llegal structures around the Bellville station precinct are under scrutiny amid allegations that criminal activity linked to the unlawful occupation is spilling into surrounding areas, including the Tienie Meyer Bypass. Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District (VRCID) Chief Operations Officer Derek Bock described the area below the South Street bridge as a crime hotspot. “We know from our field workers, from the VRCID social field workers, that a lot of criminals live in those illegal structures,” Bock said. He said the VRCID believes some of the crime experienced in the area emanates from structures erected on land belonging to the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa). The allegations have not been independently verified. Bock called on Prasa to pursue the necessary legal process to address the occupation, saying the situation could also hamper efforts to attract investment into Bellville. Yaseen Gaffar of DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette took top honours, winning the Government Reporting category, in this instance municipal and local, a fitting recognition for sustained engagement with local-government issues. Women in DIY awards seek makers and renovators South Africa’s women renovators, makers, upcyclers and community changemakers are invited to enter the third annual Women in DIY Excellence Awards, with entries now open for this year. The awards, hosted by Brights Hardware, recognise women whose DIY projects, renovations, sustainability initiatives and community work are making an impact across the country. eer as 100 gesinne wat in die Hardekraaltjie-woonwapark in Bellville woon, word deur ’n onsekere toekoms in die gesig gestaar nadat die Stad Kaapstad bevestig het ’n sportfasiliteit gaan op die eiendom ontwikkel word. Die grond is formeel vir dié doel aangewys en die beplanningsproses het reeds begin. Inwoners wat steeds in die park woon, sê egter hulle het nêrens om heen te gaan nie. Volgens Miranda van Wyk, ‘n inwoner en hul woordvoeder, is daar tans na raming tussen 101 en 104 gesinne in die park. Sommige woon reeds tot 10 jaar

daar. “Baie van hulle is bejaard of het mediese probleme. Baie woon hier omdat hulle naby hospitale is,” sê Van Wyk. “As hierdie park gesluit word, gaan baie mense op straat sit.” Van Wyk woon al byna twee jaar saam met haar man en twee pleegkinders in die woonwapark. Haar man het sowat drie jaar gelede ’n beroerte gehad en kan nie werk nie. Sy is gevolglik die gesin se enigste broodwinner. Volgens haar bevind verskeie ander huishoudings hulle in soortgelyke finansiële en gesondheidsomstandighede, terwyl sommige inwoners slegs van hul pensioen afhanklik is.

“Verblyf is baie duur, so hierdie mense maak staat op dié verblyf. Hulle het nêrens anders om heen te gaan nie. Ek bedoel, waarheen gaan hulle?” Die ligging is veral belangrik vir mense wat gereeld mediese behandeling benodig. Van Wyk sê sommige inwoners ontvang behandeling by die Tygerberg-hospitaal, terwyl kinders, bejaardes en mense in rolstoele ook deel van die gemeenskap is. “Dit is ’n ideale plek; dit is naby winkels en hospitale. Almal is min of meer hier gevestig.” STAD VOLG REGSPROSES Luthando Tyhalibongo, woordvoerder van die Stad, sê die eiendom word tans onregmatig beset en die Stad volg die toepaslike regsproses. Kennisgewings om die perseel te ontruim, is deur die Stad se prokureurs aan inwoners beteken. Die tydperk wat aan hulle toegestaan is, het op 26 Julie verstryk. “Die voortgesette onregmatige besetting van die eiendom belemmer tans die Stad se vermoë om met die voorgestelde ontwikkeling voort te gaan,” sê Tyhalibongo. Hy sê die Stad het oor ’n tydperk met die inwoners kontak gemaak en sy standpunt oor die besetting en gepaardgaande regsproses gekommunikeer.

