Cape Town residents stepped up to support a meaningful cause on Saturday 25 October, as the city hosted its first World Homeless Day Fun Walk, bringing awareness to homelessness while fostering community spirit
The event, organised by nonprofit organisation Mould Empower Serve (MES) in partnership with Bellville Athletic Club, drew participants together for more than just exercise The 2,5-kilometer walk served as a platform to raise awareness about homelessness in South Africa and promote the importance of responsible giving
HOMELESSNESS AWARENESS TAKES CENTRE STAGE
BUILDINGBRIDGESTHROUGHACTION
Following the walk, participants gathered for a traditional Boerewors braai and engaged in open discussions designed to foster connection, reflection, and deeper understanding of homelessness issues affecting local communities
The collaborative atmosphere encouraged meaningful conversations about how residents can make a positive impact
"This isn't just about walking," explains MES’s Lunar Magidigidi
"It's about creating a space where our community can come together, learn, and find ways to support those who need it most "
PARTOFALARGERMOVEMENT
The Cape Town event was part of MES's broader initiative, with similar fun walks taking place in other South African cities including Gqeberha and Kempton Park
This coordinated effort demonstrates a growing national awareness and commitment to addressing homelessness through community engagement
The World Homeless Day Fun Walk represents a shift toward more thoughtful, community-driven approaches to social challenges By combining physical activity with education and discussion, the event created an accessible way for Cape Town residents to engage with important social issues while building connections with their neighbours
The success of this inaugural Cape Town event suggests that residents are eager for meaningful ways to contribute to their community's wellbeing, setting a positive precedent for future awareness initiatives

After more than six decades of serving the northern suburbs community, the iconic M-KEM 24 Hour Pharmacy in Bellville is embarking on an exciting new chapter as UniCare 24/7 Trusted Health, while maintaining its commitment to providing uninterrupted health-care services to local families.
The transition, announced by founder Hylton Mallach, fondly known as Mr M, comes as part of M-KEM’s partnership with Clicks Holdings, established in 2023 For Bellville residents who have relied on the pharmacy’s roundthe-clock services for generations the change represents continuity rather than disruption
“When I first opened the doors of M-KEM in 1964 my dream was simple, to create a pharmacy that puts people first,” reflected Mallach, whose vision has served countless northern suburbs families through medical emergencies, late-night needs and everyday health-care requirements
He no longer serves as the owner of M-KEM as the Clicks Group has been the owner since 2023
The pharmacy made history in the Western Cape when it pioneered 24-hour pharmaceutical services “In 1999 M-KEM became one of the first pharmacies in South Africa to be open 24 hours a day, ensuring care was always available, day or night,” Mallach noted, a service that has
M-KEM IS NOW PART OF CLICKS HOLDINGS
become essential for Bellville and surrounding communities
COMMUNITYCORNERSTONE REMAINSUNCHANGED
For loyal customers concerned about changes to their trusted healthcare provider, Mallach offered reassurance: “What does this mean for me as a customer?
The answer is simple: everything you love about M-KEM stays exactly the same ”
The familiar faces behind the counter, the specialised clinics and the gold-standard service that has made M-KEM a community institution will continue unabated
The pharmacy’s location in Bellville remains the same as is the round-the-clock availability that has made it a lifeline for emergency medications and urgent healthcare needs continues without interruption
“Today I am honoured to share some exciting news about our future
“In 2023, M-KEM proudly became part of Clicks Holdings, and with this partnership comes the opportunity to take the very best of M-KEM and expand it further than ever before,”
Mallach explained
The rebranding to UniCare 24/7 Trusted Health represents more than just a name change; it signals the recognition of a
uniquely successful community pharmacy model that is now set to benefit other South African communities
The M-KEM approach, characterised by treating health care as personal rather than transactional, has proven so successful in Bellville that it will now serve as the template for a new network of communityfocused pharmacies nationwide
“This transition is not an ending,” Mallach emphasised, "but the continuation of a legacy, one that I am personally proud to endorse "
LOOKINGAHEADWHILE HONOURINGTHEPAST
As Bellville prepares to welcome the UniCare era the community can take pride in knowing its local pharmacy is the gold standard for community health care in South Africa
The model of care developed in the northern suburbs will now extend its reach to help other communities across the country
For Bellville residents the message is clear: while the name above the door may change the community-centred care that has defined M-KEM for 60 years continues stronger than ever under the UniCare banner
The pharmacy continues to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at its familiar Bellville location, ensuring the northern suburbs community never goes without essential health-care services
M-KEM founder Hylton Mallach’s 1964 vision of community-first healthcare continues as the Bellville pharmacy transitions to UniCare 24/7 under the ownership of Clicks Holdings

