaasgevind het, het Northlink College, Boland College, West Coast College, False Bay TVET College, South Cape TVET College en die College of Cape Town bymekaar gebring. Northlink se vroue het al drie hul wedstryde gewen en met nege punte bo-aan die puntelys geëindig. Boland College was tweede en West Coast College derde.

WEN AL DRIE HUL WEDSTRYDE In die mansafdeling het West Coast College die eerste plek ingeneem, gevolg deur Boland College in die tweede plek en Northlink College derde. Die toernooi het ook as ’n keuringsgeleentheid gedien om spelers vir ’n Wes-Kaapse span, wat die provinsie by die nasionale Cosacsa-kompetisie sal verteenwoordig, te identifiseer. Cosacsa skep geleenthede vir studente in die TVET-sektor om op sport-, kuns- en kultuurgebied mee te ding. Met goud vir die vrouespan en brons vir die mansspan het Northlink die rugby-naweek met twee podiumplekke afgesluit.

University athletes compete

A group of athletes who are part of the University of the Western Cape Athletics Club competed at the 2026 ASA National Cross Country Championships in Pretoria this past weekend. The championships took place at Curro Northlink College se Hazeldean High School on Saturday vrouerugbyspan tydens 5 September. The athletes were Abby die Western Cape Wylbach, Keeran Adams, Sezario Tafel, CoSACSA-rugbytoernooi Cameron De Beer, Carlia Moses, Sergio by President High School Plaatjies and Jandré Franke. in Goodwood. opportunities to train and compete. Van Der Ventel said he became involved after noticing the lack of an athletics club in the area. He started working with local primary schools and saw how much pressure was placed on teachers who often had to oversee several sporting codes. His work with the athletes is aimed at giving them more structured support and regular competition experience. Their participation in the national championships gave the group another opportunity to compete against athletes from across the country and continue developing within the sport.