Van Wyk bevestig dat inwoners kennisgewings ontvang het, maar sê hulle kan nie bloot vertrek sonder bekostigbare alternatiewe verblyf nie. “Hulle wil ons hier uit hê, maar waarheen moet ons gaan?” Sy sê inwoners sal die uitsettingsproses teenstaan. “Ons moet ’n plek hê om heen te gaan. Hier is baie gesinne met kinders, bejaardes en mense in rolstoele. Waarheen moet hulle gaan?” GEMEENSKAP HOU PARK IN STAND Te midde van die onsekerheid sê Van Wyk inwoners gaan voort om self na die terrein om te sien. Hulle maak gemeenskaplike gebiede skoon, werk in die tuine en dra by tot instandhoudingskoste wanneer probleme ontstaan. “As die dreine verstop, betaal ons self om dit oop te maak,” sê sy. “Ons is ’n baie hegte gemeenskap. Ons kyk na die park en ons kyk na die terrein.” ’n Klein bestuursgroep help ook inwoners wat swaarkry met kos en ander ondersteuning. Van Wyk het intussen ’n veldtog op sosiale media begin om skenkings van kos, klere en ander benodigdhede in te samel. ERFENIS OOK ONDER DIE LOEP Die toekoms van Hardekraaltjie het ook aandag getrek weens die terrein se geskiedenis en ’n gemeenskapsveldtog om dit en die volwasse bome daar te bewaar.

TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS Motorists parking around Tygervalley and Willowbridge and commuters travelling through the Bellville CBD are being urged to keep up their guard as police ﬂag two crime concerns in the area. Theft from vehicles has become a concern in parking areas near Virgin Active, especially during the afternoon. Meanwhile, robberies along the busy route between the Bellville taxi rank and train station during morning and evening commuting periods. Sgt Charles Neelse, spokesperson for Bellville police, described theft out of motor vehicles as one of the station’s biggest concerns over the past week. According to Neelse, the vehicle-related incidents generally occur in the afternoon. Police are again urging motorists not to leave valuables in their vehicles, even when stopping for a short period and drivers should check that doors are locked before walking away and keep bags, laptops, cellphones and other valuables out of sight. In the Bellville CBD, there are concerns about robberies between the taxi rank and train station. Neelse said incidents tend to coincide with the times commuters are heading to work or returning home. “It will normally happen when people go to work and when they return back from work,” he said. The early morning and early evening are therefore periods when commuters should be alert. Those walking through the area are encouraged to keep valuables out of sight and remain aware of what is happening around them. Police are appealing to residents to report criminal or suspicious activity rather than ignore it.

That is Prasa land,” she said. Kleinsmith said the fenced property containing The Haven belongs to the City. She said the vacant facility had already been stripped of electrical wiring and other materials, prompting concerns about safety and possible occupation. “Before people start moving into the place, which has been stripped already of wires and a lot of things, before anybody gets hurt, or people move into it, the decision was taken to demolish the building and clean that space up,” Kleinsmith said. QUESTIONS OVER FUTURE OF HAVEN SITE Bock said the demolition raised

questions about how the City-owned property would be secured afterwards. “Are they going to fence it in? Who's going to ensure that, once the structure is not there anymore, the City is going to ensure that that open piece of land will not be invaded by illegal structures, as is currently the case around that Haven facility?” he asked. The closure also means the loss of approximately 60 shelter beds in Bellville, according to Bock. He said those spaces had previously provided an option for people wanting to move off the streets. The VRCID believes dealing with conditions around the station is important to the City's plans to revitalise Bellville as a business node. TygerBurger has sent questions to Prasa about the occupation of its land, the allegations of criminal activity and whether legal proceedings are under way. tudents at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) say the continued disruption at its Bellville campus is taking a financial and academic toll as uncertainty remains over the resumption of classes. The university evacuated residences and suspended activities following protests, a campus fire and unrest over its proposed financial recovery plan. Two students who spoke to TygerBurger asked not to be named. A third-year student said the proposed financial requirements had added to the uncertainty facing students and their families. “All I know is that they want us to pay R7 000 plus 30% of our debt, which is wrong. We come from different families with different backgrounds. It was hard to come this side,” she said. “Our parents have to go through debt so that we can come this side and they want us to pay R7 000 plus the 30%. It’s not fair.” She said students did not know where they would find the additional money. “We don’t know where we’re going to get this R7 000. It’s so hard for us.”

DISRUPTION BEYOND CAMPUS RESIDENCES A first-year student, who also asked not to be named, said the disruption was affecting students living in private accommodation differently. She was not required to leave her accommodation, but said the suspension of classes and university shuttle services had created other problems. “The only thing that’s affecting us is that there are no classes. We can’t even start online. It’s just quiet and time is going,” she said. Without university shuttles, she said students were now paying for their own transport when they needed to travel to campus or into town. “We used to use shuttles to go to campus and now we have to Bolt if we want to go to campus or to town to buy things.” She estimated that they could spend about R500 on e-hailing trips. “That money has to come from our parents. “It’s not only affecting us, it’s affecting our parents.” The first-year student said spending more time at their accommodation had also increased everyday expenses. “On a normal day, we just go to campus, attend classes and come back late. Now it’s double the cost of everything.”