Kommentaar // Comments
BULL FLUGTAG SOARS AGAIN: Fun,laughter and high-flying excitement filled the air
Embrace analog to balance digital life
Regarding the letter published on 29 October, it appears that the world has moved from physical childhood slavery to mental childhood slavery Meditation tai chi hiking many sports and activities away from computers help solve this problem I am a software developer with 40 years experience I hike I meditate I do tai chi I wear a 40-year-old watch that doesn’t count steps or tell me things I really don’t need to know On my bike, I don t use a headset or bluetooth
I don’t play computer games There are loads of great board games and there is my favourite activity, being able to have an old fashioned discussion without resorting to Google to check things I asked an electrical engineer friend a question the other day He said have you asked Google? I then emailed my
question to an electrical engineering professor I know, who I studied with in 1982, and he referred me to an electronic engineer who can solve the problem
We need to have digital and analog worlds I still have an old motorcycle with an analog speedometer I dislike these new digital speedometers which my car has, and which give one zero “distance”, zero reference point I live in Milnerton If people can get groups of 10 or more people (scholars included) together, I am willing to run weekly meditation and tai chi classes
People can email me (david@mypowerstation biz) WhatsApp notifications are switched off on my phone as they distract me too much
My personal view is that these activities increase people s brain power and ability to do more and stay
Weekend events gridlock city
I think it s time to say to the City administration: Wat genoeg is, is genoeg!
There is hardly a weekend going by without some or other huge event Now we just had this "Classic Motor Race” on an extremely busy Kgosana Drive It’s been poorly planned and seriously inconvenienced probably 100 000 residents who use the affected routes to travel between work and home daily The City no doubt made millions, but won't compensate even one of the affected citizens who’s travelling time will have been longer, using more fuel or paying more for taxi fare
If it’s not a marathon, it’s a huge football game in the stadium when thousands come in their cars gridlocking the city centre for hours (Sunday 5 October) I don’t know what the authorities did during the Western Cape in 2010, I wasn’t here, but I read about parking facilities to the east of the city centre and shuttle buses If then, why not now ?
Film crews hanging around everywhere blocking some roads even during the week or there is a fun walk, or the Cape Town Carnival, or beach Pro Volleyball in Camps Bay, as if that suburb isn’t congested enough It’s become almost impossible for large
coaches to drive along Victoria road any time on any day
The cruise ship season is here again when up to a dozen coaches depart from the cruise terminal on the days a ship is docked Driving up and down Kloof Nek road is a nightmare for the drivers, while turning into it coming from the cable way station in Tafelberg road is a lesson in extreme patience
Not to forget about the CTICC, hosting thousands of conference participants regularly, causing traffic along the adjacent roads to creep along at best Cape Town’s traffic control is totally out of sync at any time in the week, the City administration is out of touch with reality and staging such huge events is pleasuring relatively few yet causing thousands of the rate paying citizens much disruption
The time is long overdue when the number of huge events must be kept to a minimum, such as the traditional ones, Tweede Nuwejaar, the Two Oceans and the Argus
Additional ones should be limited to a maximum of maybe one a month, not like now when we have almost one every weekend
PETERSMULIK,Rugby
ahead of automation which started in 1760 with the first industrial revolution Imagine being able to work with and absorb and do two to 40 times more than you do now Imagine the ability to instantly recall things you learned years or decades ago Imagine learning techniques that allow you to remember things you think you have forgotten All possible Our brains are individually more powerful than every computer on the planet But do we have the user manual to use them efficiently and effectively? Meditation tai chi and other activities help to develop our brains and help to develop our intuition Intuition is knowing things we were never taught I use my intuition to find possible answers which I always research and check