“The only thing that’s affecting us is that there are no classes.” - Student UNIVERSITY MOVES TO RESTORE CALM CPUT spokesperson Lauren Kansley said the university had strengthened overnight patrols to protect students who remained behind and those still making arrangements to leave. “We are pleased that day one of the CPUT campus evacuations has been successful. Many students have taken the opportunity to go home,” Kansley said. “For us the measure of success is simple – that we de-escalate violence, avoid a loss of life and bring calm to our campuses. We believe we have achieved that.” The university closed its campuses and residences after violence escalated and a fire broke out at the Old Education Building on the Bellville campus on Monday 17 August. Bellville South police subsequently opened a public violence case. FINANCIAL PLAN WITHDRAWN The unrest followed opposition to CPUT's proposed 2027 financial recovery plan. CPUT Council withdrew the draft plan on 12 August for further consultation and clarification, but protests continued. The university has put its current student debt at about R2,1 billion. The evacuation initially met resistance from students, with some saying they could not afford to travel home at short notice. CPUT maintained that the evacuation was intended to reduce the risk of further violence.

City releases more land for housing T

he City of Cape Town’s land release programme is channeling over 14 000 affordable housing units worth R26 billion in private sector capital into communities that already exist, while opening the door to dignified, well-located homes for more Capetonians. It is as much a housing project as it is a socio-economic investment programme, according to the City. In his address to the Affordable Housing Investment Connect conference in Cape Town last week, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said the City has released more land for affordable housing in the current term than the decade prior under its Priority Programme to accelerate land release. The City is aiming to forge strong publicprivate partnerships for more affordable housing, and thus brought together private sector developers, financiers, government, and international finance bodies for this groundbreaking conference. According to the City, land parcels with

a yield of over 14 000 affordable units are currently in the active land release pipeline or project packaging stage. A further 7 000-unit yield is estimated across land parcels already awarded to developers, while over 6 000 completed social housing units are already in operation in Cape Town. Carl Pophaim, Mayco member for human settlements, said the City had released land valued at R1,7 billion in just the last two years. “We’ve released land with an estimated yield of 13 766 opportunities over the past two years. Over this period, the City also enabled more than R960 million in discounted release, bulk infrastructure investment, and incentives to enhance the viability of projects,” he said. “If this is what we’ve been able to do in just over two years, imagine what we will achieve as our programme matures.” “Our unique land release for affordable housing programme is essentially a neighbourhood socio-economic investment

CALL FOR FUNDING The City is also calling for national grant-funding to be increased dramatically, and for it to be directly allocated to the metro, rather than via the red-tape laden Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA). According to the City, Cape Town’s housing market has seen significant

shifts in recent years, with Covid-19 enabling greater mobility and driving high semigration to the city. Two broad forces are behind the demand, people seeking employment opportunities, drawn by the city’s higher employment rate, and growing confidence in good governance prompting investment. Looking ahead, the pressures are set to intensify. Cape Town’s population is expected to grow to 8,4 million people over 24 years, with 70% of housing demand, both ownership and rental, falling in the affordable bracket. Between now and 2050, more than one million housing units will be required to meet the demand. The market has also seen a noticeable shift from freehold to sectional title developments, which now make up more than 50% of total property sales. According to the City, affordable housing brackets for ownership properties are valued at up to R1,5 million, while the rental space targets households earning between R3 500 and R34 800 per month.

parliamentary summit on gang-related violence in the Western Cape has heard a resounding call for a fundamental shift from arrests to dismantling the entire ecosystem that allows gangsterism to survive. Held at the Good Hope Chamber of Parliament in Cape Town on 19 August, the summit brought together researchers, community leaders, faith organisations, Community Police Forums, civil society and senior police commanders, all confronting the devastating impact of gang violence across the Western Cape. For Denver Dreyer, vice chairperson of the Kraaifontein Spiritual Crime Prevention Forum, the summit was deeply personal. Dreyer, who attended as a community representative, spoke openly about his own 10-year journey through drug addiction. “I know what it means to be caught in the grip of addiction,” he said. “Sitting in the National Assembly and participating in a national conversation about finding solutions to gang violence, I could not help but reflect on how far my own journey has taken me,” he told TygerBurger last week. Dreyer said hearing the human stories behind the statistics affected him most. “There is a mother who has lost

A community that has become accustomed to violence,” he said. “I know that behind addiction is often a person who needs intervention, support, accountability and an opportunity to change. I also know that recovery is possible.” FOLLOW THE MONEY Dr Mark Shaw of the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime warned that gangs have become increasingly sophisticated and financially driven, with drug trafficking and extortion forming significant parts of the criminal economy. He emphasised the need to “follow the money”, target gang leadership and disrupt the financial structures that allow criminal networks to regenerate. Senior station commanders provided direct insight into operational realities. Brig Brian Muller of Mitchells Plain Police Station spoke strongly against police corruption, saying corrupt officers must be identified and dealt with. He also highlighted the challenge of young people repeatedly arrested for drug

offences who then struggle to find employment. Brig Jayseelan Naidoo of Manenberg raised concerns about the link between school absenteeism, youth recruitment and gang economics, and warned of criminal networks gaining access to legitimate economic opportunities, including tenders. Col Wynand Muller of Nyanga stressed that arrests, firearm seizures and convictions, while important, do not by themselves dismantle criminal structures. CHILDREN ON THE FRONTLINE A recurring theme was the vulnerability of children outside the education system. The summit heard calls to keep children in school, address dropout and absenteeism, strengthen child protection, and provide sport, cultural and recreational opportunities. Community representatives warned that previous summits must not become another “talk shop”, calling for measurable action and accountability. The summit heard that success should no longer be measured by arrest numbers alone, but by whether gang finances are disrupted, drug supply chains dismantled, illegal firearms removed, children kept in school and communities made safer. Dreyer said the experience strengthened his commitment to continue sharing his story. “The work does not stop when

Athletes qualify for Cossasa Champs Two talented athletes from the northern suburbs, together with their coach, have been selected to represent South Africa at the upcoming Cossasa Championships in Zimbabwe. Silke Aucamp of Durbanville Primary and Danelle van Tonder of DF Akademie earned their places in the national team after both were crowned South African champions in their respective age groups earlier this year. The Cossasa Championships will take place in Zimbabwe from 31 August to 3 September, bringing together young athletes from across the region to compete at an international level. Silke claimed the u-13 title, while Danelle was crowned South African champion in the u-17 age group. Both athletes specialise in the 800m, one of the most demanding middle-distance events in athletics, combining speed, endurance and tactical racing, says their coach, Dieter Voigt, of Dieter Voigt Coaching Academy. Voigt has also been selected for the South African delegation, where he will serve as the middle distance coach.

ore than 80 years after it was established, Bomb Alley Shellhole in Brackenfell continues to honour those who served their country to ensure the sacrifices of previous generations are not forgotten. Bomb Alley held its 13th consecutive War Commemoration Service at the Bellville War Memorial, in front of the Bellville Civic Centre. The emotive service, initiated by Bomb Alley in 2014 and held in collaboration with the Bellville Subcouncil, has become an important part of the local remembrance calendar where veterans’ organisations, civic representatives, families and the public gather to pay their respects each year. “It commemorates South African participation in the wars and conflicts of the past and remembers those from our communities who made the ultimate sacrifice,” says Gail Jordaan of Bomb Alley. Veterans in MOTH regalia stood to attention, while representatives formed a quiet semicircle at the foot of the Bellville War Memorial where the wreaths of red poppies were laid. The Last Post and Reveille is then sounded by the bugle followed by a period of silence in honour of those who died in service. FOUNDED IN DURBAN Bomb Alley is one of the older branches of the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTH) in the Western Cape, received its charter in Bellville on 3 November 1944 and is approaching its 82nd anniversary. “The MOTH was founded in Durban in 1927 by Charles Evenden, known within the Order as Moth O. From the beginning, the organisation was built around three ideals being True Comradeship, Mutual Help and Sound Memory. These ideals remain at the heart of MOTH activities today,” says Jordaan.

Its members continue to support one another and participate in remembrance parades and commemorative events, while maintaining links with other veterans’ organisations and community groups,” Jordaan concluded.

hen his heart started racing and the weight started falling off, people told him he was "just stressed". Diagnosed with Graves' disease in early 2024, Thembalethu John Kumatana from Kraaifontein has turned two years of living with the autoimmune condition into a guide for others. His book, Living with Graves

AUTHOR TACKLES MYTHS SURROUNDING GRAVES’ DISEASE Disease: A South African Perspective, published this year, grew out of the journaling he started just to make sense of it all. Born in Elliot in the Eastern Cape in 1982, the author wanted to share his journey with others in the hope of strengthening them.