‘Not a mistake’
Your article “Milnerton High parent pleads for mercy on family (TygerBurger 29 October) refers
Where was the “mercy” for the victim of your son’s bullying behaviour?
This is not some alleged activity It was captured on video for all to see!
And to dismiss deliberate behaviour as a “mistake” is ludicrous
A mistake is when you add 2 + 2 and get 5
This deliberate behaviour caused both physical and emotional harm the victim will live with for the rest of his life
While you are scared to leave your house, imagine the horror endured by the victim having to go to school every day and having to face your son's assault, physical or verbal
This is not about you
It’s about the victim, so deal with it like the victim had to deal with being beaten by a gang of cowards and thugs
What will they be getting up to once they leave school?
Jail time is the only appropriate punishment

Glans Of, as jy verkies, ‘n bordjie verouderde cheddar en ‘n stukkie donker sjokolade

i) The valuation of the capital asset to be transferred or disposed and the method of valuation used to determine that valuation: The City’s Professional Valuers conducted a desktop valuation of the subject property on 30 January 2025, where it was estimated that the highest and best fair market value of the subject property is in the order of R55
(excluding VAT)
ii) Reasons for the proposed transfer and disposal of the asset: The proposed transfer or disposal of the site serves both an urban mobility objective as well as an economic growth imperative Based on the information provided by the Urban Mobility Directorate it has been confirmed that the targeted portion of the asset to be disposed of or transferred is the preferred location for a permanent long-distance bus terminus to serve the greater Bellville area. It has also been confirmed that this portion of the asset is underutilized and will not be required for the municipality’s own use at a later date since Recreation & Parks Department cannot use this portion for cemetery purposes
iii) Any expected benefits to the Municipality that may result from the transfer or sale
• The proposal for a mixed-use LDBT will facilitate more efficient use of the capital asset by maximizing the land use potential and intensity of the site according to highest and best use, while also be catalyzing further economic growth targeting the long-distance passenger transport sector Given Cape Town s geographical location, it is of vital importance to improve transport connectivity with the rest of Southern Africa. The objective of supporting safe and affordable domestic and international travel directly contributes to economic growth by enabling people to travel and access a wider range of opportunities such as jobs education and essential services thereby realizing the IDP objective 1 to increase jobs and investment in the Cape Town Economy
• The potential release of this site responds to IDP Programme 1 5 – The consolidated land pipeline and release programme whereby high-impact and high value land is identified and leveraged to support economic growth and job creation This is facilitated by accelerated land release of these parcels of land to test the market for a variety of mixed-use development opportunities over the next 2-10 years. The site has been valued as a high value capital asset and thus fits the profile for inclusion in this programme
• The proposed transfer of the site for a mixed-use LDBT contributes to Cape Town s regional economic infrastructure demands and facilitates the spatial transformation and integration of the city s urban structure according to the spatial vision of the 2023 MSDF and District Spatial Development Frameworks
iv) Any expected proceeds to be received by the Municipality resulting from the transfer or disposal:
The City could expect to receive a fair market value in exchange for the transfer of the capital asset with an accompanying basket of rights to allow for the development of a long-distance bus terminus and supportive mixed-use development
v) Any expected gain or loss that will be realised or incurred by the Municipality arising from the transfer or disposal: The opportunity cost of not leveraging this under-utilised strategic asset will result in long-term losses to the City of Cape Town due to land sales and on-going rates revenue foregone The City stands to gain substantial infrastructure upgrades through the payment of development charges if the development proceeds and on-going utility sales to the end users of the development The normal costs related to advertisements will be incurred by Council The purchaser will be responsible for the professional fees and development costs of the capital asset

• Revenue generation potential – In a context of dwindling financial resources, it is imperative that the City maximises all available opportunities to promote fiscal sustainability in order to deliver services and infrastructure to Capetonians.