Each book represents a different chapter of his life and a different journey of healing.

"I have come to learn that you do not write for applause. You write because you must, because your story might be the one that helps someone else feel less alone," he tells TygerBurger. Graves' is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, causing it to produce too much thyroid hormone. The result, he says, is that the whole body goes into overdrive, racing heart, unexplained weight loss, insomnia, trembling hands and mood swings. "The hardest part was hearing 'but you look fine'," he says. "Because not every day is the same. Some days I had energy. Other days I could barely get out of bed from fatigue and muscle weakness." Thembalethu says thyroid disease is under-discussed in South Africa, where getting a diagnosis, understanding medication like Carbimazole and Methimazole, managing frequent blood tests and covering the costs is "a journey". He also tackles three myths head-on, that patients caused the disease themselves, that a pill cures it, and that it only affects the thyroid. Graves' can also impact the eyes, skin and heart, and remission can be followed by relapse.

WHY THE BOOK "I'm not a doctor. I'm a Graves warrior," he says. "And our job is to educate and share." He says he wrote the book so the next person diagnosed doesn't feel alone, so families understand what is happening, and to build awareness and survival strategies together. His advice to others is to ask questions at every doctor's visit, find a community, track symptoms and advocate for yourself in the healthcare system. "If you're reading this and you've just been diagnosed, please know: it gets better. It's a journey, a process." Writing a book is an experience that is difficult to put into words, says Thembalethu who has authored several other books on topics such as the importance of fatherhood and a counselling guide. "It begins as a thought, a whisper in your heart that refuses to leave you. A story that needs to be told. There is a deep excitement that comes with it, the moment when the first words finally find their way onto the page. Your heart beats faster. You feel a sense of purpose, a feeling that your voice will finally be heard. Seeing your name on the cover for the first time is an overwhelming moment, a mixture of tears, joy and disbelief. It is the moment you realize, I really did it." he says. "But behind that excitement is

People on the streets are also human On a sunny winter's afternoon in Cape Town, it is easy to become absorbed in the beauty of the city. The blue skies, warm sunlight and busy streets can make it tempting to believe that everything is well. But on the streets, another reality exists: one that many people walk past without a second thought It is the reality of people living there. For many, the sight of someone sleeping under a bridge, sitting on a pavement or pushing their belongings in a trolley has become part of the city's landscape. We see them, but don’t really see them. We make assumptions about how they got there and, sometimes, we judge them. But perhaps the most important lesson is that we should not judge. People living on the streets have hopes, talents, friendships, memories and dreams. Their circumstances are different from ours, but their humanity is not. I recently wrote about Sally Roman, who has lived on the streets of Cape Town for more than 20 years. She arrived in the city as a teenager, hoping to find a better life. Her journey did not unfold as she had hoped. Yet, sitting on the Fan Walk in Green Point, with a pair of scissors in her hand, Sally is not defined by homelessness. She is a self-taught hairdresser. She loves children. She loved singing in her school

choir. She describes herself as someone who gets along with everyone. What is equally striking is the bond she has formed with the people around her. Her friend speaks warmly about her after she cuts his hair. He is happy with the result, but his words reveal that the value of the interaction goes beyond a haircut. He describes Sally as a nice person who is always happy. These friendships remind us that people living on the streets build communities too. They look out for one another. They share stories, laughter and sometimes the little they have. They form genuine connections because, in a difficult environment, having someone who knows you, understands you and accepts you can mean everything. Life on the street is undoubtedly difficult. It can expose people to violence, hunger, illness, loneliness and uncertainty. But it can also create bonds that are difficult for those outside that world to understand. During Women's Month, Sally's message that women should support one another is particularly powerful. She speaks against the tendency to put other women down and calls for more love between women. Perhaps that message extends beyond women. We all need to ask ourselves how we treat people whose lives look different from ours. Compassion does not mean ignoring the challenges associated with homelessness. It means recognising the person behind the circumstances. It means understanding that not everyone chose to live on the street. For many, a series of difficult circumstances, limited opportunities, family breakdown, poverty or other challenges led them there. Sometimes, what a person needs most is not judgement, but a listening ear, a conversation, a meal, a kind word, a moment of dignity. We may not be able to change someone's life, but we can choose how we respond to them. Because the people on our streets are someone's friend, someone's parent, someone's child and above all, they are human beings deserving of love, compassion and dignity. - KAYLYNNE BANTOM

Concern for plight of Rawsonville Thank you for I am writing out of deep concern for the community and local businesses of Rawsonville, a small farming town. Following the severe rain and ﬂooding across the province, the main bridge connecting surrounding farms and communities to the town centre sustained critical damage. It is currently closed to all vehicular traffic and accessible only to pedestrians. As a result, residents and farmers are forced to take a 60 km detour to reach the other side or travel all the way to Worcester to conduct basic business. Local business owners are suffering severely under these circumstances. Several have had to lay off staff, and some have been forced to close down entirely due to the drastic decline in foot traffic and trade. Despite political representatives visiting for multiple meetings, no practical repairs or relief efforts have begun to assist this farming community.

This situation imposes a massive ﬁnancial and logistical strain on everyone, forcing workers and residents to commute signiﬁcantly longer distances for work and daily necessities. It is disheartening to see both national and local governments leave a struggling community to fend for itself. Furthermore, I was informed that a local company offered to create a temporary crossing for cars to relieve the congestion, but was reportedly halted by a nearby mining company along the river (though I cannot independently verify this report). It raises a painful question: why must smaller, vulnerable communities suffer the most and wait the longest for emergency assistance? For anyone travelling in or near the area, please make a conscious effort to support our local businesses. JACQUES, E-mail

Traffic services need more visibility There are comments made by the mayor about being the best municipality in the country — with concern for the well-being, safety and security of the citizens of this city but it appears that the mayor and the senior official responsible for safety and security have a total disregard. Many letters have been written in the local Wednesday newsmedia regarding the disregard for stop signs, yield signs, red traffic lights, but there are no traffic police who spend time in the suburbs patrolling. There has been no evidence by the mayor or the senior official providing instructions to the traffic police, to apply the law, neither any mention of these lawless incidents are stated as key performance indicators. Visibility of traffic police is only evident when a road incident occurs and they arrive in their numbers, but during the normal daily traffic movement "they are out of sight, out of mind". The success of any organisation is determined when the most senior official in the business drives the company through KPI's down to the lowest level to ensure the desired results are achieved. At the City. Fines should be issued to a few citizens for disobeying, disregarding stop signs, yield signs, traffic lights and tailgating, and the message will soon have the desired effect. DISGUSTED, Uitzicht, Durbanville JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security, responds: The City’s traffic service issues thousands of ﬁnes to motorists each month. As indicated previously, these statistics are available and traffic service reports are presented monthly at the subcouncil. Therefore, to claim there is little to no enforcement is disingenuous.

The efforts of the safety and security directorate to address the lawlessness on the roads are well documented. In addition, the City’s traffic service is now finalising the administrative logistics required for enforcement of the amended by-law recently gazetted. The amendments centre on the provisions for impounding vehicles and related penalties. Now that it has been gazetted, traffic officers are able to impound vehicles in a number of instances, including where the vehicle is being driven on a public road in a manner that is reckless and poses an immediate or imminent danger to the life of passengers, road users, or pedestrians. In the last year, between July 2025 and June 2026, the City’s traffic service recorded nearly four million offences. During the period, they made 2 767 arrests — up from 2 255 the year before. Drunk driving arrests increased by 32% from 1 619 in 2024/25 to 2 138. The Traffic Enforcement Unit recorded the following successes. A total of 20 deployments were held in Durbanville (9), Uitzicht (6), and Fisantekraal (5); a total of 1 143 fines were issued in Durbanville (658), Uitzicht (213) and Fisantekraal (272); and a total of 41 taxis impounded in Durbanville (23), Uitzicht (9) and Fisantekraal (9). The traffic enforcement statistics and the hundreds of thousands of complaints every year are key reasons why we introduced this by-law in the first place, and then spent three years working on even tougher amendments, to address the continued lawlessness on our roads, perpetrated by the motoring public and not just taxi drivers. The unsafe outdoors I read with a wry smile the letter about Saturday-night window shopping in Bellville. (TB 19/8) I too remember Voortrekker Road as the heartbeat of our weekends, the strolling, the chatting, the simple pleasure of looking before buying. But I must respectfully push back on one point. Online shopping is not the villain here. It is a tool, and like any tool, it depends on how we use it. Yes, a website cannot replace the warmth of a shopkeeper's greeting or the pleasure of browsing with a friend. But online shopping has also given elderly residents, people with disabilities and working parents access to goods and services they might otherwise never reach. It is not impersonal by nature, it is efficient. The real tragedy is not that we shop online, but that we feel unsafe outdoors. If we want our town centres back, we must ﬁght for them not merely mourn their passing. Bellville is not beyond saving. New developments, improved lighting, visible policing and community-driven initiatives can change the picture. The Brackenfell Business Improvement District has shown what organised community action can achieve. There is no reason Bellville's CBD cannot follow suit. The Valiant is long gone, and no website will bring it back. But neither will nostalgia alone revive a street. If every resident who remembers the good old days committed to visiting a local shop once a week, the difference would be visible within months. I share the longing. Youth Classical Concert celebrates 55th year YOUNG SOLOISTS WILL PERFORM ON STAGE

he annual Youth Classical Concert celebrates its 55th year at Artscape on Saturday 5 September at 19:00. Twelve young classical musicians and singers who auditioned successfully will perform as soloists with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO), conducted by Brandon Phillips. Presented by Artscape and the CPO, supported by the City of Cape Town, the concert gives young musicians the opportunity to perform with a symphony orchestra on a professional stage. Audition candidates had to be bona ﬁde music students, perform at a high standard and reside or study in the Western Cape. The concert is a celebration of young musical talent, not a competition. The programme includes concertos by Ravel, Mozart, Shostakovich, Hofmeyr, Weber, Ibert, Khachaturian and Donizetti, with arias by Saint-Saëns and Handel. SOLOISTS The soloists, aged between 12 and 22, include pianists Giorgia Ehlers (19) from Mowbray, Alexander McIvor (18) from Cape Town and siblings Xizhi Aiden Luo (15) and Weien Amy Luo (18) from Stellenbosch. Other instrumentalists are cellist Solange Rojas (22), raised in Lima, Peru, marimba player Kyrah Adams

(20) from Paarl, clarinettist Benjamin Monvoisin (12) from Loevenstein, euphonium player Kumkani Kabane (20) from Cape Town and saxophonist James Cilliers (20) from Durbanville. Singers are sopranos Phoebe Damons (20) from Bellville and Sinesipho Tokwe (19) from Observatory, and mezzo-soprano Lilitha Nkuku (20) from Goodwood. Each soloist receives mentoring from Phillips, resident conductor of the CPO, head of woodwinds at the South African College of Music at the University of Cape Town and conductor of the UCT ensembles. This year marks the 11th Youth Classical Concert he will conduct. Since the concert's inception, more than 600 young musicians have performed with the CPO. Many are now soloists or members of South African and international symphony orchestras and opera companies. A record 75 applications to audition were received this year. The concert runs for two hours, including a 30-minute interval. Fine Music Radio will broadcast the concert live. International ballet talent comes to CT The 13th South African International Ballet Competition (SAIBC) concluded with a gala at the Artscape Opera House on Thursday 6 August. This year's competition, supported by the City, brought together 118 dancers aged between nine and 22. They competed across the Scholar, Junior and Senior divisions. Dancers took part in Classical Ballet, Contemporary, Choreographic and Ensemble categories. Competitors from South Africa and countries including Cuba, Russia and the United Kingdom (UK) gathered in Cape Town for the semi-finals and finals, highlighting the competition's growing reputation as a leading international ballet platform on the African continent. Founded by Dirk Badenhorst, artistic director of Mzansi Ballet, the SAIBC remained the only international ballet competition of its kind in Africa. It provided young dancers with performance experience, international exposure and opportunities to connect with leading figures in the ballet industry. The competition, a member of the International Federation of Ballet Competitions, was adjudicated by an international jury comprising Joseph Morrissey from the United States of America, Sergey Usanov from Russia, Callum Hastie from Australia, Kate Coyne from the UK, Lorelei Bari from Romania/ Germany, Ariel Mejic from Cuba and South Africa's Thoriso Magongwa, who

was based in Chechnya. The closing gala featured performances by competition winners and guest artists. Prima ballerina Angela Revie of Mzansi Ballet performed the Walpurgisnacht Pas de Deux with fellow Mzansi Ballet dancer and Cuban juror Ariel Méjica. Celebrating 88 years

HERMAN JANSEN massive 5 000 hours for the love of the game, totalling about 210 days. This is how long the logbook of Walter Oosthuizen, the legendary Durbanville Bowling Club (DBC) stalwart, shows he has spent around bowling greens in his 45 years as a bowling umpire.

FORMIDABLE OPPONENT The affable Oosthuizen from Table View turned 88 yesterday (Tuesday 25 August)) and is still a formidable opponent on the greens as well. Oosthuizen, a member at DBC for 33 years, qualified as a South African Bowling Association Technical Official in 1981. He has served in this capacity for an uninterrupted 45 years. SPORTS LEGEND AWARD In 2016 already the Western Cape ministry of cultural affairs and sport honoured Oosthuizen with a Sports Legend Award "in recognition of the unselfish contribution that you have made to sport in the Western Cape". He and his wife, Pat (86), this year celebrated 65 years of married life. They got married in Worcester on 11 March 1961. The couple have lived in Table View for many years. Oosthuizen studied mechanical engineering and spent decades in Worcester at Eskom. His sporting career began as a table tennis player where he was dubbed as "King of Boland" in this sporting code. He first got Boland colours in 1959 and eventually was capped more than fifty times. He won more than sixty Boland titles. The couple moved to Cape Town in 1988 After 30 years of playing bowls, Oosthuizen won the Western Province senior single title in the 2020-'21 season. In the first round he achieved the

She also made the Guinness Book of Records almost 30 years ago. Her Durbanville Fours team set up a world record by beating George Lee Park 64-0 in the SA Nationals in Cape Town on 10 March 1997. Purple speedos rally men for cancer awareness It’s the one day of the year when thousands of South African men proudly swap formal workwear for purple Speedos, all in the name of saving lives. The 2026 Hollard Daredevil Run is taking place on Friday 23 October and entries are now open. Over the past 17 years, this iconic men’s health movement has raised millions for the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of South Africa. Funds are used to help expand education and raise awareness about prostate and testicular cancer across the country. This campaign continues to deliver tangible results for men’s health across South Africa. Since partnering with the Hollard Daredevil Run, CANSA has reached over 59 000 men through awareness initiatives, conducts an average of over 2 000 screenings annually, and has referred hundreds of abnormalities for further medical care. Last year alone, CANSA completed 610 PSA screenings during the 2025 Daredevil Run campaign. Long-standing campaign partner, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of South Africa, has also transformed funds raised through the Hollard Daredevil Run into meaningful action. With this support, the Foundation has hosted 143 education and awareness events, supported hundreds of men and their families through its national helpline, expanded access to prostate cancer educational resources in multiple South African languages, and this year will launch South Africa’s first National Prostate Cancer Registry. ‘LEKKER BALLS, LEKKER LIFE!’ This year’s tagline, “Lekker balls, Lekker life!”, celebrates the idea that taking care of your health today means being more aware, prioritizing regular screenings and getting checked early. “Wearing a purple Speedo isn’t just about having fun. It’s about making a statement. Every participant who takes part in the Daredevil Run helps break down stigma, encouraging more men to prioritize their health and understand which health checks could one day save their lives,” says Adel Kriel, head of experiential marketing at Hollard. Prostate cancer is one of the leading

causes of cancer-related deaths in South African men. One in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, with Black African men facing a 60 per cent higher risk than other population groups. A simple PSA blood test could help detect prostate cancer early, when treatment is most effective. The Prostate Cancer Foundation of South Africa recommends that Black African men and men with a first-degree family history of prostate and/or breast cancer have an annual PSA test from the age of 40. For all other men, annual PSA screening is recommended from the age of 45. While less widespread, testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men aged 15–49, affecting approximately one in every 250 males. When caught early, it is also highly treatable. EARLY DETECTION CAN SAVE LIVES According to CANSA, men aged 15–49 should perform a monthly testicular selfexamination and consult a healthcare professional immediately if they notice any lump, swelling, or unusual change. The very message at the heart of the Hollard Daredevil Run for both prostate and testicular cancers is that early detection can save lives. A simple check today could make all the difference tomorrow. The official Hollard Daredevil Run takes place on Friday, 23 October at 15:00, with the official event taking place at at Zoo Lake in Johannesburg.
